un ruolo insostituibile nella vita
della grande metropoli milanese,
sempre più cosmopolita.

DA ALCUNI ANNI, LA CATTEDRALE APPARE –
per dirla con il Manzoni – quasi come una “gran
macchina” (I promessi sposi, XI), come un “eterno
cantiere”. Essa si mostra in parte “velata” ai
nostri occhi, ma non è privata del suo naturale splendore e
continua ad essere il centro pulsante della vita religiosa e
civile della città e della Diocesi di Milano, i cui “confini”
sono ben più ampi della cosiddetta “area metropolitana”.
Il Duomo e la sua Piazza sono da sempre legati alla città e i
milanesi ne hanno fatto un costante punto di richiamo e di
Eni’s Way
incontro nei momenti più significativi della loro storia passata
e recente. Gli avvenimenti gioiosi e tristi nella vita
della città accompagnano le diverse fasi della costruzione
della Cattedrale, facendone – come amava definirla il Cattaneo
– il “teatro della vita religiosa e civile” (Il Duomo
nella vita civile e religiosa di Milano, p. 51) durante
l’occupazione francese e quella spagnola, il regno di Napoleone,
fino alla restaurazione austriaca del 1814. Come
non ricordare qui l’Arcivescovo Andrea Carlo Ferrari, con
la sua estrema vicinanza alle vicende della città e alle sue

FOR SOME YEARS THE CATHEDRAL
has appeared – to say the way
Manzoni did – almost as a “big
machine” (The Betrothed, XI),
as a “perennial building site”. It stands
partly hidden from our eyes, but it is
not deprived of its natural splendour
and continues to be the throbbing
centre of religious and civil life in the
city and in the diocese of Milan, whose
“borders” stretch far wider than the socalled
“metropolitan area”.
The Duomo and its Piazza have always
been bound to the city and the
Milanese have made the two of them a
constant point of reference and
meeting place for the most meaningful
moments of their history, past and
present. Happy and sad events in the
city’s life accompany the various stages
of the Cathedral’s construction, making
it – as Cattaneo was fond of saying –
the “theatre of religious and civilian
life” (Il Duomo nella vita civile e
religiosa di Milano, p. 51) during the
French occupation and the Spanish
one, under Napoleon’s reign up to the
Austrian restoration in 1814. How can
one fail to remember Archbishop
Andrea Carlo Ferrari, with his extreme
closeness to the city’s events and its
social problems. How can one forget
Cardinal Alfredo Ildefonso Schuster who
– right in the Duomo during his sermon
on the first Advent Sunday of 1938 –
spoke strongly against the racial laws
issued by royal decree just four days later (November 17). And
again his soul troubled by the bombings in August 1943 on the
already long-suffering city, when not even the Cathedral was
spared. As Pope Paolo VI wrote in 1963, who had known and
loved the Cathedral when he had been Milan’s archbishop: the
Duomo “embodies the faith of a population expressing itself,…
a whole community, a whole society, a whole history”. And the
memory comes back again of the funerals, in 1969, for the
Piazza Fontana massacre and, just 24 years later (in 1993),
those of the Via Palestro bomb victims.
