15. CAMPAGNA INCONTAMINATA
Garavicchio è una proprietà in Toscana, proprio
sul confine con il Lazio, dei fratelli Caracciolo,
Carlo e Nicola. Essi furono avvicinati
alcuni decenni fa dall’artista Niki de Saint
Phalle, che propose un progetto scultoreo nel
bosco e sottobosco vicino alla loro casa. I suoi
lavori erano generalmente a colori molto vivaci,
ma Niki promise che avrebbe lavorato in
toni sommessi di verdi e marroni che si sarebbero
fusi nell’ambiente senza disturbarlo.
Così fu all’inizio, e la foto mostra la discreta
presenza del suo lavoro nella macchia. Con lo
sviluppo del progetto, comunque, mattonelle
colorate e scintillanti coprirono le armature, e
come disse un addetto comunale dopo aver
fotografato il monumento completo, “ Spirito
scarsamente ecologico”.

UNSPOILED COUNTRYSIDE
Garavicchio is an estate in Tuscany, just over the
border with Lazio, belonging to the Caracciolo
brothers, Carlo and Nicola. They were
approached a couple of decades ago by the artist
Niki de Saint Phalle, who proposed to do a
sculptural project in the woods and underbrush
near their house. She assured them that though
her work was generally highly colored she would
keep to muted greens and browns that would
blend inconspicuously with the natural
surroundings.
In the beginning this was so and the photograph
shows the discreet presence of her work in the
midst of verdure. As the project grew, however,
colored and scintillating tiles clad the cement
supports and as one of the local municipal
functionaries said, as he photographed the
resulting monument, “This is scarcely ecological
in spirit”.
