3. MOTORI D’ANNATA<br />
Amichevoli poliziotti stradali si sono fermati<br />
per dare indicazioni e fare due chiacchiere. Le<br />
macchine erano scarse sulle strade della Sicilia,<br />
nel 1950. Nell’isola impoverita che ancora<br />
non si era ripresa dalla guerra, una Fiat Balilla<br />
Supersport argentea, foderata in cuoio giallo,<br />
anche se antiquata, appariva lussuosa e irradiava<br />
fascino.<br />
L’autore faceva da autista a Marjorie Collins<br />
durante un giro delle case, strade, ponti e<br />
dighe che lei era stata commissionata a fotografare<br />
per documentare le realizzazioni del<br />
Piano Marshall, il programma americano lanciato<br />
per aiutare l’Europa, devastata dalla<br />
guerra, a risorgere.<br />

VINTAGE VEHICLES<br />
Friendly highway policemen stopped to chat and<br />
give directions. There were few cars on the roads<br />
in Sicily in 1950 and on the impoverished island,<br />
not yet recovered from the war, a silver Fiat<br />
Balilla Supersport upholstered in yellow leather,<br />
though superannuated, appeared luxurious and<br />
glamorous.<br />
The author was driving Marjorie Collins on a tour<br />
of the housing, roads, bridges and dams she had<br />
been commissioned to photograph as<br />
achievements of the Marshall Plan, the American<br />
program launched to put war-torn Europe back<br />
on its feet.<br />
