Qui tre centri storici: Feltre, Mel e Belluno.
copiose nevicate.
Dolomiti Belluno for me compie tre anni: così, per festeggiare.
Pio Grollo
Of course, first and foremost, Belluno is the province of the Dolomites, and the main reasons that attract visitors here are linked to those
superb mountains, the most beautiful in the world.
The Dolomites have now obtained deserved recognition as a world heritage site, and for this we have to thank not only the hand of
Nature, but also the efforts of all those men and women who have helped protect this particularly delicate environment whose importance
has now been sanctioned by the recent UNESCO decision.
Of course, there are other reasons to visit this area, including the southern part of the province, which borders with Treviso and is bathed
by the waters of the Piave, from Longarone to Quero.
There are three historic town centres in this part, Feltre, Mel and Belluno: three undoubtedly different places, but each one equally able
to evoke strong sensations in the visitor. These are more than just tourist attractions; they are places where the present meets the past,
places which look towards the future, as a result of the quality experience they have to offer not only to those who live there, but also to
visitors, or those merely passing through.
The autumn can be one of the best times to visit these towns, perhaps to pop in to one of the Dolomiti d’Autunno events, or on the way
back from a walk through the woods, or while you take a rest during a cycling trip…. as you eagerly await a nice heavy fall of snow.
Dolomiti Belluno “for me” magazine is three this year: come and celebrate with us!
Dolomiti, spettacolo potente e straordinario
The Dolomites: an extraordinarily powerful spectacle
sfogliando vi offre innumerevoli occasioni e indicazioni sulle molteplici
Matteo Toscani
Assessore al Turismo della Provincia di Belluno
Councillor for Tourism Province of Belluno
On 26th June 2009, the Dolomites officially joined the UNESCO World
Heritage list. Four of the nine mountain groups judged to be “world
heritage sites” lie in the province of Belluno. This decision on the part
of UNESCO affords renewed prestige to the Dolomites, giving the
large numbers of tourists who love the mountains an extra reason to
explore them. Quoting the Belluno-born writer Dino Buzzati, we would
like to invite visitors to come here and take a closer look at “this
spectacle that is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful, powerful and
extraordinary sights our planet has to offer”. We sincerely hope you
will make the very most of the chance not only to enjoy the beautiful
landscape, but to find out more about our history, our traditions,
our products and the proud people that live here, who will certainly
be happy to help you to discover just how much it has to offer. The
magazine you are reading will give you a wealth of information on the
wide range of cultural, art and nature events and opportunities the
area has to offer visitors once again this year, in order to help you
enjoy your holidays in the province of Belluno to the full.
Le Dolomiti, patrimonio
dell’umanità da tutelare
The Dolomites,
a World Heritage Site
Vette maestose
Sinora in Italia
Valentina Nicolao
On 26th June this year, UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific
and Cultural Organization) added the Dolomites to the list of World
Heritage Sites, after the twenty-one members of the commission voted
unanimously in favour of affording special recognition to the particular,
unique nature of these mountains. Majestic peaks such as the Marmolada
(3342 m), Tre Cime di Lavaredo (2999 m), Averau (2649 m), Sciliar
(2563 m), Pale di San Martino (3192 m) and Monte Pelmo (3.169 m) – to
mention but a few – are now officially among the most beautiful mountains
on Earth, forming an area measuring 142,000 hectares, to which must
be added a buffer area of a further 85,000 hectares, stretching across
five provinces. Among these, Belluno led the project to gain World
Heritage status, because it is within this province that most of the
Dolomites lie. Before June, the splendid Aeolian Islands off the coast
of Sicily had been the only Italian natural heritage site deemed worthy of
such recognition on the part of UNESCO. From a scientific point of view,
as far back as the 18th century the Dolomites were already a popular
research site among the finest international geologists, mineralogists and
geography experts of the time, attracted here by the fascinating variety of
colours of its rock layers and the countless number of fossils of prehistoric
creatures. It was these scientists who discovered the particular, unique
features of the rock’s make-up, and who went on to study how it came to
form, and in 1791 Déodat de Dolomieu defined for the first time the rock’s
mineralogical and chemical composition, hence the name “dolomite“. The
geographical name “Dolomites” first took hold in 1863, when J. Ball, in his
“Guide to the Eastern Alps”, included a map of the “Dolomites Alps”; from
then on, the name was adopted internationally to refer to the mountains.
Towards the end of the 19th century, numerous mountaineering
pioneers frequented the Dolomites, judging them to be a superb area for
experiments of various kinds. English noblemen were the first to rise to
the challenge of conquering these forbidding peaks; they were followed
by climbers from the Habsburg Empire, whose endeavours formed the
most important chapters in the mountaineering history of the Dolomites.
Magnificent rock walls, towers, overhangs and ridges; a variety of shapes
and colours that have charmed not only the greatest of mountaineers: Le
Corbusier (1887 – 1965), perhaps the finest architect of the 20th century,
saw the Dolomites as “the most beautiful constructions in the world”.
The five provinces that presented and supported the candidature of the
Dolomites now have the task of creating a Foundation, the aim of
which will be to contribute to the conservative, lasting development of this
marvel of nature.
Teenager
delle catene
montuose
molluschi, alghe, coralli e spugne; poi vennero
tornare, sotto nuova forma, a testimonianza
divenne emerso. In seguito, lo spostamento
delle varie zolle terrestri, innalzò le catene
montuose; le arenarie, i calcari e le lave,
ormai consolidate e compattate dall’enorme
pressione praticata dagli strati geologici
superiori, iniziarono ad essere erose. Durante
provetto e fantasioso. Frane e detriti fluivano
verso valle, mentre pioggia e gelo continuavano
delle Dolomiti dà poi luogo all’affascinante fenomeno
V. N.
A “teenage”
mountain
chain
Around 250 million years ago – a very short
time by geological standards – the area that
is now the Alps was part of the supercontinent
Pangaea, within the tropical strip of the earth.
This warm sea saw the formation of coral reefs,
as we know today from the wealth of fossils
of molluscs, algae, corals and sponges; then
volcanoes formed and the coral reefs were
buried, only to return once more later in a new
guise, demonstrating an extraordinary ability
to adapt and survive. Tectonic action led to a
rise in the level of the seabed, the primordial
sea withdrew and the ancient seabed rose to
the surface. This was followed by shifts in the
various terrestrial plates and the rise of the
mountain chains; the sandstone, limestone and
lava, which by that time had been consolidated
and compacted by the enormous amount of
pressure exercised by the geological layers
on top of them, began to erode. During the
last ice ages, the Dolomites continued to
take shape, with water proving to be a skilled,
imaginative sculptor. Landslides and detritus
flowed down towards the valley, while rain and
ice continued their work relentlessly, to such an
extent that they changed forever the face of
these mountains, which are an authentic
treasure trove for geologists and fossil
seekers from all over the world.
The particular mineralogical make-up
of the Dolomites is also what gives rise
to the beguiling phenomenon known as
“enrosadira”: at sunset, as a result of the
presence of calcium carbonate and magnesium
in the dolomite rock, the mountains are lit up
by a deep red colour; the rock faces become
tinged with a spectrum of colours that shifts
from pale yellow to fiery red and on through the
various darkening shades of violet, before being
engulfed by the pitch-black of the night sky. This
alluring natural spectacle really is an experience
not to be missed.
SPECIALE CENTRI STORICI - Belluno
La storia in un caffè
History in a cup of coffee
di Belluno”. La storia del Deon è invece più recente;
Primi Ministri, scrittori e pittori, giornalisti e critici
Borghi antichi e
mestieri d’un tempo
Ancient
neighbourhoods
and traditional trades
Interesse: storico, paesaggistico, naturalistico
Fisterre.
From Belluno town centre you can embark upon
a pleasant walking route through the
ancient neighbourhoods of the town
and the signs of the traditional trades
that life in them once revolved around. The
route starts out right in the centre of Belluno,
from Piazza Duomo: leaving behind on your
right the striking Baroque bell tower of the
Michele Buoso
As you take a leisurely walk beneath the porticoes of Piazza dei Martiri
and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, you will come upon a number of café
bars that are part of the town’s very history, where you can take a
seat and relax as you watch locals and visitors stroll along the “liston”, as
the walkway of the main square is known. The oldest of these cafés
dates back to the 18th century, to a time of radical changes in the
layout of Belluno, which was beginning to spread out beyond the city walls
towards the new centre which was to be based around what is now Piazza
dei Martiri. Among those intuitive enough to appreciate the implications of
these developments was Osvaldo Casot, who moved his coffee shop to
the square, creating the original nucleus of what was to become today’s
Caffè Manin, which during the 19th century grew in importance to such an
extent that it was known as “the Pedrocchi of Belluno”, a reference to the
prestigious, world-renowned café bar in Padua. The history of the Caffè
Deon is more recent: first opened in 1870 as a top-of-the-range, national
prize-winning cake shop, it was run until after the Second World War by
the family of the business’s founder, who extended the premises and
turned the cake shop into a proper café bar. Italian presidents and prime
ministers, writers and artists, journalists and literary critics have all enjoyed
a coffee in the Deon and the Manin, affording both a well-deserved place in
the Mittel-European tradition of café bars as a haunt of intellectuals and the
bourgeoisie. The Caffè Commercio, beneath the portico of Palazzo Miari
Fulcis de Bertoldi, is another example: thanks to its location opposite the
theatre, it was traditionally frequented by upper middle class theatregoers,
and, just like the Manin, was often the setting for heated political debates.
Of the historical cafés in Belluno, the Commercio is the one that has
changed least since its heyday: the long counter, the mirrors on the walls
and the rooms behind the bar, once reserved for officials, recall to mind
the splendour and opulence of the belle époque and of a time when Belluno
was characterised by a lively social scene decidedly unexpected for a
small provincial town. For connoisseurs of espresso, highly recommended
comes the Caffetteria Bristot, a firm favourite with the locals. Founded by
Domenico Bristot in 1919, it was one of the first coffee shops in Italy to
roast its coffees in the same place they can be enjoyed by customers.
flight of steps on the right down to Borgo Piave, where the river port of San
Nicola was once to be found, through which the zattieri, or raftsmen, had to
pass as they transported the timber felled in the surrounding woods down
the Piave towards the plain. At the bottom of the steps of Via Fossal you can
spot what remains today of the old Colle tanneries. From here, we suggest
continuing along the dirt-track route that runs alongside the Ardo Torrent to
the Ponte dell’Anta bridge; cross the bridge and turn left into Piazzetta S.
Lucano, the heart of the ancient Borgo Prà neighbourhood, at the end of
which, near a small bridge over the Ardo, you will find the steps that lead to
the path running to the former Hydroelectrical Plant. The torrent has always
played an important role in the town’s economy, with its waters supplying
the mills that provided the energy to run dozens of factories and works as
far back as the days of the Serenissima Republic. Some of these forged
swords that were among the most sought-after in Europe, while in others
wheat and barley were milled and wool was fulled. Timber from the
woods was processed in the “Venetian-style” sawmills, leather
was tanned, and of course, electrical energy was produced.
Difficulty level: easy
Time required: approx. 3 hours there and back
Interesting because of the history, nature and landscape.
N.B. the route over the Ardo from Borgo Prà has been temporarily interrupted
as a result of the work in progress on the Ponte degli Alpini bridge
that runs over it before you come to the old fishmarkets at Fisterre.
Sette giorni d’arte
Seven days of art
in streets of the town
Once again this year, from 1st to 8th November, Belluno will be
playing host to the Ex Tempore Wooden Sculpture Competition,
part of the celebrations the town dedicates to its patron saint, San
Martino. Right from ancient times, wood has been readily available
in the Belluno Dolomites, and the craft industry connected to this
particular raw material boasts a long, flourishing, prestigious
history. A sublime example of this is the work of the sculptor Andrea
Brustolon, described by Balzac as “the Michelangelo of wood” and
to whom the city dedicated an exhibition last year that was a huge
success with both the public and the critics. Works by the great
Baroque artist are conserved in various places in the surrounding
area, and the Province has mapped out a number of routes of great
historical and cultural interest for visitors to follow. This tradition is
still very much alive today in the
area, and Belluno is home to a
considerable number of woodcraft
workshops. The Ex Tempore
Competition attracts many wood
sculptors from throughout Italy
and beyond, and for a whole week
the streets of the historic centre
come alive with artists carving
their sculptures before the eyes
of locals and visitors, offering
onlookers the chance to see just
how a wood sculpture takes shape
and springs to life.
The unmistakable fragrance of
this noble material will accompany
visitors from one workstation to the
next in order to choose and vote
for their personal favourite, and
the prizes will be awarded during
the weekend, when the completed
works will be displayed.
Mel, tra storia e sapori
All the history
and flavour of Mel
dalle caratteristiche tombe a cassetta disposte in affascinanti
gioielli, vasellame, elementi ornamentali.
Nestling atop a rise in the heart of the Valbelluna, the little town of Mel
offers the visitor a host of pleasant little surprises. As you revel in the
delicious scent of freshly baked bread, take a walk along “la Stretta”
towards Piazza Papa Luciani, the main square right in the attractive
historic centre of the town, named after John Paul I, affectionately
remembered as the “Smiling Pope”.
Mel, awarded “Orange Flag” status by the Italian Touring Club, boasts
an especially noteworthy artistic and historical heritage. The different
architectural styles of the various noble buildings that surround the square
blend perfectly with each other, creating an attractive overall effect.
In addition to the fourteenth-century Barbuio-Gaio residence and the
sixteenth-century Town Hall building, visitors can admire the ancient
Church of the Addolorata and the more recent Parish Church, a
magnificent seventeenth-century construction that stands out strikingly
against the rest of the elegant town centre. As you explore the streets
of Mel, we suggest you raise your eyes upwards to admire the graceful,
original chimney pots of Palazzo delle Contesse, or take a walk along
routes steeped in history, such as the “Karéra”, which runs along a Nordic
Walking trail and offers marvellous views of the surrounding landscape.
History lovers should not miss a visit to the Early Venetian necropolis,
featuring characteristic box-shaped tombs arranged into fascinating stone
circles; in the Archaeological Museum you can see a range of objects
found at the necropolis, including jewellery, pottery and ornamental
elements. Children – and curious adults – may also like to visit the
“giazéra”, which once served as a “freezer” for the noble Fulcis family
near the town centre.
Mel never misses out on a chance to show off the multitude of aspects
that make up the town: sporty and ready to go with the Prealpi Bike
Run Marathon in August, an event that brings together MTB racing and
running; colourful and light-hearted in September during the parade of the
Allegorical Floats that present a series of theatre performances by various
local groups; great fun in the month of October, during “Mele a Mel”, the
popular festival that fills the narrow little streets of the town centre and the
courtyards of the historical buildings with the heady fragrance of delicious
apples, focaccia, barley soup and a range of other local delicacies.
History, art, nature and sport: there’s something for everyone in Mel. Come
and find out for yourselves.
Castello di
Zumelle, tuffo
nel Medioevo
Percorrendo la strada provinciale che da Mel
conduce a Feltre, all’altezza del ponte sul
torrente Terche, volgete lo sguardo a sinistra
verso le colline: seminascosta tra i boschi
vi sorprenderà la sagoma di un maniero
medievale. È Zumelle, luogo nel quale
l’affascinante storia dell’antico contado di Mel
si fa particolarmente intensa e vibrante. Posto
Zumelle Castle,
a trip back into
the Middle Ages
On the way along the provincial road that runs from
Mel to Feltre, when you reach the bridge over the
Terche Torrent, take a look to your left towards the
hills, and you will find a pleasant surprise partially
hidden away among the surrounding woodland:
the outline of the mediaeval Zumelle castle. It
is here that the fascinating history of the ancient
county of Mel really comes excitingly alive. Set
atop a hill looking straight down over the Terche
below, the castle can be reached by going
up an enchanting little road, and is surrounded
by a deep moat. Way back in Roman times, a
watchtower stood on the site, along the route of
what may have been the Claudia Augusta military
road. The dark days of the Barbarian invasions here
are shrouded in mystery, but legend has it that in
526 A.D. the Goth Genseric took refuge here with
his lover, and that the couple were blessed with
twins; so the story goes, it was this happy event
that gave the castle its name: Castrum Zumellarum,
i.e. the “castle of the twins”. Zumelle, the best
conserved fortress in the province of Belluno, has
since had an eventful history, and within its walls the
visitor can almost hear the clashing of swords and
imagine the bustling everyday life of the courtiers
who once lived here in luxury. The history of the
castle comes alive throughout the day and well into
the evening, thanks to a spellbinding lighting
system, with guided visits, special events and the
chance to sample some traditional fare from days
gone by in the restaurant.
Feltre, un viaggio
nel Rinascimento
Feltre, a trip back
into the Renaissance
all’interno delle mura.
The historic centre of Feltre sits atop a hill, protected by crags on
all sides except the west, where a road starts out from the Porta
Imperiale gate and runs up Via Mezzaterra.
You can reach the historic centre from the south east: walk up
from the train station, and when you come to the city walls, turn
right along the street where the weekly market takes place. Leave
behind the archaeological area on your right, in front of the slope
named after Vittore da Cesana –“a statesman and theologist” a
sign tells us – and you will find an opening, Porta Pusterla, which
takes you inside the city walls. On the right, a broad stairway in
Istria stone winds its way up, with cobbled paving at the side
with a channel to drain away water. There are about fifty steps,
interspersed with landings featuring little shrines set into the rock.
As you walk up, on the right is the rock face, on the left a large
open space that lets in plenty of light: according to the season,
the fragrance of dry grass from the small allotments alternates
with the mould that forms on the steps not exposed to the
sunlight.
The stairway is called “Salita Vittore Dal Pozzo, soldier m. 1530”,
as you can read when you come to the top, where the steps meet
the street named after Gerolamo Lusa, jurist, 1528. To the left
you can see Palazzo della Ragione, where, from 1729 to 1730,
Carlo Goldoni was employed as “a young law clerk”, as we learn
from the plaque on the side of the building. Also on the left is the
sixteenth-century Palazzo Pretorio, now the headquarters of the
municipal council, with its magnificent Sala degli Stemmi and Sala
Giunta rooms, as well as the Teatro de La Sena.
Here the Renaissance atmosphere takes shape in the square
variously known as Piazza Maggiore, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele or
Karl Platz, in honour of Charles I of Habsburg. It is all these names
and their history that make up the heart of Feltre.
autunno ricco
L’autore
americano cui sarà dedicato quest’anno il
consueto workshop è il grande sassofonista
Wayne Shorter. Inoltre, sempre a Palazzo
altre manifestazioni: come Voilà, l’ormai
tradizionale Festival Internazionale di Arte
di Strada il 5 settembre, mostre di pittura,
come quella di Lalla Morassuti “Magiche Rocce”
a Palazzo Guarnieri dal 5 al 20 settembre;
Sport in Piazza il 26 e 27 settembre; la
programme of
autumn events
In addition to the long-awaited opening of
two new exhibition rooms devoted to 20th
scheduled for 26th and 27th September.
What’s new about the 2009 edition is that
the courses will be entirely given over to
ensemble music, with three different levels,
from basic to advanced. Palazzo Guarnieri,
in the splendid Piazza Maggiore, will also
be the setting once again this year for the
12th season of the Unisono Jazz Club, which
will run from the second Friday in October
through to May 2010 (www.unisonojazz.
particular attention to new, up-and-coming
groups. There will also be evenings not
strictly limited to jazz, with theatre-music
projects, reading and music evenings and
cabaret shows.
Autumn in Feltre will also be enlivened by a
whole host of other events, such as Voilà,
the International Street Art Festival that
CULTURA E MEMORIA
Longarone Vajont, attimi di Storia © F. Ciprian
Longarone Vajont
fatidico 9 ottobre 1963. Ogni visitatore può
ripercorrere attraverso immagini, documenti,
storia”, vuole sottolineare esplicitamente i
ricostruito. Il museo è visitabile da lunedì
al venerdì dalle 10 alle 12.30 e dalle 15.30
alle 18; sabato, domenica e festivi dalle 10
alle 12.30 e dalle 14 alle 18. L’Associazione
propone inoltre visite guidate agli altri
The Cultural Centre in Longarone has
recently seen the inauguration of the
first-ever museum dedicated to the
history of Longarone and the Vajont
tragedy. The visitor route, mapped out
so as to follow the chronological order of
events, runs in an unexpectedly delicate
fashion through the two exhibition halls,
which are connected by a dark tunnel
designed to symbolise the “before” and
“after” of that fateful night of 9th October
1963. A collection of pictures, documents,
footage and exhibits will take the visitor
on a journey through the history of a town
that was struck by the greatest postwar
tragedy in Italy right in the middle
of the boom period of the 1960s. A
display cabinet at the entrance contains a
scale model of the Vajont Dam, which is
interesting in order to appreciate just what
a striking work of engineering the dam
was. The museum is a way of keeping alive
a local history that was scarred forever
by the disaster, and its aim is to awaken
strong emotions in the visitor, as well as
an acute awareness of the fact that the
value of life and the lessons of the past
are indispensable foundations on which
to build the future. The name chosen for
the museum, “LONGARONE VAJONT, a
moment in history” is designed to explicitly
underline the content of the visitor route,
which has no claims to being an exhaustive
examination of the tragedy it tells the
story of: what the museum aims to
offer is a look at the everyday life of
a town that was completely wiped out
and later rebuilt thanks to the tenacity,
determination and faith in the future
demonstrated by its people. The museum
is open to visitors from Monday to Friday,
from 10.00 to 12.30 and from 15.30 to
18.00; on Saturdays, Sundays and public
holidays it is open from 10.00 to 12.30
and from 14.00 to 18.00. Guided visits are
also organised to other Vajont Memorial
Sites: the Dam and its crown, the Church of
Michelucci with the “Pietre Vive” museum,
the Bell Tower of Pirago, an authentic
symbol of the tragedy, and the Monumental
Cemetery of the Victims of the Vajont in the
village of Fortogna.
Domenica 27 settembre 2009, con
partenza alle ore 9.00 dal centro di Longarone,
prenderà il via la quarta edizione
della gara podistica, non competitiva,
sui Luoghi del Vajont: “I percorsi della
memoria”. La pedonata percorrerà alcuni
tratti di strade e sentieri che rappresentano
le antiche vie di collegamento tra la
valle del Piave e La Val Cellina, in parte
A race to
remember, a
sports event
not to forget
Sunday 27th September sees the fourth
edition of the non-competitive run
through the Vajont Memorial Sites:
“Places in our memory”. The race will set
out at 9.00 from the centre of Longarone
and will run along a number of stretches of
roads and paths that represent the ancient
communication routes that once linked
the Piave Valley with the Val Cellina and
which became partially inaccessible when
they were destroyed or interrupted on the
CULTURE AND HISTORY
night of the Vajont Dam disaster, on 9th
October 1963. Runners can choose from
three routes - 10, 17 and 25 kilometres
long respectively – along which they can
discover the likes of the “Ponte Canale”
bridge and the “Strada del Colomber” road.
This journey back into the past is designed
to recall to mind the Vajont tragedy, as
well as the customs and traditions of the
local folk and how they used to live. The
idea behind the run came from the Vajont
Survivors’ Association, and is supported by
the four municipalities that were affected by
the disaster, with the invaluable assistance
of various voluntary organisations that are
active locally. Its aim is to ensure the tragic
events of 9th October 1963 remain fresh in
the memory, and for sport and solidarity to
honour the 1910 people who lost their lives
on that fateful night.
Val di Zoldo e Valboite
Le antiche
miniere di
Val Inferna
quanto onerosi e poco redditizi.
The Val Inferna
mines
Autumn, when the woodlands spring alive with an array of dazzling colours,
is probably the best time for a visit to the Val Inferna mines. The route we
suggest here is a simple, easy to follow one, offering all the attractions
of an unspoilt natural landscape coupled with the thrill of discovering
traces of the area’s long-distant past, during which the mines supplied
galena (argentiferous lead) and blende. The first documentary reference
to this mining activity dates back to 1368, when Cristoforo Vecellio from
the Cadore area was granted permission from the Patriarch of Aquileia to
exploit the mineral deposits there, and the minerals were
14
NATURE
extracted, albeit not continuously, until 1880, when the activity
ceased for good because it was unduly arduous and insufficiently
profitable.
The mines are located between the Val Boite and the Val di Zoldo,
at an altitude ranging from 1490 to 1550 m. a.s.l., and they can
easily be reached from two different points. From the south, the first
access point is at “Pian de la Palanca”, two kilometres north of the
village of Fornesighe at a large bend on the right of the provincial
road number 347: from here, the mining site is about an hour’s
walk, passing through the abandoned village of Arsiera on the way.
The second access point is from “le Fratte”, after the hamlet of
Cornigian at a bend on the right, and from here it will take you about
45 minutes to get to the mines. Once you reach the site, the visitor
route begins, which includes a testing gallery of over 50 metres
long, near which you can see a few low walls and ruins of what were
once the miners’ houses. A bit of a climb is required to see the most
striking of the cavities, such as the “stol de la neef”, which bears the
inscription 1559; a little further up you will find the “Camino”, a deep
opening of interest to speleologists.
Ciesamata
Let’s take a walk
up to Ciesamata
Ciesamata.
state risistemate prima
dalla locale Sezione dei
Cacciatori e poi dal Soccorso
Alpino di Alleghe
che dallo scorso anno
le ha adibite a bivacco
(sempre aperto per emergenza).
Ciesamata è un
posto tranquillo, dove
si incontra poca gente,
dove si sale per il piacere
di trovare silenzio, dove
la fatica ti fa apprezzare
Alleghe
To go up to Ciesamata, set out from Masarè di Alleghe and follow
the CAI path no. 563; you will soon come to a point where you can
see the Ru de Rialt waterfall. Turn right here onto a little bridge that
crosses the stream and leads into beech woods; continue slightly
upwards until you come to a table with the indications on how to
reach the Tissi Refuge. From here on, the path, always clearly
marked, climbs continually upwards, so you may be a little out of
breath by the time you reach the Casera Ciesamata. The grassland
around this old mountain hut was used as a summer pasture until
the end of the 1950s, after which it was renovated by the Alpine
Rescue Station of Alleghe, which uses it every summer, on the
second Sunday of August, for the traditional “Mountain Festival”.
The old cattle sheds were repaired first by the local hunting
group and then by the Alpine Rescue Station of Alleghe, which uses
them as a bivouac (always open for emergencies). Ciesamata is a
quiet spot, where you will find few people and plenty of silence; the
tiring route up to it is amply rewarded by the cool, fresh water of the
little “festil” (fountain) at the side of the Casera – not to mention the
sense of great personal satisfaction at having made it!
Protagonisti
quattro zampe.
fa e ampezzani e turisti, accorsi numerosi
accompagnando cani, gatti, tartarughe,
God bless our
four-legged
friends
Once again this year, visitors to Cortina
d’Ampezzo will be able to witness an unusual
ceremony that has now become part of our
local traditions and stars our four-legged
friends: on 2nd October, at 4 p.m., at the
school, the faithful will gather at the foot of the
statue erected by the local people to San Pio
to attend a religious ceremony during which
their pets will receive a special blessing.
Father Leone and the monks from the
convent of the Franciscan order first
celebrated this rite five years ago, and since
then numerous locals and visitors have
been coming here accompanied by their
dogs, cats, tortoises, ferrets, parrots,
etc., delighted at the chance to take part in
this ceremony that the monks were the first
to bring to the valley. This simple religious
function is a moment of deep spirituality and
communion in which, for once, it is animals
that play a leading role, demonstrating that
although many are often ill-treated, many
more are - fortunately - very well loved.
Yellow, green, brown and a shade or two of orange. Intense
From the beguiling snowy-white waters of the falls leads a path
an ancient hamlet with a few houses and the odd traditional
Alla ricerca di funghi
Mushroom picking
Quante volte in montagna, specialmente nelle giornate autunnali,
gustarli, ovviamente insieme all’immancabile polenta.
“I’d just love a plate of polenta and mushrooms today”. How often
have we heard those words in the mountains, especially in the
autumn? Polenta and mushrooms are among the most characteristic
elements of our local cuisine, “humble” foods that everyone, even
in the hardest of times, could afford to serve up; traditional dishes
whose delicious flavour is the object of culinary rediscovery. The
route we suggest here is a simple one, which does not require
any particular knowledge of the area, and will allow you to seek out
mushrooms for yourself and enjoy them freshly picked. Start
out from Tambre and head towards “Micei Vecio”, then on to “Teno”.
Along the way you will venture into thick woodland, the ideal place
to find mushrooms, especially the chiodini variety, which grow at the
foot of hornbeam, hazel and fir trees. At the other side of the wood
you will come out onto a quiet, relaxing, sunny expanse of grassland,
with fruit trees scattered around it and sheep grazing. Take the dirt
track that runs towards “Moretti”, and from there to the “Malolt” hill;
from here, a brief stretch of tarmac road will take you to the “Coleta”
fork. Turn left, and after about 1 km you will reach
your destination, where you can enjoy superb
views from the headland that separates
two rather deep, uneven valleys: the
Valturcana (so-called because the
Turks arrived here in the 16th
century) and the Rispen-
Borsoi. Time required:
about two and a half
hours. N.B.: If you are
unsure as to whether
the mushrooms you
have picked are edible,
have them examined
before eating them –
together with as slice
of polenta, of course.
San Vito di Cadore
natura
percorso, in alcuni punti piuttosto ripido,
è comunque attrezzato con panchine e
punti pic-nic che consentono brevi pause
e permettono di godere del magnifico
paesaggio circostante. In circa quaranta
minuti di cammino si giunge ad una
simpatica breve scalinata, realizzata con
tronchi d’albero. La meta è ormai quasi
raggiunta. Il rumore dell’acqua ci guida
con sicurezza alla cascata. D’improvviso
si presenta uno spettacolo suggestivo:
un fragoroso salto d’acqua alto alcune
decine di metri. La ricca vegetazione
del luogo, con i suoi colori autunnali,
regala all’escursionista ulteriori intense
emozioni. Il tempo complessivo di
percorrenza è di circa quarantacinque
minuti dal ponte.
The thrill
of rushing
water
From Borca di Cadore, go down towards the
little village of Villanova. When you come to
the Parish Church, walk past it to the right
and after a brief slope, cross a bridge over
the Boite Torrent. From here, there are signs
to indicate the route, which goes up along a
path that runs through fir, larch and beech
trees. Some points of the route are fairly steep,
but you will find benches and picnic areas
along the way that are ideal to enjoy a brief
rest and admire the magnificent surrounding
landscape. About forty minutes’ walk will take
you to a pleasant little flight of steps formed
by tree trunks, and by this time you’ll almost
have reached your destination: just follow
the noise of the water, and you will soon be
dazzled by a spectacular waterfall that
cascades down tens of metres before
your eyes. The striking autumn hues of
the rich surrounding vegetation is a perfect
complement to the white of the rushing
water, creating a spectacular effect that is
sure to remain with the visitor for a long time.
The route takes about 45 minutes in all from
the bridge.
Panorami d ’autunno in
Val Comelico
Partenza in località Costa, m 1330,
Autumn views in the
Val Comelico
The nature walk we suggest here runs through a particularly attractive
landscape, offering superb views. It starts out from Costa, 1330 m,
and moves on along the panoramic road from which you can admire
the whole of the Val Parola and the splendid autumn colours of the
woods. The first stretch will take you to Costalissoio, 1249 m, the
“Costa del Sole”, where you can visit the little Church of the Beata
Vergine delle Grazie, inside which are a number of interesting paintings,
and the Regianini Surrealist Art Museum. From here, the route moves
along the same panoramic road, which now overlooks the Piave Valley,
on towards Costalta. Along the way, you should not fail to stop at
Piazzolette, where – and the setting is certainly no coincidence – you
can see a large stone plaque, engraved on which are the first words of
Karol Wojtyla as Pope on the theme of nature and the need to defend
it, pronounced in Santo Stefano di Cadore. The walk continues amid
fir trees and meadows until it reaches Costalta, 1303 m, the village
with the “wooden statues in front of the wooden houses in the wooden
village”, in which you can also visit the “Ceda di Sai” Museum.
niente folle spropositate, giornate limpide e temperature ottimali.
area picnic.
To the Sass
Fountain
Autumn is one of the best times of year for a trip
to the mountains: no huge crowds, cloudless
skies and perfect temperatures.
One option you really shouldn’t fail to give a try is
the peaceful, tranquil walk that leads to the Sass
Fountain in Tai di Cadore, which takes its name
from the original source of the water from among the “sassi”, or stones.
Set off from Piazzale Dolomiti in Tai and head towards Monte Zucco; the
woodland paths will take you to the fountain, where you will also find a
pleasant picnic area.
The walk takes about 40 minutes; those who feel like continuing
can walk on towards the nineteenth-century fortification of
Col Vaccher, while if you continue left for a further 90 minutes or so
you can reach the peak of Monte Zucco, from which there are truly
splendid views.
Falcade
Cows dressed up and ready
to return from the mountains
From the 17th to the 20th of September, the Gruppo Folk-Union
Ladina Val Biois will be organising “Se desmonteghea”, a reenactment
of the deep-rooted local tradition of celebrating the
return of the herds down to the valley from the mountain pastures
where they spend the summer months. During this event, cows and
calves play a starring role, and are dressed up with crowns of flowers
on their heads and the classic cattle bell around their necks. In the
Biois Valley, which lies on the border between the provinces of Belluno
and Trento, 11 mountain huts and 3 mountain pastures are involved.
This joyful, engaging event, popular with both locals and visitors,
helps to recall the importance of these animals for the mountain folk.
A marquee will be set up in Falcade, which will host evening dances,
award ceremonies and offer the chance to sample typical local
dishes. On the last day of the event, the Folk Groups will also perform
traditional dances that recall the ancient traditions of the alpine valleys.
Percorso vita nei colori del bosco
A keep-fit trail through the autumn woods
Nel centro di Arabba, alla sinistra della
stazione di partenza della funivia, inizia una
piacevole passeggiata che, con un dolce
saliscendi, si snoda attraverso il bosco
alle pendici di Portavescovo. Si tratta di un
percorso vita in quindici tappe con diversi
attrezzi ginnici realizzati in legno.
eseguire. Gli sportivi più allenati potranno
svolgere il percorso di corsa, in un
tempo che si aggira intorno ai 45 minuti;
chi non è sufficientemente allenato o,
semplicemente, ama i ritmi più lenti potrà
godersi la passeggiata in tutta tranquillità
ammirando il paesaggio circostante in
compagnia dei suoni e dei profumi che
solo il bosco sa regalare. Lungo il sentiero,
attraverso gli alberi, in più occasioni
sarà possibile scorgere dall’alto l’abitato
di Arabba.
A pleasant walking route starts out
from the left of the cableway departure
station in Arabba and runs gently up and
down through the woods on the slopes of
Portavescovo. This fifteen-stage keep-fit trail
features a range of gym equipment in wood,
all parts of which are easy to find thanks to
the signs marked with yellow or blue stickers,
depending on their position along the route,
and beside each one is a brief explanation of
the type of exercise they are designed to be
used for. The fittest among
you can race through the
course in about 45 minutes; if
you’re not quite in such good
shape, or simply prefer to
take things a little easier, you
the surrounding landscape,
accompanied by the sounds
Enduro-oriented, freni buoni e nervi saldi!
maggior spazio e interpretazione. Il cronometraggio professionale ha completato il
quadro tecnico del percorso.
Enduro-oriented: good
brakes and nerves of steel
required!
The Enduro-oriented is a downhill time trial in the spectacular setting of the Val D’Oten,
one of the wildest and most alluring places in the Dolomites. The competition
takes place on an expanse of scree that has already been the setting for a number of
important off-road events, and consists of a fast, downhill time trial that runs through
fords, woodlands and a lot of gravel. The route presents a level difference of 550 m,
over a total length of 7.5 km, so the slopes are never extreme, and require a sensible
use of the brakes rather than any particular skill. During the last edition, a number
of new features were introduced to the route: continuity was given to the descent at
Diassa, keeping the route on the right bank of the torrent, while the brief climb at the
little Biguzzere Lake was lengthened in favour of a greater slope on the final descent.
Thirty Super-G gates have been placed along the upper part of the scree, replacing the
kilometric tape, in order to give greater space and room for manoeuvre. Professional
timing completes the technical aspects of the route.
Lungo
with a bit of luck, even witness the birth of
a little calf, which was the exciting highlight
of last year’s edition of the fair. There will
also be a range of farming and forestry
machinery and equipment on display. At
lunchtime, traditional local dishes will
be on offer for all, accompanied by
some good music. Throughout the day,
visitors will have the opportunity to take
a fascinating trip through the streets of
Agordo in a horse-drawn carriage, learn the
secrets of woodcraft or sample the delicious
apple fritters fried fresh on the spot on the
Broi by the skilful hands of a group of ladies
from Rif, just outside Agordo. In the bars in
the town centre, you can enjoy “formai e
by a glass of fine wine. This fascinating day
out is a faithful reflection of the deep-rooted
farming traditions of the Agordo area.
NATURE
Sarà come
Tania Ernesti
The bell of the stag
Let’s get a few things straight before we start: the ski lifts – which
generally allow for a few short-cuts on hiking trips – are closed,
as are the mountain refuges, while restaurants, bars and shops
are either only open for part of the day or are on holiday. But all
this is part and parcel of the magic of an autumn holiday here in
the mountains, which offers peace and quiet and a slower pace
of life, ideal for regenerating both body and mind. Take a pleasant
walk, rather than a challenging hike; make frequent stops to
breath in the fresh mountain air and admire the colours of the
landscape: this is the secret. There are plenty of opportunities to
go walking in the Val di Zoldo during this season, but the one we
suggest here is particularly fascinating, offering as it does the
chance to hear the bell of a stag on heat. This dark sound that
rends the night sky can only be heard by those who have moved
out a little beyond the village and immerged themselves 100%
in the surrounding nature. It is a little like being caught up in a
wildlife documentary, as you experience the thrill of observing the
behaviour of these magnificent animals up close. The stag, once
he has brought a group of deer under his control, bells loudly to
express his position, his rank within the herd, and the result is a
concert of sounds that ring out from one end of the woods
to the other, taking on a particular, wild allure as night falls.
Guaranteed to send shivers down your spine.
Autunno da gustare con “Vecchio Merlo”
All the taste of autumn with “Vecchio Merlo”
ristoranti e dagli hotel aderenti.
Alcuni nomi: Presst
Kneile; brodo orbo;
gnocchi d’ortica; casunzi
dpatati; pizza con zigar;
mes; smorm; crestl. Il
Tour ha un importante
abbinamento: incontro
conviviale gioioso con
illustrazione delle caratteristiche
storico culturali,
curiosità del paese in cui
opera il ristorante.
Guido Buzzo
The idea of this tour is to explore the splendid Comelico from
a different angle: through the area’s food and cuisine. This voyage
of discover runs from January to December, not just in the two
main tourist seasons, and features a vast array of typical dishes
deeply rooted in the local history, given a bold, contemporary
makeover and prepared in the restaurants and hotels taking
part using modern cooking techniques. The first of the events
in this “Vecchio Merlo” series was held in Candide, in the Tobolo
restaurant, which first opened its doors 126 years ago, and is
particularly well known for the rare Ladin speciality, “pastin di
capriolo” (a kind of sausagemeat made from roe deer), with which
it won the “Fogher d’oro delle Tre Venezie” culinary award in 1980.
Visitors to Comelico will have the opportunity to taste a wide range
of special dishes, so beautifully presented by the local chefs that
they seem authentic works of art, with such a mouth-watering
flourish and such inviting colours. Just some of the delicious
specialities featured are: “Presst Kneile”; “brodo orbo”; “gnocchi
d’ortica”; “casunzi dpatati”; “pizza con zigar”; “mes”; “smorm” and
“crestl”. The “Vecchio Merlo” Tour offers more, however, than just
food, presenting the local delicacies during a pleasant, convivial
encounter that takes a look at the historical and cultural features of
the village in which the restaurant concerned operates.
pastin, Pom Prussian, Noce Feltrina, Agnello dell’Alpago e miele.
A collection of flavours
Autumn sees the return of the highly successful Dolomiti d’Autunno, a gourmet tour that brings together all the most important food
and wine events and festivals in the province of Belluno. A prestigious newcomer to this fourth edition is the Cheese and Flavours Route of
the Belluno Dolomites, an important project designed to enhance and draw attention to the food and agricultural products of the Belluno area and
how they are used in local restaurants. The growing popularity of Dolomiti d’Autunno is proof of the renewed interest more and more visitors and
locals are showing towards traditional mountain produce and the culinary specialities these home-grown delicacies are used by local restaurateurs
to create. This tasty series began with the Cesiomaggiore Provincial Potato Festival, which took place on 22nd and 23rd August, and will continue
through the season until 27th November, with the Honey Festival, so you can spend the whole of the autumn visiting events where you can sample
the finest of our typical flavours. Dolomiti d’Autunno is a trip through genuine, yet sophisticated mountain cuisine, discovering the mouthwatering
flavours and traditions that form part of it, as well as the chance to admire some outstanding typical local craftwork, visit colourful stands
and enjoy some superb entertainment. Once again this year the most assiduous visitors will be rewarded with the fun “Gioco del Gusto” initiative.
To take part, just pick up one of the Dolomiti d’Autunno leaflets, which you can find at all the events in the series and which provides detailed
descriptions of the various fairs and festivals; in the central pages you will find a card with fourteen squares.
Each of these squares corresponds to one of the events selected from the total of 25 scheduled, with the 14 chosen being especially closely linked
to the food and farming traditions of Belluno: Cesiomaggiore Potatoes (which boast a “local denomination of origin” quality trademark), maize,
ciodèt mushrooms, Lamon Beans (PGI), grapes, Cheeses of the Belluno Dolomites, Belluno “Holy” Pumpkin, apples, Morone chestnuts from Feltre,
pastin, Pom Prussian apples, Feltre Walnuts, Alpago Lamb and honey. Visitors who visit five of the events and have their card stamped as proof of
participation will receive a basket of typical Belluno produce. Tourists from outside of the province will also be offered the opportunity to take part in
the 2010 edition of Dolomiti in Festa, with a guided visit to the various stands and the chance to sample typical local dishes.
Progetto REGIO.IAT
vacanza e, perché no, pensare già alla prossima.
Belluno,
Padova, Rovigo, Treviso, Venezia, Verona e Vicenza forniranno, presso
i propri uffici informazione, materiale informativo e suggerimenti sull’intero
Veneto.
REGIO.IAT Project
The seven provinces that make up the Veneto region are working together
on a project to network the tourist information and assistance offices in
order to supply information on the whole of the region, with the aim of
helping visitors enjoy their holiday and perhaps even plan their next break.
The Veneto Region is acting as coordinator for this important,
challengeing project, which will involve the tourist offices of the seven
provinces of Belluno, Padua, Rovigo, Treviso, Venice and Verona, where
visitors will be able to find information material and suggestions regarding
the whole of the region. The project will include training courses, visits
to the area and opportunties for operators throughout the Veneto to
exchange ideas in order to find out more – and therefore provide better
information, news and tips to visitors – on this splendid area that stretches
out from the Dolomites down to the coast.
grattugiato; un pizzico di sale; farina bianca;
dieci minuti.
consistente e potrete lavorarlo
sulla spianatoia precedentemente
infarinata. Tagliate l’impasto
con una spatola in piccoli pezzi
e lavorateli con le mani fino ad
ottenere delle palline. Cuocete gli
gnocchi in acqua salata bollente.
Grattugiate nel piatto un po’ di ricotta
affumicata, adagiatevi sopra
Ricotta gnocchi
Ingredients for 4:
• for the gnocchi: ½ kg of fresh ricotta, if possible made locally; one
egg; approx. 20 pumpkin flowers: 50g of grated grana cheese; a
pinch of salt; white flour;
• for the seasoning: butter, smoked ricotta (soft type).
Clean the pumpkin flowers, remove the pistils and leave them to one
side, cutting off the hard part at the base of the flowers, because it
would give them a bitter taste. Put a little oil in a frying pan, and add
the flowers; sprinkle with salt and pepper and cook for ten minutes.
Remove from the heat and leave to cool. In a bowl, put the ricotta, the
egg, the grana cheese, a little flour and the pumpkin flowers. Work the
ingredients together by hand, without using an electric mixer, adding
flour until the mixture is of the right consistency to be rolled out on a
floured surface. Using a spatula, cut the mixture into little pieces, and
roll them into balls by hand. Cook the gnocchi in salted boiling water.
Grate a little of the smoked ricotta onto a place, place the drained
gnocchi on top, add the butter you have melted in a pan, and sprinkle
them with a little more grated ricotta. Decorate with the pistils of the
pumpkin flowers you laid aside earlier. Buon appetito!
© G. Maggiolini
The editorial staff of this magazine can personally recommend this fabulous dish, which we had the pleasure of tasting at the Alle Codole
restaurant in Canale d’Agordo during a recent press tour on the Dolomites. Many thanks to the proprietor Diego Tibolla for revealing to us
the secrets of this culinary masterpiece, which we are happy to share with our readers.
Prepare an ordinary egg pasta and leave it aside. For the filling, use sieved sheep’s milk ricotta, chopped black truffles and a little grated
Parmesan cheese. Shape the ravioli, cook them for a few minutes in boiling water with a little salt, then season with the Alpago lamb sauce,
flavoured with locally-grown cumin seeds and porcini mushrooms, chopped and sautéed in extra virgin olive oil, and a pesto made by
pounding cress in the mortar, which will give the dish a nice dash of colour.
Le Forade da nòza
Arabba
Fare un impasto con 5 rossi
d’uovo, la buccia grattuggiata di
un limone, 1 bicchierino di grappa,
mezzo bicchiere di birra, 1 bustina
di lievito, 200 g. di farina e 1
bustina di vanillina. Lavorare il
tutto e far riposare il composto in
frigorifero per un’ora, ben coperto
da pellicola trasparente.
Unire quindi due mele pelate e tagliate
a pezzetti e 4 tuorli montati
a neve; con un cucchiaio formare
delle palline e friggerle in olio ben
caldo. Servire spolverizzando con
zucchero a velo.
Giovanna Del Negro
simpatici e gustosi biscotti.
use a spoon to form little balls and
fry the balls in hot oil. Serve with a
sprinkling of icing sugar.
Weddings used to be very modest occasions,
and fine flowers or rosettes were once too
expensive to be used for decorating the outfits
of the guests, so the skilled hands of the local
womenfolk used to prepare the forade da nòza
instead: a round, doughnut-shaped biscuit that
was attached to wedding guests’ outfits as a
decoration and could be eaten at the end of
the reception. The recipe is a very simple one:
beat two egg yolks together until they are stiff,
together with some icing sugar, a little vanilla
sugar, wheat starch and yeast. Using a funnel,
pipe little circles onto a baking tray covered
with greaseproof paper; cake decorations can
be added according to taste. Bake the biscuits
for about half an hour, and once they are cool,
decorate them with cloth ribbons so they can
be attached to clothes.
To this day the recipe of the forade can be
used to bake attractive, tasty biscuits.
“BORGO DIFFUSO”
SAPPADA
turista.
Sappada.
bambini 0-3 anni, -20% 3-10 anni.
“BORGO DIFFUSO” is a new option for visitors to
Sappada.
Visitors who choose this innovative option will be
choosing something more than a package deal,
more than just a service, indeed more than just
a holiday: the “borgo diffuso” brings together
a whole range of different services that are
characteristic of the local area and that come
together to satisfy all the main requirements
tourists may have. The idea is similar to the
principle behind the “albergo diffuso”, spread
out over a number of buildings within an area,
and is thus based on the concept of visitors
finding themselves enveloped in a cosy, familiar
environment, in contact with nature and the
superb landscape of the Dolomites.
All the apartments that make up the
BORGO DIFFUSO are located in the main
neighbourhoods of Sappada, and visitors
will have plenty of opportunities to ski down
