Toti Scialoja, uomo di cultura per eccellenza,
iniziò la sua carriera artistica come scrittore e
critico, diventando successivamente un notevole
pittore astratto, in linea con la scuola
Newyorkese della “action painting”.
Per tutta la vita, comunque, la vena letteraria
rimase una costante, e pubblicò libri di poesie
con affascinanti illustrazioni degli animali
protagonisti delle sue liriche. Era in contatto
con le personalità di spicco artistiche e letterarie
sulle due sponde dell’Atlantico - DeKooning
a New York e Pasolini a Roma, tra i tanti –
e la sua corrispondenza con loro e molti loro
lavori sono conservati nella sede della Fondazione
Toti Scialoja.
Qui lo vediamo mentre sfoglia un rispettabile
quotidiano sull’Isola Tiberina.

Toti Scialoja, the cultivated man par excellence,
started his career in the arts as a writer and
critic, and then became a notable painter of
abstractions in line with the “action painting” of
the New York School.
Throughout his life, however, the literary bent
remained a constant, and he published
numerous volumes of poetry with engaging
“realistic” illustrations of the animal
protagonists of his lyrics.
He was in touch with the major figures in the arts
and letters on both sides of the Atlantic –
DeKooning in New York and Pasolini in Rome, for
instance – and his correspondence with them
and many of their works are preserved in the
headquarters of the Toti Scialoja Foundation.
Here he is seen, in the middle of Tiber island,
