Arte & cultura: due passi tra la storia
archaeological sites in the Alps.
Excavations carried out in recent
decades have brought to light a
series of buildings and numerous
protohistoric and Roman artifacts
which would seem to indicate a
complex associated with religious
worship. A Romanesque church was
also uncovered dedicated to the
patron saint of pilgrims, which is
mentioned in documents up to the
th
late 18 century. Some of the
material found is exhibited in the
Museo Civico in Riva del Garda.
33 Cascata del Varone
Rarità geologica risalente
all'epoca del Quaternario,
quando il grande ghiacciaio del
Garda stava scomparendo. La
forra si addentra sinuosa nella
cavità della roccia scavata
dall'acqua che precipita con un
salto di quasi cento metri. Lo
spettacolo si può ammirare sia
dal basso che dall'alto, con una
capacità di suggestione che ha
ispirato una celebre pagina di
Thomas Mann, giunto qui nel
1901. La costruzione all'ingresso
è stata progettata dall'architetto
Maroni adattando un vecchio
mulino.
Eine geologische Rarität aus dem
Quartär, als sich der große Gletscher
des Gardaseegebiets zurückzog.
Die Schlucht ist ganz besonders
eindrucksvoll und dringt bis in die
Windungen der vom Wasser
ausgehöhlten Felsen vor. Der
Wasserfall hat eine Sturzhöhe von
fast 100 m. Dieses Naturschauspiel -
man kann es entweder von unten
oder von oben bestaunen - regte
auch die Dichtkunst von Thomas
Mann an, der es 1901 bestaunte.
Der Eingang entstand nach einem
Entwurf des Arch. Maroni, der zu
diesem Zweck ein alte Mühle
umfunktionierte.
A geological rarity dating back to the
Quaternary period when the great
Garda glacier was retreating. The
magnificent gorge winds down the
cavity in the rock created by the
water which falls almost a hundred
metres. The spectacle can be
admired from below or above and
inspired a page in the work of
Thomas Mann, who came here in
1901. The building at the entrance
was designed by the architect
Maroni and is a converted mill.
