Protection of
the Child Rights
under the Geneva
Conventions
MARIAM JIKIA
Doctor of Law, Assistant Professor at Humanitarian
and Social Faculty Georgian technical University
The article discusses the children who are the subject of special protection
of the Geneva Conventions the Protocols thereof.
The statistical data show that armed conflicts affect the civil society, especially
children. This is not a sheer coincidence because mostly the children are
those who comprise the group of population whose rights are violated in a
war. The crimes committed against the children during the armed conflicts
lead to catastrophic (devastating) physical and psychological results.
There are many cases of using minors as soldiers. And there are many cases
when children are victims of sexual violence.
The article canvasses not only the facts but also the current mechanisms of
child protection as well as the cases which were heard by the Military Tribunals
of Rwanda and Yugoslavia. It also offers probable measures to be introduced
in order to the make a certain contribution to the protection of the child
rights during armed conflicts.
