THAT KIND OF NIGHT
(1999)
ABOUT YOUR HANDS
(2002)
SHADOWS
(2002)
Secondo la scrittrice la poesia
nasce soltanto quando si
perde attraverso il lettore;
e tratta con le parole a
seconda di come lui le tratta,
a seconda di come il lettore
apre e chiude gli occhi.
Spesso la poesia è rattristata
dalle imperfezioni delle pause
e dalla povertà delle parole;
proprio come egli si rattrista
quando il tempo lo
abbandona alla grettezza.
La poesia non può esistere
senza il lettore che aiuta
la verità a sfuggire
da dentro di lui.
Senza il lettore
che è perseguitato da
fantasmi di momenti passati;
o senza il lettore che con una
piccola matita dipinge sulle
mani dell'artista ciò
che non merita.
La poesia è piccola senza
il lettore e inconcepibile
senza lo scrittore.
THAT KIND OF NIGHT
(1999)
ABOUT YOUR HANDS
(2002)
SHADOWS
(2002)
For the writer the poetry
is born only when she loses
herself through him;
and it negotiates with words
depending on how he
negotiates, on how the
reader opens and closes his
eyes. Many times it is
saddened by the
imperfections of the pauses
and the poverty of words;
just like the reader is
saddened when time
abandons him to pettiness.
Poetry cannot exist without
the reader who help truth
escape from within him.
Or without the reader
who is persecuted by ghosts
of moments past; or without
the reader who with a small
pencil, depict on the artist's
hands what you he doesn't
deserve. Poetry is small
without the reader and
inconceivable without
the writer.
“MARIA SANTANA
BAPTISTA”
PROSE
Pur essendo un'opera di
fantasia, il racconto si ispira
tuttavia al personaggio di
Maria Santana Baptista, che
riporta il protagonista ad un
paesaggio di memorie quasi
dimenticate di quando aveva
cinque anni.
Egli ricorda di come si
parlasse delle sue virtù e
fantasie, di come la gente
avesse sete di fatti e di
racconti, di come si volesse
riportare i vivi dalle tombe per
portarli al focolare o al desco
familiare.
This is a fictional narrative.
It is, however, inspired by the
figure of Maria Santana
Baptista, that takes the
character back to an almost
forgotten landscape of
memories as a five year old.
He remembers the talk about
her virtues and fantasies.
And there was a hunger for
the narration of facts, for
telling events, for bringing
back the dead from the
graveyards' tombs and taking
them to the fireplace or to
the kitchen table.
ALEAMANTES
(2004)
La mia opera, Aleamantes,
è una poesia su due amanti
i cui destini sono sballottati a
destra e a sinistra nelle mani
del destino. Due persone
si amano inevitabilmente, ma
le loro vite sono facilmente
soggette a situazioni
complesse nelle quali è facile
entrare ma non altrettanto
facile uscire. La fine della
poesia riecheggia l'inizio.
L'amore ritorna all'amore,
debole e scosso, ma con la
possibilità di un nuovo inizio.
ALEAMANTES
(2004)
My work, Aleamantes,
is a poem about two lovers
whose destinies are rocked
to and from in the hands of
chance. Two people love
each other inevitably but their
lives are easily subjected to
complex situations in which
its easy to enter but not
as easy to get away from.
The ending of the poem
echoes the beginning.
Love returns to love, weak
and shaken but where there
is a possibility of a new start.
La storia descrive due ragazzi
che hanno una percezione
della passione, che
incidentalmente si incontrano
in un giardino pubblico.
Solo una terza persona che li
vede, riesce realmente a dare
un significato a quello che
stanno facendo. Ma che
genere di significato?
L'appuntamento era a
Mr Bieberkopf era calmo.
Then -the time was 1 min.
LETTERE DA UNA CITTÀ
DI DESIDERIO
(2004)
Lettere da una città di
desiderio, non saprei cosa
dire, la mia lingua mi spinge
solo a virtuosismi se medito
su e l'abbraccio. Dirò
qualcosa in meno magari,
suggerendo che dietro
questa trilogia poetica c'è
ancora qualcosa che resta,
perchè nonostante ne sia il
fine, la parola non sutura mai
completamente il suo ricordo.
Ero in una stazione, notte,
un lampione mi accendeva.
Era solo un mulinello di
solitudine, come sempre.
E il desiderio ha qualcosa
a che fare con il sonno
profondo, forse una ricerca di
sovrapposizione tra sé e sé.
Il braccio storto, che tocca
il suo gomito.
LETTERE DA UNA CITTÀ
DI DESIDERIO
(2004)
“Lettere da una città di
desiderio” was written many
years ago under the street
lamp of a train station.
I felt on my skin the
presence of people coming
from my biography, and I
start writing looking at the
light flowing from the street
lamp, I imagined to write
some poem-letters to the
people who turned around
my presence before I noticed
their absence, a deep,
absolute absence that was
obstructing my life.
Nothing, I felt, more heavy
than absence of those who
never said anything, is for
that reason that I gave my
words, my sparkling words,
to the mouth of silent,
inconsistent, presences
of the past.
This is the shape of a
photography, perhaps black
and white, because any color
falls in its white while a black
pen is saying it.
Something in my past is
often looking for a desire,
I always been pronouncing
its sound, desire of a certain
body which had too much
flesh in its eyes, sometimes
it was my word, able to catch
its part of presence, in its
long long process. Mine.
TESTA DI RINOCERONTE
(2004)
Un giorno, mentre leggevo
“Il Soccombente” di Thomas
Bernhard, mi si bloccarono
il cuore e i polmoni.
Vidi il mio pseudo-amico
Rino, morto suicida una
settimana prima, che
preparava meticoloso la sua
morte annunciata. Anzi, vidi
tutto il contorno della vicenda
- il dolore di sua madre, le
sue abitudini, i precedenti
della storia - tranne l'atto
autolesionista in se stesso.
Quanto più mi spingevo
verso il punto clou della
TESTA DI RINOCERONTE
(2004)
One day, while I was reading
a book of Thomas Bernhard
entitled “Il Soccombente”,
my heart and my lugs froze.
I saw my pseudo - friend
Rino who killed himself one
week before, while he was
preparing with
meticulousness his
announced death. Not at all,
I saw the all outline of the
event - his mother's pain,
his habits, the record of the
story except for the
self-punishing action.
The more I arrived the
morte di Rino, tanto più la
scena tragica della scoperta
del corpo mi si allontanava
dal cervello.
Non riuscivo a guardare.
Rimasi per qualche secondo
a fissare il vuoto. Potevo
vomitare, piangere o pregare.
Invece scrissi. È per questo
che Testa di rinoceronte
tenta di essere il documento
di una passione, anzi di tutte
le passioni.
La paura - del narratore e del
soggetto - la comunicazione -
o meglio la mancanza di essa
- l'amore - del narratore verso
il suicida, del narratore verso
culminating point of the
Rino's death, the more
I moved away from my head
the tragic scene when his
body was found.
I was not able to see.
I stared for few seconds
into space.
I could vomit, cry or
pray but, on the contrary
I decided to write.
For this reason, Testa di
rinoceronte tries to be the
document of a passion,
or rather of all passions.
The fear - of the writer
and of the subject -
the communication -
il fidanzato Piero,
di Piero verso il suo cane,
del suicida verso la vita -
la tentazione, l'ideale del
suicidio stesso, il conflitto
tra la vita e la morte.
Testa di rinoceronte
è il racconto di una giovane
donna incantata di fronte
alla rinuncia più totale;
è un tentativo di esternare
quali possano essere le
emozioni che un individuo
vivente prova nell'apprendere
la morte.
Questo racconto è lo
sgomento, la refrattarietà
a capire, la voglia sfrenata
or better the lack of it -
the love - of the writer
toward the suicide, of the
writer toward her boyfriend
Piero, of Piero toward his
dog, of the suicide toward
life - the temptation, the ideal
of suicide, the conflict
between life and death.
“Testa di rinoceronte” is the
story of a young woman who
is enchanted by the total
sacrifice; it is an attempt to
express the emotions that a
man feel about death.
This story represents the
consternation, the
refractoriness to understand,
di vita e l'attrazione
incontrastabile verso
la morte.
Tormento, pena, istantanea
e violenta, patimento e
rabbia, ironia e rancore.
Questo racconto è una
miscellanea di sogno e realtà,
ovvero il racconto puntuale
del reale che, oltre una certa
soglia, non basta più a
rivelare se stesso e si serve
di un film - o più di una
visione - per soccorrere
l'essere umano.
Esterrefatto, mutilato, offeso,
nell'apprendere la propria
inevitabile precarietà.
the unbounded will of life
and the indisputable
attraction toward death.
Torment, instantaneous
and violent pain, suffering,
rage irony and resentment.
This story is a miscellaneous
of dream and reality, or the
accurate story of the real life
that, besides a certain
threshold, is not able to
reveal itself and it uses a
film - o more than a vision -
to help the human being.
When he knows his
unavoidable precariousness,
he is amazed, mutilated
and offended.
SETTE RACCONTI
(2002)
Sette racconti. Sette donne.
Voglia d'amore, più o meno
apparente in tutti i testi; ora
diretta, espressa in maniera
corporea, ora indiretta, con
finalità spirituali; o perfino
sotto forma di rilascio
morboso di emozioni
adolescenziali represse.
Le eroine sono singolari,
ciascuna a suo modo:
un'aspirante amante, una
lunatica, una donna morta,
una vera amante, una
fantasia, una donna in lutto
e un’opinionista.
Questa collezione è una
pietra tombale dall'aspetto
piuttosto artistico su un
intero periodo di vita.
Un tentativo di riottenere
le loro esperienze, di vederle
sotto una luce più sobria.
Un tentativo di spiegare,
di autogiustificarsi.
La mitificazione di una realtà
comune con l'ulteriore
motivo nascosto di questa
realtà che acquisisce
l'incantevole sfumatura
di un mito.
Tutti e sette i racconti sono
stati scritti nella primavera
del 2002, un periodo che
sembra all'artista così
distante da rendergli i testi
quasi alieni; o lui aliena
The heroines are singular,
each in her own way: an
aspiring mistress, a lunatic,
a dead woman, a true
mistress, a fantasy, a woman
in mourning and a debater.
This collection is a rather
artistic gravestone on an
entire life period. An attempt
to regain their experiences
and view them in a more
sober light, an attempt to
explain and self-justify.
The mythification of a
common reality with the
hidden ulterior motive
of this reality acquiring
the enchanting nuance
of a myth.
All seven short stories were
written in Spring 2002,
at a time which seems so
distant to the artist, as to
render these texts almost
foreign to him; or render
himself foreign towards
the texts.
(2004)
(estratto)
Era quasi finita… tutto, ogni
cosa o era in fiamme o era
esplosa. Non sarebbe rimasto
nulla. Niente cani, né gatti.
Niente negozi aperti o treni in
movimento. Forse qualche
addobbo natalizio avrebbe
continuato a luccicare per un
po' e poi si sarebbe spento.
Lei si stava chiedendo il
senso di quella guerra.
Sarebbe stata l'ultima […].
In volo, libera, nel vuoto,
nell'aria, come un angelo
ubriaco chiuse gli occhi
e si schiantò a terra… fu un
attimo. Il rumore della caduta
fu coperto dalle esplosioni,
dagli spari di quegli stronzi.
E lei era finita così, in
silenzio. Come tutte le volte
che aveva pianto o urlato
contro a un cuscino,
e nessuno se n'era
accorto […].
L'unica cosa buona che
posso fare è farla tendere
all'infinito, fermarla in queste
righe…Così lei ci sarà per
un'impronta. E ora, se mi
permettete, la seguo.
Le stringerò la mano forte
forte, sarò su di lei a
(FREE FALLING IN G7)
(2004)
(abstract)
It was nearly over…all, every
single thing was in flames or
exploded. There would have
remained nothing left. No
dogs, nor cats. No open
stores or trains in motion.
Maybe some Christmas
decoration would have kept
on sparkling for a while and
then it would have turned off.
She was wondering the
sense of that war. It would
have been the last […].
Flying, free, into emptiness,
in the air, like a drunken angel
she closed her eyes and
crashed on the ground…it
was a moment. The noise of
her fall was covered by the
explosions, by the shots of
those bastards. And she was
ended like that, silently. Just
like all the times she had
been crying or screaming
against a pillow, and no one
noticed it […].
The only good thing I can do
is to make her tend to
infinity, fix her into these
lines…so she will be there
forever. There will always be
a trace, a sign, a print by her.
And now, if you let me, I'm
going to follow her. I will hold
her hand so tight, I'll be on
her to protect her from the
light of the bastard day, from
the bastard eyes of those
soldiers. I will jump down
from up here. It's cold. I will
see the stars that she has
seen, too. The last delicious
thing on which she put her
eyes on.
Partendo da un'ispirazione
la percezione della realtà.
Per colpa di un piccolo
ministro della chiesa viene
sconvolta. Il sacro e il profano
momenti della vita di Cristo
Because of a small square of
primo descrive un viaggio
PASSIONE: SCAMBIO
Il secondo narra
PASSIONE:
L'ultimo, omonimo dell'opera,
è tratto da La mia vita
L'INTRUSO
(2004)
L'INTRUSO è la storia
di un legame che si trascina
egoisticamente; è
un'interpretazione insolita
di quanto può verificarsi alla
conclusione di una relazione
sentimentale. Nel racconto
si è voluto giocare a
concretizzare quella
sensazione di presenza che
ogni grande passione lascia
dietro di sé. Similmente allo
stevensoniano Dr. Jekyll e
Mr. Hyde dove il lato
aggressivo del protagonista
si umanizza assumendo
sembianze concrete, anche
qui si è scelto di sublimare
e, quindi, dare un volto,
una corporatura, una capacità
d'azione, alla protesta di un
amante che non si rassegna.
Un altro obiettivo è stato
quello di illustrare, attraverso
una cornice pressoché
realistica, lo svolgersi di un
avvenimento incredibile che
tuttavia il lettore non
riconoscerà come estraneo.
L'INTRUSO è, infine,
un invito a non sottovalutare
le sensazioni, ad esserne
partecipi, a tollerarne i
dissesti e gli sconvolgimenti.
In breve, il racconto esorta a
vivere le emozioni come un
qualsiasi altro fenomeno della
vita quotidiana, dando loro
il giusto peso; d'altra parte,
si sa, come suggerisce la
Volpe al Piccolo Principe:
l'essenziale è invisibile agli
occhi. Francesca Piccolo.
THE INTRUDER
(2004)
THE INTRUDER is the story
of a tie that drags on
selfishly; it's an unusual
interpretation of what may
happen when a love affair
ends. My intention in this
novel was to express the
sensation of presence that
every great passion leaves
in the heart. Drawing from
the stevensonian Dr. Jekyll
and Mr. Hyde, where the
aggressive side of the
protagonist humanizes,
assuming concrete looks,
even in this case I chose to
sublimate, to give features,
body and action, to the
protest of a lover who can't
resign himself. My purpose
was also to show, in a quite
realistic frame, the
development of an
unbelievable event that
nevertheless will be familiar
to the reader. Finally, THE
INTRUDER suggests not to
undervalue sensations,
sharing them up to tolerate
eventual troubles and upsets.
Shortly, the novel states
to give the right importance
to the emotions because,
like the Fox said to the Little
Prince, what is essential
is invisible to the eye.
I NOMI DI MARIA
(2005)
Due note sul racconto.
Maria è una piccola donna
con un nome importante.
Ha trent'anni e la notizia la
coglie una sera di luglio.
La chiamano in tanti modi
e rischia di perdersi, sospesa
tra passioni e paure.
L'ho rubata qua e là da certe
donne a cui sono legato
THE NAMES OF MARIA
(2005)
A brief note on the story.
Maria is a tiny woman
carrying a significant name.
She's thirty and the news is
broken to her on a July
evening. She's called many
different names and risks
losing herself as she hangs
between passions and fears.
The story was picked here
and there from a number
of women I am very
attached to and from their
INCONSAPEVOLI
ATTRAVERSAMENTI
(2004)
Inconsapevoli attraversamenti
è un racconto lungo.
La sua stesura è incentrata
sul desiderio di scrivere una
storia nella quale protagonisti
differenti possano incrociarsi
senza conoscersi mai.
La narrazione quindi è
caratterizzata da tre storie
completamente autonome
che tuttavia hanno in comune
la dimensione spaziotemporale
nella quale si
svolgono. Una città,
sormontata da una collina;
la pioggia torrenziale,
poi il silenzio assoluto prima
di un terremoto che scuote
la realtà fin nelle sue
fondamenta: queste
le coordinate che
caratterizzano le vicende
dei tre protagonisti.
Altro elemento essenziale
del racconto è la dimensione
onirica: niente ha più contatto
con la realtà delle cose.
I protagonisti sono paradossi
e vivono situazioni
paradossali. Sono metafore
e vivono e si esprimono
attraverso metafore.
Il ragazzo che voleva
dipingere una parete di
azzurro, la fioraia sonnambula,
lo scienziato senza memoria:
tre storie completamente
differenti e che tuttavia
si intersecano senza
consapevolezza.
INCONSAPEVOLI
ATTRAVERSAMENTI
(2004)
Inconsapevoli attraversamenti
is a long short story.
It is centered on the desire to
tell a story in which different
characters cross one
another's path without ever
getting to know each other.
The narration therefore
unfolds through three
completely autonomous
stories which nonetheless
are set in the same
time-space dimension.
A city adjacent to a hill;
the pouring rain, and the
absolute silence before the
earthquake which shakes
reality deep down at its
foundations: these are the
coordinates which describe
the incidents of the three
characters.
Another crucial element
of this narrative is the dream
dimension: nothing is in
contact with the reality of
things. The characters are
paradoxes and live
inconsistent situations.
They are metaphors and live
and express themselves
through metaphors.
The young man who wanted
to paint his wall sky blue,
the sleep-walking flower
seller, the scientist without
memory: three completely
different stories
crossing obliviously.
Nei giorni in cui già tutto era
deciso mi sono perso nella
pace del tuo odore, sulla tua
pelle sconfinata dove, rapito
esploratore alla deriva,
chiedevo solo di poter vagare
per scommessa ottantamila
giorni senza posa. La luna poi
è tramontata piano e le
stagioni furibonde sono
calate su di me come funesti
cavalieri di ventura muti in
attesa di uno spiraglio. Alla
fine il profumo che ho di te lo
seguo nella casualità dei miei
ORO
(2004)
Il tuo è un oro imperfetto e
non lo voglio oro bizantino e
alchemico coperto di
geroglifici indistinti che
attaccano la pelle con astuzia
e sotterfugi. A costo di
compromettere i miei occhi
lo chiuderò in crisalidi di vetro
per poterne osservare il suo
FINE
(2004)
Brucerò i tuoi regali e i tuoi
pozzanghera impasterò la
cenere e farò un pane da
scordare per tre notti dentro
un forno rovente girone di
mattoni per carbonizzarlo e
mischiare le sue polveri col
nero che cade dai camini e
con l'umido e lo sporco di
cantine. Quel grumo lo
getterò ai cani del vulcano
In the days when anything
myself in the peace of your
wander at stake eighty
thousand days with no rest.
Then the moon has slowly
set and the raging seasons
went down on me like baleful
horsemen of fortune dumb
awaiting a gleam. In the end
the perfume I got from you I
follow it in the casualness of
my memories. And the habit
is turning to my vest.
ORO
FINE
I will burn your gifts and your
I'll knead the ash and make a
bread to forget three nights
into an oven scorching circle
of bricks to char it and blend
its dusts with the black that
fall down from the chimneys
volcano upsetting it with
fangs and barks
Il gioco sulla grandezza
e le serie di caratteri,
le indicazioni di tipo scenico
del corpo, del desiderio,
della violenza, della
femminilità, del pudore
Di sé e degli altri, infine.
Tutto è importante.
Perché, per Marie-Céline,
l'intimo non si accontenta né
del lirismo né del narcisismo.
Perché, nel suo lavoro
quotidiano, nelle sue raccolte
la scrittura poetica è prima
di tutto questa passione della
Then comes the phase
sculpts her words,
recomposes and/or cuts out
phrases, assembles,
juxtaposes, separates…
down to the construction
of the texts fashioned by the
jubilation of language.
Freed from the constraints
of narration, the words take
on depth and draw out the
rhythms of their visual layout.
The play on typefaces and
their size, the stage-like
indications (lighting,
cuts, pauses render visible
the intimate, the body,
desire, violence, femininity,
shame and shamelessness.
One's own and the others'.
Everything is important.
Because for Marie-Céline,
intimacy will not stand for
Because in her daily work,
in her collected texts
(“Encore”, “Monsieur”),
poetic writing is first and
infinite freedom of meaning,
It is also and above all a
passion for sincerity.
In discussione è solo
creativa è un tipo di
semplicità che può essere
INSULT TO INJURY (2004)
The authentic urban poetry
can be recognized, among
other things, by the fact that
one does not feel a need to,
without fail, call it city poetry.
It is not persistence on the
city pay-sage but lightness
caused by authentic state of
a city, which makes Marija
Stojanovic's ´
poetry
authentically urban. What is
being discussed is the only
accurate ambition when
dealing with literature -
devoted subordination to
literature itself. The result of
this creative attitude maturity
is a type of simplicity that
can be experienced as
illusory ease of acceptance
Released from “superfluous
actions”, the poem dynamics
is based on where it belongs
- on variable areas of
individual sensations.
Strengthening the position of
her own voice, from the
beginning this poet has an
expert usage of that “self”
seeing it as the
PER LA SAGGEZZA
(2004)
NOTTE IMPREPARATA
(2004)
LUCE NEL TUO CORTILE
(PAROLE DI ARNALDO)
(2004)
Ho composto le poesie scelte
per questa Biennale nel
periodo marzo-agosto 2004.
Avendo sviluppato le mie
capacità poetiche da allora
e avendole lette di nuovo mi
sono accorta che avevano
degli errori e così le ho
leggermente modificate, ma
la traduzione è stata già
mandata a Napoli e quindi
non posso modificare la
forma in cui verranno
presentate. Due delle poesie
sono sulla passione amorosa
non corrisposta mentre la
terza (“Luce nel tuo cortile”)
è dedicata ad Arnoldo Trojani,
un italiano che visse, lavorò
e morì a Salonicco.
Permettetemi infine qualche
verso del mio poeta italiano
preferito, Giuseppe Ungaretti:
Vi arriva il poeta / e poi torna
alla luce / con i suoi canti/
e gli disperde. Di questa
poesia / mi resta / quel nulla /
d'inesauribile segreto
LIGHT IN YOUR YARD
(PAROLE DI ARNALDO)
(2004)
The poems selected for this
Biennale occurred to me
during the period March-
August 2004.
Developing my poetic skills
since then and reading them
again, I noticed they had
faults so I changed them a
bit, but since the translation
has already been sent to
Naples I can’t change the
form they’ll be presented.
Two of the poems are about
unfulfilled love passion and
the third (“Light in your
yard”) is dedicated to Arnaldo
Trojani, an Italian who lived,
worked and died in
Thessaloniki.
Allow me some verse by my
favorite Italian poet G.
Ungaretti:
Vi arriva il poeta /e poi torna
alla luce/ con i suoi canti/ e gli
disperde. Di questa poesia/
mi resta/ quel nulla/
d’inesauribile segreto
