18. AMERICANO ALL’ESTERO
Lo scrittore americano, Gore Vidal, famoso
romanziere, brillante commediografo, saggista
contro l’Italia, preferendo godere senza commenti
venduta.
AMERICAN ABROAD
The American writer, Gore Vidal, famous
novelist, playwright, brilliant essayist and
waspish polemicist, often directs his sharp barbs
at the United States government, denouncing the
foreign policy of the “Imperial Republic”.
For some decades he divided his time between
California and Italy. As a guest he refrained from
exercising his critical acumen on Italy, preferring
to enjoy without comment the beauty and creature
comforts of an eyrie-like villa perched on a cliff at
Ravello. The photograph was taken there in 1977.
The long chapter of Vidal’s presence in Italy
ended with the death of his life-time partner,
Howard Austen, and the Villa Rondinaia has
been sold.
