1. L’AMERICA LATINA IN PERSONA
La Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi di Bernini in
piazza Navona a Roma, è un grandioso monumento-programma
barocco impregnato dallo
spirito della Controriforma.
La figura barbara nella foto rappresenta il Rio
della Plata e di conseguenza sta per le Americhe
o almeno l’America cattolica. Le altre tre
statue personificano il Danubio, il Nilo e il
Gange, ovvero l’Europa, l’Africa e l’Asia. Il
numero quattro, simbolicamente, è ricollegabile
ai quattro fiumi del paradiso ed ai quattro
dell’inferno.
La figura del Rio della Plata tende la sua mano
in alto in un gesto di ammirazione verso il
grande obelisco egizio che si erge come per
magia su una grotta aperta. Come le altre personificazioni,
il Rio della Plata è evocato da un
ulteriore emblema sotto la grotta: un improbabile
armadillo.
La Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi ha sempre ispirato
aneddoti leggendari. Bernini, benchè
poco gradito a Innocenzo X Pamphilj, il papa
regnante, si aggiudicò la committenza per
costruire la fontana attraverso uno stratagemma:
infilò in casa della cognata del Papa un
grande modellino in argento che il Papa
avrebbe notato “per caso”.

LATIN AMERICA PERSONIFIED
Bernini’s great baroque Four Rivers Fountain in
Piazza Navona, Rome, is a program monument
imbued with the spirit of the Counter-Reformation.
The barbarous figure in the photograph represents
the River Plate and thus stands for the Americas
or at least Catholic America. Three other statues
personify the Danube, the Nile and the Ganges,
representing Europe, Africa and Asia, and the
symbolic number of four recalls the four rivers of
Paradise and the four rivers of Hell.
The River Plate figure holds up his hand in
admiration of the great Egyptian obelisk that
stands magically it seems on top of an open
grotto. Like the other personifications, the River
Plate has its further emblem, below in the grotto,
in an improbable armadillo.
The Four Rivers Fountain has always inspired
legendry. Bernini, though out of favor with
Innocent X Pamphilj, the reigning Pope, won the
commission by planting a large silver model in
the house of the pope’s sister-in-law where he
would happen on it “by chance”.
