i corsi di formazione.
Attualmente, la rete
comprende 13 defibrillatori
dislocati oltre che nella
cementeria, nei cinema, nelle
palestre, in alcuni studi
medici, nella farmacia
comunale, in un istituto
tecnico professionale, in alcuni
campi sportivi (la cittadina ha
una forte tradizione nel gioco
del rugby), sulle autovetture
della Polizia Municipale, dei
Carabinieri e della Polizia di
Stato. Grazie alla sensibilità
dei cittadini, delle Istituzioni e
di aziende come Italcementi,
presto saremo in grado di
acquistare altri tre
defibrillatori”.
Anche in cementeria, quindi,
un gruppo di persone ha
seguito i corsi di formazione,
partecipando così in prima
persona al progetto di
defibrillazione precoce sul
territorio (P.A.D.) degli “Angeli
del Cuore”. Fino ad oggi a
Colleferro sono stati formati
circa 1200 First Responder
(primi soccorritori) con la
collaborazione dell’Università
di Roma.
Come ha accolto questa
iniziativa il personale
Italcementi? Lo chiediamo a
Spartaco Lolini, direttore della
cementeria.
“L’adesione al progetto è
stata entusiastica. Non
dimentichiamo che la
cementeria di Colleferro
tradizionalmente partecipa
alla vita della comunità, ed è
perfettamente inserita nel
tessuto sociale del territorio.
Nel 1990, per fare un
esempio, abbiamo contribuito
alla realizzazione dell’altare
della Chiesa di S. Barbara.
Nel 1995, abbiamo offerto il
cemento necessario alla
costruzione della Parrocchia e
della casa canonica di San
Bruno. La cementeria
è inoltre socia sostenitrice
dell’Associazione Pro
Universitarie di Colleferro, che
ha istituito il Corso di laurea in
Ingegneria Meccanica. Un
corso con indirizzi specifici
ispirati dall’economia del
territorio stesso, come quello
in Ingegneria per lo Spazio e
l’Ambiente. Non a caso, la
cementeria è sede di stage per
gli studenti dell’ultimo anno,
che qui elaborano le tesi di
laurea”.
Una dialettica tra
insediamento produttivo e
territorio che è tipica della
filosofia imprenditoriale
Italcementi e che ha trovato
nell’iniziativa degli “Angeli del
Cuore” un’ulteriore
affermazione.
“Abbiamo cominciato con
dieci dipendenti – spiega
Spartaco Lolini – che hanno
frequentato e superato con
esito positivo il corso di
abilitazione, e oggi sono in
grado di utilizzare un
defibrillatore semiautomatico.
Ma altri quindici si sono iscritti
al corso iniziato nel mese di
aprile di quest’anno, e presto
la nostra unità operativa
interna raggiungerà i 25
elementi. Un numero che
parla da solo, e illustra il
successo dell’iniziativa”.
Quello che avviene a
Colleferro è la manifestazione
di una politica aziendale
globale che si riflette in tutte
le realtà locali. L’assunzione di
una precisa responsabilità
verso il territorio e la comunità
che ospitano gli insediamenti
produttivi di Italcementi, alla
ricerca di equilibri più avanzati
che, accanto ai parametri
tradizionali, considerano come
obiettivi prioritari la salute, la
sicurezza, il rispetto
dell’ambiente e, in ultima
analisi, la qualità della vita.
■■■■■■
Italcementi provides the
Colleferro community
with its own portable
defibrillator
A sophisticated device made
its entry into the Italcementi
cement factory in Colleferro,
near Rome. The device is not
meant to boost productivity,
but to serve the much more
social useful purpose of saving
human lives. The donation of
a portable semi-automatic
defibrillator, as this piece of
equipment is called, is part of
a large-scale project conceived
by the “Angeli del Cuore”
(Angels of the Heart)
Association.
The program, initiated in
1999, involves setting up a
network of stations
throughout the country to
prevent sudden death from
heart attacks, a pathology
that strikes one Italian in a
thousand. In other words, an
all too frequent event, with
dramatic consequences and
extremely short intervention
times. After only five minutes,
the heart and brain suffer
irreversible damage.
Mario Del Prete, Chairman of
the “Angeli del Cuore”
Association and Councilor in
charge of Health for the
Colleferro Town Council had
this to say about the project:
“The only effective means of
prevention is to develop a
“smart” network of
emergency stations. Of
course, the equipment alone
is not enough; we also need
specially trained expert staff. It
is worth pointing out that
there is no need for a doctor
or nurse to be present.
Modern-day technology is
capable of developing semiautomatic
defibrillators that
detect cardiac arrhythmia and
activate electric shocks only
and exclusively in case of
ventricular fibrillation and
ventricular tachycardia.”
In this light, experiments
carried out in both the United
States and Europe are very
instructive. In cities where
only qualified medical staff
can intervene, New York for
instance, the percentage of
survivors is as low 1 to 2%,
mainly due to slow reaction
times. In contrast, in areas
with so-called capillary
diffusion and the intervention
of non-medical staff, such as
Rochester, Minnesota, survival
rates are as high as 47%.
In Italy, with over forty
thousand cases each year,
quick action – within those
fateful five minutes – would
save at least ten thousand
lives. “These figures are worth
thinking over,” Mario Del
Prete goes on to say, “and
they have motivated us in
setting up our project.
Colleferro is the second city,
after Piacenza, to set up this
network of first aid stations.
This makes us a pilot center,
also because our town is the
focal point for both industry
and business for an area
extending over approximately
100 kilometers and with a
population of 100,000.
Of course, this implies an
important commitment on the
part of the municipality, as
each defibrillator must be
manned by a team of specially
trained volunteers. At present,
in addition to the one in the
cement factory, the network
consists of 13 defibrillators
located in movie theaters,
gyms, a number of medical
centers, the local pharmacy, a
technical college, a few sports
fields (the town has a long
tradition of rugby), and in
Municipal, Military and State
Police cars. Thanks to the
commitment of local citizens,
institutions and businesses like
Italcementi, we will soon be
able to buy another three
defibrillators.”
A team from the cement
works also attended the
training courses, getting
directly involved in the “Angeli
del Cuore’s” project for
implementing rapid
defibrillation across the
territory (P.A.D.). So far, in
conjunction with Rome
University, approximately
1,200 “First Responders” have
been trained in Colleferro.
We asked Spartaco Lolini,
manager of the cement
works, how the Italcementi
staff reacted to this project?
“It was greeted with great
enthusiasm. Let’s not forget
that the Colleferro cement
factory traditionally plays an
active role in the life of the
community and is perfectly
integrated in the local social
fabric. For example, in 1990
we helped build the altar in
the Church of Santa Barbara.
In 1995 we provided the
concrete for the San Bruno
Parish and presbytery.
The factory has supported
the Colleferro Pro Universities
Association and its degree
course in mechanical
engineering. This course of
study offers majors in
Territorial Economics and
Environmental Engineering.
Not surprisingly, the cement
factory offers internships to
the previous year’s students,
who prepare their
dissertations here.”
The interaction between
production facilities and their
geographical location is
typical of Italcementi’s
business philosophy. The
“Angeli del Cuore” project is a
perfect example.
“We began with ten staff
members,” explains Spartaco
Lolini, “who attended and
successfully passed the
training course and are now
qualified to use a semiautomatic
defibrillator.
Another fifteen have signed
up for the course which
began in April of this year,
and soon our in-house
operating unit will consist of
25 operators. The figures
speak for themselves and
show how successful the
project has been.”
Colleferro is a concrete
example of a global company
policy reflected in every aspect
of the local community. This
policy reflects the concrete
commitments to the territory
and communities in which
Italcementi facilities are
established. The company’s
main objectives include the
quest for greater harmony
which, alongside more
traditional parameters,
incorporates health, safety,
the environment and,
ultimately, the quality of life.
