32. VETRINISMO
Il paesaggio urbano è esaltato dall’estetica
delle vetrine. Ci hanno assicurato che, da
Duchamp in poi, l’arte è ciò che l’artista
sostiene essa sia, e quindi l’allestimento delle
vetrine dei negozi senza dubbio è arte. Infatti
il pedigree delle vetrine comprende maestri
moderni come Dalì, Rauchenberg e Warhol.
Ma anche mani sconosciute creano composizioni
rimarchevoli ovunque vengano esposti
prodotti di largo consumo, spaziando dal sexy
sfarzoso dei negozi di moda ai piaceri del gusto
offerti da droghieri e salumieri.
In questa immagine le sfere dei formaggi e le
catene di salsicce creano una notevole natura
morta, che ci riporta iconograficamente alla
storia dell’uomo e della catena alimentare. I
formaggi, prodotti ovunque il latte sia disponibile,
contano circa mille varietà nel mondo e ci
ricordano il nostro primordiale passato di
pastori. Le salsicce, un’altra antica forma di
cibo lavorato, entrano nella storia con i Greci, e
sono citate da Omero. Diventano una fonte di
proteine nel medioevo, dato che si possono
conservare per tutto l’anno e oggi se ne producono
almeno duecento tipi in tutto il mondo.

WINDOW DRESSING
The townscape is enhanced by the esthetics of
shop windows. In our time, when we have been
assured, from Duchamp on, that art is what the
artist says it is, then window displays certainly
qualify. In fact their pedigree includes the
creations in this field of such modern masters as
Dalì, Rauschenberg and Warhol.
But also unsung hands produce striking
compositions wherever consumer goods are
displayed, ranging from the sexy, sumptuary
come-on of fashion shops to the gustatory
delights of grocery stores and delicatessens.
Here the spherical cheeses and lengthy sausages
make a notable still life, and iconographically
take us back to the history of mankind and the
food chain. Cheeses, made wherever the milk of
domestic livestock is available, number some
thousand varieties around the world, and are a
heritage from our primordial pastoral past.
Sausages, another age-old form of processed
food, enter history with the Greeks, and are
mentioned in Homer, but become a major source
of protein in the Middle Ages as a means of
preserving meat all year round, and today at
least two hundred types are produced in countries
around the world.
