Giuliano Briganti, visita la Biennale di Venezia
nel 1978. Critico d’arte per l’Espresso e la
Repubblica, si teneva al corrente degli sviluppi
contemporanei nelle arti, come facevano le
altre due persone nella foto, Monica Incisa,
artista, e Luisa Briganti, moglie di Giuliano e
proprietaria e direttore della celebre Galleria
dell’Oca a Roma.
Briganti, lungi dall’essere un mero cronista
del mondo dell’arte, era professore universitario
di storia dell’arte moderna e contemporanea
a Siena e a Roma. Allo stesso tempo era
un profondo conoscitore dell’arte, che ha
scritto saggi su Giusto di Gand e Pedro Berruguete,
il Manierismo, Pietro da Cortona, i
Bamboccianti, la pittura emiliana del ‘600 e
del ‘700, i vedutisti europei, e Vanvitelli. I suoi
interessi, e scritti, includevano anche i Simbolisti,
Savinio e suo fratello Giorgio de Chirico.
Di quest’ultimo ha curato il catalogo generale
– un monumento – che copre la produzione
dell’artista dal 1908 al 1970.
Briganti veniva consultato spesso da altri storici
e collezionisti circa l’attribuzione di opere
d’arte. Era molto generoso nel concedere a
studiosi e studenti l’accesso alla sua vasta
biblioteca e al suo archivio fotografico.

Giuliano Briganti visits the Venice Biennale in
1978. As the art critic on l’Espresso and la
Repubblica he kept abreast of contemporary
developments in art, as of course did his
companions, Monica Incisa, the artist, and his
wife, Luisa Briganti, owner and director of the
well-known Galleria dell’Oca in Rome.
No mere chronicler of the art world, Briganti was
a university professor of the history of modern
and contemporary art in Siena and Rome. At the
same time he was an art historian in depth, who
wrote studies on Justus of Ghent and Pedro
Berruguete, Mannerism, Pietro da Cortona, the
Bamboccianti, Emilian painting of the 16th and
17th centuries, the view painters of Europe, and
Vanvitelli. His interests and writings also
included the Symbolists, Savinio and his brother
Giorgio de Chirico, for whose oeuvre he edited the
monumental general catalog that covers the
artist’s production from 1908 to 1970.
He was often consulted by other historians and
collectors concerning the attribution of art works,
and was generous in allowing students and
scholars access to his vast private library and
photo archive.
