IL PROGETTO. Il progetto per la nuova enciclopedia è stato
presentato al Capo dello Stato, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, nel febbraio
del 2003. Il completamento dell’opera è previsto per la primavera
del 2008. I primi quattro volumi conterranno la raccolta
sistematica delle conoscenze relative all’industria
degli idrocarburi. Il quinto volume esporrà i fondamenti
scientifici e tutte le informazioni utili a orientare il lettore.
THE PROJECT. The project of the new encyclopaedia was presented
to Italy’s Head of State, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, in February 2003.
The work is due to be completed in spring 2008. The first four
volumes will include the systematic collection of knowledge related
to the hydrocarbons industry. The fifth volume will set forth
the scientific foundations and all information that can be of use
to guide the readers.

LA PUBBLICAZIONE DEL
primo volume dell’Enciclopedia
degli Idrocarburi,
nel puntuale rispetto del piano
di lavoro, è certamente un importante
risultato già acquisito, ma
anche una premessa importante
per il completamento dell’opera entro
il termine previsto della primavera
del 2008.
Sembra a questo punto opportuno
cogliere la circostanza per fare delle
considerazioni su alcuni aspetti che
hanno caratterizzato questa prima
fase di redazione dell’opera. Non
tanto per quanto attiene ai contenuti,
che ripercorrono, con modifiche
marginali, lo schema illustrato
nel numero di Eni’s Way del lugliosettembre
2004, quanto per gli
aspetti di originalità dell’impostazione
e per le considerazioni e opinioni
a confronto che hanno preceduto
la fase della definizione ultima
del progetto.
In effetti l’Enciclopedia nacque senza
un piano organico precostituito e
la decisione di avviare il progetto fu
determinata dalla volontà di celebrare,
con un evento di grande rilevanza,
il 50° della fondazione dell’Eni
e dal felice intuito che fosse venuto
il tempo di rinnovare lo sforzo
espresso ai tempi dell’Enciclopedia
del Petrolio e del Gas pubblicata da
Eni nel 1962. E l’indicazione che
venne dal vertice della Società fu infatti
ancora più ambiziosa. L’Eni degli
anni Duemila era cresciuta da
impresa con spiccato carattere nazionale
a società di rilievo internazionale. Sarebbe stato opportuno
quindi che l’opera nascesse bilingue, in sintonia
con la formidabile crescita all’estero che si era compiuta fra
la fine degli anni Novanta e l’avvio del nuovo millennio.
Nacque, si diceva, senza un progetto, ma con la grande opportunità
derivata dalla promettente collaborazione con l’Istituto
Treccani, prestigiosa istituzione nazionale, leader
nel settore.
Era il Natale del 2002 quando ci trovammo per la prima volta
nel grande salone della sede di piazza dell’Enciclopedia a
definire la filosofia e il piano dell’opera. Primo obiettivo, la
presentazione della nuova enciclopedia nel febbraio 2003 al
Capo dello Stato con la pubblicazione di un pamphlet illustrativo.
Si avviò quindi subito un confronto sulle caratteristiche
che avrebbe dovuto avere un’enciclopedia tematica
moderna.
Era ovvio che la prima proposta ripercorresse il modello
di struttura a lemmi secondo lo schema classico, già adottato
per l’opera del 1962. Emerse quindi l’ipotesi di sviluppare
il lavoro sulla base di monografie, con gli argomenti
di rilevante interesse per l’industria del petrolio,

THE PUNCTUAL PUBLISHING OF THE FIRST VOLUME OF
the “Encyclopaedia of Hydrocarbons” is surely itself
an important achievement, but also a relevant
premise for the completion of the work, due in the
spring of 2008. At this stage, it is worthwhile to assess some
aspects which have characterised the first phase of the work.
Not so much with regard to its contents, which are in line with
the plan outlined in “Eni’s Way” July/September 2004 issue,
except for a few marginal changes. Rather, they regard the
original layout and the comparison of considerations and
opinions that preceded the stage of the project’s final
definition.
As a matter of fact, the Encyclopaedia was originally
conceived without a predefined, structured plan, and the
decision to embark on the project followed the desire to
celebrate, with a highly significant event, the 50 th anniversary
of Eni’s foundation, and the appropriate consideration that it
was high time to update the effort made in 1962, when Eni
published its “Encyclopaedia of Oil and Gas”. Indeed, Eni top
executives pointed to an even more ambitious goal. In the
late 90s and at the beginning of the new century, Eni had
grown out of a business with a distinct national character
into an internationally-renowned company; it was thus
decided that the work should be a bilingual one, to go with
the formidable growth abroad achieved in the late 90s and
at the beginning of the new millennium.
As stated above, the work began without a project, but with
the promising cooperation with Istituto Treccani, a
prestigious Italian institution and leader in this sector.
It was Christmas 2002 when we gathered, for the first
time, in the great hall at the head office in Piazza
dell’Enciclopedia, to define the work’s philosophy and plan.
The first goal was to publish a descriptive booklet, to present
the new encyclopaedia to the Head of State in February
2003. Hence, a debate was immediately started to discuss
the features of this new, modern thematic encyclopaedia.
Obviously, the first proposal followed the classical headwordbased
model, already adopted in 1962. Thereafter came the
idea to develop the work on the basis of monographs, with
subjects of interest to the oil industry inserted into a
structure with entries in alphabetical order.
The final proposal was to give up the traditional structure and
use a model organized along the lines of thematic volumes,
made up of monographic essays that deal with the various areas
related to the oil industry in a thorough, logical sequence. In
order to satisfy the need for it to be a self-referencing text, it was
decided to include in the fifth volume an encyclopaedic
45
