Aims<br />

The course aims at introducing the<br />

applied economists’ point of view on firm<br />

behaviour in not perfectly competitive<br />

markets.<br />

Basic microeconomics is a prerequisite,<br />

but the main concepts will be re-examined<br />

whenever required. Many cases will<br />

be <strong>di</strong>scussed, drawing on currently available<br />

information.<br />

The examination will be in written form,<br />

but it can be partially substituted by an<br />

in<strong>di</strong>vidual or group seminar to be held<br />

during the term.<br />

Aims<br />

The course examines the <strong>di</strong>stinctive characteristics<br />

of Italian industry, studying its<br />

historical evolution in the XIX and XX<br />

centuries and highlighting various<br />

socioeconomic aspects and their relationship<br />

with the other business sectors.<br />

Contents<br />

This course goes through the main steps<br />

that Italian industry has taken from 1861<br />

until today, focusing on the evolution of<br />

companies, markets, institutions and<br />

technologies. The following aspects will<br />

be considered: the birth of very large<br />

firms and protectionist policy; transformations<br />

during the Age of Giolitti; Italian<br />

industry from the first world war to<br />

expansion in the 20s; the 1929 crisis and<br />

the autarchic turning-point; post-war<br />

reconstruction; the ‘economic miracle’;<br />

power industry nationalization; the crisis<br />

between 1965 and 1975; industry reorganization<br />

and growth between 1975 and<br />

1985; the <strong>di</strong>fficult beginning of privatizations<br />

and the European integration<br />

process; Italian companies between 1985<br />

and 1996.<br />
