Permanent-magnet mini
hydroelectric unit
Historically, hydroelectric generation represents one of the
first systems of exploiting renewable resources. Water in its
natural evaporation and condensation cycle is present on the
ground and essentially already concentrated, and with limited
channelling it is ready to deliver its accumulated potential
energy to various types of turbines.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, the greatest worldwide
economies started installing dams and forced pipeline
networks to convert water into electricity, that is, the most
easily usable and transportable form. At present the hydroelectric
generation is the most important renewable energy
source in the world, as it covers 20% of the entire production
of electricity.
Perhaps some of you have been lucky enough to visit the artificial
barriers of the Assuan dam (Egypt, 2 GW), of the
Three Gorges (Hubei, China, 18.2 GW), or the Hoover Dam
(river Colorado, Las Vegas, 2 GW). Such impressive structures
leave an indelible mark in the memory (and as they are
also visible on Google Earth without much enlargement, unfortunately
they also leave their mark on the earth's crust
and on ecosystems stabilized over geological eras).
I think I can safely state that mechanical and electromechanical
designers of any age have in common a feeling
of reverence when they see these huge structures, especially
when they remember how at the beginning of the last century
pioneer technicians (who had more insight that tools
of calculation) laid down the theoretical bases of synchronous
machines and power networks which are still used
nowadays.
In Italy in 2008 hydroelectric power represented 15% of all
energy produced (ten times more than wind power), through
2191 plants of various size. Enel controls 136 large dams (i.e.
dams with barrage higher than 15 metres), 211 hydroelectric
systems and 300 so-called mini-hydros; to these figures we
can add EdiPower stations and mini-stations (752 MW).
86% of the hydroelectric power installations in Italy are
power stations greater than 10 MW, and small plants are numerically
predominant: only 30% exceeds 3 MW and 56%
is below 400 kW. However small plants, both of the run-ofriver
and of the gravity type, are those most invested in, as
they present two relevant characteristics: low management
costs and low environmental impact (absence of any type of
polluting emissions).
INNOVATION
Thus the intensification of hydroelectric resources will continue
in this direction, paying attention to the small fluctuations
that have been disregarded up to now, to the
extension of existing plants and even the exploitation of
small aqueducts.
At the beginning of November 2009, ASI acquired the
order from Co-Ver Energia (a power generating company
in Verbania) to revamp the plant located at Monfalcone
Porto. The final “turnkey” customer of Co-Ver is EdiPower
Milano, which aims to increase production and to obtain
green certificates for a considerable proportion of its production.
The power station of Monfalcone Porto is the last of a series
of small run-of-river plants installed in the Canale de
Dottori before flowing into the sea (less than one kilometre
from the Monfalcone plant) and generates some hundreds
of kilowatts through a two tilted-axis Kaplan turbine.
Historically, the Canale de Dottori was fundamental for the
agricultural and economical development of the Isontino
(the area crossed by the river Isonzo). It was opened in
1905 to connect the river Isonzo with the gulf of Panzano
(about ten kilometres from Sagrado to Monfalcone) and
its power stations of Fogliano, Redipuglia, Ronchi, Monfalcone-Anconetta
and Monfalcone-Porto supplied power
to the Acquaroli tannery, Vermegliano cotton mill and various
Monfalcone factories. In May 1915 the canal had a
primary role at the beginning of the first world war, with
the Italian advance thwarted as the Austrians flooded it.
Curiously between the end of the eighteen hundreds and
the beginning of the nineteen hundreds the village of
Sagrado was considered a tourist resort due to the presence
of an electrotherapy clinic. The beautiful neo-medieval castle
of progressive doctors Francesco and Nino Alimonda
was in fact used as an “electric treatment centre”, essentially
powered by the Fogliano plant.
Mini - idroelettrico
a magneti permanenti
l’energia dell’acqua in energia elettrica, ovvero
in Google Earth senza tanti ingrandimenti, purtroppo
stazza.
L’Enel controlla 136 grandi dighe (ovvero dighe con
sbarramento superiore a 15 metri), 211 impianti
idroelettrici e 300 cosiddetti mini-idro; a questi vanno
aggiunte le centrali e centraline EdiPower (752 MW).
Nella Penisola l’86% della potenza idroelettrica installata
riguarda centrali di taglia superiore a 10 MW,
ed i piccoli impianti sono numericamente preponderanti:
solo il 30% supera i 3 MW e il 56% è addirittura
inferiore a 400 kW.
ai piccoli salti finora trascurati, all’ampliamento
degli impianti esistenti fino addirittura allo
sfruttamento di alcuni acquedotti.
Today the Canale de Dottori is characterized by a
flow rate which is little variable during the various
periods of the year;, however, the last power station
in Monfalcone Porto which flows into the sea - is subject
to a considerably variable reduction during the
hours of the day, due to the tide level on the delivery,
and therefore to a periodical variation of the hydraulic
head available.
In the "classic" solution (used for the previous revamping
of the power plant in the 90's) a speed multiplier
with straight angle transmission was installed
between Kaplan turbines and generators. Due to the
rotational speed imposed by the power network, the
only possible adjustment for the operating point was
the coordinated variation of the angles of attack of the
impeller blades and turbine diffuser. However this solution
involves a less than optimum exploitation of the
turbine's efficiency curves (series of equal efficiency
Fabio Luise e Cristina Scorlini
areas in the flow rate - head diagram of the turbine).
Since in the turbine-generator-transformer conversion
chain the fundamental element for global efficiency is
the turbine, it follows that with the classic solution the
optimum operation point can be exploited only for
short periods during the day. In practice, in variable
head systems, the classic solution results in a noticeable
decrease of productivity.
With the new solution, the generators are directly coupled
to the hydraulic turbine (without multiplying
gears, oil and loss of power) and the rotational speed
is coordinated at each moment to the angle of attack
of the impeller blades, according to the available head.
In this way the efficiency of the turbine - and of the
whole conversion chain - is set to the maximum levels
in any conditions of tide and water flow rate. Subsequently
the productivity increases and the return on
investment time decreases.
INNOVATION
Ronchi, Monfalcone-Anconetta e Monfalcone-Porto fornivano
poco variabile durante i vari periodi dell’anno; sfociando
però in mare l’ultima centrale -quella di Monfalcone Portoè
al valore precedente al revamping (da 197 kW a 305 kW);
Marzo 2011.
The permanent-magnet generators developed by ASI
have been tailored to the torque and speed requirements
and to the constraints imposed by the turbines:
due to the availability of flowing water, they have been
cooled with fluid through a casing in which the same
liquid used for removing leakages from the converter
is pushed.
They operate on a tilted axis and have a drilled rotor
allowing the passage of the impeller blade angle control
rod.
The generators are connected to inverters and the converted
power is directed towards the network through
active front end. Although the system's nominal voltage
is only 400V, being based on a permanent-magnet
rotor and potentially subject to the turbine's runaway
speed, it has been structurally dimensioned for a speed
of 700 rpm and isolated for 1000V.
Fabio Luise e Cristina Scorlini
The selected electromagnetic configuration is based on
a classic radial flow architecture and internal rotor
with superficial magnets and partially magnetic hollow
closure key.
The polarity selected for the best response to given
constraints is 32 poles, that is a relatively high number,
considering that the axis height is only 800mm: however
due to the flexibility given by the permanent magnet
solution and to the developed design, the final
result is axially compact (so compact that the genera-
tors stored beside the standard synchronous machines
seem a bonsai version) and efficiency exceeds 98%.
Due to the enhanced efficiency of the units, the generators
output power exceeds the pre-vamping output
value by one third (from 197 kW to 305 kW); to
maintain the promise of zero environmental impact,
INNOVATION
both the cooling fluid and the lubricant grease of the
bearings are ecological: even in case of failure and
spillage, no environmental damage is expected.
As for all other power stations of the Canale de Dottori,
the Monfalcone Porto station subject to revamping
is also completely remote controlled. The
machines were installed in January 2011 and production
starts in March 2011.
Also other turbine manufacturers look with interest
to the variable-speed hydraulic solution, and in particular
to the permanent magnet - direct coupling to
the turbine; this solution - although on a small scale
- aims to combine the past and future of a precious
resource.
Ernesto Soressi
A new computer
assisted development
system for automation
hardware
Introduction
The biggest challenge that the market poses is that of maintaining
competitiveness. In a rapidly evolving global environment
where increasing numbers of international companies
have access to resources, including skilled, low cost workers,
it is necessary that we make available to designers, tools and
processes capable of fully exploiting their potential.
In this area, the lion's share has traditionally been held by
CAE tools (Computer Aided Engineering).
For many years, Ansaldo Sistemi Industriali (ASI) has been developing
design tools with the specific objective of extending
the concept of CAD ie Computer Aided Design (a stand-alone
tool limited to producing drawings), giving rise instead to an
integrated management system of the design process, including
collection, processing and synthesis of plant information.
The NOD system, created for this purpose some twenty
years ago, was based on hardware and software systems
which are now obsolete, and ASI has therefore developed a
new tool, a development and expansion of NOD: SASHA
(Sistema Assistito Sviluppo Hardware di Automazione).
SASHA represents the first module of a new and broader approach,
which aims to allow for the systematic collection and
organization of all information into a single integrated database.
Adopting this approach provides great benefits to customers
who are able to obtain increasingly accurate
products, developed more speedily and with more options
for customisation. SASHA manages any type of automation
hardware, from any vendor, and is clearly especially suited
to integration with Ansaldo Sistemi Industriali's own automation
system the ARTICSTM.
Developed by a wholly in-house team at ASI, from a technical
and development skills point of view, Sasha is the culmination
of all the know-how that ASI has built up over the
years of implementing and delivering Relational Databases
for managing the production of steel products.
SASHA has been developed using the latest programming
techniques and languages (the development system .NET),
INNOVATION
which will ensure it can be maintained and developed for
years to come. It provides an excellent example of synergy
between business competencies whereby the end result is
greater than the sum of its parts.
As a result, the engineering team at Ansaldo Sistemi Industriali
now has one more tool available to customers for
analysing the needs of a plant and coming up with the best
possible solution. This can be tailored in terms of development
time, performance and quality of the final product.
Some theoretical concepts: the automation system.
Automation software is, in effect, the brain centre of a steel
plant. It implements the main and auxiliary functions, and
defines both behaviour and performance.
In the same way that the brain and nerves achieve the necessary
physical support and interaction with the outside
world, so the automation software relates to the outside
world through those components (hardware) which make
up its brain and nervous system.
The brain centre of the automation system is the CPU and
the PLC, which must process the information received, implement
the necessary controls and carry out the required
functions to achieve the desired objective.
In the same way that the nervous system serves as the interface
between the brain and the outside world, the automation
system serves as a two-way interface with the
plant, gathering physical measurement data from the sensors
and executing commands through the actuators.
A steel centre complex, like a steel mill, a rolling mill or a
pipe mill, consists of one or more production lines and
metal processing systems.
Un nuovo Sistema Assistito
Sviluppo Hardware
di Automazione
Introduzione
In uno scenario mondiale
strumenti e processi idonei a esprimere pienamente
le loro potenzialità. In questo scenario la parte del
leone è svolta dagli strumenti informatici CAE (Computer
Aided Engineering).
Aided Drawing, cioè uno strumento a sé stante e limitato
alla produzione di disegni), dando vita invece
ad una gestione integrata della progettazione, comprensiva
di raccolta, elaborazione e sintesi delle informazioni
d’impianto.
prodotto sempre più preciso, sviluppato in tempi più
rapidi e con possibilità di maggiori personalizzazioni.
SASHA gestisce qualsiasi tipo di hardware di automazione,
di qualsiasi fornitore ed è chiaramente ottimizzato
per l’integrazione del sistema di automazione
proprietario di Ansaldo Sistemi Industriali: l’AR-
TICSTM.
singole parti. Il team ingegneristico di Ansaldo Sistemi
Industriali ha quindi uno strumento in più, a
completa disposizione del cliente, per analizzare le
necessità dell’impianto e sintetizzare la migliore soluzione,
su misura in termini di tempi di sviluppo,
performance e qualità del prodotto finale.
10
Each system typically has many thousands of sensors,
of very different types: simple buttons or limit
switches, laser and/or X-ray sensors, speed and position
transducers etc. Each physical quantity, such as
pressure or temperature, is turned into information
which is transmitted by means of electrical, optical or
radio signals to the processing unit.
This information makes up the signals, the perceptions,
which the HW, the nervous system, delivers to the CPU,
the brain centre. This latter then responds by automatically
generating commands for the machinery installed.
Of course, the automation also provides
operators with all the information necessary for quality
control of the product: light panels, synoptic panels,
touch screen panels - all report real-time system status
and details of the process in hand.
Some specifics: the Development Process of the Automation
Hardware
The first step in designing the automation hardware is
the selection of all the sensors and actuators planned
for the system. Each component is then given a code
(we use the word "ITEM"), which identifies its function
and location in the system.
Next, we define the structure of the automation system,
establishing the computer systems (CPUs) required
and distributing them in the various sections of
the plant. Each CPU is in charge of the operation of a
part of the plant or a set of technological functions
and is connected to the relevant sensors and actuators.
To reduce the length of the cables, all signals coming
from any one area of the system are gathered together
Ernesto Soressi
in special cabinets conveniently placed around the system
(called RIO: Remote Input Output). From these,
the information is conveyed to the relevant CPU by
means of a single cable, which, in turn, carries hundreds
of input and output signals. Other high-speed
network cables connect all the processors together,
thus creating a single integrated control system, which
handles thousands of signals and commands as well
as diagnostic information.
The third phase of the project is to clarify the detail of
each CPU and RIO, together with development of all
the communication networks. For each cabinet it is
necessary to establish the number of input and output
boards, how many boards manage commands, how
many control analogue signals and also how many
special boards are required. The relevant plant component
must be connected at each entry point of every
single board, be it a button, a solenoid, a light bulb or
an X-ray meter.
We are then close to the final stage, which consists of
a large amount of functional design work, including
detailed wiring diagrams for each cabinet, lists of interconnecting
cables for each and every component
and of network cables, as well as drawings of the various
electrical boards.
The role of SASHA
SASHA automatically defines and optimises the list of
all components and calculates quantities, physical
characteristics and locations of all the boards. It also
calculates the quantity and type of cables needed.
Of course, all this is done based on standard criteria
but which can be customised case by case, consistent
INNOVATION
with contractual obligations (for example, the choice of
how many backup inputs and outputs should be provided).
The system represents a useful and effective tool for the ASI
team, but at the same time it provides enormous benefits to
our customers: the organization and time savings resulting
from its use is reflected in the accuracy of the final project
and in a significant cost reduction thanks to its ability to
automatically generate drawings of the system in question.
The use of a system to manage all the details of the development
process together enables us to have a complete
overview of the system and its critical issues, thus developing
a project capable of meeting all needs and requirements
for optimisation of the production process.
Once the development phase of the system-wide database
is completed, Sasha uses a graphics programme, EGS
EPLAN P8, to draw up the functional designs of the plant.
The automatic generation of drawings, amongst other
things, allows the designer to focus their attention on the
structure and definition of the automation system, the
nerve centre of the plant, and given that all the functional
diagrams generated by SASHA are consistent with a single
database, the result is that risks regarding errors caused by
manual transcription of information are eliminated.
The future of SASHA
SASHA is an open system and can thus be expanded. It
uses a relational database, which will allow the creation of
additional modules.
The advantages of this system will allow, for example, a
rapid expansion of its use even incorporating system devices,
including electrical power equipment.
Come
grandezze fisiche provenienti dai sensori e realizzare
Ciascun impianto conta tipicamente svariate migliaia
di sensori, di tipi molto diversi: semplici pulsanti o
contatti di fine-corsa, sensori laser o a raggi x, trasduttori
di velocità, di posizione, etc. Ciascuna grandezza
pannelli luminosi, sinottici, monitor touch panels, riportano
elaborazione (CPU) e distribuendoli geograficamente
nelle varie zone dell’impianto.
convenientemente disposti nell’impianto (in
A few notes for specialists
SASHA's features can be summarized as follows:
• Architecture client - server
• SQL Database Manager
• Latest generation software design tools .Net
• Automatic import of Motor and Sensor List
• Revision management
Ernesto Soressi
• Management of component and cable libraries
• Automatically generates document list
• Automatically generates automation wiring lists
• Automatic counting of Input/Output boards
• Control of Input/Output signal congruence
• Interfaces with EPLAN P8 and automatic generation
of functional diagrams.
INNOVATION
soddisfare tutti i requisiti richiesti e
necessari per l’ottimizzazione del
processo produttivo.
• Architettura client – server
• Data Base Manager SQL
• Strumenti di progettazione software
di ultima generazione .Net
important supply order has been won
for the BOROUGE 3 PROJECT plant –
RUWAIS, ABU DHABI, UAE.
ASI has followed the contractor from
the FEED phases, always endeavouring
to supply the best possible technical-economical
compromises, and
suggesting possible alternative solu-
INTEGRITY
tions for specific equipment (such as medium and high voltage
motors and frequency converters) offering the customer 150
years of experience in the field.
ABU DHABI POLYMERS COMPANY LIMITED (joint venture of
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company - ADNOC and Borealis) is the
end user of the plant, and their purpose is to increase significantly
their production of polymers, in particular ethylene,
polypropylene, polyethylene, thin film, power cables and
The Borouge 3 plant is located in Ruwais in the Abu Dhabi Emirate
and expects to increase its production capacity by 2,5 million
tons per year by the end of 2013, thanks to the extension
which is under construction. ASI has been confirmed as partner
in excellence for this important project, due to the previous
optimal performances achieved on the plants of Borouge and
Borouge 2.
Also in this case ASI was seen to be a partner capable of adapting
its products to the specific requirements of the various
parts of the plant, having awarded the supply of motors and
frequency converters for the following areas of the plant:
• Polyethylene units
Answer Drives in the role of EPC
in photovoltaic systems:
the dawn of 6 MW plus
In previous publications relating to the
development of the SolarGate product,
the evolution of Answer Drives'
offering to the large scale photovoltaic
installations market was highlighted,
from SolarGate in frames to self-contained
turnkey solutions, which could
be either air or water cooled. In this
section it is proposed to describe the
continuity of the process and the direction
Answer Drives is taking in the
photovoltaic sector, not so much focusing
on the product, but rather, in
this case, on the market.
The integration that we are going to
describe was already being investigated
at the end of 2009, when delivery
of the Ciminna plant was approaching.
At the time, this was a facility intended
to provide more than 7MW of
power, proposed and developed by a
company which made photovoltaic
modules together with an engineering
company.At that juncture, Answer
Miguel Pretelli
Drives presented itself as a supplier
for all the components of the electrical
side of the plant. EPC set the parameters,
various competitors competed,
and Answer Drives, like all the others,
offered its own considerable expertise
in relation to components.
Having experienced from the beginning
all the dynamic development of
the plant, however, it became clear to
the funder concerned that there was
a need to talk with a solid partner,
someone economically "robust", and
with a history of success behind them.
Answer Drives, part of Ansaldo Sistemi
Industriali, looked a better option than
either the plant developers or the project
partners who made photovoltaic
units. Hence the request of the first
investment fund to deal directly with
a single EPC, Answer Drives.
It became clear that this was one of
the critical success factors that put our
team into a privileged position thanks
to our economic strength and our
many years of experience in plant engineering.
This awareness was clearly not sufficient
for a company that was originally
established as a supplier of components.
Without doubt, there was need
of that part which we will call "offensive",
the technical side of the business,
that is, the structuring of its plant
construction competencies which
made up the DNA of Ansaldo Sistemi
Industriali, but also the "defensive"
aspect of the business, that is, all the
managerial and contractual activity on
which the aims and attributes for providing
a turnkey photovoltaic system
depend.
And while the strengths and experience
in human resources of the parent
company were transferred almost effortlessly
into the first of the above, a
huge amount of work on the part of
the management team and its pool
of lawyers began on the second.
INTEGRITY
A methodology was adopted of mediation along with development
of a solid EPC contract which was to form the basis
for a coherent O&M contract for the care and management
of photovoltaic work for the next twenty years.
The first contract, like the second, featured severe penalties
for not meeting productivity benchmarks. However, dialogue
with one of the most active and important global investors in
photovoltaic activity, and the possible beginning of this first
exciting activity, always carried with it an air of challenge,
given that it would be necessary to complete the plant in four
months in order to qualify for the incentive tariffs for 2010.
This was unsurprising, if not because the plant, located in
Sicily, in the municipality of Ciminna, had a total capacity of
6.771 MW, spread over an area of 140,000 square meters,
occupied primarily by 29,400 multicrystalline photovoltaic
modules in some hundred string boxes, distributed in 7 container
stations of 1MW each.
We cannot fail to mention also the skilful management of our
PM of more than 180 people involved in the construction of
the plant, as well as all the civil works required.
And so began the greatest challenge of 2010: to finish the
whole plant in four months and strengthen the new structure
so as to lay the groundwork for new plants planned for 2011.
The most significant stages have therefore been the signing
of the contract on 8th August 2010, the beginning of the civil
works on 23rd August, the foundations for the support pillars
on 18th October, the installation of photovoltaic modules from
Answer Drives nel ruolo
Answer Drives, parte del gruppo Ansaldo Sistemi Industriali,
More numbers at a glance:
• 6,400m of underground drainage
• 5,888 support pillars put in place
with reinforced concrete foundations
• 750 tonnes of support structures
• 200 tonnes of steel for foundations
• 2,500m3 of concrete for foundations
(more than 300 cement trucks full)
• 43 trucks for transporting the support
structures and foundation reinforcements
• 53 trucks to transport the panels
• More than 295,000 bolts
All this plus the innovation of Answer
Drive's R&D relating to both the hardware
devices and remote management
software, with major industrial implications
which further extend the already
wide range of products offered
in the catalogue among the major
components for photovoltaic systems.
The great undertaking to finish the
first plant within planned timescales
has inevitably encouraged the development
of the market, so much so
that today Answer Drives is already
working on a new plant in Tarquinia
(approximately 2MW), and a new organizational
structure with a view to
new acquisitions.
It has been a great result, driven by a
tremendously rewarding collaboration
between north and south, right on
the threshold of this 150th anniversary
of National Unity! And then it will be
a happy coincidence that they have
placed, in Ciminna itself, Luchino' Visconti's
masterpiece "The Leopard"
where the great pride of Sicily passionately
depicts a reality which has
enormous development potential for
our country.
INTEGRITY
Ancora numeri in breve:
FROM DOT SYNDROME TO POINTILLISM
In today’s world of International business we all have
to beware and pay attention to what I call the Dot
Syndrome. We all know what a dot is. It is that small
round point we all made the first time we touched a
crayon, pen or pencil to a sheet of paper. As we grew,
the dot took on even greater significance. We learned
that it represented the end of a thought or sentence.
As adults we learned that signing on the dotted line
meant making a serious contractual commitment. If
you stop to think about, you will discover dozens of
ways in which the simple dot governs our lives and
has subconsciously conditioned our behaviour.
Perhaps the most damaging conditioning of all came
from a simple exercise, a game we all played as children,
connecting the dots. I’m sure you all remember
doing this at least once in your life, if not for fun then,
maybe, at school as you were learning your numbers.
By connecting the dots in the proper sequence you
were able to create an image, the many became one.
Believe it or not, this simple concept has been at the
root of Corporate Organization since the rise of industrialism
and is today, the fundamental theory behind
social networking.
But what if there were
an alternative to connecting
the dots?
What if you could
achieve a perfect unison
of thought - a common
goal – without connecting
the dots?
This is the theory behind
empowerment which is
one of the fundamental
pillars of the Lean Manufacturing
philosophy
that our company began
implementing several
years ago.
INTELLECT
A little while back, I had
an informal conversation
with a colleague who
complained that he felt
neglected. He went on
to describe how he had
solved a series of problems
and how, in his
opinion, his superiors,
totally ignored his work.
I felt sorry for him, and
could certainly sympathize,
but as he spoke, I
couldn’t help thinking to
myself with pride, our
corporate culture has finally
evolved.
My colleague was suffering
from the dot syndrome.
The reason he
felt neglected was because
he was letting himself be conditioned by that old
connect-the-dot theory rather than feeling empowered.
The dot syndrome is the single most important obstacle to
achieving full empowerment. It isn’t an easy Syndrome to
overcome because it touches on an individual’s views of
himself and his role within an organization.
The only way to overcome the Dot Syndrome is through
dialogue. Note that I used the word dialogue and not communication.
The three most common definitions of dialogue taken from
Merriam Webster’s dictionary are:
• a conversation (oral exchange of sentiments, observations,
opinions or ideas) between two or more persons
• an exchange of ideas and opinions
• a discussion between representatives of parties to a conflict
that is aimed at resolution
Why is dialogue different from communication?
Communication is often unilateral, i.e. one way. To communicate
something means to transmit information. It does
not involve the exchange of ideas and opinions.
A dialogue, on the other hand, requires the participation
of both parties. It is a further step in empowerment.
The company communicates its strategies for the future, the
markets it wishes to conquer, the products it plans on developing,
the sales targets and EBITDA goals it hopes to
achieve and then the dialogue should begin.
crediate o no, questo semplice concetto è sempre
obiettivo comune senza collegare i puntini?
quella vecchia teoria dell’ “unisci i puntini” piuttosto
che sentirsi responsabilizzato e godere dei vantaggi
dell’empowerment. La sindrome del punto è l'ostacolo
personale più difficile da superare per raggiungere
l'empowerment completo.
23
24
Each and every one of us has an obligation to ask
questions, to understand our proper role in the overall
vision of things and then to act accordingly.
As our company grows, our gratification will probably
come more from knowing that we are part of an
overall picture, that we are contributing to achieving
a common goal, than from a pat on the back from a
boss or superior.
(This doesn’t mean that a pat on the back every once
in awhile will no longer be appreciated.)
Does it work?
Empowerment should be compared with pointillism,
a post-impressionistic art form that is best exemplified
by Pierre-George Seurat’s “Sunday afternoon on the
Island of La Grande Jatte”.
The painting, an enormous canvass measuring 207.8
cm x 308 cm, was composed using tiny dots of color
– thousands of dots fill the canvass. Up close, one
can see each single dot of color and it is almost impossible
to see the overall picture, but step back and
Kaila Haines
the image suddenly becomes crystal clear – a masterpiece.
So if you are ever in a situation where you feel that
your work is being neglected, that the company doesn’t
appreciate your contribution to its overall success
- take a step back. Look at the overall picture and
then talk to the people around you.
Don’t be afraid to ask that all important question: are
we the right shade of green for a maritime pine?
INTELLECT
Comunicare qualcosa significa trasmettere informazioni
intorno a voi.
NATIVE VIEWS: A TRIP BACK
TO MEDIAEVAL TIMES
Grazzano Visconti is a mediaeval style village situated
in the Comune of Vigolzone, in the province of
Piacenza. It lies about 15 kilometres from Piacenza
and the entire village of around 210,000m2 is owned
by the Viscount of Modrone. There are about 180 inhabitants.
The main feature of the village is that early
last century it was entirely rebuilt around the castle
which dates from the 14th century, but which now
lies in ruins. Indeed, Gian Galeazzo Visconti laid the
foundation stone of the Cathedral of Milan in 1386
and authorized the construction work of another, less
famous but nonetheless very interesting building,
Grazzano Castle, for the wedding of his sister Beatrice
and John Anguissola.
Restoration has now transformed an area formerly
made up of old farms and uncultivated land into a
faithful reproduction of a mediaeval village, down to
the smallest detail. On the walls of the houses there
are paintings, carvings, coats of arms and the village
also features traditional arts and crafts workers producing
highly artistic wrought iron work and furniture
made in the mediaeval style.
In 1986 the mediaeval village of Grazzano Visconti
was granted the right to call itself a "città d'arte" or
arts and crafts city of Piacenza. This was because it
retained such centuries-old skills as woodworking,
ironworking and ceramics.
The village is small and primarily consists of assorted
shops selling swords, shields, helmets, resin statues,
perfume, minerals, etc.
For some years now it has been possible to visit the
courtyard of the castle accompanied by a guide for a
fee, but the rest of the village can be visited free of
charge.
There are four entrance gates to the village. Visitors
park their cars just outside the walls and from there
find themselves immersed in a realistic mediaeval village,
rebuilt to perfection during the last century and
still beautifully maintained. Nothing is missing: from
the All'Armeria Chapel and the grand mansion house
to the homes of the ordinary people, everything is in
perfect mediaeval style.
INTELLECT
It is difficult to
avoid buying completely
unusual
objects: there are
replicas of mediaeval
weapons of
many kinds,
household items
in traditionally
fashioned wrought
iron, candlesticks,
chandeliers, bows
and arrows to suit
all budgets, ceramic
plates and
more. For fans of such things, there is also a small card and
stationery shop with a wide selection of parchment, beautiful
traditionally bound books and magical texts…
The town also holds themed exhibitions and historical military
re-enactments. In the re-enactment I saw, a soldier
who lost a duel was put in the stocks and the audience was
called upon to decide the fate of the poor unfortunate with
a simple thumbs-up or thumbs-down gesture.
To conclude, a visit to Grazzano Visconti is definitely to be
recommended, a great place for a day out in one of the
most beautiful areas of Piacenza and set in vineyards that
produce a particular grape. The wine area is known as the
Colli Piacentini and it forms a relatively homogeneous
wine-making area which has resulted in DOC (Denomination
of Controlled Origin) wines.
These are known as the DOC of the Colli Piacentini.
A visit to the village is hugely enjoyable, as is the opportunity
to purchase truly special handcrafted objects.
There are plenty of choices for a good bite to eat and drink
in the area and opportunities to try the famous local neck
of pork and bacon (coppa and pancetta) with fried gnocchi
and a good glass of Gutturnio or Bonarda.
in resina, profumi, minerali ecc...
scorso secolo e ancora oggi splendidamente tenuto.
tutto in perfetto stile medievale.
tipi, libri rilegati come antiche e magiche scritture...
uva.
1.
Eduardo, the great-grandfather of Anna, is a very advanced
age but he is not yet centenarian.
All we can say is that, last year, his age was a multiple
of 8 and that next year it will be a multiple of 7.
How old is grandfather Eduardo?
2.
Settimo and Romano run the 100 mt with a constant
speed. When Settimo crosses the finish line, Romano
run only 95mt. So the first, Settimo, wins with a 5 mt
advantage.
In a second race, Settimo (who wants to make the
race more "balanced") is voluntarily penalized by
starting 5 mt behind the starting line.
Assuming that the two athletes run with the same
speed of the first race, who will win the second race?
3.
Fortunato has four children: a daughter, the eldest,
and triplets.
The eldest daughter, who collects dolls, receives 14
dolls at each birthday, from her first birthday. Regarding
the triplets, they receive 4 teddy bears each, on
their birthday.
Fortunato realizes that, by adding the square of his
age with the square of the age of his children and
adding 1, he obtains 1998, and adding to the square
of his age, the number of dolls and bears in his children
possession and adding 1, he gets the product of
his wife’s age, who is 29 years old, and the age of his
mother, who is 71.
GIOCHI
PER LA MENTE
1.
2.
Settimo e Romano corrono i 100 m, supponiamo a
e tre gemelli. La figlia maggiore, che colleziona bambole,
riceve 14 bambole a ogni compleanno, a partire
suoi figli e aggiungendo 1, ottiene 1998.
ANSWERS
Keep training with... RISPOSTE
1.
Make a list with multiples of 8 and 7 (less than 100).
We have to find a multiple of 7 that exceeds by two
units a multiple of 8.
This situation occurs twice: 42 and 40 and 98 and 96.
Discard the first solution: 41 can not be considered
an advanced age.
Grandfather Eduardo is 97 years.
2.
When Romano runs 95mt, Settimo runs 100mt. They
run the same time with a 5 mt difference. Therefore
Settimo is faster than the Romano, he'll finish first.
3.
Considering x = Fortunato’s age,
y = his eldest daughter’ age,
Z = his triplets’ age
we get:
x2 + y2 + 3z2 + 1 = 1998
and
x2 + 14y + 12z + 1 = 29 x 71.
By difference, the equation (y-7)2 + 3(z-2)2 = 0
means that y = 7, z = 2.
Substituting these values in the first equation,
we get x = 44.
Fortunato is 44 years old.
7 1 5 2 3 8 9 4 6
1.
otteniamo:
x2 + y2 + 3z2 + 1 = 1998 e x2 + 14y + 12z + 1 =
29 x 71.
Da qui, per differenza, segue la relazione:
(y-7)2 + 3(z-2)2 = 0 che implica y = 7, z = 2.
Sostituendo nella prima equazione, otteniamo x = 44.
Fortunato ha 44 anni.
