A lui si deve il grande merito della realizzazione della celebre
carta, intitolata Nuova Topografia di Roma e più nota come
Pianta Grande di Roma, opera che segna la storia della
cartografia italiana e traccia la strada ad una fortunata serie
di carte urbane delle maggiori capitali italiane, elevando al
rango di opera d’arte anche una sì sofisticata e pregevole
opera di scienza.
Nolli lavora alla realizzazione della carta per otto lunghi
anni, dal 1736 al 1744, e porta a compimento un’opera
che, oltre alla carta vera e propria, composta da 12 fogli
imperiali (cm 47x68,9), presenta un frontespizio, un
testo introduttivo di avviso al lettore, l’indice dei numeri
presenti nella pianta divisa per rioni, l’indice alfabetico,
pensato precipuamente per l’agevolazione del lettore nella
consultazione della mappa, una pianta piccola in un foglio
unico, realizzata in collaborazione con Giovanni Battista
Piranesi (1720 - 1778), ed una riedizione, sempre in un
foglio unico, della carta del Bufalini del 1551.
L’apparato è quindi pensato più con ispirazione alla forma
dell’atlante urbano che non come semplice carta murale
di grande formato, anche se, ovviamente, tale soluzione
non è affatto esclusa dal novero delle possibili fruizioni del
documento.
The whole text is therefore conceived more as an urban atlas,
then a wall-map of big dimensions (even if such a use of this
document can remain the first one).
In conclusion, the idea is: a scientific work, still encyclopaedic,
that at the same time could be also an artistic masterpiece.
From a scientific point of view, Nolli’s map is highly reputed for
the accuracy of its surveys and its graphical representation on a
scale of 1:3000 (approx.). Four cherubs topographers, sketched
at the corners of the map while working on a measurement
campaign with a metrical stick, a surveying chain, a plane table
with a simple back-sight and drawing compasses, are a way to
represent such the accuracy. Altogether with the representation
of river flows, vegetation, morphology, and planning structures,
we can find on the map also the correct position of churches,
stairs, courts, fountains, obelisks, columns, crosses and ancient
ruins from the past (with their names). Nolli was even able
to obtain a special permit from the Pope Benedict XIV as an
authorisation to enter every estate, private or not, every church
and closure monasteries in town.
From an artistic point of view, we have to notice how the beauty
of the whole work is related to the harmonisation of different
themes. In its ensemble, in order to enrich the already great
amount of informational contents of the work, allegorical,
graphical and architectonical themes are wisely introduced,
together with foreshortenings of the town, allegory of the
