CARRIERS ONE STEP ANO<strong>THE</strong>R ONE STILL ANO<strong>THE</strong>R Ten nights have already passed since the day we left. There is a scent of wood in the cold humidity at dawn. A smell of juniper, of wild animal’s dung, and of farmyard animals. A scent of home. That morning the lama celebrated a Puja in our honor, reciting a mantra and offering tributes to the divinity so that She could assist us with her benevolence on our way:”the mountains are the kingdom of the gods, it is not good to disturb their sleep”. Traditions live with him. But it is a different motivation that pushes us forward, the youngest : the need of money, the ambition to become a Sherpa, the desire of touching with our own hands the progress and balance, that which, the alpinists contaminate with their presence. This day we are a hundred, strong backs and quick feet. Some of us come from downtown, Kathmandu. Others have traveled from the outlying villages. The war wages over the mountains and many of us haven’t had the courage to leave. The Maoists decide who can pass and who cannot, so between us there is also someone recruited into the Khali’s Valley, people of “ them”. The alpinists are not aware of the plague that is mutilating us. They come here with their thirst for conquest: they want to be quick, reach the apex, and sign history with their names. They don’t have time for our problems. Some of them are kind; they talk with us, they offer us a drink of Khukri Rum or maybe some cigarettes. Others, have in their eyes the expression of someone who cannot see dignity beneath the dirt of our faces. We live here with few possessions. The Occidentals call it “poverty” and look at us with pity, paying us to carry around their luggage. I, on the contrary, call this freedom. ONE STEP ANO<strong>THE</strong>R ONE STILL ANO<strong>THE</strong>R As if we have crossed an undetectable line, all of the sudden, our breath is short. The basket I carry swings heavily, pushing my neck with its cargo. The light is blinding and inhospitable. The air up here belongs only to spirits and birds. There are shadows you see swaying above your head at night. It is their breathing accompanies us as we stave off cold and fear, nestled like bees in our common tent. Rounded chests, as powerful as bellows, fill up and empty out rhythmically. With hearts and lungs, bigger than the lowlanders, the alpinists from the valley filter the air and give back their forces. Getting closer now.. The snow makes our walk insecure. Our plastic slippers, almost completely worn from use, slip off with syncopation. I take them off and walk barefoot. Large and callused feet move strong over the ice and rocks. They are almost impervious to pain. Abruptly, we reach the Mountain. I greet the divinity with respect who lives there. After emptying my basket, I begin to walk home. Here they are, the children, following the landscape with their shouts. The warm smell of the land reanimates our lungs while the country, happily, welcomes our return with joy. Winter is coming, but this year, it will certainly be less hard. Thanks to this brief expedition, we have gained the same amount of money it would have taken us months earn. Now that the alpinists are back to their lives, we can proceed with ours. We will continue carry our baskets through the slow changing of the seasons. The Occidentals regard our work as hard and humiliating. In their eyes we earn miserable sums of money, enduring hard conditions. For us, it is nothing more than everyday life; it is part of a culture that protracts itself from centuries, back from the most tender years of childhood, into the strength of old age. With an eye to the sky and the other on land, I thank the gods for their benevolence. LEILA MEROI PORTATORI UN PASSO UN ALTRO UN ALTRO ANCORA Sono trascorse già dieci notti dal giorno in cui siamo partiti. L’odore di legna nell’umido freddo dell’alba. Odore di ginepro, di sterco e animali da cortile. Odore di casa. Quella mattina il lama ha celebrato una Puja in nostro onore, recitando mantra e offrendo omaggi alla divinità affinchè assista con benevolenza il nostro cammino al suo cospetto: “Le montagne sono il regno degli Dei, non è bene disturbare il loro riposo”. In lui vivono le tradizioni. Ma diversa è la spinta che invita il passo di noialtri: il bisogno di denaro, l’ambizione di diventare climbing sherpa, il desiderio di assaggiare il progresso con cui gli alpinisti contaminano il nostro equilibrio. Stavolta siamo in cento, schiene forti e piedi veloci. Alcuni arrivano dalla città, Kathmandu, altri dai villaggi lì intorno. Sulle montagne infuria la guerra e in molti non hanno avuto il coraggio di partire. Sono i maoisti a decidere chi passa e chi no. Gli alpinisti non si sono accorti della peste che ci sta mutilando. Vengono qui con sete di conquista: vogliono fare veloci, andare in alto e firmare la storia con i loro nomi. Non hanno tempo per le nostre faccende. Alcuni sono gentili, parlano con noi, ci offrono un po’ di Khukri Rum o magari qualche sigaretta. Altri no e nei loro occhi puoi talvolta scorgere l’espressione di chi non vede, sotto lo sporco dei nostri volti, la dignità vera dell’uomo. Noi qui viviamo di poco e possediamo ancor meno. Gli occidentali la chiamano “povertà” e ci guardano con biasimo, pagandoci tuttavia per portare in giro i loro bagagli pieni di cose. Io al contrario, questa la chiamo libertà. UN PASSO UN ALTRO UN ALTRO ANCORA Come valicata una linea impercettibile d’un tratto il respiro si fa corto. Il bastino dondola pesante, schiacciando il collo con il prezioso carico e il passo si trascina lento, nel desolante bianco del ghiacciaio. Non c’è vita per noi, in questa luce accecante. L’aria quassù è fatta per spiriti ed uccelli. Sono loro le ombre che vedi ondeggiare oltre il tuo capo. E’ loro il respiro che ti accompagna la notte quando, per sentire meno il freddo, ti stringi al corpo del tuo vicino, annidati come api nella tenda comune. Ora, come un potente mantice, il torace rotondo si riempie e si svuota ritmicamente. Cuore e polmoni, più grandi dei lowlanders, gli alpinisti venuti dalla pianura, filtrano l’aria e restituiscono le forze. Manca poco ormai. La neve rende l’andare insicuro e le ciabattine di gomma, ormai logore dall’uso, continuano a sfilarsi sincopando il passo. Le tolgo e proseguo scalzo. I larghi piedi si muovono forti su ghiaccio e rocce. Lo zoccolo del callo li rende quasi insensibili al dolore. Poi d’un tratto, la montagna. Saluto con rispetto la divinità che vi dimora e, svuotato il bastino, guadagno nuovamente la strada di casa. Ecco i bambini a rincorrere di grida il nostro passaggio. Il caldo odore della terra rianima i polmoni e il paese, in festa, accoglie con gioia il nostro ritorno. L’inverno è vicino ma quest’anno sarà certamente meno duro: grazie alle spedizioni in pochi giorni abbiamo guadagnato quanto in mesi di pari duro lavoro. Così, ora che gli alpinisti sono tornati alle loro vite, noi proseguiamo serenamente con le nostre. Col bastino, nei campi, continueremo a trasportare pesi nel lento scorrere delle stagioni. Perchè quello che per gli occidentali è un lavoro duro e umiliante, pagato con misere somme e portato avanti nelle condizioni più estreme, per noi non è che normalità. La normalità di una cultura che si protrae da secoli, dalla più tenera infanzia del bambino sino a che le forze sono in grado di sostenerlo, ormai anziano.
