I Part (20 hours) - Fundamentals of Geology. Earth’s interior. Plate tectonics. Palaeomagnetism. Trenches, ridges<br />
and fracture zones. Seafloor sprea<strong>di</strong>ng. Earthquakes and volcanoes <strong>di</strong>stribution. - Rocks and minerals.<br />
Polymorphism. Crystal systems. Physical properties of minerals. Structure of minerals. Rock cycle - Igneous rocks<br />
Classification and nomenclature. Clays: chemical-physical properties - Atmospheric <strong>di</strong>agenesis. Weathering of<br />
rocks. Se<strong>di</strong>mentary rocks - Metamorphic rocks. Regional and contact metamorphism - Diagenesis of carbonate<br />
rocks: karstic processes. Practices: recognition of rock samples<br />
II Part (20 hours) - Geological time. Relative and absolute age. Stratigraphy principles. Fossils. Geological<br />
time-table. Rea<strong>di</strong>ng and interpreting the geological maps - Rock deformation. Folds. Anticlines, synclines, domes.<br />
Faults. Nomenclature of faults. Direct, inverse and transform faults. Orogenesis - Mass wasting. Classification and<br />
nomenclature of slope movements. Subsidence. Slope stability: influencing and triggering factors - Discontinuities<br />
and systems of <strong>di</strong>scontinuities. Geological-structural field survey. Equi-areal projections. Discontinuity description<br />
and surveys along transects. Rock mass classification - Basic hydrogeology. Darcy law. Intrinsic permeability and<br />
hydraulic conductivity. Permeability measures in laboratory and in the field. Aquifer formations. Aquifers,<br />
aquitards and aquicludes. Phreatic and confined aquifers; porous and fissured aquifers. Heterogeneity and<br />
anisotropy. Piezometers. Piezometric surfaces. Flow nets. Practices: geological maps<br />
III Part (20 hours) Engineering properties of rocks. Applied petrography. Geophysical methods: electrical<br />
soun<strong>di</strong>ngs, seismic soun<strong>di</strong>ngs, acoustic logs. ground penetrating radar. Electromagnetic methods. Magnetometry.<br />
Gravimetry. Gamma logs. Nuclear probes. Well-logs: temperature and salinity logs - Planning of geological<br />
surveys for the study of landslides and for the project of underground works, roads and dams.<br />
