The Bastione was built by the Venetians at the end of 1507, two years before they lost control over Riva. It can be reached by an easy road which climbs through the countryside to about 200 m above sea level. A steeper path brings you to the church of Santa Barbara (610 m) and the higher peaks of Rocchetta (1520 m). Over the centuries, the Bastione has lost its original military function, but thanks also to recent restoration work, it has kept its rather forbidding charm. Visitors can admire the massive external walls and what remains of the interior. Another good reason to visit is the magnificent view over the town below and the panorama of Alto Garda. La Rocca ha accompagnato la storia del territorio, adattando il suo volto al mutare dei secoli. Nel primo Cinquecento viene abbellita e diventa anche saltuaria dimora dei principi vescovi. Subisce una trasformazione radicale alla metà dell'Ottocento, quando diventa caserma austroungarica e perde le sue caratteristiche medievali e rinascimentali. Bei kürzlich erfolgten Restaurierungsarbeiten kamen einige der ursprünglichen Formen wieder ans Tageslicht. It underwent a radical th transformation in the mid-19 century, when it was turned into an Austro-Hungarian barracks and lost all its medieval and renaissance features. Recent restoration work has revealed some of the original structures and made it a suitable home for the museum. La sezione archeologica, una della più importanti in ambito provinciale, espone le steli neolitiche rinvenute ad Arco, i segni della civiltà palafitticola di Ledro, i reperti della cultura preromana e romana provenienti dal castelliere San Martino, epigrafi e manufatti venuti alla luce nei diversi siti dell'Alto Garda. La pinacoteca documenta a sua volta un percorso artistico che va dal Quattrocento ai nostri giorni. Merita inoltre di essere visitata la sezione dedicata alla storia della città. Die archäologische Abteilung, übrigens eine der bedeutendsten des Trentino, stellt u. a. in Arco gefundene Stele aus der Jungsteinzeit, Reste aus der Zeit der Pfahlbautenbevölkerung in Ledro, Fundstücke aus der vorrömischen und der römischen Zeit - sie stammen vom Castelliere San Martino -, Inschriften und Handarbeiten aus, die bei verschiedenen Ausgrabungsarbeiten im Alto Garda ans Tageslicht kamen. Die Pinakothek dokumentiert einen künstlerischen Werdegang, der im 15. Jh. beginnt und bis in unsere Tage reicht. Ein Besuch in der Abteilung, die der Geschichte der Stadt gewidmet ist, lohnt sich.
