La saga di Paul Getty non è la buona vecchia
storia americana del successo di chi parte
straccione e arriva alla ricchezza, ma molto più
realisticamente di un ricco che diventa sempre
più ricco.
Getty ereditò da suo padre una ditta che fece
diventare la Getty Oil Company un impero che
controllava duecento società. Alla sua morte
nel 1976, era considerato l’uomo più ricco del
mondo, con una fortuna stimata intorno ai tre
miliardi di dollari.
Paul Getty amava coniare motti di saggezza
pseudo-popolare, come, “I mansueti saranno
eredi della terra, ma non delle concessioni
minerarie” e “Svegliati presto, lavora sodo,
scopri un giacimento di petrolio”.
Non era molto dotato per la vita familiare, ma
creò case sontuose con vaste collezioni di antichità,
come a La Posta Vecchia, vicino a Roma,
dove lo si vede nella foto.

rags to riches success story, but the more realistic
account of riches to ever more riches.
Getty inherited a business from his father and
built it up as the Getty Oil Company that
eventually controlled an empire of two hundred
companies. At his death in 1976, he was said to
be the richest man in the world, with a personal
fortune of three billion dollars.
He was fond of coining pseudo-homespun
adages, such as, “ The meek shall inherit the
earth, but not the mineral rights” and “Rise
early, work hard, strike oil”.
Though not gifted in family life, he created
sumptuous homes with vast collections of
antiquities, as at La Posta Vecchia, near Rome,
where he is seen in the photograph.
