28. LA FIERA DI SANT’AMBROGIO
La festa invernale di Sant’Ambrogio, patrono
di Milano, commemora la sua nomina a vescovo
della città nel 374. All’epoca, Milano era la
sede dell’imperatore romano d’occidente e
Ambrogio aveva ampia esperienza amministrativa
come prefetto consolare della Liguria
e dell’Emilia. Era anche, però, teologo dottissimo
– particolarmente abile nelle dispute con
gli Ariani – ed è uno dei quattro grandi Dottori
della Chiesa.
Alla ricorrenza della festa, Milano allestisce ogni
anno una fiera mercato prima di Natale, dal 7 al
22 dicembre. Le bancarelle che vendono oggetti
usati e d’antiquariato, riempiono le strade intorno
alla chiesa di S. Ambrogio, il cui nucleo originale
è stato edificato dal Santo nel 386.
La fiera è sempre affollata dai milanesi, dato
che segna la festività locale più importante. In
dialetto viene orgogliosamente chiamata Oh
bei! Oh bei!; dove bei sta per il plurale italiano di
bello o fine, riferito agli spettacoli ed ai contenuti
del mercato.

AMBROSIAN FAIR
The wintry feast of Saint Ambrose, Milan’s patron
saint, commemorates his appointment as the
bishop of the city in 374. At the time, Milan was
the seat of the western Roman emperors and
Ambrose had had extensive administrative
experience as consular prefect of Liguria and
Emilia. A learned theologian as well – highly
successful in disputes with the Arians – he is one
of the four great Doctors of the Church.
In celebration of his feast day Milan puts on a
market and fair every year towards Christmas,
from the 7th to the 22nd of December. The stalls
selling second-hand and antique furniture, as
well as clothes, gifts and sweets, fill the streets
around the church of S. Ambrogio, whose original
nucleus was built by the saint in 386.
The fair is always thronged by the Milanese, as it
marks their most important local holiday. In
their dialect they title it enthusiastically as Oh
bei! Oh bei!; the bei, a plural of what would be
bello in standard Italian, meaning “fine” or
“beautiful”, refer to the spectacle and the
contents of the market.
