23. NAVI DA GUERRA E DA DIPORTO
Uno strano giuoco di prospettiva fa sembrare
che si reclami il servizio gondola sul fianco
della nave di guerra.
L’incrociatore Vittorio Veneto sta alla fonda
nella laguna di Venezia dove il Canal Grande
sbocca davanti alla Piazzetta. Gli ambientalisti
fanno campagna contro il passaggio di grandi
cargo per Venezia verso Mestre. Restrizioni
eventuali, però, non si potrebbero applicare
alle navi della Marina né tantomeno alle navi
da crociera.
Da mezzo di trasporto, quando ogni famiglia
veneziana che poteva permettersela aveva una
gondola, queste barche nere lucenti ed eleganti
sono diventate natanti di diporto principalmente
per i turisti. I veneziani benestanti ora
possiedono motolance.
Per i visitatori, i gondolieri sono mirabilmente
pittoreschi con i loro cappelli adorni di
nastri e la maglietta a righe. Pilotano con maestria
le loro lunghe gondole nei canali, emettendo
strani gridi per avvertire gli altri gondolieri
nascosti dietro gli angoli del loro arrivo.
Le gondole, però, si vedono anche aggruppate
grottescamente attorno a una zattera illuminata
che passa per il Canal Grande di notte con tenori
a bordo che interpretano canzoni napoletane,
non proprio appropriate, come O sole mio.

WARSHIP AND PLEASURE CRAFT
A perspective quirk makes it seem that the
gondola service is being advertised on the side of
the battleship.
The cruiser, Vittorio Veneto, lies in the lagoon of
Venice where the Grand Canal debouches in front
of the Piazzetta. Environmentalists campaign
unsuccessfully against heavy shipping going by
Venice to the industrial port of Mestre on the
mainland. But eventual restrictions could not be
made to apply to the Navy or for that matter to
the cruise ships.
From a means of transport, when every Venetian
family that could afford it had a gondola, the
sleekly elegant black passenger boats have become
pleasure craft mainly for the tourists. Venetians
with means now own motorboats.
For visitors the gondoliers are bravely picturesque
in their beribboned straw hats and striped shirts
as they masterfully steer their lengthy gondolas
around corners in the canals, shouting strange
warning cries to announce their presence.
But the gondolas are also used in grotesque
clumps around an illuminated raft that
negotiates the Grand Canal at night while tenors
render inappropriate Neapolitan songs, like O
sole mio.
