FINANCIAL AND BANKING HISTORY Prof. Paolo Pecorari Aims The course outlines the evolution of financial markets and banking systems with regard to modern economies and as an answer to the demand for credit. In particular, the contemporary models adopted by the various financial intermediaries will be considered, underlining the role of institutional factors. Contents International financial banking markets (England, France, Germany, Russia, the USA, Japan) in the XIX and XX centuries. The Italian banking system from 1861 to the end of the XX century, focusing on the credit function of the real economy, on its role in development processes and on institutional changes. In particular, the focus of analysis will be on the characteristics and peculiarities of the national banking system in the first thirty years after unification, the birth of the mixed bank, the growth of the central bank, transformation during the republican age and the passage from state ownership to privatization.
