La bella Palma Bucarelli, qui alla Biennale del<br />

Come direttore della Galleria Nazionale d’Arte<br />
Moderna aggiornò l’istituzione estendendo gli<br />
spazi e la collezione, allestendo mostre importanti,<br />
come quella - senza precedenti per<br />
Roma- su Picasso.<br />
Il suo fascino femminile era accompagnato da<br />
una cultura profonda e da una scaltra abilità<br />
nell’ottenere finanziamenti dal parlamento e<br />
dal governo.<br />
La collaborazione con Giulio Carlo Argan, storico<br />
dell’<strong>art</strong>e e Sindaco di Roma, contribuì<br />
considerevolmente al successo della sua carriera.<br />

The beautiful Palma Bucarelli, seen here at the<br />
1962 Venice Biennale, was a legendary figure in<br />
the postwar Roman <strong>art</strong> world.<br />
As director of the National Gallery of Modern Art<br />
she updated that institution by expanding the<br />
premises and the collections, and putting on<br />
major exhibitions, including a ground-breaking<br />
Picasso show.<br />
Her feminine appeal was more than matched by<br />
erudition and a canny ability to secure important<br />
subsidies from Parliament and the government.<br />
Teamwork with Giulio Carlo Argan, <strong>art</strong> historian<br />
and sometime mayor of Rome, contributed<br />
substantially to her successful career.<br />
