47. CENCI E STRACCI DIVENTANO ARTE
in nord Africa dove prestava servizio come
dottore nell’esercito italiano e, prigioniero di
guerra, fu portato in Texas.
Dai suoi Sacchi
passò a lavori in legno e plastica bruciati,
all’avanguardia del mondo artistico
internazionale.
erano Capogrossi, Colla, Afro, Scialoja e
Melotti. Rimase comunque fedele alle sue
radici umbre, tornandoci regolarmente, specie
tabacchi.
RAGS AND TATTERS INTO ART
A war prisoner in Texas, having been captured in
North Africa where he was serving in the Medical
Corps of the Italian Army, Alberto Burri (1915-
1995) was a country doctor from the small town
of Città di Castello in Umbria. To wile away the
monotonous days of incarceration he painted the
landscapes around him, and on his return to
Italy decided that painting and sculpting were
his true vocation.
He set up a studio in Rome and developed his own
distinctive style of abstract compositions, with
rags and bits of sacking colored black and red,
which soon made him famous. From his Sacchi
he went on to scorched wood and plastic, metalplate,
clay and cellotex works that placed him in
the vanguard of the international art world.
Among the artists in Rome, his closest friends were
Capogrossi, Colla, Afro, Scialoja and Melotti. He
remained loyal to his Umbrian roots, however,
returning home regularly, especially for squirrel
shooting, and left a large number of his creations
to Città di Castello, now to be seen at the Palazzo
Albini and in a vast former tobacco shed.
