29. ACQUA ALTA
Acqua alta è il titolo, in italiano, del libro che
Joseph Brodsky ha dedicato alle sue esperienze
Veneziane. In inglese si chiama Watermark,
che rappresenta un abile gioco di parole per
dare l’idea di Venezia, in quanto vuol dire filigrana
e nello stesso tempo è “il segno dell’acqua”,
come landmark è il monumento che
segna il paesaggio.
L’allagamento periodico della città acquatica
evoca però la catastrofe: Venezia che affonda
inesorabilmente nel mare o il mare che sale
per effetto del riscaldamento globale e annega
la Sposa dell’Adriatico.
Mose, è l’acronimo di Modello Sperimentale
Elettromagnetico e richiama il prosciugamento
del mar Rosso – per designare le paratie
manovrabili che controllano l’impeto dell’alta
marea, provocata dallo scirocco e dalle fasi
lunari.
Come tutte le proposte per il futuro di Venezia
il progetto ha sostenitori e oppositori. Il risultato
sono decenni di stallo.
Su uno dei camminatoi in legno, installati dal
comune durante l’acqua alta per mantenere i
cittadini all’asciutto, i pedoni allineati con gli
ombrelli scorrono lungo il Canal Grande in
direzione di Piazza S. Marco.

WATERMARK
The adroit play on words and images to stand for
Venice was Joseph Brodsky’s title for a book on his
Venetian experiences. In the Italian edition this
became Acqua Alta, losing the English
reverberation from “landmark”, as well as the
suggestion of a palimpsest or a reading between
the lines.
In reality, the periodic flooding of the watery city
called the Acqua Alta evokes catastrophe: Venice
inexorably sinking into the sea or the sea rising,
in the wake of global warming, and drowning the
Bride of the Adriatic.
Mose (Modello sperimentale elettromeccanico
or Experimental electro-mechanical model) is the
acronym, recalling the drying of the Red Sea, for
the maneuverable flood gates designed to counter
the surge into the Lagoon of high tides, provoked
by the scirocco and the phases of the moon.
Like all proposals for the future of Venice it has
supporters and opponents, resulting in stalemates
over the decades.
On one of the wooden walkways put out by City
Hall during floods to keep the citizenry dry-shod,
foot-wise pedestrians, alined and umbrellaed,
head along the Grand Canal toward the Piazzetta
of St. Mark’s.
