The Sacred Reatine Valley: the heart of the St. Francis Walk
Il Tempio di San Francesco
a 1.623 metri di quota
sul Monte Terminillo.
Il frutto di una lunga
opera di costruzione
dal 1949 al 1964.
The Temple of St. Francis
on Monte Terminillo,
at an altitude of 1623 metres,
was the result of many years
of building work
from 1949 to 1964.
MONTE TERMINILLO
Patrono d’Italia.
Leaving behind the Sacred Valley and climbing the slopes
of Mount Terminillo, the traveller encounters another
important site on the St. Francis Walk: the Votive Temple
of St. Francis in Terminillo. On the 18th of June 1939, Pope
Pius XII declared St. Francis of Assisi Patron Saint of Italy.
In memory of this occasion, the Friars Minor decided to
build a temple on Mount Terminillo, at an altitude of 1623
metres. Today the Temple is the resting place for an urn
containing the Saint’s remains.
