Skiing around <strong>Merano</strong><br />
The Val senales/schnalstal glacier allows you to<br />
enjoy great skiiing almost the entire year. The cable<br />
car climbs to a dizzying 3,200 metres, and once you<br />
are there, the magnificent panorama dominated by<br />
majestic mountain peaks is breathtaking. <strong>Merano</strong>/<br />
Meran 2000 is the number one family skiing area; for<br />
many from <strong>Merano</strong>, it is the mountain where they put<br />
their ski boots on for the first time. Just a few kilometres<br />
from the spa town, <strong>Merano</strong> 2000 has eight ski<br />
lifts and 40 km of ski pistes. The Val d‘ultimo/ultental<br />
is one of the most natural, least polluted valleys in<br />
South Tyrol and for this reason, skiing here, surrounded<br />
by towering peaks of more than 3,000 metres, is<br />
an unforgettable experience. Cross-country skiers<br />
have a track that stretches for the entire length of the<br />
valley, while the ski tourers can make the most of this<br />
snow-covered, pristine environment. If you don’t like<br />
long treks to get to the nearest skilift, we might have<br />
monte san vigilio / vigiljoch<br />
found just the place for you. The small village of Plan/<br />
Pfelders, located in the Tessa natural park is completely<br />
closed to traffic. Monte san Vigilio/Vigiljoch<br />
above Lana is a place for the romantics amongst you<br />
because you can only get there by cable car; cars<br />
aren’t allowed. The first thing you see when you get<br />
out the cable car is the impressive, very particular site<br />
of the “vigilius mountain resort” Hotel, designed by<br />
South Tyrolean architect, Matteo Thun.<br />
