8. STORICO DELL’ARTE DINAMICO
Storico dell’arte eccelso, riconosciuto a livello
internazionale per i suoi numerosi ed eruditi
scritti, a cominciare dai cataloghi delle gallerie
Spada e Pallavicini, Federico Zeri - oltre alla
carriera istituzionale in Italia, culminata nella
vicepresidenza del Consiglio Nazionale per i
Beni Culturali, - è stato anche consulente della
Fondazione Getty in California e accademico
di Francia.
Qui Zeri è ritratto alla scrivania, nella sua casa
di Mentana, appena fuori Roma, dove raccolse
una vasta biblioteca ed una fototeca d’arte,
nonché la sua collezione di dipinti e sculture.
Alla sua morte, nel 1998 all’età di settantasette
anni, i suoi archivi furono destinati all’Università
di Bologna, in barba alle sue radici
romane, perché era deluso e apertamente critico
nei confronti della burocrazia statale. Egli
era del resto diventato un personaggio di spicco
in programmi televisivi dove appariva in
caftano di damasco e derideva con grande
dinamismo le pretese di personalità del
mondo dell’arte che non rispettava.

DYNAMIC ART HISTORIAN
Internationally recognized as a major art
historian for his extensive scholarly writings,
beginning with the catalogs of the Galleria Spada
and the Galleria Pallavicini, Federico Zeri was
also an adviser to the Getty Foundation in
California and a member of the French Academy.
Not to mention his career in the Italian fine arts
administration, culminating in the vice
presidency of the National Council for the
Cultural Heritage.
He is seen at his desk, at home in Mentana, on
the outskirts of Rome, where he housed his vast
library and arts photo archive, as well as his
collection of paintings and sculptures. At his
death in 1998, at the age of seventy-seven, his
papers went to the University of Bologna, in
defiance of his Roman roots, as he was
outspokenly critical of the national bureaucracy.
In fact he had become a striking figure in
television talk shows where he would appear in a
damask caftan and dynamically deride the
pretensions of figures in the art world whom he
did not respect.
