La straordinaria avventura del
Kazakhstan
familiare. I nostri anni Cinquanta.
a interpretarli.
doverosamente zdanoviani possono bastare a fermare.
4
piani quinquennali dettati dal Cremlino imponevano scelte
fatte all’interno d’un sistema rigidamente centralizzato, dipendente
nascendo, lentamente.
È stato un percorso aspro, anche drammatico. All’improvviso,
occidentali a svolgere attività
di esplorazione e produzione in Kazakhstan.
Oggi la Società è presente in
due importanti progetti upstream: Karachaganak
e North Caspian Sea.
KARACHAGANAK
È il progetto relativo all’ulteriore sviluppo
del giacimento a olio, gas e condensati,
già operativo dagli anni Ottanta. Il giacimento
è situato nel nord-ovest del paese.
Eni, con una quota del 32,5%, è cooperatore
insieme alla British Gas.
L’accordo di production sharing prevede lo
sviluppo del giacimento per 40 anni da
parte del consorzio internazionale, costituito
da quattro compagnie: Eni, British
Gas, ChevronTexaco e Lukoil.
cubi all’anno, 6,6 dei quali vengono reiniettati
nel giacimento dall’Unità 2 a pressioni
superiori alle 500 atmosfere.
NORTH CASPIAN SEA
È il progetto relativo all’esplorazione e sviluppo
scoperti negli ultimi trent’anni.
giorno. Si prevede di reiniettare gran parte
del gas acido, associato alla produzione di
olio in giacimento riducendo in tal modo la
produzione di zolfo.
Nell’area contrattuale del North Caspian
Sea PSA, sono presenti
oltre a Kashagan altre
strutture di grande potenziale
attualmente in fase
“appraisal”, quali Kalamkas,
Aktote e Kairan.
“autoidentificazione nazionale”. Su una
parete di quest’ultima tappa della risalita,
un lungo pannello espone le bandierine
dei paesi che hanno riconosciuto il nuovo
Kazakhstan, aprendo relazioni diplomatiche
con Almaty: sono più di 150 bandiere,
l’ordine dell’esposizione segue semplicemente
ogni tesoro immaginabile, uranio, ferro, tungsteno,
bauxite, petrolio.
corner of the park, you will find that all the couples inevitably
repeat the same gestures and pictures.
There are rituals which fix history and time in memory like no
official act ever could. Kazakhstan today is the small and happy
tale of these newly weds, in a world stretched between past and
future, where the iteration of time-worn gestures takes place in a
context - the “Americanisation” of the cream limousine, digital
cameras and flashes used as in a film, the exhibition of boutique
clothes – which would be out of place if not for the artlessness
people display in their roles. Renting that car costs 100 dollars a
day; 100 dollars are nearly a workman’s basic wage, but there are
already two white limousines providing this service in Almaty, and
HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT. The Caspian Sea, man-made islands for
offshore well drilling. Owing to prohibitive weather conditions in winter
months it was necessary to build barriers to protect facilities from
heaping up ice.
Eni was among the first western oil companies to undertake gas and oil
exploration and production, engineering and construction activities and
oil product distribution in Kazakhstan.
they are highly requested, you have to wait. The new economic
happiness imposes social duties which no-one wants to resist to.
The country is on the verge of a boom and this hope opening out
onto the future brings in foreign forms of behaviour, needs and
expectations which consumer society digested half a century ago.
They are just chasing time which had escaped in forced
collectivisation; the new time runs faster and is already dreaming
of that to come.
The bronze soldiers are the monument to a past whose slow
escape from the collective memory neither the powerful metal of
heroes from a distant war nor their rigorously zhdanovian muscles
can stop. The ritual of the pix celebrates the last remnants of an
official history which has lost all semantic value today (“everybody
does it”, couples say, indifferent to the heroes). Now oil has
arrived, the world has changed.
Of course, petroleum was already there, when Kazakhstan was
one of the republics of the Soviet empire and five year plans
dictated by the Kremlin imposed choices made inside a rigidly
centralised system, dependent on the will and interests of
Moscow. Then, Kazakhstan was first of all “the country of virgin
lands”, as Nikita Khrushchev had described it, an immense
granary which would supposedly have covered the food needs of
(“The End of Oil”), Paul Roberts liquida in due righe questa
straordinaria avventura: “Quando le compagnie petrolifere
internazionali hanno potuto mettere piede in
Kazakhstan, hanno trovato Kashagan in appena trentasei
minuti”.
The two projects
Eni was among the first western oil
companies to undertake exploration
and production activities in
Kazakhstan. Today it is engaged in two
major upstream projects: Karachaganak
and North Caspian Sea.
KARACHAGANAK
This project concerns the further
development of the oil, gas and
condensate Karachaganak deposit,
situated in North West Kazakhstan and
operational since the 80s.
Eni, with a 32.5 pc stake, is co-operator
along with British Gas.
The production sharing agreement lays
out the development for 40 years by an
international consortium, made up of four
companies: Eni, British Gas,
ChevronTexaco and Lukoil.
In the second development stage, the
Consortium has set up a treatment plant
(KPC), a gas reinjection plant (Unit 2) and
a 636-km oil pipeline linking
Karachaganak to Atyrau, on the Caspian
Sea coast in northern Kazakhstan. In
Atyrau this oil duct links up to the CPC
(Caspian Pipeline Consortium) pipeline,
peoples locked inside the frontiers of USSR. Travellers crossing
today the infinite geography of Kazakhstan finds ruins everywhere
of that time – which seems a century away and instead is just
more than a decade ago –, remnants abandoned to the dust of
time: huge tractors with no engine any more, old threshers rusting
to bits on the edge of a collective farm imploded with the last
breath of soviet communism, or the enormous machinery of some
idle factory, left to rot in the corrosion like exhibits of industrial
which connects the Caspian Sea with the
Novorossisk terminal on the Black Sea.
Thanks to this connection, KPC oil
Total output at Karachaganak will rise to
380.000 barrels a day by yearend, with
Eni’s share at 115,000 boe a day. KPC
(Karachaganak Processing Centre) has a
capacity of 150,000 barrels of liquids.
Karachaganak also produces 14.5 billion
cubic metres of gas per year, 6. 6 of
which is re-injected in the reservoir by
Unit 2 at a pressure of over 500
atmospheres.
NORTH CASPIAN SEA
This project is about the exploration and
development of an offshore area, in the
northern section of the Kazakhstan
Caspian Sea, south east of Atyrau.
The contract area covers 11 blocks for a
surface total of over 5,500 square kilometres
with a depth ranging from two to ten metres.
The project is carried out by a joint venture
including Eni (through Agip Caspian Sea B.V.
with a 16.67 percent stake), and six other
international oil companies. In February
2001, Eni was named sole operator in the
North Caspian Sea.
among the most advanced in the world.
The deposit, which holds recoverable
reserves of up to 13 billion barrels, is
among the largest discovered over the
last 30 years. The Kashagan development
plan was approved in February 2004. It
will be implemented in stages. During the
first one, currently underway, the field will
reach an output of 75,000 barrels of
crude a day by 2008, to gradually
increase up to 450,000 barrels by 2010.
Production will be expanded in the
following stages to a plateau of
1,200,000 barrels a day. A lot of the acid
gas associated with crude pumped at
Kashagan, is expected to be re-injected,
thus reducing the production of sulphur. In
the contract area of the North Caspian
Sea PSA, besides Kashagan, there are
other high-potential structures, currently in
the “appraisal” stage, such as Kalamkas,
Aktote and Kairan.
Only now is this society learning its own national identity, which
is not easy when all past history is a tale of open landscapes
and empty spaces that oriental knights –the Tartars, the
Mongols of Gengis Khan, the Huns of Attila – crossed to
conquer a world which knew no borders or limits. This cauldron
of peoples which the steppes devoured by the race of nomads
constantly stirred, gradually found stability over the last
centuries through a “Russification” process, integrating Slav
and Caucasian peoples. Only an epochal earthquake like the fall
of the Soviet empire could break that continuity fixed in time. In
that fall a world abruptly ended and another one is being born,
slowly.
It was a bitter process, often dramatic. Suddenly, technicians,
professionals, capitals, investments, the whole “nomenklatura”
which led the country, disappeared from the institutional body of
Kazakhstan in a flee towards Moscow. It was a real mass
migration. As in Chekhov a play, memory and reality measured
themselves in a painful tear imposed by that new era and
reconstruction exacted blood and tears. “It was better before”,
an old man says bitterly, sitting on a wooden bench of the
Karabatan village train station. A bunch of houses which trains
rarely stop for, whistling their salute before disappearing into the
horizon of the steppes. The old man shook his head and didn’t
even look at the escaping train. He thought of himself, his past,
but he didn’t realise the great amount of work going on around
him, the new tracks, the new station being built, the young
workers who were transforming the motionless silence of the
steppes.
Today the story of this nation long struggle to its future is proudly
recounted in the Almaty museum, in a journey which
If the true wealth of a country is a combination of three factors
(territory, population, resources), Kazakhstan has extraordinary
growth potential, for the vastness of a geography making it as big
as Western Europe, with a population of just 15 million
inhabitants and a land which, inside, holds all imaginable
treasures, uranium, iron, tungsten, bauxite, oil. In a world ever
more thirsty for alternative energy sources to oil flows from the
Gulf – as much bountiful as they are dangerously destabilized –
the Caspian basin today offers international markets with strongly
attractive prospects, in an area which maintains a reassuring
political balance even though, at its southern borders, the Afghan
war has opened a lasting crisis.
And in the Caspian, in the northern waters of this landlocked sea,
Kazakhstan has found its cornucopia. The Kashagan deposit
contains oil reserves which a prudent estimate values at 13
billion barrels, but a just a bit more optimistic calculation pushes
up to 23.6 billion barrels. “This is the most important oil
much more dramatic: the Kashagan field is situated in an area
where climate and the nature of the terrain have imposed
unprecedented techniques, challenged by the amazing gas
pressure and acid content of the petroleum that turned Kashagan
into a stimulating technological creativity test for the whole oil
industry in the world.
The Caspian, up there between the estuary of the Ural and the
delta of the Volga, in the silent and immobile solitude of a steppe
spreading out over an endless horizon, is a fascinating ecosystem
whose northern latitude dictates extreme conditions. And not just
because of high temperature swings, with summers at 40 and
winters at minus 30 degrees Centigrade. The waters in the
Northern portion of this landlocked sea are never more than 8-10
metres deep and often much shallower. Master of all off-shore
techniques, with platforms many miles off the coast, from the
North Sea to the Oceans of China and Africa, with deposits
thousands of feet below, the oil world found itself forced at
Kashagan to look at things differently, inventing a totally new
method, in extremely shallow waters and on a terrain hardly more
homogeneous than a swamp.
The solution which was found in the end had to dump the
consolidated platforms and replace them with small, artificial
islands, dotting the surface of the Caspian like tiny oases of rock
Eni’s Way
and metal arisen due to a sudden corrugation of nature. Seeing
them working today, in their daily routine, one can hardly figure the
problems they posed for developers. But the birth of those
‘islands’ was an extraordinarily complex industrial design also
because the landlocked sea forced machinery to be carried on
shallow keel barges down the Volga and the Don.
Then the rigid winter which takes hold at these latitudes from
October-November to March-April, freezes over the surface of the
sea and turns it into a polar ice pack, hindering all industrial
activity. And the freezing wind which roars in from Siberia, meeting
no obstacles on its course, violently hits at the water and the
growing ice pack with astounding results: it blows water away
making the see even shallower but worst of all it rolls giant ice
blocks southwards, which tend to threateningly pile up like small,
shifting mountains against the ‘islands’ downwind. The use of
barges sunk next to the islands like little containment dams with
a concave impact surface exploits the push from those enormous
blocks of ice and tends to pile them up and tip them over
backwards, so saving the ‘platforms’ of rock imposed on the sea.
It is quite an impressive sight, like a fascinatingly symbolic
sequence of the competition between industrial society and the
primary force of nature.
Out of this competition – which has now few other examples in a
citizens. Its training courses are focused on oil
activity.
last of the paradoxes which the oil world offers
the consumer society.
But the whole of Kazakhstan is living these
contradictions and has to cope with them. To
free oneself from past history and invent all of
a sudden a new history, is a challenge in which
a nation has to thoroughly size up the strength
of its spirit. The past is certainly that industrial
archaeology in ruins which travellers encounter
all over the country (the abandoned Soviet oil
wells, on the Tengiz coast, actual ecological
time bombs, also bear witness to a bitter end
of an era). But that past is above all the culture
of indifference, passivity, often idleness which
the old collectivist time instilled in daily habits.
Alexei and Ylenia, the newly weds from the
Park of Martyrs, are a workman and a
laboratory technician. They are two like many
others, in Kazakhstan. But wherever you go
and ask, investigate, interrogate – e.g. at the
training courses set up by Eni in Atyrau, or
among teams of technicians who have returned
to life the old soviet plants of Karachaganak –
the answers always include a strong dynamic
tension among the youngest, their evident
desire to catch the luck which is coming to
their country, brushing off – with application,
study and diligence – a certain ancient
laziness.
It is not a plain passage; the incrustations of old habits are
concrete forms which severely engage daily experience in this
new society.
Karachaganak, one of the largest oil and condensate fields in the
world, can perhaps be taken as the most effective symbolical
representation of this complex and articulated change from old
Moscow to abandon the field. The Kazakhstani management and
FOCUS
chiama Almaty) poggia tuttora solidamente sulle
radici della propria storia secolare. E in quelle radici
weekend consumato nelle vecchie abitudini. Simile
Kazakhstan deve sapersi muovere.
misura accettabile quel sottile gioco d’influenza
politica ed economica che Mosca vorrebbe continuare
a svolgervi, quasi come eredità naturale d’una
storia che fu prima zarista e poi sovietica. E
16
go.
d’attorno. Finiva, naturalmente, che la ragazza trionfava.
the green line of the horizon like a giant
monument to Soviet Kazakhstan’s
impotency. But the downfall of the
communist system, in the early 90s and
the new sovereign Kazakhstani will
opened the national market to Western
investments and the cutting edge
technologies those investments could
offer in the recovery of a plant which for
years had been practically abandoned to
its apparent uselessness. The 4.3 billion
Bg, has a 65 percent share of the
thousand technicians and workers –
mostly local – currently employed, it has been possible to extend
the range of exploitation. The Nuova Pignone turbines, of
absolute engineering avant-garde, could finally harness the power
of the gas, re-injecting it in the wells at the amazing pressure of
500 atmospheres. Today, Karachaganak is one of the biggest oil
processing centres in the world and on June 10 the first load of
89 thousand tons of crude for Eni was sent off to the Russian
terminal of Novorossysk (on the Black Sea). The cycle of the
“new” had broken the penalizing continuity of the past.
The new capital, Astana, is certainly the proud national symbol
of this new cycle. The old Alma Ata (which in Kazakhstani is
now called Almaty) still rests solidly on the roots of its ancient
history. And in those roots it finds a continuity which only time
can change, to the extent that the first flight on Monday
morning from Almaty to Astana is practically “sold out” for the
ranking officials, technicians and also ministers returning
way to the Brasilia project – with the
desire to move the internal frontiers of
the country and impress the strong
stamp of an also psychological break –
Astana is the daughter of this era, and
also of this latitude, cultural and political.
Its architecture does not contain the
charm of the open, imaginative, elliptical
stroke Oscar Niemeyer gave to his city in
the tropic dream of the 60s.
A new frontier needs to create strong
metaphors and symbols, to anchor
loyalty and participation in a changing
society. Astana gives it a try, with a
project which takes into account not only
internal frontiers but also the difficult
regional context in which the new
Kazakhstan must learn to move.
Kazakhstan today offers itself to be a
bridge between Europe and Asia, East
and West, also between Russia and
China, in the context of a long term
strategy, which plays on the rivalry
between its two powerful neighbours to
use every possible advantage. On the
horizon marked out by the wealth of the
new deposits, it especially aims at redesigning that subtle
game of political and economical influence which Moscow
would like to continue carrying out, almost like a natural
heritage of a history which was at first czarist and then
Soviet. And this re-balancing is expressed in a decided
attention for the flattery which an oil thirsty China is openly
addressing to the people of Kazakhstan. The “scientists” of
the two countries are working together to build the “Oil
pipeline of the century”, to take the wealth from underneath
the Caspian to the Celestial Empire (and Japan). And
Uzakbai Karabalin, the president of KazMunaiGas, does not
disguise his interest for this flattery “These projects must be
monitored very carefully. China will need millions of tons of
oil. We should not miss this unique opportunity”.
In Bautin, the small tip of a peninsula on the Caspian Sea,
supplies and communications centre for the Kashagan drilling
and construction operations, some time ago the minuscule
theatre of the village of Fort Scevchenko (about 1000
inhabitants) hosted a performance by a touring company. The
foreign traveller curiously joined locals. After the mayor’s
Soviet style introductory speech, finally actors began their
play. It told about a rebel daughter who loved rock music and
glamour clothes and had to pitch herself against the
conservative spirit around her. It was a metaphor on today’s
Kazakhstan. The public watched the comedy – which, amidst
equivocations and coups de theatre, had the pace of a
Neapolitan light opera – with big laughs, enjoying the
misadventures of the girl and her fight to change the mentality of
people around her. It naturally ended with a triumph for the girl.
CI RISIAMO!
e quello legato all’energia elettrica (olio combustibile e
no member of the cartel can really pump more oil that what
running regularly has been postponed indefinitely, whilst the
exploitation of fields which have been operating for decades
elsewhere in the world starts to feel the wear of time.
There is a need, therefore, to find a new road to cope with a
situation which appears no longer cyclical. If no significant
ENI SLURRY TECHNOLOGY. Est is a cutting edge process which
allows to convert heavy and non-conventional crudes into valued
distillates, doing away with residues almost completely. The Est
technology, experimented in EniTechnologie laboratories, will be tested in
a 1,200-barrel-a-day demo plant at the Taranto refinery.
must be found to live together with this essential source
which conditions the whole energy consumption line.
The most immediate and concrete answer would be to define
a technological package capable of working on different
levels to cool the final costs of energy on what seems to be
the most critical front today, that of supply, bringing in novel
criteria for the exploitation of what is available, by both
upgrading it and modifying the mix employed. This approach
becomes almost natural for an integrated company like Eni
which seeks the most adequate answers in its operating
lines. “It is a question of reconciling apparently conflicting
requirements”, said Luigi Patron, chairman of Snamprogetti
and Eni Chief Technology Officer, “i.e. to find out how to use
technologies capable of containing final energy prices both
on the immediate front of consumers and on that, more long
term, of an expanded economy where costs and benefits can
be consistent with orderly development”.
The starting project of Eni and Snamprogetti is of an
integrated technological package to address rising oil and
gas consumption on two distinct energy fronts:
transportation (petrol and diesel) and electricity (fuel oil and
natural gas). The main idea being, cutting fuel oil
consumption and expand that of gas to generate power and
the optimal re-conversion of fuel oil to produce light
products, such as gasolines and diesel oils.
The meeting point of these two production lines is a refining
technology called Est (Eni Slurry Technology) experimented
gas naturale).
leggeri, come benzine e gasoli.
In
leggeri.
finale in resa calorica nettamente superiore e, quindi,
EFFETTI POSITIVI.
già altamente integrati all’interno dell’Eni.
più a sud, dall’Africa all’intero Mediterraneo. “Questo è
Eni’s Way
in the laboratories of EniTecnologie and which will be tested
in a 1,200-barrels-a-day pilot plant at the Eni group Taranto
refinery. “One fact is enough to appreciate Est”, Patron
explained. “At the end of the conversion process, the residue
of a whole barrel of crude does not exceed one percent. This
means that light products, after the conversion, dominate
and fuel oil has virtually disappeared. On top of it, the
process is very highly flexible and you can have a high
quantity either of gasolines or diesel oils, depending on the
market”.
In other words, you have to counter the expensive barrel with
immediate savings, such as the conversion of oil to light
distillates. But it is not enough.
Out of three barrels of crude refined today you get two of
high added-value products, and one of a product which can
Eni’s Way
only be burned in a furnace to produce heat or electrical
kilowatt hours. But the Est technology (hydrogen in contact
with molybdenum catalyst) breaks this costly cycle. Oil taken
away from power production can be replaced with natural gas
which, as is known, has much higher final heat yield, and,
therefore, helps lower power generation costs. Not to
mention the positive environmental effects you achieve by
burning gas rather than fuel oil.
It is a route which may represent the natural evolution of a
production system where crude and gas are already highly
integrated at Eni; but – what matters most – where the new
refining technology from its very first applications, i.e. oil
conversion, meets a full justification in Eni group’s capability to
feed large quantities of natural gas to the market. Advancement
in the natural gas transportation network from fields even very
39
FRONTIERE - FRONTIERS
verso mercati lontani dai giacimenti.
via nave-rigassificazione giustifica ormai
una percorrenza totale di diecimila chilometri. Praticamente
a grandi e a grandissime profondità marine.
prodotti liquidi.
in liquidi.
Technology”. ■
Eni’s Way
far away from consumer areas is an
established fact with Eni, which is
active on this market with the large
gas pipelines from Russia to Europe,
from the North Sea southwards, from
Africa across Mediterranean. “This”,
said Luigi Patron, “is the other strong
point in the technological package we
are banking on. That is, our
experimented and cutting edge
capacity to transport natural gas
through big pipelines”.
To achieve new and more
convenient solutions, efforts are
being multiplied – with the direct
involvement of oil majors - to
further advance construction
technology, banking on the use of
special highly resistant materials,
so we can raise transport pressure
and as a result the amount of gas
transported. The time is not far
away when the distance limit within which gas can be
commercially transported by pipeline can be doubled from
3,000 to 6,000 kilometres.
In addition to these two lines, there is a third one where
Snamprogetti has piled up years of experience and refined
its know-how, that is natural gas transportation as LNG.
Compared to the first LNG plants of the 70s, which brought
on the market a more expensive gas than that carried by
pipe, today liquefying costs have been reduced to a third and
the capacity of a single production line has grown tenfold.
Significant reductions which have been passed on to
transportation and regasification costs. This made it
possible to further extend gas transportation distance to
reach markets far away from the production fields.
While also 6,000-km gas pipelines become commercially
viable, the liquefaction-transport by sea-regasification line is
today commercially viable even over a overall distance of
10,000 km.. In fact, distance is no longer a barrier for using
natural gas instead of oil. The Middle East, through
Eni’s Way
NUOVE STRATEGIE.
La domanda di petrolio
è in costante crescita
non solo per la richiesta
del mondo occidentale,
ma in particolare
per l’aumento dei consumi
di paesi quali Cina e India.
È necessario quindi
integrare sempre più
le diverse fonti energetiche
per affrontare questa realtà.
NEW STRATEGIES.
Oil demand is steadily rising
boosted not only by the
Western World but in
particolar by expanding
consumption in countries
like China and India. It is
therefore necessary to ever
more integrate the various
energy sources to cope with
this fact.
liquefaction and sea transport can supply, at a reasonable
cost, key markets such as the United States and Japan.
In 2002, 113 million tons of LNG were produced and
transported across the world. The total is expected to rise to
250 million tons by 2010. This will require investments
estimated at around 100 billion Euro over the next decade,
mostly to cope with the fast increasing demand of gas for
power generation.
The development of the Est technology, according to the
timetable Eni is implementing to bring in gas to replace
crude converted with ample flexibility in light products, is
also a strongly innovative approach compared with
experiments other major companies are carrying on in
refining. This choice moves along Eni’s traditional line often
setting out on a way of its own in technological development
and overcoming the perplexities of others in the trade. The
same went for gas pipelines laid at huge sea depths. The
same goes today with the challenge to convert natural gas
into liquid products.
The GTL (Gas to Liquids) process is part of projects
starting up both in the Middle East and in West Africa,
when large gas deposits are available. The ultimate aim is
to replace, wherever possible, liquids which today can be
extracted only from oil with gas-derived ones. But the path
is narrow in that direction. GTL technology has not solved a
basic problem yet, that of its real efficiency. Half the
energy originally present in the gas is absorbed by the gasto-liquids
process.
Why then – and this is what Snamprogetti is betting on –
shouldn’t we aim decisively for Est which can already “suck
in” thousands of barrels of fuel oil and turn them into higher
added-value products both for transportation and the
petrochemical industry in a broad sense? Snamprogetti
chairman Patron concluded: “The course we identified and
developed is a convincing one, and not only for us. It is
beginning to appear optimal also for producers laden with
very heavy crudes, of low value and harder to transform. I
am convinced our approach is one first big strep forward to
live with a barrel of crude ever more precious while waiting
for Gas to Liquids to achieve an efficiency somehow similar
to what we have tested with Eni Slurry Technology”. ■
Rosetta probe (named after the famous
Egyptian “stone” which helped unravel
the mystery of ancient hieroglyphics),
built by the European Space Agency,
with notable contributions from Italian
industry. Rosetta will take ten years to
wind up its mission. It is the time
needed to “hit” the cosmic target
hundreds of millions of kilometres away
from the Earth, the Churyumov-
Gerasimenko comet.
To hit the comet, the probe will circle
back three times close to the Earth and
travel once around Mars. This is
necessary for the probe to receive the
gravity boost and help limit fuel
consumption to a minimum. Then
Rosetta will remain “in hibernation” for
80 months. When it reaches the comet
in November 2014, Rosetta will release
a small landing module, equipped with a
shield to protect the lander from impact
with ice particles ejected from the
comet’s nucleus and which at that
speed have the same effect as a bullet
lander, called Philae (it got its name
from a 15-year-old student girl from
comet’s mane and cling on to the surface by means of anchoring
systems which will harpoon the comet’s nucleus the way a big cat
italiani in progetti così complessi, delicati e altamen-
e “scanzonati”.
Oltre a portare a Terra
È solo abituandosi a risolvere
oldest space bodies in our solar system. Almost certainly the
composition of these bodies is exactly the same as when they
were “born” some 4,600 million years ago. Therefore comets
contain information on the primordial state of matter and are a
sort of “archive” which we can consult in order to better
understand the origin of the Sun and the planets, including our own
Earth, whose oceans and atmosphere might have been formed
starting from elements which reached our planet by means of
impact with the comets. Many theories point to comets as the
“sowers” of life in the cosmos.
What do you think we may discover? It is necessary to drill the
surface of the comet to understand what materials the comet is
made of. Some scientists theorise that the impact with comets
containing complex organic molecules may have supplied the Earth
with the basic building bricks which life developed from. The
Rosetta probe, which has a total launch weight of 3,000 kilos, is
equipped with many instruments and devices which, as is the case
with most exploratory space satellites, make up a complex space
laboratory with highly sophisticated instruments, each having very
specific requirements of its own. Just consider, for example, that
the radio link device is to send and receive data by means of
equipment operating several million kilometres away from the Earth.
The role of Italian industry in
this mission. Several scientific
experiments to be carried out
on Rosetta are coordinated by
ASI, the Italian Space Agency,
and there is a lot of Italian
technology built into the
technical components aboard
Rosetta, such as the Virtis
optical infra-red spectrometer,
the Giada dust analyser and the
Tecnomare drill. The contribution made by Alenia Spazio is also
important. They were responsible for the assembly, integration
and testing of the satellite and the development of the probe
transponder.
How do foreign partners consider the presence of Italians in
such complex, delicate and highly sophisticated projects? The
Italian presence is definitely well regarded. At first the reputation
may linger on of the Italians as “creative” and “not very
scrupulous” people. However after the first meetings, when you
have been working shoulder to shoulder for some time, everybody
becomes aware what our engineers and physicists are worth.
More than once foreigners are struck by the Italian skill at
resolving “untractable” situations. Where there are tortuous
problems or fine theories stumbling in practice, it is often an
Italian stroke of genius which resolves the stalemate. Maybe we
are less methodical and rigorous than others but often our
temperament helps us to find ways out of patterns and schemes
where others end up getting trapped.
Many believe working on these projects is “waste” of time and
resources. This is not true. As well as bringing to Earth massive
quantities of “crude” scientific information for scientists to work
on, building these probes provides an excellent opportunity to
keep the brains of our engineers “in training”. It is only by getting
used to resolving “extraterrestrial” problems that we can learn to
be no longer afraid of “terrestrial” ones. Everybody stands to gain
from this. ■
their interaction with solar wind, include one quite new,
developed by Tecnomare. It is a unique drill having the task
of boring through the ground of the comet and disclose at
long last what these icy boulders wandering about the
cosmos are made of inside.
The drill created for Rosetta (which is the end result of
several projects which began in the Nineties) is the
condensation of all the expertise Tecnomare possesses in
the field of drilling and has deployed to solve countless
problems. The drill has a 10-kilo thrust capability, adjusted
to the harpoons which will secure Philae to the surface of
the Churyumov-Gerasimenko comet. Its miniaturised 10watt-powered
engine was designed to achieve the highest
performance with the lowest possible power consumption.
The drill tip was made to bore through materials of the
utmost hardness conceivable in a comet. All devices must
be able to work at temperatures as low as about minus
160 degrees centigrade, be as light as possible and
miniaturised to better co-exist with the other 10
instruments aboard the lander. They must as well be
Tecnomare, società di ingegneria
del gruppo Eni, rappresenta oggi
una realtà unica nel mercato di riferimento.
Sia per i livelli d’innovazione
tecnologica raggiunti, sia per il complesso
dei settori di attività in cui opera:
ingegneria di progetti di sviluppo per
l’upstream petrolifero, ingegneria di
esercizio e manutenzione di infrastrutture,
ingegneria e realizzazione di componenti
e sistemi robotici per ambienti
ostili, servizi di gestione integrata di salute,
sicurezza, ambiente e qualità.
L’eccellenza nella ricerca. Tecnomare
ha iniziato la propria attività nel 1971
come società di ricerca applicata, in
un’Italia fortemente proiettata verso la
crescita economica e produttiva, con la
missione di sviluppare e applicare industrialmente
nuove tecnologie marine. È
stata fra i primi soggetti in assoluto a
tradurre in innovazione gli specifici finanziamenti
statali gestiti dall’Imi (Istituto
mobiliare italiano).
La politica industriale nazionale e l’interesse
di Eni – azionista industriale di
maggioranza relativa –- per lo sviluppo
delle tecnologie offshore hanno creato
un ambito molto favorevole all’evoluzione
delle attività di ricerca della società,
come dimostra il suo curriculum vitae.
1973-1977. Nuove tecnologie sviluppate
da Tecnomare vengono applicate
per la prima volta alle quattro piattaforme
Agip nel campo di Loango (offshore
del Congo). Vengono realizzati interamente
da Tecnomare mezzi per l’interramento
progettazione.
SWACS (Subsea Wells Autonomous Control
sistemi di controllo e robotici.
Anni Novanta. Tecnomare continua l’attività
secondo i due filoni della ricerca e
dell’ingegneria, ampliando progressivamente
piattaforme progettate e installate. Per
alcuni anni la società deve poi far fronte
a nuove condizioni operative, nel momento
in cui gli investimenti pubblici nella
ricerca vengono sensibilmente limitati
Established in 1971 following an initiative
by a group of shareholders interested in
developing sea technology to take
advantage of the innovation spill-over in
their own business (from IMI to Fiat, from
Pirelli to Breda, and, of course, Eni),
Tecnomare has always been able to couple
pure research with concrete development of
structures and products for off-shore
activities.
Gradually, the company has enlarged its
field of action offering an increasingly varied
range of engineering services in the oil and
gas sector (from designing whole off-shore
platforms to engineering well-drilling
technologies), plant maintenance
engineering, robotics and space (in
particular automated vehicles for undersea
intervention on well heads and pipelines) and consultant
services regarding activities related to HSEQ systems
(Health, Safety, Environment and Quality).
all’Imi quale finanziatore – Tecnomare ha sempre saputo
sulle teste pozzo o sulle pipeline), consulenza sui sistemi
Hseq-Health, safety, environment and quality.
(45% Eni, 10% Snamprogetti e 5% Saipem) e oggi è riconosciuta
52
sante, su cui vantiamo competenze eccellenti e dove siamo
impegnati su diversi fronti”, spiega l’ingegner Alfredo
D’Agostino, presidente e amministratore delegato. Oltre
in questi campi. E questi progetti rappresentano in
Eni’s Way
Tecnomare is
the engineering
company of the
Eni group. It has
achieved a unique
standing in its
market segment,
thanks to cutting
innovation, and the
wide range of its
operations:
Excellence in research. Tecnomare
started operations in 1971 as an applied
research business, at a time of great
economic and industrial growth for Italy.
It was set a mission to develop and
implement new marine technologies for
industry. It can stake a claim to being
among the very first establishments to
have brought about innovation based on
State funds managed by IMI (Istituto
Since 1997, Tecnomare has been controlled by the Eni
Group for 60 percent (45 percent Eni, 10 percent
Snamprogetti and 5 percent Saipem). Today, the company
is recognised by markets as an “independent engineer”
with a high reputation in the off-shore oil sector, which is
Tecnomare’s core business: out of a 52 million euro
turnover in 2003, 45 millions stemmed from contracts with
oil companies.
“Yet,” engineer Alfredo D’Agostino, Tecnomare’s chairman
and MD, said, “we do regard space and robotics for space
vehicles as a highly interesting sector, in which we can
boast excellent skills and are active on several fronts”.
Besides having developed the drill made for Rosetta,
Tecnomare is also working on a robotic arm to be installed
on the International Space Station, an automated microlaboratory
- called Ipse - which will be installed on the next
robotic probes for the exploration of Mars, and on
stereoscopic vision (that is the “eyes” of a robot to
measure the depth of a field with high precision). Extremely
interesting is also the “Mole” project, directly
Italy’s national industrial policies and
Eni’s interest in the development of
offshore technology – Eni was
Tecnomare’s largest shareholder –
provided an ideal environment to develop
Tecnomare’s research activities, proof of
which lies with its track record.
1973-1977. New technologies developed
by Tecnomare are adopted onboard four
AGIP platforms at the Loango field
(offshore Congo). Tecnomare designs
and develops all the burying equipment
for underwater cable and subsea
pipelines.
The platform was decommissioned in
2001 based on design incorporated
procedures.
Control System), the first autonomous
system for subsea well head remote
control. This was also Tecnomare’s first
robotic and control systems application
in the oil and gas field.
90s. Tecnomare pursues its endeavours
along both lines of research and
engineering, gradually expanding the
geographical area of its operations to
include Brazil and the Middle East,
totalling more than one hundred
offshore platforms designed and
installed. The company was then faced
with new operating conditions for a
number of years, as a result of a
sizeable reduction in State funds for
research, coupled with a reduction of cofinancing
by partners.
1997. The company changes from an
applied research company to a full-fledged
engineering endeavour. Eni, through AGIP,
buys out IMI and hence acquires leading
shareholder status, providing it with a
greater say in Tecnomare’s strategies and
business goals.
operates in the Kazakh sector of the
Caspian Sea taking part in planning the
first phase development of the Kashagan
field, one of the most complex offshore
projects ever embarked upon. AGIP KCO
is the single operator of the project while
the Parsons and Fluor KDPC joint venture
has been awarded the engineering
contract, which in turn is subdivided in
offshore engineering (care of Tecnomare)
and onshore/sealine engineering (care of
Parsons/Fluor).
Kashangan is a project of vast
significance and a very challenging one
due to extreme climate conditions,
delicate environmental balance, sea
bottom features and fluid
characteristics, requiring cutting edge
solutions from the technological point of
view and, above all, from that of
systems engineering.
commissioned by ESA to Tecnomare, an entirely automated
multi-function drill, able to dig the ground of Mars to a
depth of at least 100 metres.
“Work on these projects may seem to some people a
‘waste’ of time and resources with just a heap of problems
to resolve for slight economic gain,” they said at
Tecnomare. “However if the Italian Space Agency, the
European Space Agency and even NASA turn to us for the
creation of drills and small robotic arms capable of
working in the most extreme conditions in space this is
because we have developed top-level expertise in these
fields. These projects represent for us an excellent
opportunity to make the most of a useful technological
window, the one that has opened up between the oil sector
and the sophisticated technology of the space sector.
Knowing both these worlds, which at first seem very far
apart, allows the migration both ways of knowledge and
technology, which certainly benefits both worlds, with an
ensuing spill-over which can undoubtedly turn into a
competitive lead in the oil sector”. ■
IL CASO PIÙ STRABILIANTE
è stato quello della diffusione
dei libri attraverso i quotidiani,
iniziativa adottata
per cercare di arginare la crisi
delle vendite dei giornali. Il
paradosso sembrava smaccato:
rimediare alla volontà di
non leggere fornendo altra
lettura, per di più a pagamento
e impegnativa.
Eppure in breve tempo le edicole
si sono trasformate in
minilibrerie, stracolme di
nuove enciclopedie, capolavori
della letteratura classica,
volumi di arte e poesia, riedizioni
di collane di opere storiche,
con giornalai rassegnati
a prendere nota delle prenotazioni
di clienti in attesa della
ristampa di qualche agognato
volume.
Cose da non credere? Meglio
presunto strapotere dell’informazione in rete, disponibile
A sostenerlo
è Tullio Gregory, decano dell’Istituto dell’Enciclopedia
Italiana (fondata da Giovanni Treccani) e attuale
La Treccani dell’energia
Collquio con UGO ROMANO di LAURA BARBIERI
In occasione del 50° anniversario della
sua costituzione, l’Eni, in collaborazione
con l’Istituto dell’Enciclopedia Italiana
Treccani ha assunto l’iniziativa di realizzare
l’Enciclopedia degli idrocarburi.
L’opera completa sarà costituita da cinque
volumi.
Sessanta portarono l’Eni a promuovere
l’Enciclopedia del petrolio e del gas naturale.
Ora come allora vi è la consapevolezza
della centralità del ruolo degli idrocarburi
nello sviluppo economico, ma anche
nelle relazioni internazionali e nelle
prospettive tecnologiche. Enrico Mattei,
massimamente strategica, ispira sicuramente
dell’informazione. Come noto, il novanta per cento
dei processi di produzione e di trasformazione
degli idrocarburi e quindi dall’analisi
e dalla soluzione delle problematiche
connesse alla salute, alla sicurezza
e all’ambiente. L’intreccio strettissimo
tra sostenibilità dello sviluppo e innovazione
tecnologica trova il suo puntuale riscontro
nella struttura dell’opera.
I primi due volumi trattano, infatti, in modo
specifico anche le questioni delle
qualità ambientali in relazione all’attività
upstream e downstream e il terzo volume
è dedicato espressamente all’evoluzione
tecnologica in relazione allo sviluppo, alla
produzione e allo sfruttamento intensivo
dei giacimenti di idrocarburi convenzionali
e non convenzionali, alla generazione di
energia da fonti fossili e da fonti rinnovabili,
alla problematica del vettore idrogeno,
ai temi di sostenibilità complessiva.
“Considerare il carattere pervasivo dell’aspetto
ambientale e la continua evoluzione
tecnologica – afferma Ugo Romano,
amministratore delegato di EniTecnologie
e direttore dell’opera – rafforza l’attualità
dell’Enciclopedia degli idrocarburi e la
rende sicuramente valida per un lungo
periodo di tempo”.
La riflessione iniziale sulla scelta dei destinatari
potenziali della nuova enciclopedia
ha contribuito a chiarire l’approccio ai
temi da trattare.
“Definire il pubblico di riferimento – aggiunge
Ugo Romano – permette di calibrare
correttamente il livello di approfondimento
tecnico e scientifico. La precedente
Enciclopedia era destinata ad operatori
del settore e quindi i contributi risultavano
altamente specialistici. L’esigenza
attuale invece è quella di realizzare un
prodotto con elevate qualità tecnico
scientifiche ma, nel contempo, con carat-
teristiche più divulgative: da distribuire
agli stakeholders, al mondo
della finanza, dell’economia, della
politica e della scienza, sia in Italia
sia all’estero. Per questo si è
deciso di realizzarla in due lingue:
uno sforzo notevole, come si può
immaginare, nuovo anche per l’Istituto
Treccani, e che ribadisce il
ruolo crescente dell’Eni come protagonista
internazionale”.
L’organizzazione scelta per l’Enciclopedia
degli idrocarburi è quella
tematica.
fonti rinnovabili) sono state affrontate
mettendo a confronto diverse opinioni e
THE BOOK’S COMEBACK
Encyclopedias are a cultural reservoir
meant never to run out.
Even in the era of information technology
and virtual knowledge.
A talk with TULLIO GREGORY
by LAURA BRUNETTI
THE MOST EXTRAORDINARY CASE HAS BEEN THE
distribution of books with the daily papers, an initiative
that has been adopted to try to stem the crisis of
newspaper sales. The contradiction seemed an
extreme one: make up for the unwillingness to read by
providing further reading material at a cost to the consumer,
and difficult reads to boot.
Yet in a short while newspaper stands had turned into mini
libraries full to overflowing with new encyclopedias, bestselling
literature classics, volumes of art and poetry,
reprints of history book series, with newsagents resigning
themselves to taking reservations from clients waiting for
re-prints of their desired volumes.
Hard to believe? Well, just try to understand. The first
observation that comes to mind is that Italy being one of
the European countries with the fewest books read annually
per capita does not just mean disinterest. One could talk
about the lack of training in reading, not much stimulus, a
limited number of bookstores in the territory and the lack
of encouragement for a large portion of the general public
not used to literary texts who wander aimlessly around
bookstores, looking, often in vain, for a staff member who
will help him in picking a book.
The interest in literature is there but it needs to be
directed. That is why the always valid suggestions written
up in the papers have been accepted with enthusiasm. But
interest in printed material, of which a recent phenomenon
IL SAPERE SUGLI IDROCARBURI.
Negli anni Sessanta l’Eni pubblica gli otto volumi
dell’Enciclopedia del petrolio e del gas naturale
(a fianco). Dopo 40 anni, la Società avvia i lavori
per la realizzazione dell’Enciclopedia
degli idrocarburi, in collaborazione con l’Istituto
dell’Enciclopedia Italiana.
KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HYDROCARBONS.
In the ’60s Eni published the eight-volume
Enciclopedia del Petrolio e del Gas naturale (Oil
and Natural Gas Encyclopaedia). Forty years later,
Eni has started work on making the Encyclopaedia
of Hydrocarbons, in cooperation with the Italian
Encyclopaedia Institute.
has been examined, is not sporadic and is
part of broader considerations stemming
from the current alleged dominance of
information available on the Internet,
without any apparent boundaries of space
or time.
Spreading knowledge though books is not
in decline. On the contrary, it is showing
fresh signs of life. At least Tullio Gregory,
dean of the Italian Encyclopedia Institute
(founded by Giovanni Treccani) and current member of the
Treccani Scientific Council, would agree. “About 15 years’
ago the prophets of doom foresaw the end of the
Gutenberg galaxy and the end of books. Today, on the
contrary, not only has paper consumption increased at a
frantic pace but the number of books printed and sold has
grown. The advantages that a printed text has to offer
versus the same text offered electronically is enough to
keep the competition at bay. It offers an easy read, quick
consulting and reliable information. It is important to point
out that 90 percent of the information that you find on the
Internet is not certified. This is an enormous problem, not
to mention the time needed to skim through excess
material.”
A printed text is certainly perceived as a reliable source
and a trustworthy publisher can boost its appeal.
“The Treccani name – says professor Gregory – has a
strong appeal on people who view it as guaranteed quality.
The Institute, after almost 80 years of history, continues to
carry out a central role in the Italian culture, given that it
brings together knowledge of the most advanced levels with
the collaboration of scholars from around the world, while
at the same time valuing and transmitting the nation’s
cultural patrimony.”
But the Encyclopedia itself, an instrument that offers
information on any subject or specific topic in a systematic
way could seem an obsolete tool in the era of information
technology. Wikipedia, the free and multilingual
Encyclopedia that appeared for the first time online in
2001, and which is constantly being updated, demonstrates
its desire to encompass even this traditional and well
thought out instrument of knowledge in an area of
instantaneousness.
“The Encyclopedia, at a highly scientific level like ours, is
not a disposable object; its reading cannot come to an end
with the cursory consultation of a piece of information. The
Encyclopedia must offer the foundation and structure of
knowledge, taking note of changes in trends and methods
tecnologie informatiche. Il caso di Wikipedia,
l’Enciclopedia libera e multilingue, apparsa in
rete nel 2001 e continuamente aggiornata, dimostra
la volontà di inglobare anche questo
tradizionale e ponderato strumento di conoscenza
in un ambito di istantaneità.
“L’enciclopedia, se ad alto livello scientifico
come la nostra, non è un prodotto usa e getta;
Eni’s Way
The Treccani of energy
A talk with UGO ROMANO by LAURA BARBIERI
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary
of its foundation, Eni, in
collaboration with Istituto dell’Enciclopedia
Italiana Treccani has taken on
the initiative of producing the Encyclopaedia
of Hydrocarbons.
The complete work will be made up of
five volumes. The motivation behind this
work is not very different from the one
which in the sixties brought Eni to
promote the Petroleum and Natural Gas
Encyclopaedia. Now, like then, there is
the awareness of the centrality of the
role of hydrocarbons in economic
development, but also in international
relations and technological perspectives.
In the introduction to that first
encyclopaedia, Enrico Mattei stressed
that the “history of the oil industry is a
complex tale of men, ideas and
technical and economic facts.”
Of course, forty years ago there was
more optimism on petroleum’s positive
potential that was bringing forth “a new
reality of work and more balanced wellbeing”,
but the awareness was also
there of facing a phenomenon in
constant evolution, “an ongoing story”
involving “colossal interests”.
The need to redefine the centrality of
the petroleum industry, viewed as a
most strategic activity, certainly inspires
the new encyclopedia and is clearly
reflected in its set-up.
The scenario looming in the evolution of
the economic system is dominated by a
steadily growing demand for energy. The
strategy in the petroleum industry is
dominated by two factors: to supply
growing quantities of gas and oil and
work in line with the strong request for
sustainability.
Progress, which hydrocarbons have been
the engine and symbol of, cannot in any
way be disjointed from the processing
of research and highlighting the relations between the
various disciplinary areas. Constantly being updated, it still
mustn’t try to seek out the latest news (that is what the
Appendix, Supplements and computer resources are for)
but rather supply basic guidance and conceptual structures
of the different disciplines.
Of course, the Encyclopedia always reflects the culture of
an era. We have recorded the differing symmetry among the
disciplines in the various Appendixes, especially in the last
two (which span the last two decades of The Twentieth
Century), with significant changes: compared to the large
Eni’s Way
quality of hydrocarbon production and
transformation and therefore, from the
analysis and resolution of problems tied
to health, safety and the environment.
The tight knit between development
sustainability and technological
innovation finds a punctual
correspondence in the structure of the
encyclopedia.
The first two volumes deal specifically
also with the questions of
environmental quality in relation to
upstream and downstream activity and
the third volume is dedicated expressly
to technological evolution concerning the
development, production and intensive
exploitation of conventional and
unconventional hydrocarbon deposits,
energy generation from fossil resources
and renewable sources, the hydrogen
vector and the issues of overall
sustainability.
“To consider the pervasive character of
the environmental aspect and the
continuous technological evolution,”
says Ugo Romano, Managing Director of
EniTecnologie and director of the
encyclopedia, “heightens the interest of
the Encyclopaedia of Hydrocarbons and
makes it certainly valid for a long period
of time.”
The initial reflection on the choice of
potential readers of the new
encyclopedia has contributed to clarify
the approach to the themes to be dealt
with.
“To define the readership,” said
Romano, “allows for the correct
calibration of the level of technical and
scientific detail. The previous
Encyclopaedia was meant for oil
industry operators and therefore
contributions were highly specialistic.
The current need is that of putting out a
product with high technical and
scientific qualities but at the same
time, of a more popular sort, as it is
meant to be distributed to stakeholders,
the world of finance, economy, politics
and science, both in Italy and abroad.
That’s why it was decided to produce it
in two languages: a remarkable effort,
as you can imagine, something new for
the Istituto Treccani, and reasserting
Eni’s growing role as an international
player.”
The organization chosen for the
Encyclopaedia of Hydrocarbons is by
subjects. This approach overcomes the
unavoidable fragmentation of an
alphabetical organisation and also in
keeping with the popular character of
the work, it allows to put technicalscientific
matters alongside more
general ones, such as strictly economic
matters or those relating to international
regulations and contract issues.
“Obviously in this connection,” stressed
Romano, “Eni couldn’t behave as a
client and nothing else. A lot of
information can be found in reference
publications, but a substantial
contribution can also come from those
who work in the hydrocarbon industry
and do it not merely in academic terms.
The various structures of the Group
have been actively involved on the basis
of their respective competence, from the
very moment we started planning the
work and choosing the authors.”
The Encyclopaedia also deals with
matters which are not directly connected
with the oil and gas industry but may
find a way to integrate into it. In this
perspective, most debated issues (such
as nuclear power and renewable
sources) are tackled by comparing
different opinions and banking obviously
on the prestige and authority of the
positions expressed.
Encyclopedia, the Appendixes have gradually begun to show
the emergence of computer technology, space sciences,
research on the structure of matter, biomedical sciences
and, in particular, neuroscience, environmental sciences,
politology, anthropology, and so on. Significant has been
the changing balance over of the years: for example,
biomedical sciences today – in the latest Appendixes – has
practically equaled history and geography, two fundamental
sections in every encyclopedia.”
For this precise richness and flexibility, the large
Encyclopedia, with its Appendixes, is still sought out and
saperi diversi e la loro reciproca
integrazione. Questo si rispecchia
pienamente nella nostra Enciclopedia
italiana come nelle enciclopedie
specialistiche che abbiamo
pubblicato. Le nostre opere
generali sono organizzate per lemmi
alfabeticamente ordinati, altre
enciclopedie sono o per lemmi o
strutturate sistematicamente per
argomenti. Strutture diverse che
rispecchiano due diverse esigenze,
sempre presenti nella storia
delle opere a carattere enciclopedico.
Si potrebbe dire che le due
articolazioni rispondono a due diversi
modi di organizzazione dei
saperi: l’ordine alfabetico frantuma
e recupera i rapporti interdisciplinari,
le intersezioni, attraverso
la rete dei rinvii da una ad
altra voce; l’ordine sistematico organizza
i saperi tematicamente e
opera)”.
L’enciclopedia quindi come fonte di informazione fondamentale,
autorevole, rapida, comprensibile.
But other than the subject matter, has the way of organizing
knowledge also changed?
“Certainly the picture of knowledge, what once was called
the classification of sciences, has changed so profoundly,
as I mentioned, thanks to the emergence of new fields of
knowledge and to the relations between the various
branches and their reciprocal integration. This is fully
evidenced in our Italian Encyclopedia, just like in the
specialized encyclopedias that we have published. Our
general works are organized with entries in alphabetical
order. Other encyclopedias are organized just by entry or
are systematically structured by subjects.. Different
structures that mirror two different demands always
present in the history of works of an encyclopedic nature.
One could say that the two methods respond to two
different scholarly methods of organizing knowledge: the
alphabetic order splits and recovers interdisciplinary
relations and intersections using the network of cross
references from one entry to another; the systematic order
arranges knowledge by subjects while particular topics are
recovered in the indexes.
Even regarding language, a work interested in lasting
through time must take particular care. The two basic rules
that guide the Institute’s editors, in charge of reviewing text
style provided by the experts, are: a medium level of
comprehension (at least for the introductive part of the
entry) and self references (referring the reader to another
entry within the same work).
The Encyclopedia is therefore a source of essential
information, dependable, quick and comprehensible but
also a formative instrument that stimulates reflection and
capacity for synthesis by the reader.
“An encyclopedic entry is not something you read in bed just
before falling asleep. It is a text that
must be absorbed with attention
because it is a dense source of
stimulating references. This also
requires a process of selection and
synthesis on the part of the reader so
that he puts away in his memory only
the information he needs. And it is
precisely for this extremely educative
function that it unnerves me to know
that, today, many teachers advise their
own students to carry out research on
the Internet. Apart from the value of
the information gathered, this
suggests simply ‘copying and pasting’,
rejecting the need of reading more
thoroughly and thereby eliminates
synthesizing what the Encyclopedia, on
the contrary, requires with a highly
educative value.” ■
Tutti gli idrocarburi
in cinque volumi
Valori e contenuti della nuova
opera dedicata all’industria
del petrolio e del gas.
In tutto il suo ciclo di vita.
Fra storia, scienza, politica,
economia e geografia.
all’industria degli idrocarburi.
tavole fuori testo, mappe geologiche e geografiche,
1° volume. Dopo una parte introduttiva sulla geologia del
THE HYDROCARBONS ENCYCLOPAEDIA HAS BEEN
1960s. The new work’s approach and structure, however, are
profoundly different to the prior editorial project. It is worth
stressing how in the past few decades – against a background
of a continuously changing geopolitical outlook – the petroleum
industry has both strengthened its strategic vision with regards
to achieving greater added value to its products, and paid
processi di conversione termica e catalitica…), all’ottenimento
convenzionali (greggi pesanti, sabbie e scisti bituminosi, gas
uso dell’idrogeno come vettore energetico, impiego
(cogenerazione industriale, generazione in scala distribuita e
5° volume.
usata nell’industria petrolifera.
increasing attention to issues pertaining
to health, safety and the environment, in
the light of a growing awareness with
regards to sustainable development
and quality of life. To that effect
technological innovation has necessarily
taken on an ever more important role; a
role which the new publication gives
particular consideration to. Even the
change in title helps give greater
prominence to the “quality” of the
resource, namely the composition of
hydrocarbons. The Hydrocarbons
Encyclopaedia will comprise five
volumes, totalling 800 pages of
illustrated text each. The encyclopaedia
will be published both in Italian and in
English and its contents are vetted by a
Scientific Panel and Coordinating’
Board.
The first four volumes break down
according to subject matter and provide
an in-depth, structured approach to the
hydrocarbon industry topics.
Contributions are provided by ranking
specialists from around the world, and
are characterised by a strong
interdisciplinary approach, in order to
enhance the publication’s intended
educational and critical aspects, which
add to standard informative purposes.
All contributions come with specific
bibliographical references, as well as
providing, in many cases, a general
literature required for background
reading. The first four volumes will also
be rich in illustrations: text-illustrations,
accounting for 20 percent of overall
content, are coupled with plates, geological and geographical
maps, thematic charts, etc.. The encyclopaedia comes
complete with a 5 th volume which is designed to guide readers
through the entire publication.
Volume 1 provides an introduction to petroleum geology
(hydrocarbons origin and formation, accumulations geological
characteristics, etc.), and describes exploration, well drilling
and completion, reservoir surveying and development, well
production, hydrocarbons transportation and natural gas
storage. Volume 1 is completed by a section on environmental
conservation, health and safety with regards to upstream
activities.
Volume 2 focuses on analysis of refinery structures,
characterization of main refinery products, description of
refining operations (distillation processes, gasoline upgrading
processes, thermal and catalytic conversion processes, etc),
base product production (building blocks from natural gas,
olefins and diolefins, aromatics), intermediate production for
the petrochemical industry, and polymeric materials (from
polyolefins to advanced functional polymers). Volume 2 is
completed by a section on the issues of environment
Eni’s Way
conservation, safety and health associated with downstream
activities. Volume 2 aims to illustrate the high degree of
integration among the various sectors described therein, as
well as describing the wealth of process and product
engineering innovations developed in production cycles during
the last decades.
Volume 3 focuses on evolving technologies and possible
scenarios, providing an extensive and in-depth review on
research and development activities for a range of specific
applications: hydrocarbon production from non-conventional oil
sources (heavy crudes, tar sands and bituminous shale,
hydrated gases), liquid hydrocarbon production from alternative
fossil sources (from fossil fuel liquefaction, natural gas
liquefaction, etc), optimising reservoir recovery factor, using
hydrogen as energy vector, advanced applied technologies for
power generation (industrial cogeneration, high-efficiency
distributed scale generation, fuel cell energy generation,
renewable energy sources, etc.), sustainable motor
transportation (producing eco-friendly fuels and combustibles,
adopting electric drive or hybrid vehicles, etc.), CO 2, separation
and confinement, CO 2 biofixation, development of
environmental monitoring techniques, etc..
Volume 4 provides a historical overview of the hydrocarbon
industry, from its inception to the role oil companies play in
the new market setting, and also analyses the size and
geographical distribution of reserves and resources. Volume 4
reviews the main economic aspects connected with the
hydrocarbon industry, also from the point of view of geopolitics
and prospect scenarios: oil and gas market basic economics,
public policies, market forms and pricing policies, key players
(oil companies, producer states, consumer states, international
organisations, etc.), business strategies, the macroeconomic
outlook, gearing the gas industry from a state of monopoly
towards open competition, risk and uncertainty management,
environmental pressures. Volume 4 also tackles international
laws relative to hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation, also
covering pollution prevention. It also deals with the main
national regulatory systems. Volume 4 is closed off by articles
on the world’s most significant countries from an oil and gas
perspective.
Volume 5 is in two parts. Part 1 is structured by subject and
provides key chemical/physical notions concerning
hydrocarbons (nature and characteristics of hydrocarbons,
physical and chemical balances, dispersed surfaces and
systems, fluids dynamics, kinetics and catalysis, heat
exchange, separation processes, chemical reagents,
fundamentals and kinetics of polymerisation processes,
automation and control, combustion, detonations and
explosions, systems analysis and mathematical modelling,
materials). The second half of the Volume 5 is alphabetically
organized, just as in an encyclopedic dictionary, with thousands
of items, providing readers with a basic understanding of the
rich terminology adopted by the oil industry.
In mostra gli oggetti del desiderio
Trasforma in realtà i desideri che altrimenti
non avrebbero risposta, rende
possibili i sogni e non pone limiti all’immaginazione:
è la plastica. A testimoniare
la straordinaria “magia” e la ormai centenaria
storia di questo materiale carico di originali
qualità estetiche e fortemente innovativo,
sono state allestite due emozionanti
esposizioni promosse da PlasticsEurope Italia
(Associazione dei produttori di materie
plastiche che opera all’interno di Federchimica).
La prima, “Plastica soggetto del desiderio”,
ospitata nel Palazzo Ducale di Mantova
dal 18 settembre al 18 ottobre 2004;
noi, disprezzarla o amarla vuol dire prendere
in considerazione i limiti e i vantaggi, comunque
l’identità, del mondo che ci siamo
costruiti attorno e in cui viviamo”.
trimonio di esperienze e conoscenze pressoché unico. Modesto
e ironico come solo possono permettersi i grandi e
seguire, leggere o ascoltare.
Preparazione e versatilità ne fanno una figura quasi impossibile
da riassumere. Collaboratore fin dagli anni Trenta di
importanti pubblicazioni (La Fiera letteraria, Le arti pla-
Europa.
Grazie a un percorso essenziale e coinvolgente,
la mostra si sviluppa in quattro momenti.
Tutto ha inizio in un “giardino immaginario”
dove sono collocati oggetti di plastica
“fuori scala”, ripetuti all’infinito, per
suggerire le tante potenzialità applicative
della plastica. Prosegue poi con una sezione
legata al design Made in Italy e all’importanza
che hanno avuto i materiali
polimerici nella nascita e nella storia del
progetto.
caratteristiche materiche. Il
“viaggio” si conclude con il
percorso delle innovazioni,
dove si evidenzia come oggi
il desiderio passi anche
attraverso l’aspettativa di
prestazioni sempre più elevate
nell’ambito del tempo
libero, dello sport e delle
applicazioni più sofisticate.
La seconda esposizione –
“Plastic experience in fashion
design” – costituisce invece
una sorta di indagine sull’utilizzo
della plastica applicata al jewel & fashion
design. La realizzazione delle opere esposte
è stata affidata ai giovani designer internazionali
della Domus Academy (scuola
internazionale di formazione post universitaria
e laboratorio di ricerca), che hanno
voluto rappresentare le potenzialità semantiche
e fisiche della plastica nel settore
moda, con la proposta di oggetti e
prototipi che esprimono non solo ipotesi
di abbigliamento innovative, ma anche
sintesi materiche di nuova generazione.
Le materie plastiche infatti, amate dal
fashion design fin dal loro primo apparire,
sono divenute nel tempo protagoniste insostituibili
della ricerca di nuovi materiali
e della libertà creativa, consentendo di
sviluppare soluzioni applicative inedite e
attuali.
Magro, elegante e scattante, a 94
Termini
A WORLD OF PLASTIC
The development of polymers accompanied
the great transformation of modern society in
the 1900s. It opened the door to innovative
productions and technologies, but also
to new ways and styles of life, consumption
and habits. As told by an expert witness:
Gillo Dorfles.
by NICCOLÒ D’AQUINO
IT IS NOT EASY TO TRACE THE EVOLUTION THAT PLASTIC
materials – among the most intrusive and polymorphous –
have known, since the dawn of the 1900s, in the modern
world. First as industrial products and then as elements of
daily life. Containers par excellence of everything, they
developed in time so as to become objects themselves and
have filled up unsuspected spaces in many arts and crafts and
have bit by bit taken on significance: not only economic
significance, but also cultural and social significance.
But in all probability no-one can do it better than Gillo Dorfles,
exhibition at the Ducal Palace in Mantua. A second exhibition, “Plastic experience
in fashion design” will be held at the Polimeri Europa factory in Mantua
on the occasion of the “Open Factories” event.
who brings together a special style and sensitivity and a
unique heritage of experience and knowledge. Modest and
ironic as only great and genuine intellectuals can be, Dorfles
represents, on the Italian and international cultural scene, a
point of reference, and in virtue of his personality he is
considered one of the most pleasant and modern men of
thought to follow, read and listen to.
Background and versatility mean that he is almost
impossible to sum up. A collaborator since the 30s of
important publications – La Fiera letteraria (The Literary
Fair), Le arti plastiche (The plastic arts), Domus, Il mondo
(The world), The journal of Aesthetics – and founder after the
war of the Mac-Concrete Art Movement with Munari, Soldati
and Monnet, as well as art critic and artist in his own right.
An aesthetics university professor and also author of
important books that have recorded the evolution of fashions
and cultural trends and social phenomena, such as Ultime
tendenze nell’arte d’oggi (Latest trends in the art of today)
and L’intervallo perduto (The lost interval); plus countless
essays (above all: his study on kitsch, which marked an
epoch).
Born in Trieste in 1910 – his father was from Gorizia and his
mother from Genoa – Dorfles has lived for decades in Milan in
a beautiful home where he often sits at his ‘famous’ grand
piano, but which he leaves regularly every day “to explore – he
says – what’s new on the ground”. Slim, elegant and brisk, at
94 Dorfles maintains all his intellectual liveliness blended with
an intact, lucid curiosity. For this reason (as well as for an
almost parallel course) he appears to be the sort of witness
capable of giving “the world of plastic” an adequate and
articulate representation and interpretation.
stere sono bellissimi e, per me,
hanno un certo alone di mistero:
ma non so a che cosa veramente
corrispondano. L’unica
cosa che so è che tutte queste
diverse forme di plastica derivano
dal petrolio. Direttamente
o indirettamente.
L’era della plastica. È cominciata
quando gli uomini non
solo hanno scoperto il petrolio,
ma hanno scoperto che ha
un’infinità di utilizzi. Il petrolio,
effettivamente, ha rivoluzionato
il nostro modo di essere
perché tutti noi, senza accorgercene,
abbiamo continuamente
a che fare con questi
nuovi materiali. A cominciare
dalla resina sintetica impiegata
dal dentista. Io non so
che cosa sia, ma a lui permette
in due minuti di ricostruire un
dente nuovo, mentre un tempo
ci volevano le capsule di
porcellana. E molto più tempo.
E lo stesso vale per le valvole
cardiache o le protesi che
rifanno un’anca o altri arti.
È entrata in tutti gli aspetti
della società. Anche nel mondo
dell’arte. E l’ha trasformato.
Moltissimi oggetti che, una
volta, venivano fatti in legno,
in metallo, in creta, in vetro,
oggi sono fatti in materie plastiche.
E risultano più resistenti,
estremamente più economici,
con la prospettiva di
poter essere riprodotti in serie.
STRAORDINARIO MATERIALE.
Entrata a far parte
della nostra vita, la plastica
ha conquistato eccezionali
spazi di utilizzo grazie
soprattutto alla sua duttilità
che le permette di declinarsi
in un’infinita gamma
di forme, materiali, colori
e trasparenze.
EXTRAORDINARY MATERIAL.
Plastic has become part of our
life and has gained exceptional
room in it thanks, above all,
to being so pliable as to be
made into an infinite number
of shapes, materials, colours
and transparencies.
sarà forse stata fatta – immagino – in cinquecento copie.
secondario rispetto all’inventiva della progettazione dell’artista.
Prima l’oggetto artistico non esisteva, finché non
usciva finito dalle mani dell’artista. Ora l’oggetto d’arte
esiste da subito, nel suo progetto disegnato.
Ma ha modificato il concetto del “bello”. Bisognerebbe
The objects of desire on show
What can turn into reality desires
which otherwise would get no
response, renders dreams
feasible and puts no limits on the
imagination - the answer is plastic. To
testify to the extraordinary “magic” and
century-old history of this material rich in
original aesthetic qualities and
immensely innovative, two gripping
exhibitions on the history of plastic have
been set up in Italy, promoted by
Assoplast (Association of producers of
plastic materials, part of Federchimica).
The first, “Plastic - subject of desire”,
was on at the Ducal Palace in Mantua
from 18 September to 18 October 2004.
The second, “Plastic experience in
fashion design”, was on display between
October and November 2004, in the
Polimeri Europa plant in Mantua during
Fattorie Aperte, the ‘Open Factories’
annual event, when the Italian chemical
industries opens its plants to the public.
The goals pursued by these initiatives, in
particular with the first exhibition,
“Plastic - subject of desire” include the
promotion of an increasingly positive
image of plastic because, as Ugo Volli
states in the catalogue which
accompanies the show: “… plastic is
one of the great terms of comparison in
our times, certainly the most typical
material of modernity. To talk of
plastic is to talk of us, to despise it
or love it means taking into account
the limits and advantages, in any
case the identity, of the world we
have built around us and live in”.
Works of art, sculptures and
A necessary premise. I know
absolutely nothing about the scientific
and technical foundations of plastic.
Terms such as methacrylate,
plexiglass, fiberglass or polyester are
beautiful and, for me, they have a
certain aura of mystery: but I don’t
know what they really correspond to.
The only thing I know is that all these
different forms of plastic derive from
oil. Directly or indirectly.
The era of plastic. It started when men not only discovered oil
but they also discovered that it had infinite uses. Indeed oil
has revolutionised our way of being because all of us, without
realizing it, continually deal with these new materials. Starting
with the synthetic resin used by the dentist. I don’t know what
it is but it allows him to reconstruct a new tooth in two
minutes, while at one time one needed porcelain crowns.. And
a lot more time. And the same goes for heart valves or the
Eni’s Way
objects, all rigorously made of plastic
(from the clothes designed by Paco
Rabanne and the jewellery of Peter
Chang to the clarinets of Renzo Arbore
and cult items of Italian design from the
fifties and sixties) were already shown
in the exhibition of the same name
“Plastic - subject of desire”, in the
context of the most significant events of
the 50th Biennale d’Arte of Venice, in
the Terese Convent, which houses the
Faculty of Design and Fine Arts of the
Venice University. The exhibition was
supported by Assoplast, which includes
Polimeri Europa among member
producers.
Organised along an essential and
absorbing itinerary, the exhibition is
divided into four sections, beginning with
an “imaginary garden” containing a
parade of “out of scale” plastic objects,
duplicated over and over again to
suggest the huge application potential of
plastic.
The show goes on with a section linked
to Italian design and the importance
polymeric materials have had in the
creation and history of the project. This
is to stress how much design has
contributed to conferring on plastic the
value of desirable material capable of
setting up in time a new aesthetics in
the household and everyday life as well
as in the world of work and
communications.
Then, the “gallery of wonders” bears
witness to the visual and expressive
qualities of plastic. No longer hidden or
disguised, plastic takes its place
equivalent to a precious substance and
extolling all its pliable potential.
The ‘journey’ ends with the path of
innovation, which bears out that desire
today passes through the expectation of
increasingly higher performances in the
field of leisure time, sport and the most
sophisticated applications.
The second exhibition, “Plastic
experience in fashion design”, is an
investigation into the use of plastic
applied to jewel & fashion design. The
creation of the works on show was
entrusted to young international
designers from the Domus Academy
(international post-graduate training
school and research institute), who
represented the semantic and physical
potential of plastic in the fashion sector,
proposing objects and prototypes
expressing not only instances of
innovative clothing, but also newgeneration
material syntheses. Plastic
materials have been loved by fashion
designers since they first made their
appearance and have become
irreplaceable protagonists in the
search for new materials and
creative freedom, opening the way
to the development of new and
state-of-the-art applicative
solutions.
prostheses which rebuild a hip or
other limbs.
Plastic has entered all aspects of
society. Also the world of art. And
has transformed it. Many objects
which at one time were made in
wood, metal, clay and glass, today
are made in plastic materials. And
they are much tougher, far
cheaper, and can be produced in
series. The piece of furniture made by hand by the craftsman
is now a plastic table by Magistretti like I have here in front of
the sofa in my house.
From one mould you can reproduce thousands of copies. This
multiplication and repetition of objects – from a stool to the
ashtray by Enzo Mari which in this moment I have placed on top
of the table by Magistretti – does not affect their artistic value.
Because reproducibility existed even before the invention of
Renzo Arbore e il suo plastic swing
Renzo Arbore non ha dubbi: “L’utilizzo
della plastica è ancora oggi ancorato
a un pregiudizio. Sebbene grandi nomi
in Italia”. Ne fanno parte anche
gli strumenti musicali, come
appunto i vezzosi clarinetti
che facevano assai
Dalla riproducibilità alla globalizzazione. Del discorso
della mondializzazione sono piuttosto nemico, proprio
perché credo che ogni nazione, anzi, ogni regione, debba
conservare alcune caratteristiche, soprattutto artigianali. I
In collaborazione
denominata Miami Swing. È una specie di
scommessa, consistente nel far rivivere
una stagione d’oro ferma (grosso
modo) alla prima metà del
secolo scorso, dal momento
che il design d’avanguardia
degli anni
Sessanta – che
pure della plastica
aveva fatto un uso ampio
e innovativo – di fatto non
sfondò mai sul mercato
dell’arredamento, apparendo
forse al grande pubblico
fin troppo avveniristico.
Si tratta di una serie che
riecheggia il cosiddetto
“tropical decò” e non a
caso i diretti collaboratori
dell’autore e conduttore
di tanti programmi tv di
successo sono due fra i
più noti scenografi italiani,
creatori di alcune delle
quinte più fantasiose
realizzate dagli anni Ottanta
in poi per numerosi
varietà e commedie televisivi.
“Perché la plastica,
va ricordato, non solo
è un materiale duttile, e
quindi versatilissimo”,
spiega lo showman, “ma
riflette la luce esternamente
ed è internamente
trasparente. E il nostro repertorio è tutto
policromatico e luminescente”.
experience in fashion design” allestita,
in contemporanea, presso lo stabilimento
di Polimeri Europa di Mantova. Il
progetto è di predisporre, fra qualche tempo,
con la sua ormai rodata équipe, una
mostra – questa volta itinerante e per certi
versi anche “autopromozionale” – dedicata
agli oggetti più originali che, attraverso
l’impiego della plastica, hanno segnato il
connubio tra praticità, modernità e creatività
pura.
qualità sarà identica e i costi saranno molto più bassi. Insomma,
in un certo senso abbiamo una mondializzazione
di alcune forme estetiche: ciotole, seggiole, lampade e via
dicendo, prodotte indifferentemente in Giappone o in Europa
o in America.
Eni’s Way
plastic, but in small numbers, in handicrafts where every
element is different from the other. With the advent of design,
reproducibility is identified in the identity of every piece.
Plastic has changed things. Design objects now are all
identical. My lamp by Mangiarotti might have been made – I
imagine – in 500 copies. L’Eclisse by Magistretti or Toio by
Castiglioni or the Pipistrello lamp by Gae Aulenti are
reproduced in many copies. Of course. But they remain objects
that have a very strong artistic element: their design.
It has not changed the relationship with the user. Owning a
work is central in the relationship with it. And not only for
professional collectors.. In the era of technical reproducibility
and of plastic there is no longer the unique specimen, that is
true, but the artistic value remains: it is given by its design.
Mechanical and industrial manufacture is just a
secondary factor with respect to the inventiveness of
the design by the artist. Before the artistic object
did not exist, until it came out finished from the
hands of the artist. Now the art object exists
straight away in its drawn design.
It has modified the concept of “beautiful”. We
should speak of the concept of ‘beautiful’,
provided ‘beautiful’ exists and is definable.
Plastic and technical reproducibility have
indeed changed the notion of “beautiful”. For
example, at one time a smooth and perfectly
homogeneous object was inconceivable, such
as a vase out of aluminum, stainless steel,
or plastic. Made by an artist no longer directly with his hands
but through a mechanical process.
Therefore, concepts of beauty, pleasure and aesthetic value
that did not exist before, were born with plastics. The
bodywork of a car, that today we certainly consider an element
with some artistic values, at one time did not exist. The kind
of “beauty” of a horse-drawn carriage was completely different
from that of a motor vehicle or a jetliner. And yet it is
undeniable that in the silhouette of an airplane there is a
‘beauty’ that was inconceivable before the advent of
mechanics.
From reproducibility to globalisation. I am rather an enemy of
any talk on mondialization precisely because I think that every
country, actually, every region, has to conserve some
characteristics, above all artisanal ones. The lace of Bruges,
the ceramics of Perù or Montelupo or the mosaics of
Spilimbergo or the Venini glass are important: it would be a
pity if they disappeared. On the other hand there is no doubt
that an ‘industrialised’ object, made of plastic, can be made in
Italy as in Vietnam or Cambodia. And it is hard to find a good
reason for not doing this, seeing as the quality will be identical
and the costs much lower. In short, in a certain sense we
have a globalisation of some aesthetic forms: bowls, chairs,
lamps and so on, produced indifferently in Japan
or Europe or America. And this was not
possible before the advent of plastic
materials: fiberglass, synthetic resins and
much more.
The imagination dilemma. However it is
also true that even in the very new field
of ‘plastic’ technologies and art, you
can find instances of regionalization.
An example from Japan (I will not enter
into the question of the westernisation
of the East) is the chick tamagotchi,
that robotic toy which turned a
completely artificial plastic object
into almost a living one, and indeed,
73

a manovrare l’oggetto.
Abiti, soprabiti,
giacche a vento, calzature raggiungono oggi effetti strepitosi
plastica.
THE ERA OF PLASTIC. “A material of
our time”, it was so described by
architect Almerico De Angelis, who
managed as curator the “Plastic,
subject of desire” exhibition to show
how plastic can be a link between
dream and reality.
È presente nell’arte. La plastica è
entrata anche nell’arte vera e propria:
dalla pop art a tante altre forme
contemporanee. Jef Koons, Carol
Rama, Claes Oldenburg e altri
artisti molto seri si sono serviti, si
servono e si serviranno della plastica.
Damien Hirst, l’inglese dei vitelli
scuoiati, ha esposto all’ultima
Biennale di Venezia una grande
scaffalatura tutta piena di pillole di
plastica. Da questo punto di vista,
almeno, la Biennale è stata indicativa.
Non solo perché tutto ciò che
ha a che vedere con la fotografia,
con le ricostruzioni, poggia su questi
materiali artificiali; ma anche
perché gran parte delle sculture,
invece di essere realizzate in legno,
creta o altro, erano in plastica. Abbiamo
visto grandi manichini in
plastica provenienti da paesi dell’Estremo
Oriente: Cina, Sri Lanka.
Tutta la Biennale era “illuminata”
dalla plastica, anche se spesso con
risultati deludenti. ■
Renzo Arbore and his plastic swing
Renzo Arbore has no doubts: “The
use of plastic today is still tied to a
prejudice. Even if big names in
Italian design, from Sottsass to
Castiglioni, have found novel and creative
uses of it, there is, in general, a tendency
to undervalue its worth. Yet it is a material
drawn from sophisticated molecular
combinations and can come in many
ways, from polyethylene to polystyrene, to
resins...”. Musician and among the best
known and most popular radio and TV
hosts, Arbore feels a genuine passion for
plastic modern antiques and has become
a major collector of them.
“The first suggestions”, he told, “came
from the colourful napkin rings of my
childhood, then I surrounded myself with
radios, boxes, watches, women’s
handbags, charms … All made in joyful
and versatile plastic. And I think my
collection is the biggest of its kind in
Italy”. There are also musical
instruments, such as Arbore’s cute
clarinets, which looked nice alongside
the Paco Rabanne clothes and Gaetano
Pesce armchairs in the show “Plastic,
instigated the child to carry out specific and prescribed
operations. Which, on the one hand, is positive because the
young child learns to operate the object. On the other it is
negative, because when the child used to make on his own a
wooden or fabric puppet he developed imaginative qualities
that he no longer develops today. In this sense also
videogames present ‘dangerous’ characteristics. Faced with
these ‘devices’, even if highly complicated, rendered possible
through plastic and cybernetics, we can wonder if the moment
will not arrive when a child’s imagination will no longer exist.
The question of kitsch. Does plastic favour the glorification of
kitsch? This is another very complex question. If we take
some old plastic objects which are practically antediluvian like
those that were made out of celluloid (a material that, I think,
people today don’t even know what it looks like) we notice
that they almost seem to be porcelain. And today they have
high commercial value because they have become very rare.
Or rather: also in the field of plastic there is art on the one
hand and kitsch on the other. Plastic objects that imitate, for
example, the Tower of Pisa, shells or other things are real
kitsch. But plastic itself is not kitsch. And, actually, it is not
even dangerous. You only have to look at its use in fashion.
It is part of fashion. As I have said many times, I am
convinced that, if fashion did not exist, three quarters of
femininity would be lost. And fashion uses plastic, but only
when it needs to: one year the clothes of a designer are full of
it, and the next year, the designer prefers embroidery or straw
Eni’s Way
subject of desire”, organized by Plastics
Europe Italia (The association of Italian
producers of plastic materials, part of
Federchimica) at the Venice Biennale last
year. This led almost inevitably to his
active involvement in plastic,
transforming a simple passion into a
concrete engagement. In collaboration
with a couple of architect friends, Arbore
turned a few years ago into the author of
a very colourful line of PVC furniture,
called Miami Swing. It is kind of a bet,
consisting in bringing back to life a gold
era which came to a stop (more or less)
in the first half of the last century, since
the avant-garde design of the ‘60s -
which in any case made ample and
innovative use of plastic – never in fact
made it on furniture markets, maybe
because it looked too futuristic to the
general public.
It is a line which reminds of the so-called
“tropical deco” and not by chance the TV
programme author and presenter’s direct
collaborators rank among the best known
Italian set designers, creators of some of
the most imaginative sets for many TV
shows and plays from the ‘80s on.
“Because plastic, one should remember,
is not only a ductile, and therefore
extremely versatile, material”, explained
the showman, “but it reflects light
externally and is transparent inside. And
our repertory is all polychromatic and
luminescent”.
In the wake of his enthusiasm, Renzo
Arbore is also cherishing the idea of
setting up a new exposition, after the
example of “Plastic, subject of desire”, on
display at The Ducal Palace in Mantua
September 18-October 18, and “Plastic
experience in fashion design” set up,
simultaneously, at the Polimeri Europa
factory, also in Mantua. Arbore plans to
lay out, some time in the future, jointly
with his tried and tested team, an
exhibition – a travelling one, this time,
and in some sense also “selfpromotional”
– devoted to the most
original objects which, through the use of
plastic, have brought about the marriage
between practicalness, modernity and
pure creativity.
Daniela Tordi
fabrics or other natural materials. Therefore, I don’t think that
plastic is dangerous for fashion. On the contrary, it is
interesting to see how fashion has taken hold of plastic to
create notable garments. Clothes, overcoats, windcheaters,
shoes can show sensational effects thanks to plastic. Also the
famous plastic shoes, worn by young or old people (who think
they are still young), often allow the sort of creativity that is
impossible with leather. Women long-pointed shoes which
were the mainstay of last season, were often made out of
plastic. If they had been made out of leather they would have
cost a lot more. And, maybe they wouldn’t have even existed,
because their economic inaccessibility, coupled with the
continuous changes in fashion, would not have rendered them
possible.
It is present in art. Plastic has entered the world of art
proper: from pop art to many other contemporary forms of art.
Jef Koons, Carol Rama, Claes Oldenburg, and many other very
serious artists have made use of it. Damien Hirst, the
Englishman behind the bisected calves, showed a huge shelf
full of plastic pills at the last Venice Biennale. From this point
of view at least, the Biennale was indicative. Not only because
everything that has to do with photography and reconstruction
rests on these artificial materials; but also because a great
part of the sculptures, instead of being made out of wood, clay
or something else, were made out of plastic. We saw large
manikins in plastic from the Far East: China, Sri Lanka. The
entire Biennale was ‘illuminated’ by plastic, even if often with
disappointing results. ■
