Antonia, allora Fraser, ora Pinter, nata nella
dinastia Pakenham di scrittori, è l’autore celebrato
di storie, biografie e gialli. È stata anche
una delle rare tiratrici in Inghilterra, e qui la
vediamo durante una battuta di caccia organizzata
da Lord Lambton nella regione del Northumberland.
Passeggiando con lei c’è il pittore Lucian
Freud, il cui nonno viennese, Sigmund, pioniere
della psicoanalisi, sarebbe rimasto
meravigliato dalla sua straordinaria carriera
nell’arte e nella società britannica.
La sua pittura, largamente acclamata, ha radici
nel realismo inglese e nell’Espressionismo e
Nuova Obiettività tedeschi.
I suoi ritratti e nudi, autoritratti inclusi, dimostrano
sfacciatamente ogni difetto della carne,
verruche, cedimenti, vene varicose. I suoi soggetti
vanno da travestiti ai duchi. Anche se non
proprio nella tradizione del ritrattista di moda,
a Freud è stato chiesto di ritrarre la Regina. La
corona è venuta bene, la faccia riconoscibile
anche se impastata e grumosa e piuttosto
abbattuta. Le sue abili raffigurazioni di nature
morte sono più spassionate.

Antonia, then Fraser, now Pinter, was born into
the Pakenham dynasty of writers and is the
distinguished author of histories, biographies
and thrillers. She has also been one of the few
women guns in England, as seen during a shoot
organized by Lord Lambton in Northumberland.
Strolling with her is the painter, Lucian Freud,
whose Viennese grandfather, Sigmund, pioneer of
psychoanalysis, would have been amazed by his
extraordinary career in art and Britannic life.
His widely acclaimed painting has its roots in
English realism and German Expressionism and
the New Objectivity.
His portraits and nudes, including his selfportrait,
unabashedly show all the defects of the
flesh, warts, sag, varicose veins and all. The
sitters range from female impersonators to dukes.
Though not exactly the fashionable portrait
painter of tradition, he was asked to paint the
Queen. The crown came out well, her face
recognizable though lumpily impastoed and
dispirited. His skilful still-lives are more
dispassionate.

Montagu and Lady Lambton.
