Solvent recovey
systems
Formeco units allow
the recycling and the re-use
of degreasing and washing
solvents
Through a simple distillation process,
they separate the contaminants (resins,
polymers, pigments, paints, oils, etc.)
from the original solvent. The boiling of the solvent
is accomplished by a peripheral heating
jacket filled with diathermic oil, heated by an
electrical element. The vapours are then convoyed
to a condenser cooled by air or water.
The condensed solvent is collected in a tank,
for its reuse.
In the units of the Distatic series the contaminants
remain as a residue inside a disposable
bag named “Rec-Bag” or by tilting the unit itself..
The distilled solvent characteristics are
not altered by the distillation process, which
can be carried on repeatedly. In the units of
the Dynamic series a rotating scraper having
adjustable metallic blades keeps the content
to be treated constantly in movement allowing
maximum extraction of the residues to stick
to the boiler’s wall and bottom. An automatic
drying cycle will allow the residues to be extracted
in solid or powder state. The distillation
process is fully automatic; the user’s work
is simply limited to load the solvent, set the
distillation time and temperature and, finally,
unload the residue at the end of the cycle.
All Formeco units can be connected to a vacuum
unit, suitable for high boiling solvents or
for those flammable ones which have a close
boiling point and flash point. The vacuum
module can be equipped with an air operated
vacuum pump or an electrical vacuum according
to the need.
The Formeco distillers are used in the printing
facilities (for different applications) and in flexography
as well, where they normally use a
blend of perchlor and buthanol; these are
products which need the vacuum distillation
because thermolables.
Very common is also their use in the flexible
packaging production, where they mostly use
ethyl-acetate for washing the printing equipment.
Distillatori per solventi
Gli impianti Formeco
permettono il recupero
e riutilizzo del solvente
inquinato da operazioni
di lavaggio e sgrassaggio
Sfruttando il principio della distillazione
semplice, separano i contaminanti (inchiostri,
resine, polimeri, pigmenti,
vernici, oli, ecc.) dal solvente originale. L'ebollizione
del solvente inquinato avviene all'interno
di un bollitore, solidale con un'intercapedine
contenete olio diatermico, riscaldato
da una o più resistenze. I vapori prodotti
Customized solutions
for high quality
printing jobs
The “Bonding Engineers” from
Lohmann at Ipackima 2012
Lohmann Italy takes part in the IPACK
IMA 2012 in Milan for the third time.
The "Bonding Engineers" display their
adhesive solutions for packaging printing and
its latest flexoprinting products. The
Lohmann “Bonding Engineers” can accommodate
nearly any type of printing.
In today´s printing industry the name
Lohmann is inseparably connected with the
DuploFlex, brand, which has evolved as the
benchmark in compressible plate mounting.
With a know-how of more than 50 years, the
company developed products for the printing
industry which achieve more than just
fastening printing plates on cylinders or
sleeves. They are optimizing the printing
process and make a significant contribution
to the printing result. With its portfolio of plate
mounting tapes Lohmann supplies not only
the needs of the flexographic industry but also
offers a quite unique construction of this
products. Conventional compressible plate
mounting tapes consist of a reinforced film
on one side. In comparison to this the DuploFlex,
range is equipped with a doublesided
flexible PE reinforcement. Therefore
the forces acting upon the compressible
foam are perfectly cushioned and uncontrolled
dot gain is avoided.
The possibilities in flexoprint are always increasing
and customer demands for a perfect
print result are growing accordingly.
Lohmann keeps up with this development,
optimized its DuploFlex, range and created
even new products. The basic DuploFlex,
range consists now of several adhesive
tapes, differing in the hardness of the foam
and in the adhesion forces. The special DuploFlex,
HP 5 (High Performance) range is
the suitable choice for the most challenging
demands. Because its high quality polymer
foam distinguishes itself by incomparably
high stability and a superior resilience. Furthermore,
it counteracts machine vibrations
and is suitable for long and demanding print
jobs. For the label industry Lohmann created
the DuploFlex, 3 and 4 range. This range
offers a wide selection of adhesive and foam
properties as well as two variations of thickness.
Furthermore, Lohmann developed the
product range for the high quality post print,
called DuploFlex, CB (corrugated board). DuploFlex,
CB is available as a solution-oriented
kit in two versions, whereas the use depends
on the individual needs of the customers.
One version is a single sided adhesive
foam tape and the other is a none adhesive
product with a foam on one side and
a Pet-liner on the other side (here the further
step of the lamination process is saved). For
both versions the foam can be offered in various
hardness and thickness. DuploFlex, CB
consists of a closed cell foam with optimal
resilience and shows resistance against water
and solvents.
di Lohmann tra gli espositori
di Ipackima 2012
Sarà la terza partecipazione di Lohmann
a questa manifestazione, i
"Bonding Engineers" mostreranno le
soluzioni adesive per la stampa del packaging.
Nell’odierno mercato della stampa il
nome Lohmann e’ legato indissolubilmente
pressioni eccessive evitando
schiacciamenti del punto. Conoscendo le
10
crescenti necessità e complessità dei lavori
di stampa dell’odierna flessografia, Lohmann
ha ottimizzato la gamma DuploFlex
sviluppando ed aggiungendo nuovi prodotti.
La gamma DuploFlex 5 consiste oggi di
diversi prodotti che differiscono per durezza
delle schiume e gradi di adesività. Altro prodotto
speciale è il DuploFlex HP 5 (High
Performance).
dall’altro. Per entrambe le versioni la
schiuma può essere fornita in varie durezze
e spessori.
SinoCorrugated South
2012 Set for Houjie,
Dongguan
The show is the world’s
leading exhibition
for corrugated box
equipment, consumables
and technologies
Right now, the global economy is recovering
steadily.The preliminary
findings of the OECD’s 2011 Economic
Outlook report show that six major
developed economies, excluding Japan, realized
stronger-than-expected economic
growth, an estimated yearly increase of 3%,
in the first half of the year. Japan’s performance
is explained by the tsunami, earthquake
and subsequent nuclear reactor meltdown.As
the recovery of the global economy
continues, so demand for corrugated
packaging grows.
The corrugated industry has entered a new
stage of development – one filled with numerous
opportunities and potential. According
to statistics from the World Packaging
Organization, the total output value of the
world's packaging industry was USD 563.8
billion in 2009, of which USD 216 billion, or
38%, came from the paper packaging market.
According to the China Paper Association’s
2009 China Paper Industry Report, output
and consumption of paper and paperboard
in China rose by 183.3% and 139.7% respectively
between 2000 and 2009. The average
annual growth rate of China’s corrugated
industry has hovered between 18%
and 20% in recent years. In light of these
figures, predictions are that by 2013, China
will have replaced the US as the world's
largest corrugated box market.
SinoCorrugated South 2012, organized by
Reed Exhibitions, will reflect this shift, and
serve as a convenient, highly efficient, channel
for communication among exhibitors, visitors
and buyers. The event relies on its
unique and innovative perspective, its valueadded
services and its thorough representation
of new industry information.
SinoCorrugated South 2012 will take place
from April 11 to April 13 at Guangdong Modern
International Exhibition Center in Houjie,
Dongguan. The show is the world’s leading
exhibition for corrugated box equipment,
consumables and technologies. It brings together
well-known suppliers to assess the
top carton and paperboard manufacturing
solutions. Reed Exhibitions is devoted to
helping exhibitors showcase their products,
technologies and company profiles. Reed
also wants to provide an excellent platform
via which to negotiate and interact with buyers
from around the world.
The exhibition will span an area of
45,000sqm and attract over 600 exhibitors.
An additional 1,200 corrugated manufacturing
machines and 1,000 related consumables
will be featured. Outside of the displays
will be a further 10+ technical presentations
and industry exchange meetings. Altogether,
21,500 local and international visitors
and over 30 industry associations are
expected on-site.
SinoCorrugated South 2012 will attract globally
renowned suppliers of corrugated cardboard
processing machinery, carton processing
equipment, consumables and spare
parts. The event will display the world's
most advanced carton and cardboard manufacturing
devices, as well as related, cutting
edge consumables. Well-known companies
like Bhs, Fosber, Dongfang Precision,
Ming Wei, Justu, Kaituo-NC, Sinovan, Keshenglong,
K & H, Marquip, Eternal, Tsai Yi
Group, Tan Chen, etc. will display their
newest manufacturing and processing solutions
on-site. Reed expects most exhibitors
to feature a large range of machines live.
Several pieces of equipment that are rarely
seen outside of the companies’ plants will
be prominently displayed in exhibition
booths. On-site demonstrations will give visitors
a real sense of the production plant, and
allow them to see how effective and high in
quality the equipment is.
Reed Exhibitions is striving to drive forward
the corrugated industry, in light of current
global economic integration. This is why the
rapid development of SinoCorrugate has
garnered worldwide attention. The following
industry associations are set to send strong
delegations to visit SinoCorrugated South
2012 avrà luogo
a Houjie, Dongguan
La fiera è la mostra
più importante al mondo
per le attrezzature,
consumabili e tecnologie
per le scatole di cartone
Attualmente l’economia globale si sta
riprendendo stabilmente.
ondulato.
dell’industria.
SinoCorrugated South 2012 si svolgerà
dall’11 al 13 aprile a Guangdong Modern International
Exhibition Center a Houjie, Dongguan.
Reed Exhibitions
si dedica completamente ad aiutare gli
espositori a presentare i loro prodotti, tecnologie
e profili aziendali. Reed vuole anche
fornire una piattaforma eccellente attraverso
la quale negoziare ed interagire con i
buyer da tutto il mondo.
L’esposizione coprirà un’area di 45.000 mq
e attirerà oltre 600 espositori. Saranno presentate
circa 1.200 macchine per la produzione
del cartone ondulato e 1.000 relativi
consumabili. Oltre alla mostra ci saranno più
di 10 presentazioni tecniche e incontri di
scambio professionale. Sono previsti 21.500
visitatori locali e internazionali e sono attese
oltre 30 associazioni industriali.
SinoCorrugated South 2012 attrarrà i fornitori
rinomati in tutto il mondo di macchine
per la produzione del cartone ondulato, di
attrezzature per la produzione di scatole di
cartone , di consumabili e di ricambi. L’evento
i relativi consumabili all’avanguardia. Aziende
famose, come Bhs, Fosber, Dongfang
Pecision, Ming Wei, Justu, Kaitou-NC, Sinovan,
Keshenglong, K & H, Marquip, Eternal,
Tsai Yi Group, Tan Chen, etc. mostreranno
1st prize
MaxColor, the latest
development in the MaxPro
suite of Prepress applications
has won the Prepress
innovation category for the
Flexotech International
awards 2011
The ceremony, which was held at the
London Hilton Metropole on the 19th
October is one of the most prestigious
international events and is sponsored by
leading companies in the industry.
Speaking after the presentation, Steve
Donegan of Graphic Republik said ìWe are
delighted to receive such an accolade from
such a respected source. As a young company,
being shortlisted in a category with established
industry players, yet winning the
prize for Prepress innovation, is a proud and
significant momenti.
MaxColor, which was competing in a group
with products from Idealliance and EskoArtwork,
is an option within the MaxPro suite of
applications that has been developed to help
reduce the amount of inks/print stations used
on press by changing/replacing existing
colours. The overall benefits include increased
image colour vibrancy, lower ink usage
and better registration (due to reduced
print stations).
ìMaxColor is just one of the true, innovative
products within the MaxPro range. It is significant
not only because of itís ease of use
and cost saving featuresî said Steve Donegan,
ìbut as the judges highlighted, from the
impact the savings can have from an environmental
point of view. It has wide market
appeal, with users such as brand owners
and prepress trade shops through to flexo
and digital printers.
MaxColor offers the following features:
1) Internal colour conversion via MaxColor
Profile - Unlike ICC profiles, MaxColor profiles
are generated from industry standard
colour libraries (e.g. Pantone) or custom spot
colours, using the LAB values as reference.
The resultant MaxColor profile is used to convert
a) RGB/CMYK Tiff images or b) MaxPro
files which can include text as well as images.
In the case of MaxPro files, the user
has the choice of whether to convert image
only, text only or both.
2) Post conversion editing - Once the file has
been converted, MaxColor provides tools for
image enhancement via individual separation
curves and individual or colour combination
selective editing.
A colour meter tool allows the user to monitor
changes made and a comparison image
feature provides a before/after view.
3) Monitor Calibration, display profile and display
dot gain curve - MaxColor provides an
integral monitor calibration process which
has been designed to more accurately reproduce
both CMYK and Spot colour rendition
when compared to standard ICC profiles.
It enables different press/material/ink
characteristics to be shown on-screen in the
form of a Dot Gain Curve library which can
be changed on-the-fly, without the need to
re-calibrate.
This feature also accepts Star Proof calibration
chart readings allowing users to import
Star Proof calibration curves with ink hue and
dot gain information.
4) Colour Library - MaxPro/MaxColor allows
users to import multiple colour libraries for
use in colour conversion and on-screen
viewing. Custom Spot colours such as those
created from ink draw-downs on different
materials can also be imported to assist in
accurate on-screen colour rendition.
A Silver Metallic Pro option was also shortlisted
in the Prepress innovation category.
Silver Metallic Pro is an option to MaxPro,
developed to automatically produce special
White Ink separations for printing on Metallic
foil or board.
Once images are converted, an on-screen
Metallic View feature enables the user to
check the result while djusting the light reflection
intensity and angle to simulate the
print ink and material combinations.
Star Proof produces high quality halftone
proofs on inkjet devices.
Itís Actual Dot system replicates original
screening and dot patterns at proofing resolutions.
This system enables Star Proof to deliver
contract quality proofs with a hard dot, sharp
images, accurate colour and fine detail - just
as they will appear on the press. It has several
features developed specifically to meet
the requirements of the Packaging industry,
together with an automatic spot colour calibration
system, capable of matching over
97% of the Pantone library at a Delta e of 3.
The MaxPro suite of applications is a powerful
software solution designed for Prepress
professionals.
MaxPro allows users to create automatic,
semi automatic or manual traps to linework,
contone and transparency areas.
It has a bespoke monitor calibration system
which faithfully reproduces spot colour rendition
on-screen and allows for different dot
gain curves to be applied on-the-fly.
With Max Step, users have the ability to interactively
create bespoke step and repeat
layouts, or use pre-defined die cut guides to
automatically generate layouts according to
the requirements of the printer or converter.
It fully supports industry standard formats
such as CFF2 and has the ability to produce
final layouts for plate, cylinder or sleeve.
MaxColor has been developed to automatically
reduce separations and/or convert
CMYK Separations to spot colours.
The resultant print uses less ink, with more
vibrant colours and a better quality registration
whether printing Gravure,
Flexo or Uv Offset. When used with Digital
presses, MaxColor takes advantage of any
additional colors available (such as Orange,
Green or Blue) to create a unique and vibrant
print.
Silver Metallic Pro has been developed to automatically
produce special White Ink separations
for printing on Metallic foil or board.
complessivi includono immagini con
colori più vibranti, minore utilizzo di inchiostro
e migliore registro grazie al ridotto numero
di gruppi stampa.
MaxColor è solo uno dei prodotti veramente
innovativi della gamma MaxPro. » significativo
flexo o digitali.
MaxColor offre le seguenti caratteristiche:
1) Conversione colore interna tramite Profilo
MaxColor ñ Diversamente dai profili ICC,
i Profili MaxColor sono generati da librerie
standard industriali (es. Pantone) o da colori
riferimento. Il profilo cosÏ ottenuto viene
usato per convertire a) immagini Tiff
La soluzione per
la conversione
Multi-Colore vince il 1°
premio
RGB/Cmyk oppure b) files MaxPro che contengono
testi e tratti oltre alle immagini. Nel
caso di conversione di files MaxPro, líutente
può scegliere se convertire solo le immagini,
i tratti e testi o entrambi.
Uno
strumento di controllo colore consente allíutente
The impact of the
great recession
on print
The long road to recovery:
how the economic crisis will
shape the future and impact
drupa 2012
When French bank BNP Paribas announced
the closure of two of its
off balance sheet investment vehicles
on August 9 2007, few outside the world
of high finance took notice. However, that
event marked the first lashings of rain on Europe
of a storm that over the next three years
would devastate the European economy and
result in the loss of tens of thousands of printing
jobs across the continent.
The technical definition of a recession is two
quarters of consecutive contraction of GDP
(Gross Domestic Products). In reality a recession
is defined by one thing: fear. Just
over 12 months after BNP’s closure of its investment
vehicles, the Federal Reserve and
the US government took the indefensible decision
to let Lehman Brothers, an investment
bank that had hundreds of billions of dollars
of subprime exposure on its books, fail.
Fear paralysed the global economic system.
Money markets, on which many European
banks relied for funding, ceased up as banks
lost trust in their peers to repay the funds;
banks collapsed amid the dearth of funding
and European taxpayers were forced to intervene
to save the global economic system
from collapse. A recession like no other in
living memory ensued and in its wake thousands
of print companies were forced to
close their doors.
The perfect storm
Of all sectors, print is perhaps hit the hardest
by recessions. On one front, it is reliant
on consumer confidence, GDP growth and
the subsequent advertising investments
made by large companies. On the other it is
a manufacturing industry, reliant on bank
lending to invest in equipment. For printers,
the financial crisis was a perfect storm.
Andrew Brown, public affairs director at the
BPIF (British Printing Industries Federation),
says: “The recession was a period of exceptional
challenge for print companies, as
the deepest and longest recession since the
Second World War took its toll. The UK
economy shrank by more than 6per cent
during the recession, and by the end it was
some 10 per cent smaller than it would have
been had growth continued on its previous
trend. “The rate of consolidation and structural
change in our industry has reached a
level unprecedented in living memory. Many
companies went to the wall as the fall in demand
for print impacted on our overcapacity
sector. “
Brown adds that the contraction of bank
lending was a particularly pertinent issue for
print businesses. “Companies found that in
order to attract external capital for investment,
they had to place renewed emphasis
on defining specific objectives for any capital
spend, linked to tangible and measurable
outcomes,” he says.
“Others had to pare down their investment
plans, or to look to finance it from revenues.
To some degree this is a healthy discipline,
in many instances prompting more careful
investment planning and/or a re-examination
of how well existing assets are being
utilised.”
Exacerbating changes
The impact of the Great Recession was exacerbated
by the fact that the print industry
was already suffering when the downturn hit.
Many companies in the sector had reacted
slowly to the advent of the internet and were
operating business models better suited to
the heyday of print with high overheads and
often inefficient machinery and internal
processes.
Nick Dixon, a print entrepreneur who built up
the Lateral Group over the last eight years
before selling it to IOS in August, says that
the transformation of the print industry was
underway long before the recession hit.
“We saw in the early 2000s that the market
was moving towards multimedia communications
and bought Howitt out of administration
in 2004 as the first building block of
the Lateral Group in order to capitalise on
that opportunity. We felt we needed to be at
the forefront of the move towards integrated
multi-channel communications,” he says.
Another trend that was already in full swing
before the recession was the consolidation
of the industry as traditional printing firms
merged to realise the economies of scale required
by shrinking margins. However, many
were thwarted in their attempts to achieve
that. Not least was John Caris, the former
chief executive of European printing giant
Roto Smeets, who became the champion of
the need for industry consolidation.
Attempts by Caris to consolidate the European
gravure and web offset industry were
thwarted firstly by shareholders in the attempt
to acquire Quebecor World and then
20
by the credit crunch when a deal for private
equity house Hombergh/De Pundert (HH-
BV) Group to buy the printing company collapsed
due to the investor’s inability to raise
the necessary funds.
Caris, however, was under no illusion as to
where the blame for the decline of the print
industry lay:
"The printing industry is not profitable and
companies have created their own problem.
It's the fault of printers themselves," he told
an industry conference in 2009.
However, not all areas of the print industry
have been hit as hard by the recession. Jef
Stoffels, director of corporate marketing at
EskoArtwork says: “We are mainly active in
the packaging printing
world with links to the high end commercial
printing and publishing industry.
“We have to say that this segment in the industry
does not seem to be much affected
by the financial crisis and the impact is not
that visible. Trends of consolidation, globalisation
and shifting work from one place to
the other in the world continue to go on.”
Finding efficiencies
Despite the odd patch of immunity in the industry
it is clear that almost all businesses
have had to adapt to survive the hard economic
times. Business models have evolved
to meet the new market reality and printing
companies have cut overheads and staffing
levels in order to retain sustainability.
Business processes have also had to develop
to realise increased efficiencies. “Customers
are seeking improvements to their
business operations and processes to improve
their efficiency, time to market, consistent
quality and reduce errors,” says Stoffels.
“People within the packaging and printing
supply chain have become more aware of
their role and possibilities in the industry. We
see traditional segments becoming blurry
and players in the industry
are seeking ways to broaden their services
with added value activities. This way we see
commercial printers moving into packaging
printing or packaging producers making inroads
in the sign and display business”
Manufacturers were hit hard by the decline
in investment and continue to monitor the
current market movements. When announcing
its first quarter results for
2011/2012 Heidelberg Group CEO Bernhard
Schreier said: “We are keeping a close
eye on current economic developments
across the globe, but it is difficult to predict
what will happen. However, given the continuing
high demand and strong economic
growth on the Chinese market, we are assuming
that the regional effects on business
development at Heidelberg will be only temporary.”
And it will continue to put measures
in place to protect recovery. Heidelberg CFO
Dirk Kaliebe stated: “We will forge ahead with
our successful strategy, particularly through
consistent cost and asset management.”
Even print companies that could attract bank
funding were unwilling to invest large
amounts in new kit due to the uncertain economic
outlook while all printers looked at
ways to cut costs.
“Clients who geared up for survival did what
we expected them to do, and started to implement
cost reduction measures and every
expenditure, however small it may be, was
analysed before approval,” says Fabian Prudhomme,
vice president of Enfocus.
“In general, I think it’s safe to say that during
the recession we just had (and are still living
today by the way), clients are very cost conscious.
When they invest or make a budgetary
expense decision, it almost exclusively
relates to necessary costs. The ‘nice to have’
products and solutions are definitely gone
from the horizon.”
Manufacturers too have had to adapt to the
economic reality by cutting overheads and
shelving new product development to reduce
costs.
Prudhomme says: “When the crisis hit late
2008, early 2009, we acted quickly and
based on an internal analysis, we were forced
to go through a reorganisation just like many
other companies. It forced us to refocus on
our core services and eliminate non-revenue
driving initiatives as much as possible.
A new approach
Manufacturers have also adopted a new approach
to help their clients through the recession.
Previously a company would simply
sell a piece of kit and offer a service or
warranty contract. Nowadays manufacturers
are becoming consultants to their clients
offering business training and support in implementing
new business models that can
be enabled by their investments.
Mark Lawn, European marketing manager,
Professional Print, Canon Europe, says that
suppliers must also be partners and consultants
to their clients to help secure the future
of their businesses.
That is a trend that a number of manufacturers
including Presstek, Ricoh, Kodak and
Fuji have identified and they now offer business
advice services to their clients.
Trade Associations, too, have had to work
harder to meet the demands of their members
and navigate them through the stormy
waters. The BPIF’s Andrew Brown says:
“While the BPIF’s regular activities in support
of members’ businesses continued unabated
throughout the recession, this period was
a real test of the capabilities and resourcefulness
of the BPIF team, and one that they
met in spades.
“In a recession the focus is inevitably on cost
reduction and enhancing existing operating
capability, and the bulk of the thousands of
phone calls received and visits made by staff
over this period reflected this.”
In Germany the trade association has been
adapting to the new world order. In the most
recent annual report from BVDM (Bundesverband
Druck & Medien EV) Rolf
Schwarz and Thomas Mayer talked of the
“shift to sustainability” in the print industry.
“The crisis intensified and accelerated structural
change in the print industry. The
turnover, the number of enterprises and employees
in the industry declined. New concepts
are required to identify the companies
in the highly competitive environment,” they
said.
The BVDM has been pushing these new
concepts holding technical forums of topics
such as media publishing and web-to-print
as well as creating functioning networks of
printers and lobbying against legislation such
as bans on certain forms of advertising.
Survival of the most innovative
Recessions are a tough but essential part of
the economic cycle. During good economic
times, companies become inefficient, markets
are distorted by an unsustainable influx
of funds and new company launches create
overcapacity that only becomes apparent
when the tide of prosperity ebbs.
Companies that innovate to survive emerge
from recessions much stronger and more efficient
than when the downturn hit. Print
companies coming out of this are no exception.
“The print industry has had to re-invent itself
in a very short timeframe,” says Prudhomme,
“The print industry has probably seen more
changes in the past five to 10 years than in
the past 80 and I believe this spiral will only
keep accelerating.
“Printing companies can no longer solely rely
on paper, but must look for creative ways
to combine paper (which I don’t believe will
disappear any time soon) with cross-media
F&C
delivery mechanisms. I believe that we have
only started to scratch the surface of what
is possible using today’s technology.”
Indeed, the move to cross media communications
has been a key opportunity that successful
companies have harnessed. Nick
Dixon says: “When companies stick to producing
one product competing on price you
get a downward spiral and that is what we
saw before and during the recession.
“During the recession, clients had their advertising
budgets cut and they were even
more driven by finding efficiencies while
maintaining effectiveness. We saw the pendulum
swing in favour of e-mail and SMS
communications due to the need to cut
costs. That was a fundamental shift and had
a dramatic knock on effect on communications.”
Brown says that the BPIF has been helping
its members adapt to the ‘fundamental structural
changes sweeping across our industry’.
“More and more print suppliers are taking
advantage of the digital revolution to add to
their portfolio of client services in areas such
as managing mailing lists and customer data,
handling stock and fulfilment, designing
and managing customers’ websites, and
running campaigns that integrate all media,
new and old,” he says.
“The traditional print business model, pricedriven
and product-focused, is no longer fit
for purpose. With the industry’s customers
now looking for cost-effective campaigns
rather than just cut-price commodity print,
printers can no longer rely solely on manufactured
products and low prices to differentiate
themselves: print must adapt if it is
to survive.”
Continued consolidation
Indeed, the commoditisation of print that was
already in effect before the recession, gathered
pace during the downturn as companies
cut costs in an attempt to replace lost
business. What ensued was a ’race to the
bottom‘ in terms of pricing with some companies
offering work at cost simply to maintain
cashflow during the depths of the recession.
It only takes a handful of companies
to embark on a suicidal pricing policy to
affect the whole sector and that is what we
saw in the recession, the impact of which is
still being felt by many.
Print companies without specific niches or
value added services that were competing
on price floundered as prices fell below
costs.
Consolidation, however, has enabled some
progress. The UK web offset sector was
among the biggest casualties of the recession
in the print industry. Long plagued by
overcapacity the recession has seen the collapse
of a number of the largest companies
and the closure of numerous sites.
The sector has consolidation with Walstead
Investments leading the charge by acquiring
Wyndeham, Southernprint and St Ives’ web
division among other companies. The impact
of the recession on the UK magazine
printing sector may therefore ultimately be
positive although it took a lot of pain to get
there.
Although it may not yet feel like it, the worst
of the last recession is probably beyond us.
However, we have passed through one
storm only to face another. The spectre of
the European sovereign debt crisis is weighing
heavily on markets and consumer confidence
continues to bump along the depths
experienced during the Great Recession.
We are not out of the woods yet and it may
well be that things will get worse before they
recover. For the print industry this means that
the consolidation will continue and the need
to focus on value adding services, with print
just one part of a company’s offering will not
go away. But the companies that have
emerged in business from the last recession
have done so stronger and wiser and are
competing in a smaller industry. As and when
the economy recovers, these businesses will
be well placed to reap the rewards of their
determination.
continente. La definizione prettamente tecnica
del termine recessione indica una contrazione
del Prodotto Interno Lordo (Pil) per
due trimestri consecutivi. In realtà, la recessione
è definita attraverso una sola cosa:
paura. Poco più di 12 mesi dopo l’annuncio
di BNP di chiudere i suoi veicoli di
investimento, la Federal Reserve e il Governo
statunitense presero l’inammissibile
bancarotta. Ne derivò una recessione di
una portata senza precedenti e su questa
scia migliaia di aziende grafiche furono obbligate
a chiudere i battenti.
Event
di grandi aziende effettuati nella pubblicità;
dall’altro, è un’industria di lavorazione
che si finanzia tramite i prestiti bancari
in modo tale da poter investire nei
macchinari e negli impianti.
tempesta.
Andrew Brown, direttore degli Affari Pubblici
presso la Federazione Industriale della
Stampa Britannica (BPIF), commenta:
d’uomo. Molte aziende andarono in rovina
proprio quando la domanda registrava un
calo colpendo un settore, il nostro, che
aveva una capacità produttiva in eccesso”.
Andrew Brown aggiunge che l’esitante erogazione
del credito alle aziende grafiche da
parte delle banche ha costituito un serio
problema.
esistenti”.
Circostanze aggravanti
Gli effetti della grande recessione sono
peggiorati a causa delle circostanze in cui
versava e stava già soffrendo l’industria
della stampa quando subì la flessione. Molte
aziende del settore hanno reagito lentamente
all’avventod i internet operando ancora
utilizzava spesso macchine e processi interni
inefficienti.
Nick Dixon, un imprenditore di stampa, che
negli ultimi otto anni ha sviluppato Lateral
Group prima di venderla a IOS in agosto,
sostiene che la trasformazione dell’industria
della stampa era già in atto molto prima
della recessione.
“Agli inizi degli anni 2000 notammo che il
mercato si muoveva verso la comunicazione
multimediale, poi, nel 2004 comprammo
Howitt come primo elemento della Lateral
Group rilevandola dal fallimento per
sfruttare questa opportunità. Sentivamo
Tuttavia, molte
aziende furono ostacolate nel tentativo
di raggiungere questo obiettivo. Tra queste
figura anche John Caris, ex direttore generale
del gigante europeo di stampa Roto
Smeets, il quale diventò il fautore del
consolidamento necessario all’industria. I
tentativi avviati da John Caris di consolidare
il settore europeo della stampa in rotocalco
e la stampa offset bobina, furono
dapprima vanificati dagli azionisti nel momento
in cui Caris voleva rilevare la Quebecor
World e successivamente contrastati
Pundert (HHBV) Group in merito
all’acquisizione dell'azienda di stampa a
causa dell’incapacità dell’investitore di reperire
i fondi necessari.
così duramente tutti i settori dell’industria
della stampa. Jef Stoffels, direttore del corporate
marketing presso la EskoArtwork
sostiene: “Siamo perlopiù operativi nel
mondo della stampa su packaging e intessiamo
rapporti con la pregevole stampa
tradizionale e il settore dell’editoria. Dobbiamo
dire che questo settore sembra non
sia stato fortemente colpito dalla crisi finanziaria
e le conseguenze non sono così
visibili. Tuttavia, le tendenze di consolidamento,
di globalizzazione e di delocalizzazione
del lavoro verso altri siti di produzione
nel mondo continuano ad esistere”.
Trovare efficienze
Nonostante questo segmento di mercato
sia apparentemente immune, è chiaro che
tutte le aziende si dovrebbero adattare per
superare i periodi economici difficili.
“I clienti
valore aggiunto. In questo modo, osserviamo
gli stampatori commerciali spingersi
nella stampa per il packaging e produttori
di packaging intaccare il settore della
segnaletica e cartellonistica (sign e display)”.
I produttori sono stati colpiti duramente dal
calo degli investimenti e continuano a monitorare
attentamente gli attuali sviluppi del
mercato. Quando furono annunciati i primi
risultati trimestrali per l’anno 2011/2012,
Bernhard Schreier, direttore generale della
Heidelberg Group, disse: “Teniamo un occhio
vigile sugli sviluppi attuali dell’economia
in tutto il mondo, però è difficile immaginare
quello che succederà. Alla luce
della continua e forte domanda e della crescita
economica sul mercato cinese presumiamo
che gli effetti regionali sullo sviluppo
del business di Heidelberg siano solo
di natura temporanea”. E l’azienda continuerà
ad adottare tutte le opportune misure
per proteggere la ripresa. Dirk Kabe-
F&C
Magazine 23
Event
Eventi
le, direttore finanziario di Heidelberg (CFO),
sostiene: “Porteremo avanti la nostra strategia
vincente soprattutto attraverso una
costante gestione di costi e risorse”.
Persino le aziende del settore della stampa
che si sono assicurate prestiti bancari
non erano disposte ad investire ingenti
somme in nuovi impianti a causa delle prospettive
economiche incerte, mentre tutti
ridurre i propri costi. “I clienti che lottavano
per la loro sopravvivenza hanno iniziato,
come del resto ci aspettavamo, ad implementare
misure per l’abbattimento dei
costi e ogni spesa, per quanto piccola fosse,
veniva analizzata prima di essere approvata”,
afferma Fabian Prudhomme, vice-presidente
di Enfocus. “In generale,
l’altro viviamo ancora, siano molto consapevoli
dei costi. Quando investono o prendono
decisioni in merito alle spese di un
budget, si tratta perlopiù di spese veramente
necessarie. Prodotti e soluzioni che
“sarebbe bello avere” sono scomparsi definitivamente
dall’orizzonte”.
fatto. Tale manovra ci ha costretto a
concentrarci sui servizi core ed eliminare,
il più possibile, iniziative che non portavano
nessun risultato in termini monetari”.
Un nuovo approccio
I produttori hanno adottato un nuovo approccio
per aiutare i loro clienti ad attraversare
la recessione. In passato, le aziende
vendevano semplicemente un dispositivo
oppure una macchina offrendo un contratto
per l’assistenza e garanzia. Oggi, i
Mark Lawn, direttore marketing
quali Presstek, Ricoh, Kodak e Fuji,
in modo sicuro in acque agitate. Andrew
In tempi
Druck & Medien, bvdm, ovvero
l’Associazione Federale per la Stampa
& Media, Rolf Schwarz e Thomas Meyer
parlano di “trasformazione verso la sostenibilità”
dell’industria della stampa. “La crisi
ha intensificato e accelerato il cambio
strutturale nel settore….Il fatturato, il numero
delle aziende e quello dei dipendenti
in questo settore stanno diminuendo. Sono
richiesti nuovi concept per rendere forti
le aziende in un clima estremamente
competitivo” proseguono. Il BVDM sta promuovendo
questi nuovi concept organizzando
spirale accelererà i tempi. Le aziende
che operano nel settore della stampa ormai
non si possono più affidare alla carta,
ma devono tenere d’occhio altre strade
creative cercando di associare la carta (che
penso scomparirà prossimamente) a meccanismi
moderna”.
Certamente il passaggio alla comunicazione
cross-media rappresenta, di fatto, una
opportunità chiave che le aziende di successo
hanno saputo utilizzare. Nick Dixon
commenta in merito: “Quando le aziende
continuano a produrre un solo prodotto in
concorrenza sul prezzo, allora si entra in
una sorta di spirale verso il basso.
E proprio questo lo abbiamo vissuto prima
e durante la recessione: durante la recessione,
infatti, i clienti hanno ridotto i loro
budget pubblicitari, molto più spinti a cercare
l’efficienza mantenendo inalterata l’efficacia.
Siccome
i clienti del nostro settore sono ora
alla ricerca di campagne pubblicitarie convenienti
piuttosto che una stampa commerciale
a basso prezzo, le aziende di
stampa non possono più fare affidamento
sui prodotti industriali e sui prezzi bassi per
potersi distinguere: la stampa si deve adat-
tare se vuole sopravvivere”.
Un continuo consolidamento
Vero è che l’ampia disponibilità a basso
costo della stampa era già in atto prima
della recessione; ha aumentato il passo
durante la congiuntura negativa quando le
aziende tentarono di compensare gli ordinativi
persi tagliando i costi.
possibili i progressi.
d’investimento Walstead Investments
ha avviato, ad esempio, il consolidamento
tramite l’acquisto di Wyndeham, di
Southerprint e della divisione web della St.
Ives. Quindi, le conseguenze della recessione
sul mercato britannico delle riviste
possono essersi rivelate, in definitiva, positive
baratro come nell’ultima recessione. Ancora
Interviste
Interview with Michele
Querini, managing
director at Colorprint
Querini Michele Amministratore delegato Colorprint
Mr. Querini, can you tell us something about
Colorprint and its history, please?
Colorprint was founded in 1981 by the
current President Paolo Querini and celebrates
the thirtieth anniversary this year. The strength
and the determination of the President have allowed
the company, at once, to grow in a market
where there were much larger and more consolidated
realities. Nowadays me and my sister
Margherita, we also contribute to run the company
as technical sales manager and as administrative
director respectively. The geographical
position of the current headquarters in Coseano,
which is situated a few kilometers far from Udine
and therefore from the border with Austria, Slovenia
and Croatia, led Colorprint to develop not only
in Italy, but especially in the countries of Central
Europe and in the basin of the Mediterranean.
The presence of the company on foreign markets
has been consolidated both with the creation
of their companies in Hungary, Romania,
Bulgaria, Poland and Slovakia and with the establishment
of intensive collaborations with distribution
companies in other countries. As CEO,
currently, I have strengthened the internal distribution
network that is growing due to the increased
sales force employed and the best coverage
of the areas. This year, Colorprint, on the
occasion of the International Year of Chemistry
has adhered to "open factories" an initiative organized
by Federchimica, which promoted the
opening of the company to the public and the
community.
Which kind of environmental measures has adopted
a company that produces inks, and that is basically
a chemical industry?
The company ensures the respect of the regulations
in force through a system of internal procedures
of technical solutions that ensure the safe
handling and the safe use of products to protect
the environment. The optimization of production
processes pursued in recent years has brought
to a considerable drop in the industrial waste. Particular
attention has been paid to renewable
sources, and energy saving through the implementation
of a photovoltaic system that will cover
30% of energy needs. Furthermore, keeping
always an eye to continuous improvement, we
just started the process for the environmental certification
in accordance with the rule ISO 14001.
Are the difficulties of graphic industry affecting the
world of ink?
Considering that Colorprint’s production is diversified
among flexographic, rotogravure and
sheetfed offset inks, in every sector there are different
situations. The current crisis has affected
all sectors of the market by focusing the attention
on the lowest price, sometimes at the expense
of product quality and service. In our sector
the sheetfed offset printing is currently experiencing
the greatest difficulties, both because it
was hit by the crisis and because of the advancement
of new technologies which brings to
a very aggressive competition. The flexographic
and rotogravure printing industry, which is
turned over to the food and pharmaceutical sectors,
has maintained the sales levels despite the
crisis.
In which direction is the research for new products
moving?
The research and development of our inks are
aimed at ensuring the high performance demands
of the most important and advanced
packaging and printing quality required by the
continuous technological innovation.
The series that best represent our state of art are,
as concerns flexographic inks for lamination, the
Propaflex RFS AC, the Flexoester PU series and
the new Flexomyl series. The Termosac series is
ideal for external printing where a high resistance
to chemical agents and light is required. As concerns
rotogravure inks there are the Proparoto
AC series and the new Rotomyl series. As for
inks ideal for dry offset printing for aluminum
packaging, we are finishing the test phase of the
Tube USSCIV-12 PES series, which is an evolution
of the tested Tube USSCIV-08 PES suitable
for intended for printing of small tubes.
Moreover, thanks to the close collaboration established
with a major company in the field, we
developed a new series Inks For Cans RG32 for
the printing of mono-block cylinder and aluminum
packaging.
What are your sales areas and what do you think the
future market scenarios will be?
Our efforts are targeted to a greater penetration
into the Italian market with the aim to increase
our market share and to consolidate the foreign
markets with particular attention to the Polish
and Russian ones.
For the future, the greatest concern is the rising
cost of raw materials, which still seems to have
run its course. By contrast, companies that use
it, find it difficult to bring these costs increases,
in a market that is not always willing to absorb
them.
realtà molto più grandi e consolidate;
ad oggi contribuiamo alla conduzione dell’azienda
anche io in qualità di direttore tecnico-commerciale
e mia sorella Margherita,
in Ungheria, Romania, Bulgaria,Polonia e Repubblica
Slovacca, sia con l'instaurarsi di intense
collaborazioni con aziende di distribuzione
Come Amministratore delegato attualmente
Una azienda che produce inchiostri
e che sostanzialmente
è una industria chimica
quali misure ha adottato
per il rispetto dell’ambiente?
L’azienda assicura il rispetto
delle norme cogenti
attraverso un sistema
di procedure interne di
soluzioni tecniche che garantiscono la movimentazione
e l’utilizzo in sicurezza dei prodotti
per la salvaguardia dell’ambiente. L’ottimizzazione
notevolmente diminuiti i rifiuti industriali. Particolare
attenzione è stata rivolta alle fonti rinnovabili
quindi al risparmio energetico attraverso
la realizzazione di un impianto fotovoltaico
che coprirà il 30% dell’attuale bisogno
energetico. Inoltre, in un’ ottica di miglioramento
continuo, l’azienda ha iniziato da poco
l’iter per la certificazione ambientale secondo
la norma ISO 14001.
Le difficoltà del settore grafico stanno influenzando
il mondo degli inchiostri?
Considerando che la produzione della Colorprint
è diversificata tra inchiostri flexografici
rotocalco e offset a foglio, in ogni comparto
ci sono diverse situazioni. L’attuale crisi
serie collaudata Tube USSCIV-08 PES destinata
e russo.
Reporting with links to errors
Enfocus Senior Product Manager, Andrew
Bailes-Collins, credits an in-depth Instant
PDF customer survey for giving the company
critical information regarding market
needs. “Instant PDF users have made it clear
that they trust and rely on Enfocus’ error reporting,
but don’t want to waste time searching
for identified errors,” he says of the request
for improved reporting. “They want to
see the problem areas through an annotated
report, so that the problems can be quickly
resolved, allowing them to move on to the
next job and save valuable time.”
cense often costs less that a single “make
good” on a print job -- where the “make
good” could have been avoided by using Instant
PDF in the first place.
Analysis of the afore-mentioned customer
survey, administered earlier this year, highlighted
the fact that more than 90% of those
participating believe Instant PDF is easy to
use and easy to understand, and that 86%
believe Instant PDF to be a “very good value
for money”.
“You get Enfocus’ full preflight and error correction
for a fraction of the cost,” says Bailes-
Collins. “Users now can remedy problems
faster, with reports linking precisely to identified
areas. Survey respondents already like Instant
PDF -- the release of Instant PDF 10 could increase
their satisfaction, if that’s possible!”
Enfocus Instant PDF 10 semplifica la produzione
di PDF pronti per la stampa da
parte dei creativi professionisti. Grazie alla
premiata tecnologia Enfocus Certified
semplice e affidabile per creare PDF
conformi alle specifiche relative alla stampa
e alla pubblicità.
Funzionalità di report con link agli errori
Andrew Bailes-Collins, senior product
settore. “Gli utenti di Instant PDF giudicano
utile e affidabile la funzionalità di report
degli errori, ma non vogliono spendere
del tempo per la ricerca degli errori
identificati” ha affermato spiegando le
motivazioni della richiesta da parte degli
utilizzatori di un sistema di report ottimizzato.
“Preferiscono vedere i problemi mediante
più richiesta
poterli risolvere rapidamente e passare all'operazione
tempo prezioso.”
Compatibilità con i principali standard e con
le applicazioni più diffuse
Poiché Instant PDF 10 è basato sull'ultima
versione di PitStop Library, gli operatori
possono avvalersi dello stesso livello
strumenti efficacissimi a disposizione
dei designer.
Tra questi: compatibilità con l'ultima versione
di Apple OS; le più recenti applicazioni
Adobe e Acrobat/Distiller; i precedenti
evitata utilizzando proprio
Instant PDF.
Dall'analisi del sondaggio citato prima
e condotto quest'anno, risulta
che oltre il 90% degli intervistati ritiene
Instant PDF facile da usare e
intuitivo, e l'86% lo ritiene un prodotto
ad elevato valore aggiunto.
“Si ottiene la funzionalità di preflight
e correzione completa garantita da
Enfocus per una frazione del costo”
ha spiegato Andrew Bailes-Collins.
“Ora gli utenti possono risolvere i
problemi in modo più rapido, con report
che rimandano direttamente alle
aree identificate.
Visto che, come risulta dal sondaggio,
gli utenti apprezzano già Instant
PDF, il lancio di Instant PDF 10 potrà
accrescere ulteriormente la loro
soddisfazione, se questo è possibile!”
The Cham Paper Group charts
the course for the future
The Cham Paper Group is responding
to the fast-paced economic climateprecipitated
primarily by forex effects
and recharting its course for the future.
Cham Paper's strong market position is secured
by: Focussing production on surface
coating, Cham Paper's core competency
atthe Cham site; injecting vigor into innovation
in a technology and R&D center forsustainable
operations to the euro zone; the Group's
return to profitability will be ensured by way
of sitelocation and product portfolio optimization
throughout the entire Groupwith the
objective of improving cost structures and
lessening the Group'sdependence on the
development of the Swiss franc: Concentration
of the Group's product line on higher-margin
products; shutting down base paper
production in Cham by the end of 2013;
gradual expansion of production capacity in
Italy; relocation of selected product groups
to Italy; This reorganization will lead to a gradual
reduction in the workforce at Cham. This
process will take place inclose collaboration
with social partner organizations and cantonalgovernment
agencies.
The proposed development of the site situated
along the Lorze River, nowno longer required,
into a new residential and commercial
district willopen up new perspectives for
the Cham Paper Group, the community of
Chamand the surrounding region.
The Cham Paper Group, a leading specialty
paper manufacturer, isreorienting its
course for the future. After performing a thoroughevaluation
of all possible strategic options,
the Board of Directors andthe Executive
Management Board are initiating a comprehensive
restructuringof the Group to sustainably
secure the Group's future for the
comingdecade.
The measures initiated take the economic
and locational situationof the surrounding
community into account while leveraging the
developmentpotential of all of the Group's
assets. The strength of the Swiss franc isforcing
the Group to relocate a large portion
of its production capacity tothe euro zone.
The Cham Paper Group brand has an outstanding
reputation in Europe andAsia. The
Group's core competency - recognized in
the marketplace - iscoming to be increasingly
focussed on the coating and surface
treatment ofpaper.
Thanks to its in-depth coating know-how
and expertise in dealingwith innovative technologies
such as curtain coating, Cham Paper
is able tooffer products to its customers
that provide for process optimization andnew
solutions, i.e. genuine competitive advantages.
One exciting newdevelopment is
barrier coatings without the use of aluminum
and plastic, apioneering step in the food
packaging industry in particular. The Cham-
Paper Group is positive that these products
will help it to generateattractive returns in the
long term. However, not all specialty papers
require the same high level of expertise.Price
pressure is mounting, particularly in industrial
applications such asrelease liners for labels
and graphic arts applications (CCK or
clay-coatedkraft); the requirements made of
production efficiency and locational andcost
advantages are becoming more exacting.
Forex effects have causedprofitable production
to no longer be possible for large
portions of thismarket segment in Switzerland.
Relocation to the euro zone is of interestin
terms of sustainability only for part of
these products.
The ConsumerGoods and Digital Imaging
products and glassine papers are more attractivein
the long run. The Group has managed
to show profitable growth here foryears
now and the long-term prospects are also
favorable. Portfolio optimization and the reorganization
of production allocation willsubstantially
improve cost structures and
create currency neutrality. In order to ensure
a sustainable return to profitability, the Cham
PaperGroup will have to quickly withdraw
from less attractive markets inSwitzerland
and Italy. The utilization of production capacity
can bethoroughly reorganized and optimized
on a per-location basis by thesimultaneous
relocation of selected product
groups to Italy.
The Cham site intends to focus on its core
competency, surface coating. Tobe sure, the
new curtain-coated specialty papers for the
Consumer Goodssegment and the increasingly
popular Digital Imaging products are tocontinue
to be produced in Switzerland in
the future as well. In order forthe Cham mill
with its special coating machines to be able
to focusentirely on the high value-adding and
thus less forex-sensitive surfacetreatment
technologies, base paper is to be sourced
Il Cham Paper Group getta
le basi per il futuro
Per reagire ai rapidi cambiamenti delle
condizioni quadro, soprattutto a seguito
attraverso:
una focalizzazione della produzione sulla
competenza chiave rivestimento superficiale
presso la sede di Cham;
nel settore Digital Imaging a Cham;
margini più elevati;
cessazione della produzione di carta grezza
a Cham entro fine 2013;
Progressivo ampliamento della capacità produttiva
in Italia;
Trasferimento di gruppi di prodotti selezionati
in Italia.
residenziale e commerciale crea nuove
decade.
propria produzione nell'Eurozona.
Il marchio Cham Paper Group gode in Europa
ed Asia di un'ottima reputazione. La
competenza chiave riconosciuta alla società
dal mercato sempre più quella nel campo
del rivestimento risp. del trattamento superficiale
delle carte. Grazie alla propria elevata
competenza nella tecnica della spalmatura
e nella gestione di tecnologie innovative come
quella del Curtain Coating, Cham Paper
poi offrire prodotti che permettono di ottimizzare
i processi, realizzare nuove soluzioni
e ottenere quindi reali vantaggi competitivi.
Glassine. In questi settori il gruppo fa registrare
da anni una crescita redditizia e anche
le prospettive a lungo termine sono buone.
L'ottimizzazione della gamma e la riorganizzazione
dell'allocazione della produzione migliorano
notevolmente la struttura dei costi
e creano neutralità rispetto alle valute. Per
superficiale.
fabbricati in Svizzera.
possa concentrare pienamente sui trattamenti
I cambiamenti programmati comporteranno
la cessazione della produzione di
carta grezza a Cham. E' previsto che la macchina
continua PM4 venga messa fuori servizio
nella prima metà del 2012 e la macchina
continua PM5 entro la fine del 2013 al più
tardi.
Consumer Goods, in particolare sui prodotti
di packaging flessibili, e la sua produzione
puÚ essere potenzialmente ampliata.
Le consegne al mercato cinese in crescita
verranno effettuate dall'Europa.
labels and packaging
HP announced the industry’s most
versatile and productive digital label
press, the HP Indigo WS6600 digital
press, which is capable of printing more
than 40 linear meters (131 linear feet) per
minute in full colour and features a new inline
priming unit.
Other features for improved productivity include
a new common digital front-end (DFE)
the WS4600 digital press, with an option for
full-colour throughput of more than 21 linear
meters (69 linear feet) per minute. Both the
WS6600 and WS4600 deliver higher
throughput via a new enhanced productivity
mode developed by HP.
Participants in a blind-test packaging industry
label sample evaluation said they preferred
HP Indigo print quality over flexography
now available in the Netherlands, Belgium
and Luxembourg and is open to all HP Indigo
customers in those countries.
A better brand experience
HP Indigo presses offer an all-digital production
method that requires little in the way
of make-ready, start-up time or minimum
run-length requirements. This can help create
greater shelf impact and increase customer
profit through reduced waste and obsolescence,
streamlined multi-SKU marketing
and versioning, and faster implementation
of new designs. HP Indigo’s proven and
High quality to cost
efficiency
DSN, targeting global
brand owners, takes color
management to a higher
level with Equinox
Internationally renowned prepress specialist
De Schutter Neroc (DSN) is using
Esko Equinox to provide brand owners
and printers with unique color and quality
management technology. “By fully understanding
customers’ needs and the technological
capabilities of the print providers, DSN
is in an ideal position to get the very best results
by introducing Equinox to the packaging
market,” says DSN Quality Manager
Joachim De Bue.
Targeting global brand owners
Prepress and packaging have always been
at the heart of the Belgium-based company,
which started in 1944 as De Schutter, a family-owned
business in Antwerp. Continual innovation
has enabled the company to alleviate
time pressures, drive down costs and
respond to evolving market needs.
Today, DSN has facilities in the Netherlands,
Germany and the Czech Republic and employs
300 people. The company provides
global brand owners with design, artwork
and prepress specialties, and is aiming to
strengthen the bond between brands and
consumers by providing color consistency in
packaging printing. Currently, DSN mainly
serves the Emea market, but aspires to be
a global service provider in the near future.
Moving up the print value chain
Quality Manager Joachim De Bue works for
over 13 years at DSN and is responsible for
the relationship between customers and
printer providers when it comes to the quality
of print. “In the past, printers used to be
our main clients. But we now have a new position
in the value chain, closer to the brand
owners that order the final product. Being involved
at an early stage in the production
process means we are able to provide
greater benefits to both parties," explains De
Bue. “Centrally managed digital files production
ensure consistent quality – and this
is something where Esko Equinox helps
enormously.”
A next level of color and quality control
Around five years ago DSN started to ‘fingerprint’
every print provider it was sending
files to. De Bue describes how the process
impacts the quality of the end product:
“Many of our clients work with local print and
packaging providers, as they like them to be
close to their production facilities. As a result,
we deliver our files to some 750 different
print providers across Europe. By ‘fingerprinting’
them, we have managed to build
a database of more than 1,000 unique profiles,
with information about the different
presses they use and the substrates they
print on.“We visited many different sites to
explain the process and conducted a lot of
test printing. Subsequently our database
now lets us match the needs of the brand
owner with the technological capabilities of
the preferred print provider, - he continues.
- However we don’t tell a printer how they
should be printing or force them into a standardized
way of working. We take a good
look at what they have to offer and provide
them with tailored, fully optimized print-ready
files, enabling them to deliver high-quality
print in a very efficient and consistent
way.”With its highly developed specialties
and knowledge, DSN is an ideal company
to implement the Esko prepress solutions.
The company was already involved with
Equinox years ago and saw the product further
develop into the practical tool it is today.
“With Equinox, we can build on our ‘fingerprint’
experience and take color and quality
control to the next level,” says De Bue.
For more than a year now, DSN has been
putting Equinox to the test for one of its
biggest clients – brand owner Sara Lee.
Equinox enhances quality and productivity
Equinox is a color space enhancing system,
and is in some ways comparable to systems
like HexaChrome. By adding extra colors to
the traditional CMYK range, it enables printers
to achieve more and better color in a very
consistent, efficient and cost effective way.
With Equinox, printers do not have to change
inks for each and every job anymore, so they
are able to increase productivity of their
presses while reducing costs of inks. At the
same time, quality and consistency improve
- fulfilling exactly the needs of brand owners
General news
that are looking for reduced costs without
compromising accurate colors and even improved
quality printing.
Equinox does not prescribe how many inks,
or which type of inks, should be used like
some other multi-color systems. Instead it
works the other way around, taking into account
the capabilities of a printer’s presses
and then targets the best result that can be
achieved: “We don’t want to force brand
owners or printers into a limiting system, -
explains De Bue. - We look for a way to get
the best result for both parties without compromising
on cost nor quality”. Equinox
makes that possible, by letting us define the
best color space for every client and range
of jobs. We analyze a client’s portfolio and
decide where we need to focus our prepress
attention to enhance overall print quality. By
using up to a maximum of eight colors,
Equinox lets printers use their own preferred
type of inks to maximize the color space they
can achieve in print, which ensures customers
have their brand presented in the
highest quality, consistently with lower
costs.”
Improving quality and efficiency
De Bue explains how Equinox has strengthened
DSN’s role in the print supply chain.
“We always want to be ahead of the game.
We started to test Equinox even before there
was a specific demand from our customers
or suppliers. We learned that Equinox enabled
us to strategically position ourselves
between customers and suppliers. On the
one hand, brand owners and marketers are
always looking for new ways to enhance
quality – color is a big issue for them, as it
influences a consumer’s decision whether to
buy a certain product or not. And at the same
time, print buyers always want to lower
costs.
On the other hand, printers can be quite conservative,
preferring to keep doing what
they’re used to doing, leaving little room to
improve quality or offer lower prices.“By using
the Equinox system, we can strike the
perfect compromise and offer advantages to
both clients and suppliers. We can guarantee
consistent and improved print quality to
the brand owner. And the printer can choose
to have a fixed set of five to eight colors on
its press to achieve this consistent quality,
instead of having to continually switch from
one set of process colors to the next. This
makes production far more efficient, saving
the printer lots of time and materials, enhancing
overall production capacity.”
Prepress automation
DSN also enjoys significant benefits using
Equinox: “EskoArtwork Equinox is an open
system. This means we can use the software
in the way that suits us best, and it enables
us to translate a wide variety of creative data
into files that can be handled flawlessly by
any of the 750 printers we deliver them to.
This is very important to us. As we produce
more than 30,000 varieties of packaging
each year, we need to highly automate our
workflow without compromising accuracy or
flexibility.” DSN is well positioned to strengthen
its relationships with brand owners and
suppliers, as the company has the expert
knowledge to connect the right content to
the right technology.
Proof in print
DSN is very impressed with the impact of
Equinox. For Sara Lee, Equinox was introduced
at three print providers, offering different
print technologies. “Everybody is very
happy with what has been achieved,” says
De Bue, who is convinced that other clients
and printers will follow.
“Especially Western-Europe is probably the
most difficult market for Equinox to impress,
as this market is very much focused on quality
and less on costs.
In other parts of the world, markets are more
cost driven and we notice a higher willingness
to go further, and provide unique service
offerings. But regardless of the region,
Equinox has a lot to offer in terms of increasing
efficiency, quality and customer satisfaction.
And DSN intends to be on the forefront
of this important development."
Alta qualità ed
efficienza dei costi
DSN, si rivolge ai proprietari
di marchi globali, grazie a
Equinox, ha portato la
gestione del colore a un
livello superiore
Lo specialista della prestampa De
Schutter Neroc (DSN) sta usando
dice Joachim De Bue, DSN Quality Manager.
L'innovazione
in continua evoluzione.
Oggi, DSN dispone di strutture in Olanda,
Germania e Repubblica Ceca e impiega 300
persone.
"In passato erano nostri principali
clienti soprattutto
gli stampatori. Ma
ora abbiamo una nuova
posizione nella catena
del valore, siamo
più vicini ai proprietari
dei marchi rispetto all'ordine
del prodotto
finale.
tutta Europa.
standardizzato.
qualità e in modo molto efficiente e costante”.
a HexaChrome. Con l'aggiunta
di colori extra alla gamma CMYK, consente
agli stampatori di ottenere un numero maggiore
di colori, una maggiore qualità, in modo
costante, efficiente e conveniente. Con
Equinox, gli stampatori non devono più cambiare
inchiostri a ogni lavoro, quindi sono in
grado di aumentare la produttività delle loro
macchine, riducendo i costi degli inchiostri.
Allo stesso tempo, possono migliorare
uniformità e qualità, soddisfando proprio le
esigenze dei proprietari di marchi che desiderano
ridurre i costi senza compromettere
inferiori."
"Abbiamo iniziato a testare Equinox ancor
prima che ci fosse una domanda specifica
dei nostri clienti o fornitori. Equinox ci ha permesso
di posizionarci strategicamente tra
clienti e fornitori.
Dall'altro i print buyer vogliono
ridurre i costi. E gli stampatori, erroneamente,
preferiscono continuare a fare
perfetto e offrire vantaggi a clienti
e fornitori.
stampare a 5-8 colori, senza dover passare
