Una struttura d'avvistamento esisteva probabilmente già in epoca
romana. Un incerto riferimento colloca poi il maniero nel secolo
VIII, quando venne forse eretta la torre più in alto. La documentazione
sicura lo accerta comunque nel XII secolo come bene
allodiale della comunità, sulla quale i signori d'Arco esercitavano il
loro potere. L'insediamento, ritratto dal Dürer, è cresciuto fino a
diventare una sorta di villaggio fortificato, con torri, abitazioni, cortili
e strutture di servizio. Danneggiato nel 1703 dalle cannonate del
Vendôme cadde in lento abbandono. Recenti restauri negli ultimi
decenni hanno riportato alla luce interessanti testimonianze, fra le
quali una stanza decorata con pregevoli affreschi riconducibili allo
stile cortese della seconda metà del XIV secolo.
Vermutlich bestand schon in römischen Zeiten eine Anlage, die zur
Überwachung der damaligen Zufahrtsstraßen diente. Vage ist die Aussage, die
diese Burg dem 8. Jh. zuschreibt, in dem vermutlich der oberste Turm errichtet
wurde. Sicher sind auf jeden Fall die Unterlagen aus dem 12. Jh., in denen die
Burg als „Allod“ der Gemeinschaft erwähnt wird, in der die Herren von Arco ihre
Macht ausübten. Die auch von Dürer gemalte Burg dehnte sich im Laufe der
Zeit aus, bis sie zu einer Art Feste anwuchs, mit Türmen, Wohntrakten, Höfen
und Gebäuden für das Gesinde. 1703 durch die Kanonenschüsse der Truppen
von Vendôme beschädigt, verfiel die Burg allmählich zur Ruine. Die in den
letzten Jahrzehnten durchgeführten Restaurierungsarbeiten brachten
interessante Funde zutage, u. a. einen freskoverzierten Raum, dessen Stil auf
die zweite Hälfte des 14. Jh. zurückzuführen ist.
