Si apre il 28 marzo, a Palazzo Crepadona in Belluno, la mostra su Brustolon, lo scultore del legno.
Un evento importante, per diversi motivi.
L’autore, un bellunese le cui opere sono presenti in musei e collezioni private di tutta Europa, ma che ha lasciato significative tracce
del suo genio nel territorio, in tante chiese bellunesi.
Il materiale che utilizza, il legno, dal quale sa trarre opere di rara intensità siano esse destinate agli altari o alle alcove, quella
materia prima che caratterizza i luoghi dove l’artista è nato e ha mosso i primi passi, dove si è affermato come artista e dove ha
mantenuto solide radici.
Il legno, gli alberi, il bosco rappresentano aspetti essenziali dell’ambiente naturale ma anche economico delle Dolomiti. Sono parte
integrante della storia e del presente, di ciò che c’era e che ancor vive, di ciò che spesso rappresenta il primo tangibile segnale dello
scorrere delle stagioni.
Questo numero di DolomitiBelluno for me contiene una serie di proposte di visita e soggiorno nelle destinazioni bellunesi, alcune sono
mirate a chi vuol cogliere le ultime opportunità di un inverno “vero” come non si vedeva da anni, altre dedicate a scoprire il nuovo che
nasce, la stagione primaverile con filo conduttore le passeggiate nel bosco, la vista degli alberi, la consistenza del legno.
Ci piacerebbe che il visitatore della mostra del Brustolon riuscisse attraverso le opere dell’artista a tornare alla materia grezza, a
scorgere i tronchi, a sentire i profumi e i rumori del bosco, che chi passeggia tra gli abeti e la betulla, tra il rovere e i faggi senta il
desiderio di conoscere ciò che l’ingegno umano può comunicare dando forme a ciò che la natura crea.
28th March 2009 sees the opening in Palazzo Crepadona in Belluno of the exhibition on the wood sculptor Andrea Brustolon.
This event is of considerable importance, for a number of reasons.
The artist from Belluno, whose sculptures can be admired in museums and private collections throughout Europe, has also left
behind significant traces of his outstanding work in numerous churches in his native area.
The material he used to create works of rare intensity, destined for both churches and homes: wood, that marvellous raw material
so characteristic of the area where the artist was born and raised, where he first became renowned for his sculptures and with which
he maintained solid links throughout his life.
Wood, trees and forests are a fundamental aspect not only of the natural environment but also of the economy of the Dolomites. They are
an integral part of both the area’s past and its present, of days gone by and days yet to come, of what is often the first tangible sign of the
changing of the seasons. This edition of DolomitiBelluno for me contains a series of suggestions for visits and stays in the Belluno area.
Some of these are aimed at those hoping to take the last opportunities the year offers to experience a “real winter”, the like of which we have
not seen here for years; others focus on discovering the new spring, the season of rebirth par excellence. Whatever you come here looking
for, you are sure to enjoy woodland walks, the chance to admire our magnificent trees and to reach out and touch the wood they give us.
Wouldn’t it be nice if visitors to the Brustolon exhibition were encouraged by the artist’s works to take a closer look at the raw material
they were crafted from? Here you will find a host of opportunities to admire our trees, breath in their woody scent and listen to the
sounds of the forest; and a walk amid fir and birch trees, oak and beech is sure to awaken the desire to discover what human genius
can express by giving new shape to what has been created by the hand of Nature.

Le Dolomiti patrimonio dell’umanità. Si sta avvicinando il momento che attendiamo da anni. Nelle prossime settimane l’Unesco
deciderà se inserire le montagne più belle del mondo nella speciale lista dei beni naturali che vale la pena di vedere. Noi ne
siamo convinti da sempre e per quattro anni abbiamo lavorato con convinzione a questo progetto. Ora aspettiamo con fiducia.
Consapevoli dell’importanza straordinaria che ha per le Dolomiti e per il turismo, l’eventuale inserimento nella lista dei beni
considerati patrimonio dell’umanità. Il nostro territorio infatti ospita oltre il 70 per cento di queste montagne uniche al mondo, ma
è grazie alla concreta collaborazione attivata con le Province di Trento, Bolzano, Udine e Pordenone che questo sogno si potrà
avverare. Il nostro futuro passa anche da questa attesa decisione che presuppone ulteriori modalità di valorizzazione del sistema
turistico dolomitico.

The Dolomites, a world heritage site. The moment we have been waiting for
for years is finally just around the corner. In the coming weeks, Unesco will
announce its decision on whether the world’s most beautiful mountains are
to be included on the special list of natural assets that are particularly worth
seeing. We have always been convinced they should have a place on the list,
and have been working tirelessly on the project for the last four years. Now
all we can do is wait and hope, acutely aware of the extraordinary importance
Unesco’s decision will have for the Dolomites and for tourism here. Over 70%
of these unique mountains lie within our area, but if our dream does indeed
come true it will also be thanks to the active collaboration of the Provinces of
Trent, Bolzano, Udine and Pordenone. Part of our future rests on this longawaited
decision, which will hopefully contribute to enhancing tourism here in
the Dolomites.

MOSTRA/Exhibition Andrea Brustolon
Belluno torna al centro dell’attenzione internazionale con un altro importante evento
espositivo dedicato ad un protagonista assoluto del barocco veneziano. Le
opere di Andrea Brustolon (Belluno 1662 - 1732) geniale scultore e intagliatore,
definito il “Michelangelo del legno” da Honoré de Balzac, saranno proposte al
pubblico grazie alla prima mostra monografica a lui dedicata, che si svolgerà
dal 28 marzo al 12 luglio 2009 a Palazzo Crepadona, nel cuore della città
dolomitica. La mostra affianca i lavori del Brustolon alle opere di alcuni grandi
artisti del tempo che influirono sulla sua arte: da Parodi a Bernini e Piazzetta,
per quanto riguarda l’opera plastica, da Sebastiano Ricci a Giulio Carpioni, Pietro
Liberi, Luca Giordano, Vincenzo Maffei fino ad Agostino Ridolfi per la pittura.
L’evento è organizzato da: Comune di Belluno, Regione del Veneto, Provincia di
Belluno, Soprintendenza per i Beni Storici, Artistici ed Etnoantropologici per le
province di Venezia, Belluno, Padova e Treviso e Diocesi di Belluno e Feltre, con
il sostegno della Fondazione Cariverona. Curata da Anna Maria Spiazzi, la mostra
propone un allestimento di grande effetto firmato dall’architetto Mario Botta. Due
filoni principali caratterizzano l’esposizione di Palazzo Crepadona: arredi d’interno,
con committenze di famiglie nobili - bellunesi, come i Piloni, e veneziane, a cominciare
dai Venier - e arte sacra, con altari, angeli e suppellettili ecclesiastici. Molte delle opere
esposte provengono da prestigiose collezioni che permettono al visitatore di seguire
concretamente l’intero processo creativo dello scultore e la sua straordinaria capacità
di dare al legno, contemporaneamente, forza plastica e pittoricismo. Oltre alle circa 90
opere esposte a Belluno, la mostra è completata da itinerari sul territorio provinciale in cui
sono conservate fondamentali opere del Maestro e in particolare i suoi straordinari altari lignei,
oggetto negli scorsi anni di una campagna di restauri che li ha riportati all’antico splendore: dalla
chiesa bellunese di san Pietro al Museo Diocesano di Feltre sino alla Val di Zoldo e al Comelico. Belluno
accoglierà i visitatori della mostra con un ricco calendario di eventi e manifestazioni lungo l’intero periodo di
apertura dell’esposizione. Orario: tutti i giorni dalle 9 alle 19 (chiusura cassa ore 18), venerdì e sabato dalle
9 alle 20 (chiusura cassa ore 19).

The world’s eyes turn once more to Belluno this year with the opening of the major exhibition dedicated
to one of the leading exponents of Venetian Baroque sculpture. The works of Andrea Brustolon (Belluno
1662 - 1732), the supremely-talented sculptor and wood-carver that Honoré de Balzac called “the
Michelangelo of wood”, will be on display to the public during the first exhibition dedicated
exclusively to his art, which will take place from 28th March to 12th July 2009
in Palazzo Crepadona, in the heart of the city of Belluno. The exhibition will
offer visitors the chance to compare Brustolon’s works with those of some of
his finest contemporaries who influenced his art: sculptors from Parodi to
Bernini and Piazzetta and painters from Sebastiano Ricci to Giulio Carpioni
through Pietro Liberi, Luca Giordano and Vincenzo Maffei and on to
Agostino Ridolfi. The event is organised by: the Municipality of Belluno,
the Veneto Region, the Province of Belluno, the Superintendence
Office for Historical, Artistic and Ethno-anthropological Heritage for
the provinces of Venice, Belluno, Padua and Treviso and the Diocese
of Belluno and Feltre, with the support of the Cariverona Foundation.
The curator of the exhibition is Anna Maria Spiazzi, while the
strikingly attractive set is designed by the architect Mario Botta.
There are two main sections to the exhibition in Palazzo Crepadona:
an interior decoration section, featuring objects commissioned by
noble families from Belluno, such as the Piloni, and Venice, most
notably the Venier family; and a sacred art section, including altars,
angels and ecclesiastical objects. Many of the works on display
come from prestigious collections, and offer visitors the opportunity
to gain a superb overview of the entire creative process the
artist’s work followed throughout his life, and his extraordinary
ability to mould wood into uniquely expressive sculptures. In
addition to the 90 works on display in Belluno, the exhibition
is complemented by a series of itineraries that run through the
province and will guide visitors to a number of places where they
can admire significant works of the great artist, in particular
his extraordinary wooden altars, some of which have recently
undergone work designed to restore them to their former
splendour: from the Church of San Pietro in Belluno to the
Diocesan Museum in Feltre and on up to the Val di Zoldo
and Comelico. Belluno will be welcoming visitors to the
exhibition with a full calendar of events that are set to
take place throughout the exhibition period. Opening
hours: every day from 09.00 to 19.00 (ticket office
closes at 18.00); Saturday and Sunday from 09.00 to
20.00 (ticket office closes at 19.00).

L’altare delle meraviglie
In Val di Zoldo il capolavoro di Brustolon
Addossata sul promontorio che domina la bassa Val di Zoldo, la monumentale
chiesa di San Floriano (già inserita fra gli itinerari artistico-religiosi del
programma estivo “Tesori d’Arte nelle chiese dell’Alto Bellunese”) consacrata
nel 1487, ospita uno dei maggiori capolavori lignei dello scultore Andrea
Brustolon: l’altare delle Anime. Nell’edificio a navata unica, l’altare spicca
sulla sinistra e cattura lo sguardo di chi entra per la sua maestosa solennità.
Colpisce la policromia del complesso scultoreo, intriso di valori simbolico-allegorici,
l’attenzione anatomica dei due telamoni ai lati della tela centrale e degli
angioletti. La perfetta armonia dei volumi e la finezza formale, concorrono a
farne uno dei maggiori esempi del barocco bellunese in scultura.

Brustolon’s marvellous altar
The artist’s masterpiece in Val di Zoldo
On a headland overlooking the lower part of the Val di Zoldo sits the
monumental Church of San Floriano (one of the stops on the art and religion
routes of the summer programme “Art Treasures in the Churches in the North
of Belluno”). Consecrated in 1487, the single-chamber church houses one of
the finest wood sculpture works of the great Andrea Brustolon: the altare
delle Anime, or Altar of the Souls. The polychrome altar is located on the left
side of the church, and immediately captures the attention of visitors with its
solemn majesty, the wealth of symbolic and allegorical features and the superb
anatomic detail of the angels and the telamones that flank the central canvas,
which, coupled with the perfect harmony of the volumes and the formal finesse,
make the work one of the finest examples of Baroque sculpture in Belluno.

Alla scoperta del lascito dell’artista
In occasione di questo grande evento dedicato allo scultore bellunese Andrea Brustolon, la Provincia di Belluno si
è affiancata al Comune per offrire la possibilità anche di scoprire il vasto e notevole patrimonio storico-artistico
conservato nelle chiese e nei musei che costellano il territorio bellunese. Le numerose testimonianze dell’arte del
Brustolon e della sua bottega si possono ancora oggi ammirare nei luoghi per cui vennero create e questo regala al
visitatore la possibilità di comprendere perfettamente il contesto in cui nacquero e di godere appieno delle opere stesse.
Si è voluto quindi valorizzare tale preziosa ricchezza individuando sei luoghi emblematici della produzione di Andrea
Brustolon, che saranno aperti in occasione della mostra in giorni ed orari stabiliti e verranno segnalati da totem
informativi: a Belluno il Museo Civico e la chiesa di San Pietro; a Feltre il Museo Diocesano; in Val di Zoldo a Pieve di
Zoldo la chiesa di San Floriano e a Mareson la chiesa di San Valentino; in Comelico a Dosoledo la
chiesa dei Santi Rocco e Osvaldo.
A questi sei percorsi curati dalla Provincia di Belluno, se ne aggiungono altri diciotto per un totale di ventiquattro
itinerari che verranno indagati nella guida curata da Anna Maria Spiazzi e Marta Mazza della Soprintendenza per i
Beni Storici, Artistici ed Etnoantropologici per le province di Venezia, Belluno, Padova e Treviso.
Following in the footsteps of the artist

On the occasion of this major event dedicated to the great sculptor from Belluno Andrea Brustolon, the
Province of Belluno has teamed up with the Municipality to offer visitors the chance to discover the
historical and artistic heritage of the area, carefully conserved in the churches and museums dotted
throughout the province. Numerous works by Brustolon and his workshop can still be admired today in the
settings they were originally sculpted for, thus giving visitors the opportunity to gain a greater understanding
of the context in which the works were created and therefore appreciate them fully.
Our aim is to introduce visitors to these extraordinary local examples of Brustolon’s art, by identifying
six emblematic settings in which his work can be admired. While the exhibition is running, these places
will be open on set days and at set times, which visitors will find on totem signs: in Belluno, the Civic
Museum and the Church of San Pietro; in Feltre, the Diocesan Museum; in the Val di Zoldo, the
Church of San Floriano in Pieve di Zoldo and the Church of San Valentino in Mareson; in Comelico,
the Church of Saints Rocco and Osvaldo in Dosoledo.
These six routes set out by the Province of Belluno are joined by a further eighteen, giving a total
of twenty-four routes that will be covered in the guide edited by Anna Maria Spiazzi and Marta Mazza
from the Superintendence Office for Historical, Artistic and Ethno-anthropological Heritage of the
provinces of Venice, Belluno, Padua and Treviso.

Un percorso creativo ampio e articolato
An interesting overview of brustolon’s career
Il Museo Civico di Belluno presenta una nutrita collezione delle opere
del Brustolon e della sua bottega, a partire dal Cristo Crocifisso e dal
piccolo altare laterale proveniente dalla chiesa del Monte di Pietà di
Belluno. Frutto di diverse donazioni sono invece i fornimenti, tra cui una
cornice in legno di bosso con puttini e racemi vegetali fioriti, simili a
quelli che decorano la specchiera in pendant con la consolle
provenienti dal palazzo cittadino della famiglia Fulcisde
Bertoldi. Sono inoltre esposte tre opere che,
grazie ai recenti studi realizzati in occasione della
mostra, sono entrate a far parte del catalogo
della bottega del Brustolon: un crocifisso da
tavolo, un altarolo per devozione domestica
ed un portello di reliquiario a tabernacolo.
Il Museo espone inoltre diversi bozzetti in
terracotta ad ulteriore testimonianza del
percorso creativo dell’artista. Tra questi
lo studio preparatorio per la pala della
Crocifissione della chiesa di San Pietro, altro
luogo del percorso dedicato al Brustolon,
che insieme alla pala con la Morte di San
Francesco Saverio sono due delle opere
fondamentali della maturità dello scultore.
Nella Chiesa di San Pietro, a destra del
presbiterio si accede alla Cappella Fulcis,
decorata all’inizio del XVIII secolo da due
affreschi di Sebastiano Ricci e arricchita da
due opere realizzate dalle maestranze del
Brustolon: la statua raffigurante Francesco
d’Assisi ed il tabernacolo.

The Civic Museum of Belluno houses a large collection of works by
Brustolon and his workshop, starting from the Cristo Crocifisso and the
small side altar from the Monte di Pietà Church in Belluno. A number of
other decorative pieces have been donated to the museum from various
sources; these include a boxwood frame featuring small putti and stems
with clusters of flowering plants, similar to those that adorn the mirror
with matching console table from the townhouse of the Fulcis-de Bertoldi
family. Also on display here are three works that thanks to the recent
studies carried out on the occasion of the exhibition have been included
in the catalogue of Brustolon’s workshop: a table crucifix, a portable
altar for domestic worship and a door of a tabernacle reliquary. Among
the Museum’s exhibits are a number of terracotta sketches that provide
us with further evidence of the artist’s creative development. These
sketches include the preparatory study for the Crocefisso altar-piece
in the Church of San Pietro (another stop on the route dedicated to
Brustolon), which together with the altar-piece featuring the Morte di San
Francesco Saverio is one of the most important works of the sculptor’s
mature period. In the Church of San Pietro, to the right of the presbytery
is the entrance to the Fulcis Chapel, decorated at the beginning of the
18th century with two frescoes by Sebastiano Ricci and enhanced by
two works by the sculptors from Brustolon’s workshop: the statue of San
Francesco d’Assisi and the tabernacle.

Anche Feltre darà il suo tributo ad Andrea
Brustolon, infatti, in occasione della mostra
che si terrà a Belluno sul grande artista dal 28
marzo al 12 luglio 2009, Feltre ospiterà una
sezione di Arte Sacra del Brustolon presso il
Museo Diocesano, in Via Paradiso 19, centro
storico della città.
La Mostra si articolerà in vari momenti:
scultura, disegni, confronti con artisti
contemporanei presenti nel territorio e in
particolare con Sebastiano Ricci.
La sezione della scultura ospiterà diverse opere
tra le quali l’Assunta del Seminario di Feltre,
considerata il capolavoro dell’arte sacra del
Brustolon, i Quattro Evangelisti di San Fermo,
il Crocifisso di Plois d’Alpago, gli Angeli di
Igne e lo Scudo per stemma del vescovo protempore
proveniente dalla Basilica – Cattedrale
di Belluno.
La sezione dei disegni permetterà di studiare
il primo abbozzo su carta delle successive
opere scultoree. Provenienti dal Museo Civico
di Belluno vi sono studi preparatori sul tema
della Madonna Assunta, degli Angeli, di
San Giuseppe, del Crocifisso.
Particolare interesse avrà la terza sezione
della Mostra che darà la possibilità di
esaminare i molteplici legami che Andrea
Brustolon ha intessuto con gli artisti
contemporanei, primi fra tutti Sebastiano
Ricci. Di quest’ultimo il Museo Diocesano

La chiesa parrocchiale di San Valentino a
Mareson di Zoldo Alto ospita due altari realizzati
dallo scultore bellunese in collaborazione con la
bottega. Nella cappella sinistra l’altare della Santa
Croce svolge nuovamente il tema del Cristo deposto
dalla Croce rappresentato sulla cimasa sorretto
da due angeli. L’altare maggiore invece è l’ultima
opera progettata ed in parte compiuta da Andrea
Brustolon e poi terminata dalle maestranze della
sua bottega. In Comelico, a Dosoledo, la chiesa
parrocchiale dei Santi Rocco e Osvaldo presenta
invece un’opera della maturità dell’artista, realizzata
fra il 1722 ed il 1723. La nicchia centrale dell’altare,
fiancheggiata dalle due statue di San Filippo Benizio
e Santo Stefano, ospita il tema del compianto sul
Cristo morto, affrontato qui per la terza volta dopo
l’Altare delle Anime di Pieve di Zoldo e quello di
Mareson. L’altare di Dosoledo merita sicuramente
una visita anche perché è unico nel suo genere,
poiché presenta una superficie lignea brunita ad
imitazione dell’ebano e non dorata come invece è
solito trovare in altre opere realizzate dal Brustolon.

Battesimo di Cristo della Certosa di Vedana
del quale sarà possibile confrontare la copia in
disegno, realizzata dal Brustolon.

Museum
Feltre will also be paying homage to Andrea
Brustolon; on the occasion of the exhibition
in Belluno from 28th March to 12th
July 2009, the town will be hosting a
section on Sacred Art by Brustolon
within the Diocesan Museum, which can
be found at number 19 Via Paradiso,
in the historic centre of Feltre.
The Exhibition will be divided into

The Parish Church of San Valentino in Mareson
di Zoldo Alto houses two altars sculpted by the
great artist from Belluno together with apprentices
from his workshop. Once again here in the chapel
on the left, the theme is Christ being taken down
from the Cross; He is supported by two angels on
the cymatium. The major altar is the last work to
have been designed – and in part carried out – by
Andrea Brustolon; it was completed by artists from
his workshop. In Dosoledo, in Comelico, the Parish
Church of Saints Rocco and Osvaldo contains
a work from Brustolon’s mature years, sculpted
between 1722 and 1723. The central niche of
the altar, flanked by the two statues of San Filippo
Benizio and Santo Stefano, features the theme of
the mourning of the death of Christ, tackled here for
the third time, following the Altare delle Anime, or
Altar of the Souls, in Pieve di Zoldo and the altar in
Mareson. The altar in Dosoledo undoubtedly merits a
visit, since it is the only one of its kind, featuring as it
does a burnished wood surface in imitation of ebony,
as opposed to the gilded surfaces we generally find
in Brustolon’s works.

Brustolon’s masterpiece of sacred art; the
Quattro Evangelisti from San Fermo, the
Crocifisso of Plois d’Alpago, the Angeli from
Igne and the Scudo for the shield of the pro

The drawings section will allow visitors to
take a look at the paper sketches made in

Del rapporto tra alberi e uomini ce ne parla Toni Sirena, giornalista
e scrittore bellunese, che ha pubblicato sul Corriere delle Alpi
alcune affascinanti storie di uomini e piante, frutto di una ricerca
riguardante i “fitonimi” della provincia.
D. “Perché questo suo interesse per gli alberi?”
R. “Li ho sempre sentiti come delle entità vive, che vivono anche
dieci volte di più di un essere umano, che conoscono la sua storia e
la raccontano a chi ha cuore e orecchie per ascoltarla. In mille anni,
tanto può vivere un albero, hanno visto passare e sostare sotto la
loro ombra una moltitudine di soldati, pellegrini, pastori, greggi e
turisti, affrontando tutti i cambiamenti climatici. Gli alberi danno il
nome ai luoghi, ai paesi e ne conservano i miti e la storia. Almeno
fino a che qualcosa o qualcuno non li tira giù…come è accaduto
per l’olmo di Tomo, nel Feltrino, detto l’”alberon”. Dopo che le
motoseghe lo hanno tagliato, il paesaggio, segnato fino a quel
momento dalla sua presenza secolare, improvvisamente è mutato,
è diventato irriconoscibile e senza più memoria”.
D. “L’uomo e gli alberi vanno d’accordo?”
R. ”A volte è la stessa natura a farli fuori, come le frane o i fulmini.
Una cosa che mi ha stupito è che la saetta pare colpisca solo gli
alberi la cui corteccia si sviluppa girando in un senso piuttosto
che nell’altro. Ma tornando agli uomini, qui in montagna la cultura
contadina è sempre stata pragmatica nei loro riguardi, consapevole
che il bosco è una risorsa che va curata, anzi, come si dice
propriamente, va coltivata. Altra cosa è stato lo sfruttamento
“coloniale” degli alberi e del legname, come è avvenuto nel
Bellunese all’epoca delle miniere in Agordino e nello Zoldano, un
fatto che ha provocato gravi fenomeni di desertificazione, come
risulta dai documenti fotografici di quel tempo”.

Every tree has a story to tell
The relationship between Man and trees, as told to us by Toni
Sirena, a journalist and writer from Belluno who has published some
fascinating tales of people and plants in the Corriere delle Alpi
newspaper, and is an expert on local plant names.
Q. “Where did your interest in trees come from?”
A. “I’ve always perceived trees as living organisms. They can live up
to ten times longer than humans; they have witnessed our history
and have a great deal to tell us about it if we only have the heart
and ears to listen. Trees can live for a thousand years, during which
they provide shelter and shade to a multitude of soldiers, pilgrims,
shepherds, herds and visitors, through sunshine and rain, wind and
snow. They give their names to places and villages, and conserve
within them the legends and history of those places. At least until
they are cut down by someone or something… as happened to the
Tomo elm tree in the Feltre area, known as the ”alberon” (the great
tree). After it was sawn to the ground, the landscape, which until then
had been marked by the tree for centuries, immediately changed: it
became unrecognisable, deprived of its memory.
Q. “Do trees and men get along?”
A. ”Sometimes trees are destroyed by the hand of nature, for
instance by lightning or landslides. Something that struck me is
that lightning apparently strikes only those trees whose bark grows
round in one direction rather than another. But to come back to Man,
here in the mountains the country folk have always had a pragmatic
approach to trees, aware that the forest is a resource to be
safeguarded and looked after, to be cultivated, and never was a term
used more appropriately. Something quite different was the “colonial”
exploitation of trees and timber, as happened in the Belluno area at
the time of the mining industry in the Agordo and Zoldo areas; this
led to a massive depletion of forestry resources, as we can see from
photographs of the period”.

A Pradusel vive un faggio centenario: enorme e bellissimo, nato un paio di secoli fa.
L’escursionista può raggiungere questo luogo suggestivo partendo da
Cancellade o da Torner, località in comune di La Valle Agordina.
Si percorre la mulattiera militare del Monte Celo e, dopo una serie di tornanti
con vista panoramica sulla Conca Agordina e sul torrente Cordevole, si giunge in
località Pradusel; oggi silenzioso e solitario ma, un tempo, luogo di alti pascoli e di
vita contadina.
Da lassù si ammira un panorama davvero notevole e si assapora il silenzio della
montagna più autentica. Il rientro si può effettuare sullo stesso percorso oppure, i
più esperti, possono proseguire lungo il sentiero del Monte Celo fino a Malga Foca
per poi scendere all’abitato di Conaggia. Un itinerario di circa 6 ore di cammino
ideale dalla tarda primavera sino ad autunno inoltrato.

Pradusel is home to a huge, spectacular beech tree dating back a couple of centuries.
Hikers can reach this fascinating place by setting out from Cancellade or from
Torner, in the municipality of La Valle Agordina.
Go along the military mule-track of Monte Celo; after a series of bends offering superb
views over the Agordino Basin and the Cordevole Torrent, you will reach Pradusel,
which today is a quiet, lonely area, but which was once covered with high pastureland
tended by the local countryfolk.
From here there is a wonderful view that visitors can savour enveloped by the silence
of the mountains at their most authentic. You can retrace your steps back to the
departure point, or more expert hikers might like to continue on along the Monte Celo
path to Malga Foca and then walk down to the village of Conaggia. The route takes
about 6 hours and can ideally be tackled from late spring until well into autumn.

Il Cansiglio, la meravigliosa foresta dell’Alpago,
fino alla caduta della Serenissima era detto
“Bosco Grando di S. Marco”, o “Bosco da Remi
della Repubblica” o ancora “Bosco dei Dogi”,
perché riforniva i cantieri navali veneziani inviando
i migliori faggi per la costruzione dei remi delle
galee. Il Consiglio veneziano dei Dieci emise
numerosi editti e proclami in difesa della foresta,
con pene estremamente severe per i trasgressori.
Per svolgere il lavoro venivano istituite delle
compagnie di boscaioli detti “remeri”. Il pascolo
veniva bandito dalle zone boschive e tutte le
costruzioni dedicate alla monticazione, fino a un
miglio dal confine del bosco, venivano distrutte.

of the sea
Until the fall of the Serenissima Republic of Venice,
the marvellous Cansiglio Forest, in the Alpago
area, was known as “St Mark’s Great Forest”, “The
Forest of Oars for the Republic”, or “The Doges’
Forest”; this was because it supplied the Venetian
shipyards with superb-quality beech trees to make
the oars of the galleys. The Council of Ten, one
of the major governing bodies of the Republic of
Venice, issued numerous edicts and proclamations
in defence of the forest, with extremely severe
penalties for those who failed to obey them. In
order to carry out the work for the Republic,
companies of woodsmen (known as remeri, or oarmakers)
were set up. Grazing was not permitted in
the wooded areas, and any buildings constructed
for this purpose within a mile from the edge of the
forest were destroyed.

A partire dal XVI secolo, sotto il dominio veneziano,
si intensificò notevolmente il commercio
del legname che veniva impiegato
all’Arsenale della Serenissima oppure
utilizzato nell’edilizia, in particolare per le
palafitte su cui è costruita Venezia.
I tronchi, tagliati dai boscaioli nelle
vaste abetaie del Comelico e di
Sappada, venivano fatti fluitare
lungo il Piave ad opera di
squadre organizzate di

Il museo del cidolo e del legname
testimonia la storia dell’economia locale
All’interno del bellissimo giardino di palazzo Lazzaris si trova il
piccolo museo etnografico del Cidolo e del Legname, che testimonia
la storia dell’attività economica e sociale legata alla lavorazione e
al commercio del legno. Il museo illustra tutti gli aspetti riguardanti
l’attività di sfruttamento del bosco, dall’abbattimento, esbosco,
trasporto, alla lavorazione e al commercio, ma soprattutto racconta
la storia di Perarolo e delle migliaia di tronchi che ogni anno, fino agli
inizi del secolo scorso, giungevano attraverso il Boite e il Piave alla
dall’uno all’altro oppure dalla riva, liberandoli dagli ostacoli che sovente
incontravano lungo il tragitto.
L’illustre storico Jacopo Valvasone riferisce che nel 1534 Papa Paolo III
commissionò 20 larici della Val Sesis sopra Cima Sappada, poi impiegati
nella costruzione di Palazzo Farnese a Roma.

From the 16th century onwards, under the Republic of Venice, this
area witnesses significant growth in the timber trade, with local wood
being used in the shipyards of the Serenissima, or in the construction
industry, especially to make the pilework foundations on which the city
of Venice is built.
The tree-trunks, felled by the woodcutters in the huge fir forests of
Comelico and Sappada were floated down along the Piave River by
teams of zattieri (menadàs in the local Ladin language of Comelico, or
triftar in Sappada’s German-based dialect). Using crampons and long
poles, the trunks were guided all the way down the river; the zattieri
would leap from one trunk to another, or guide them from the riverbank,
pushing away the obstacles they often encountered along the route.
The illustrious historian Jacopo Valvasone tells us that in 1534 Pope Paul
III ordered 20 larch trees from the Val Sesis above Cima Sappada, which
were then used to build Palazzo Farnese in Roma.

A gestire il commercio e la trasformazione del legname erano le
famiglie di mercanti, la cui ricchezza è testimoniata ancora dalla
presenza di palazzi signorili.

The timber museum bears witness to the
history of the local economy
Set inside the superb gardens of Palazzo Lazzaris is a fascinating
little ethnographical museum dedicated to the timber trade and its
role in the economic and social history of the area. The museum
illustrates all the various aspects of forestry, from the felling of the
trees and transport of the trunks to their processing and sale; above
all, however, it tells the story of Perarolo and of the thousands of
trunks that each year, until the beginning of the last century, used
to come down the Boite Torrent and the Piave River to the artificial
dam, or cidolo (hence the name, Museo del Cidolo), where the
trunks were held back and divided up into piles according to whom
they were owned by (each trunk was marked with an individual
sign known as “marèla”), after which they were sent either to the
nearby sawmills or floated down the Piave to the Veneto plain on
the zattere, or rafts, that were loaded at Perarolo. The lucrative
processing and sale of the wood was managed by families of
merchants, whose fine residences can still be seen today.

Il bosco delle fate
Da bambina lo chiamavo il bosco delle
fate. Con la percezione che solo i
più piccoli possiedono, avvertivo già
da allora in quel bosco qualcosa di
speciale. Era molto tempo fa, molto
prima che un incendio devastante lo
distruggesse inesorabilmente. Proprio
lì venne successivamente edificata una
cappella con statua della Madonna. Per
raggiungere questo luogo incantato e
sacro si deve imboccare la Via Ambata in
prossimità della chiesa Regina Pacis, in
località Reane ad Auronzo. Dopo circa
300 metri si incontrerà una tabella che
“Metamorfosi” magiche
sotto la Marmolada
Due artigiani tramandano l’antico mestiere dell’intaglio
Dolomiti, non sono solo pallide pareti di roccia, verdi pascoli e romantici tramonti.
Dolomiti è anche fiaba, leggenda, mistero. A Sottoguda, all’entrata dei selvaggi Serrai,
antica porta naturale per accedere alla Marmolada, due artigiani, padre e figlio, usano
antichi strumenti per trasformare il legno in magia. Antico mestiere dei monti, l’intaglio
del legno è da sempre attività diffusa nelle nostre valli per la realizzazione di oggetti
utili alla vita quotidiana. Oggi, le grandi fabbriche della pianura sostituiscono questi
antichi mestieri e così la manualità artigiana diviene rara e preziosa. Dalla loro creatività,
dalle loro abili mani e dal vecchio albero escono visi di gnomi con lunghe barbe, folletti
dispettosi e splendide ninfe guardiane di un regno incantato e non ancora perduto.

Two craftsmen keep the magical art of wood-carving alive
There is more to the Dolomites than pale-coloured rock faces, green fields and romantic
sunsets. Our mountains are also home to fables, legends, mysteries. At Sottoguda, at the
entrance to the wild Serrai di Sottoguda gorge, since ancient times the natural gateway to the
Marmolada, two craftsmen – father and son – use traditional tools to give wood a magical
makeover. A trade that goes back a very long way in the mountains, wood-carving continues
to be a widespread activity throughout our valleys for making tools and utensils useful for
everyday activities. These days large factories on the plain have largely replaced these
ancient trades, and the handiwork of traditional craftsmen has become an increasingly rare,
valuable commodity. The skilful hands of these remaining artisans continue to shape the wood
of the local trees into the faces of little gnomes with long beards, naughty elves and splendid
wood-nymphs, guardians of an enchanted kingdom that has not quite vanished yet.

Fairy woodland
When I was a little girl I used to call it the
fairy woodland. That special sixth sense
that only children possess told me that
there was something truly special about the
place. This was a long time back, before a
massive fire swept through it, destroying
it beyond all recognition. After the fire, a
chapel was built on the spot, with a statue
of the Madonna. To reach this enchanted,
sacred area, take the Via Ambata near the
Regina Pacis Church, at Reane, Auronzo.
After about 300 metres, you will come to
a board showing the route and the time
required: 30 minutes. This is a place to
mediate and pray, but above all to listen;
and you will come away with a light, airy
sense of peace.

Maestri del legno si diventa
Woodcraft: the new generations
Le “scuole del legno” rappresentano una risorsa importante per la provincia
di Belluno. La formazione nel settore legno è da sempre avvertita
in montagna come un’esigenza primaria. La Scuola del legno di Sedico
è nata nel 1981 come “Progetto di intervento formativo per addetti alla
lavorazione artigiana del legno” grazie al Centro Consorzi. Dal 2003 la
Scuola dispone di una sede nuova, a Gresal di Sedico, con un grande
laboratorio di falegnameria completo di macchine professionali e aule di
informatica attrezzate con videoproiettore e banchi per il disegno tecnico.
Anche l’Istituto d’Arte di Cortina d’Ampezzo rappresenta per il territorio,
oltre che una grande risorsa culturale, anche un luogo “del sapere e del
saper fare” strettamente legato alla vocazione economica del territorio: la
sezione “Arte del legno” da decenni forma infatti professionalità che trovano
occupazione nel campo dell’artigianato artistico, della progettazione,
del design e dell’arredamento.

The “woodcraft schools” are an important educational resource for the
province of Belluno, in the mountain areas of which training in the wood
sector has always been viewed as a primary necessity. The Woodcraft
School of Sedico was founded in 1981 as a “training project for
employment in the woodcraft sector”, thanks to the efforts of the Centro
Consorzi association. 2003 saw the opening of a new branch of the school,
in Gresal di Sedico, with a large carpentry workshop containing a range of
professional equipment and computer rooms equipped with videoprojectors
and technical drawing workstations. The Art Institute in Cortina
d’Ampezzo is also an important cultural resource for the local area, as
well as a place where students can learn a trade that is closely intertwined
with the economic fortunes of their surroundings: the “Art of Wood” section
has for decades now been training young people to work in the field of arts
and crafts, in areas that range from planning and design to furnishings.

woodcarvers and sculptors,
who have left behind a number
of significant works here.
From the Baroque creations
of Andrea Brustolon, to whom
a major exhibition is devoted
in the town this year, through
to the contemporary works of
Raul Barattin, wood has always
represented one of the most
important local materials, symbolic
of mountain culture and a medium
that has inspired numerous
craftsmen, woodcraft schools and
events such as the ex tempore
wood sculpture contest held every
year in Piazza dei Martiri, the main
square of Belluno.

LEGNO - Un alleato delle genti di montagna
Il legno serviva a fare tutto: le case e i pochi mobili d’arredo, cassapanche per la biancheria,
madie e credenze per stoviglie e generi alimentari, sedie e “caregoi” (poltroncine più
comode, generalmente riservate alle persone anziane).
Ed ancora il legno era il materiale con il quale realizzare tutta una serie di utensili di uso
quotidiano: “el taier” (tagliere), i “mestoi” (mestoli), i recipienti per fare il burro o portare
il grano, “el bigol” per portare i secchi di rame colmi d’acqua, “la monega” per sollevare
e scaldare le coperte sulle braci ardenti, ed ancora “linzola e linzoleta” (rispettivamente
la slitta per portare il fieno e la slitta per trasportare i bambini sulla neve). Tutti questi antichi
oggetti, e molti altri, oggi si possono vedere nei musei e rappresentano una preziosa
testimonianza della vita in montagna all’epoca dei nostri nonni.
In Val Comelico il legno è sempre stato una
materia prima indispensabile per molteplici
usi: prima di tutto scaldarsi, cuocere il cibo,
costruire, ma con il legno nasce anche l’arte
dell’intaglio, molto diffusa in Val Comelico
sin dai tempi antichi. Ancora oggi molte
persone hanno la passione dell’intaglio del
legno, soprattutto maschere in cirmolo dette
in dialetto ladino “i vòlti”. Sono stati creati
dal Gruppo Ricerche Culturali a Comelico
Superiore 4 sentieri tematici che collegano
Marina Todesco, con la collaborazione di Barbara Fontanive
e del calendario edito dalla classe III B Scuola Media di Agordo
WOOD - An indispensable ally for the mountain folk
Wood has traditionally had a multitude of uses in the mountains. It was used to build houses
and their spartan furnishings – linen chests, sideboards and dressers to store dishes, cutlery
and food, chairs and “caregoi” (more comfortable chairs, generally reserved for the elderly) –
as well as to make a whole range of everyday tools and utensils, such as “el taier” (chopping
board), “mestoi” (ladles and spoons), recipients for making butter or transporting corn, “el
bigol” for transporting copper buckets full of water, “la monega” for lifting up blankets
and warming them over burning embers, as well as “linzola” and “linzoleta” (a sledge for
transporting hay and a smaller one for carrying children across the snow).
All these objects of yesteryear and many more besides can now be seen in the local museums,
and give us a fascinating glimpse of what life must once have been like in the mountains.

le 4 frazioni, chiamati “I TROIS”: dli maskri
(delle maschere), dli tradižion (delle tradizioni),
di bacani (dei contadini) e di mistieri (dei
mestieri). In ogni passeggiata sono presenti
molte sculture in legno scolpite dai bravi
artigiani della zona. Bellissime passeggiate da
fare in tutte le stagioni dell’anno fra il silenzio
dei boschi e gli spettacolari paesaggi. Inoltre
vengono organizzate escursioni guidate a
piedi, sia in inverno con le ciaspole, che
durante la stagione estiva.

In the Val Comelico wood has always been
an indispensable resource, with a multitude
of uses: first and foremost for heating and
cooking and for building. It is also used,
however, for the art of wood-carving, which
has been very popular in the Val Comelico
since ancient times. To this day many
enthusiasts of this traditional craft are to be
found here, and the local speciality are the
masks (“i vòlti”, in the Ladin language) carved
from Swiss pine. The Cultural Research Group
of Comelico Superiore has created four paths
linking the four villages that make up the
area. Each of the paths, or “I TROIS” as they
are known locally, is on a particular theme:
masks “dli maskri”, traditions “dli tradition”,
country folk “di bacani” and local trades
“di mistieri”. Along each walking route you
can see numerous wooden statues skilfully
carved by the talented local craftsmen. These
walks amid the silence of the woodlands and
the spectacular surrounding landscape can
be enjoyed in all seasons. Guided hikes are
organised both in summer and on “ciaspole”
snow shoes in winter.

La Galleria Romita,
il “salotto buono” di Feltre
The Romita Gallery, a showcase for Feltre
L’ex rifugio antiaereo, è stato ristrutturato. Il progetto ha previsto la rivalutazione della
Galleria dal punto di vista estetico e Feltre può vantare così un salotto speciale, un
museo e una vetrina d’arte da offrire a cittadini e turisti.
Le pareti sono state abbellite con immagini riguardanti la città ed il territorio. I pannelli,
in vetro anti sfondamento, sono corredati da didascalie disponibili in tre lingue (italiano,
tedesco ed inglese). Evidente quindi lo scopo informativo e didattico del progetto. Su
di un lato sono affisse fotografie che illustrano scorci del Feltrino (la loggia palladiana,
i palazzi affrescati, i musei), le iniziative culturali, sportive e gli appuntamenti principali
che scandiscono l’anno a Feltre. L’altra parete è dedicata invece alla storia, con foto
sulla costruzione della galleria Romita e immagini dell’evoluzione paesaggistica del
territorio feltrino. Nella zona centrale della galleria sono state posizionate otto opere
d’arte di artisti contemporanei, con vedute feltrine, temi di leggende e tradizioni.

The renovation work carried out on the Romita Gallery has given a former air-raid shelter a super makeover, and Feltre can today boast an
exceptional museum and art gallery that both locals and visitors are sure to enjoy.
The walls of the gallery have been decorated with pictures representing the town and the surrounding area. The renovation work was designed to be
of an informative, educational nature; hence the panels, in security reinforced glass, featuring information on the pictures in three languages (Italian,
German and English). On one side are photographs with views of the Feltre area (the Palladian loggia, the frescoed buildings, the museums), as well
as the main cultural and sports events on the town calendar; while the opposite wall focuses on history, with photos of the construction of the Romita
Gallery and pictures showing how the landscape of the area has changed over the years. In the central area of the gallery, visitors can admire eight
works by contemporary artists, featuring views of Feltre and subjects dealing with local legends and traditions.

Ecco una piacevole escursione attraverso
boschi, pascoli e torrenti dell’Alpago.
Partenza da Pianon di Tambre verso il
Bosco delle Fratte, giù fino alle sorgenti
del Tesa in località Caòtes, ampio pianoro,
prati curati, splendidi rustici. Girando sulla
destra si imbocca un sentiero che attraversa
un bosco di carpino e abete rosso e risale
fino alla rotabile di Mont di Chies d’Alpago.
Qui, segnalato, si incrocia il sentiero che
porta a Pian Formosa. Siamo sotto il Monte
Messer e Monte Antander (monti dell’Alpago
attraversati dalle Alte vie 6 e 7). Dopo circa
un km ecco l’omonimo agriturismo ed un’area
vasta e pianeggiante con mandrie di mucche,
pecore e cavalli al pascolo. Il nostro itinerario
prosegue verso Casera Antander. A circa
tre quarti del percorso, in zona soleggiata,
a 1.360 m di quota, ci attende un albero
secolare. È uno straordinario esemplare
di faggio, dalle dimensioni inimmaginabili,
che ha resistito alle avversità atmosferiche
per oltre duecentocinquant’anni. Una pianta
imponente, con una circonferenza del tronco
di quasi cinque metri e rami protesi verso
l’azzurro cielo che raggiungono i trenta metri
d’altezza. Percorso semplice. Da aprile a
ottobre. Tempo percorrenza h. 2.30.

Watching over
the Alpago

How about a pleasant
walking trip through the
woodland and pasturelands
and alongside the streams
of the Alpago area? The
route we suggest here
starts out from Pianon
di Tambre towards the
Bosco delle Fratte wood, then goes down
to the source of the Tesa stream at Caòtes,
where you will find an ample stretch of
tableland with mown fields and splendid rural
buildings. Turn right and take the path that
crosses a wood of hornbeam and Norway
spruce and comes out at the carriage road
of Mont di Chies d’Alpago. Here, beneath
Monte Messer and Monte Antander (crossed
by the Alte Vie High Mountain trails 6 and
7), you will find a marked path that leads
to Pian Formosa. After about 1 km you will
come to the Pian Formosa agritourist farm
and a large flat area grazed by cows, sheep
and horses. The route continues on towards

Casera Antander. Around three quarters of
the way along the route, in a sunny area at an
altitude of 1360 m, rises up the ancient beech
tree, an extraordinary, unbelievably large
specimen that has survived the vagaries of
the climate for over 250 years. The trunk of
this huge tree has a circumference of almost
five metres, and the branches that reach up
towards the blue sky are some thirty metres
high. This easy route can be followed from
April to October, and takes about two and a
half hours.

dAl “PONT dE lA MORTiS”
A nord di Belluno, alle porte del Parco Nazionale delle Dolomiti Bellunesi, si trova il Parco
Fluviale dell’Ardo, un ambiente di grande valenza geologica e naturalistica. Fra i luoghi
più spettacolari vi è la Gola del “Pont de la Mortis”, una forra molto profonda frutto della
millenaria attività di erosione del torrente Ardo. Dal centro di Belluno, in pochi minuti d’auto,
si raggiunge la Peschiera di Valli di Bolzano. Di qui, proseguendo a piedi per circa 500
metri in direzione “Case Bortot”, si incontra sulla destra, appena prima della chiesetta di
Sant’Antonio, una stradina che porta (in circa 25 minuti) alla caratteristica località Vial e
subito dopo al “Pont de la Mortis”. Dal ponticello, sospeso tra le pareti rocciose della stretta
forra, si apre un affascinante scenario: l’acqua, l’oscurità, il particolare colore rossiccio delle
rocce e la profondità dell’orrido creano un’atmosfera dal forte impatto emotivo. I colori della
primavera, data la variegata vegetazione della zona, regalano agli amanti della natura ulteriori
indimenticabili suggestioni.

A Valle di Cadore, in Borgata Costa, vi
è l’antica via romana dove è possibile,
camminando, tuffarsi in un passato lontano.
Un’atmosfera antica, che ci riporta a
tempi lontani. Addentrandosi fra strettoie
ed angusti passaggi si ammirano portali
ed inferriate lavorate a mano ed antiche

abitazioni, testimoni preziose della storia di
questo territorio.
La strada presenta ancora tratti di selciato,
segni dei carriaggi, ed un arco di pietra di
foggia imperiale.
Scendendo, si può ammirare la chiesa
di San Martino, eretta nel 1718 sui resti
di un antico castello romano, su uno
sperone roccioso, solitaria ed elegante, e
in alto domina maestoso il monte Antelao.
Proseguendo è possibile raggiungere
l’antico borgo di Damos, con la sua chiesa
risalente al 1500, ora disabitato.

North of Belluno, at the gates of the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park, lies the Ardo River Park,
an area of exceptional interest for geologists and naturalists. One of its most spectacular attractions is the deep “Pont de la Mortis” gorge, worn
away by the waters of the Ardo Torrent over thousands of years. A few minutes’ drive from the centre of Belluno will take you to the fish farm at Valli
di Bolzano Bellunese. From here, walking in the direction of “Case Bortot”, on the right, just before the little Church of Sant’Antonio, you will find a
little road that takes you in 25 minutes to the characteristic village of Vial and immediately thereafter to the “Pont de la Mortis”. The sight from the
little bridge suspended between the rock walls of the narrow gorge is stunning: the water, the darkness, the unusual reddish colour of the rocks and
the depth of the ravine – it is impossible not to be struck by such a spectacle. The rich variety of local plants, at their colourful best in the spring, is a
further unforgettable attraction for nature lovers.
The road to
the north of
the ancient
Romans
In the Borgata Costa neighbourhood, in
Valle di Cadore, you will find the ancient
Roman road, a veritable stroll back in
time, in an atmosphere that takes you
way back through the centuries. As
you venture along its narrow stretches,
you can admire hand-crafted doors and
railings and ancient dwellings that testify
to the history of the local area.
Along the road stretches of paving, signs
of baggage-wagon tracks and a Romanstyle
stone arch can still be seen.
On the way down, you can also admire
the Church of San Martino, built in 1718
over the ruins of an ancient castle dating
back to the Roman age and situated on
an attractive, solitary rock spur, while
above you rises up the peak of the
magnificent Monte Antelao. If you walk on
further, you can reach the now-abandoned
ancient hamlet of Damos, with its 16thcentury
church.

una montagna di SPORT
Partiamo dalle sponde del lago di Alleghe e
ci dirigiamo verso Santa Maria delle Grazie.
Oltrepassato il ponte sul torrente Cordevole
proseguiamo su strada asfaltata verso
Caracoi Agoin; dopo un paio di tornanti
lasciamo la comunale e svoltiamo a sinistra,
nel bosco, seguendo le tabelle indicanti
Sedolada. Di qui, sempre in mezzo a larici
e abeti, raggiungiamo Bramezza, antica
frazione della Regola di Calloneghe, le cui
origini risalgono al lontano 1100. Il piccolo
villaggio è attualmente abitato stabilmente da
una sola persona, ma si ripopola durante la

tra boschi e antichi villaggi
stagione estiva. Ci fermiamo alla fontana per
una breve sosta ristoratrice e, spostandoci
pochi metri più avanti, si apre alla nostra vista
un meraviglioso panorama sull’intera parete
nord-ovest del Civetta e sulle verdi acque del
lago di Alleghe. Per il rientro scegliamo la
carrareccia che attraversa gli antichi borghi
di Caracoi Agoin, Caracoi Cimai e Pezzè
intersecando a Saviner il tracciato che ci
riporta ad Alleghe.

Cycling
through
woodlands
and ancient
villages
This mountain bike route sets out
from the banks of Alleghe Lake and
heads towards Santa Maria delle
Grazie. Cross the bridge over the
Cordevole Torrent and cycle along
the asphalt road towards Caracoi
Agoin; come off the local road after a
couple of bends and turn left, into the
woodland, following the boards that
indicate Sedolada. From here, cycle
on through the larch and fir trees until
you reach Bramezza, an ancient ward
of the Regola di Calloneghe, whose
origins date right back to 1100. The
little village currently boasts only one
permanent resident, although this
number grows in the summer. After
some quick rest and refreshment at the
fountain, just a few metres in front of
you a marvellous view opens out over
the entire north-west wall of the Civetta
and the green waters of Lake Alleghe.
To return to the departure point, take
the cartroad that runs through the
ancient neighbourhoods of Caracoi
Agoin, Caracoi Cimai and Pezzè,
intersecting at Saviner with the path
that leads back to Alleghe.

Una teoria di
tornanti tra Carnia
e Cadore
Campolongo di S. Stefano di Cadore
(940 m) – Casera Razzo (1783 m)
Da Campolongo di Santo Stefano di Cadore,
lungo la strada provinciale 465 di Forcella
Lavardet attraverso la Val Frison, si è
proiettati verso la Carnia e Casera Razzo. La
strada da Campolongo a Cima “Marendera”
ha una caratteristica spettacolare, sale a zigzag
ed è costituita da numerosi “turnichè”. I
ciclisti risalgono lentamente questi tornanti,
contornati da un panorama spettacolare
e circondati dalle maestose montagne
denominate Terza Grande, Terza Media e
Terza Piccola.

60 km di corsa in montagna con 4000 m di
dislivello e in autosufficienza. Questi sono i
numeri della III edizione della Lavaredo Ultra
Trail, una tra le più importanti maratone
estreme d’Europa, che si svolgerà con
partenza da Palus San Marco (nel
comune di Auronzo di Cadore), nella strada
che da Auronzo conduce a Misurina, il 21
giugno 2009.

A 60 km self-sufficiency run in the
mountains, with a level difference of 4000m:
this is what awaits those intent on tackling
the 3rd edition of the Lavaredo Ultra Trail,
one of the leading extreme marathons in
Europe. The race, scheduled for 21st June
2009, will start out from Palus San Marco
(municipality of Auronzo di Cadore), on the
road that runs from Auronzo to Misurina.

Marendera you will find a typical little mountain
church, beyond which you can continue
on towards the Forcella Lavardet saddle
(1531m), leaving behind on your left the
Volontari Alpini Cadore-Feltre Refuge, run by
the Boy Scouts. From Forcella Lavardet, the
route continues on towards Sella di Razzo,
along flat ground with unusual vegetation for
this altitude on which herds of cows can be
seen grazing; this is also the natural habitat of
the mountain hare.

La disciplina del Nordic Walking è un’attività
sportiva completa, poiché utilizza tutti i
muscoli: durante la “camminata nordica” si
utilizzano, infatti, dei particolari bastoncini
che permettono di allenare anche la parte
superiore del corpo (braccia e spalle ma
anche addominali).
Gli itinerari di Nordic Walking possono
essere di varia difficoltà secondo il livello
di allenamento, solitamente partono dal
fondovalle e piano-piano salgono più
in quota, permettendo così al corpo di
riscaldarsi a dovere. La durata consigliata
è di circa un’ora e mezza, in cui è previsto
il riscaldamento, l’affaticamento e il deaffaticamento.
A Sappada è possibile effettuare una
piacevole escursione di Nordic Walking
partendo dal Vecchio Mulino in Borgata
Cretta. Si percorre il comodo sentiero che
risale dolcemente il corso del Piave, ancora
un minuscolo torrente, per raggiungere la
località Piani del Cristo.
Per chi vuole avvicinarsi a questa disciplina,
a Sappada vi è la possibilità di prendere
lezione da istruttori specializzati.

Nordic Walking is a fully-rounded sports
activity, because it exercises all of the
muscles; the special poles used make it
possible to keep in trim not only the legs,
but also the upper part of the body (arms
and shoulders, and also the abdomen).
Nordic Walking routes vary in terms of
difficulty level; they usually start out from
the bottom of the valley and gradually climb
upwards, thus allowing the body to warm

up appropriately. The recommended length
is around an hour and a half, covering the
warm-up, exercise and cool-down phases.
Sappada offers a pleasant Nordic Walking
route that departs from the Old Mill in the
Borgata Cretta neighbourhood and goes
along the comfortable path that climbs
gently along the flow of the Piave River, still
a tiny stream here, up to Piani del Cristo.
For those who would like to give this sport
a try, specialised instructors are on hand in
Sappada to offer lessons.

Tutte le bellezze di Mel in “cammino”
I dipinti delle chiese, la “giazzera” e la piazza rinascimentale
a portata di bastoncini
Il percorso parte dalla frazione di Nave (Mel) presso la Bruschetteria “El Mighelon”. Per strada asfaltata, superato
il ponte in direzione Mel, si svolta a destra raggiungendo l’abitato di Follo dove alla chiesetta, meritevole per la
sua ultima cena del 1500, si gira a sinistra per 100 m. e quindi ancora a sinistra percorrendo la strada in riva al
torrente Puner. Dopo una breve salita si raggiunge un capitello dove si prosegue a sinistra lungo la suggestiva e
famosa strada Carrera che conduce nel cuore del centro storico di Mel. All’uscita dell’arco si gira a destra e si
percorre una stretta via tra i palazzi che porta alla strada panoramica e quindi al Tempio dei Caduti. Scendendo a
sinistra per 200 m si rientra ancora a sinistra lungo il tracciato del percorso vita che attraverso un fresco bosco
porta alla giazzera, antico luogo dove si conservavano le derrate alimentari. All’uscita del bosco si segue a destra
la strada asfaltata che conduce nella splendida piazza cinquecentesca dell’abitato di Mel. Quindi si seguono le
indicazioni in uscita dalla piazza sino a ritornare a Nave.

A walk past all the attractions of Mel
The paintings in the churches, the “giazzera”
and the Renaissance square – all along a Nordic walking route
The route starts out from the hamlet of Nave (Mel) at the Bruschetteria “El Mighelon” restaurant. Walk along the
asphalt road and cross the bridge in the direction of Mel; turn right towards the little village of Follo, where you will
find a little church with an interesting 16th century painting of the Last Supper. Take left here for 100 metres, then
left again and walk along the road that runs along the bank of the Puner Torrent. A brief climb will take you up to
a little shrine, from where you should continue left along the attractive Carrera road that leads into the historical
centre of Mel. When you come through the archway, turn right and go along a narrow little street flanked by
buildings that leads to the panoramic road and from there to the Tempio dei Caduti, or Temple of the Fallen. Go
down to the left for about 200 metres and take left again along the stretch of the fitness route that runs through
cool woodland to the “giazzera”, where foodstuffs used to be stored in times gone by. When you come out of the
woods, take the asphalt road on the right that leads to the splendid 16th century square of the little town of Mel.
From here, follow the signs at the other end of the square to return to Nave.

Dalla gola di ghiaccio al lago dei misteri
Dodici chilometri tabellati da Sottoguda ad Alleghe
La partenza del percorso è a Sottoguda, nel Comune di Rocca Pietore, da
qui il tragitto segue la destra orografica del torrente Pettorina oltrepassando
gli abitati di Bosco Verde, Col di Rocca e Sorarù da dove, dopo aver
affrontato una breve salita, si raggiunge Pezzè. Dalla piccola piazzetta del
paese si svolta a destra, in discesa fino a scorgere Saviner e Caprile; si
prosegue costeggiando ora la destra orografica del torrente Cordevole e
ammirando di fronte la parete nord-ovest del Civetta. Arrivati al paese di
Santa Maria delle Grazie si oltrepassa il Santuario e ci si inoltra ancora nel
bosco scorgendo finalmente la meta: il lago di Alleghe. Si procede fino ad
arrivare allo Chalet al Lago nella frazione di Masarè, nostro punto di arrivo,
dove ci si può concedere una pausa ristoratrice comodamente seduti su una
panchina fronte-lago. La lunghezza del percorso, interamente tabellato, è
di 12 chilometri che possono essere percorsi in entrambi i sensi di marcia.
Naturalmente il percorso è fattibile anche a tappe e può essere intrapreso
da una qualsiasi delle frazioni sopracitate.
Dalla curatissima piazzetta
antistante la Chiesa di S. Lucia di
Vodo di Cadore, imbocchiamo
l’antico tracciato della Strada
Regia. Attraversando il paese
e proseguendo tra ondulate
praterie si raggiunge la strada
di Alemagna. Un breve tratto
della ciclabile permette di
arrivare alla frazione di Cancia
di Borca di Cadore. Continuando
per lo storico percorso
raggiungiamo la Chiesa di
San Rocco del XVII sec. e,
deviando a sinistra, scendiamo
in direzione del torrente Boite.
Superato il ponte, sulla destra,
iniziamo una breve salita che
ci porta su un sentiero tra
boschi e prati. Dopo mezz’ora
usciamo allo scoperto in una
zona stupenda immersa nel
verde. La frazione di Villanova
di Borca ci accompagna,
scendendo a destra, verso
gli antichi insediamenti dei
paesi di Taulen e Marceana in
direzione del ponticello sul Rio

Orsolina. Raggiunto il paese
di San Vito e percorrendo Via
Della Difesa, passando vicino
all’importante Chiesa B.V. della
Difesa (1490), raggiungiamo il
laghetto di Mosigo, smeraldo
incastonato tra i boschi ai piedi
dell’imponente parete della
Croda Marcora. Il ponte di
Geralba rimane l’obiettivo finale,
dopo aver attraversato villaggi
e natura e percorso 9 km in due
ore circa.

A twelve kilometre route, marked with boards, from Sottoguda to Alleghe

century Church of San Rocco,
from where you should turn off
to the left and descend towards
the Boite Torrent. After you
cross the bridge, a brief climb
up to the right will take you
onto a path that runs through
woodland and fields. About half
an hour later you will come out
into the open onto a beautiful
area surrounded by greenery.
The hamlet of Villanova di
Borca runs down to the right
towards the ancient settlements
of the villages of Taulen and
Marceana, in the direction of the
little bridge over the Orsolina
Brook. When you come to the
village of San Vito, go along
Via Della Difesa, passing by the
striking Church of the Beata
Vergine della Difesa (1490) and
on to the little Mosigo Lake,
an emerald-coloured jewel set
amid the woodland at the foot
of the imposing rock wall of the

The route sets out from Sottoguda, in the Municipality of Rocca Pietore, and runs along the orographical right of the Pettorina Torrent, past
the hamlets of Bosco Verde, Col di Rocca and Sorarù, from where a brief climb takes you up to Pezzè. From the little village square, turn
right and go down until you catch sight of Saviner and Caprile; carry on along the orographical right of the Cordevole Torrent, admiring the
magnificent north-west wall of the Civetta ahead of you. When you come to the village of Santa Maria delle Grazie, go past the Sanctuary and
venture back into the woods, from which you can spot your final destination: Alleghe Lake. Continue on until you come to Chalet al Lago in
the hamlet of Masarè, where you can reward your efforts with a rest and some refreshment seated comfortably on one of the benches that
look onto the lake. The route, marked with boards throughout, is 12 kilometres and can be tackled in either direction. It can also of course
be divided up into sections, and you can start out from any of the hamlets mentioned above.

Gli amanti dello sci alpino hanno da quest’inverno
una ragione in più per scegliere di trascorrere una
vacanza sulle piste del comprensorio sciistico
del Lagazuoi 5 Torri: la nuova seggiovia biposto
Croda Negra ed il nuovo skiweg Averau Troi,
che consentono ora il collegamento diretto dei
comprensori sciistici di Cortina e del Civetta alle piste
di Col Gallina, Falzarego e Val Badia.
La nuova seggiovia si sviluppa per circa 420 metri di
lunghezza e garantisce il collegamento tra la pista del
Fedare (passo Giau) e forcella Croda Negra, mentre
sul versante nord dell’omonima forcella si sviluppa il
nuovo tracciato, che si snoda attorno al Monte Averau
ed al cospetto delle Tofane e del Sasso di Stria, in una
delle zone più affascinanti del comprensorio sciistico
dell’area Lagazuoi 5 Torri.
I nuovi impianti hanno consentito l’eliminazione del
tratto di skibus compreso tra Bai de Dones ed il
Falzarego, ora raggiungibili tramite piste ed impianti:
diviene dunque strategica la posizione delle piste del
Giau a Colle Santa Lucia, dalle quali è ora possibile
raggiungere sciando il Falzarego e da qui, attraverso
la funivia Lagazuoi e la pista Armentarola, la Val Badia,
riducendo così di circa 40 minuti il tempo necessario
a percorrere il Giro Sciistico della Grande Guerra.
Un’opportunità da non perdere per vivere una vacanza
all’insegna dello sport e del divertimento, immersi in
un panorama davvero mozzafiato.

5 Torri ski area for their holidays: the new Croda
Negra two-person chairlift and the new Averau Troi
ski track, which provide a direct link from the Cortina
and Civetta ski resorts to the slopes of Col Gallina,
Falzarego and the Val Badia.
The new chairlift, which is around 420 metres long,
connects the Fedare slope (Giau Pass) with the
Croda Negra saddle, while on the north side of the
saddle is the new route, which runs around Monte
Averau and close to the magnificent Tofane and
Sasso di Stria, in one of the most spectacular parts
of the Lagazuoi 5 Torri ski area.
With the construction of the new chairlift, it is now
no longer necessary to take the skibus along the
stretch between Bai de Dones and the Falzarego
Pass, which can now be reached with the lifts or
the slopes: the position of the Giau slopes at Colle
Santa Lucia have become of fundamental strategic
importance, since visitors can now ski from there to
the Falzarego Pass and from there take the Lagazuoi
cableway and the Armentarola slope to get to the
Val Badia, thus slicing about 40 minutes off the time
necessary to complete the Great War Ski Tour.
This is an unmissable opportunity for ski fans to
spend an enjoyable holiday in a truly breathtaking
landscape.

Zancanèr il 21 e il 22 marzo 2009.

sci a tallone libero sulle piste di Falcade e
dell’intero comprensorio sciistico Trevalli.

Once again this year, telemark fans from the
Biois Valley will be meeting up in Falcade
for the 6th edition of the Zancanèda dei
Zancanèr, on the 21st and 22nd March
2009. The event, which changes year by
year, is reserved for all those who enjoy
free-heel skiing on the slopes of Falcade and

Lo splendido scenario della Val di Zoldo ospiterà nel
mese di marzo la finale nazionale del Trofeo delle
Regioni 2009 di sci alpino. Inserita nel calendario
nazionale Fisi, la prestigiosa manifestazione, organizzata
dallo Sci Club Ponte nelle Alpi “Bellitalia”, si svolgerà
il 28 e 29 marzo a Pecol di Zoldo Alto, con
protagonisti atleti Master provenienti da tutt’Italia. Le
gare si svolgeranno sulle piste “Foppe” e “Cristelin” con
il seguente calendario:
In March, the splendid scenario of the Val di Zoldo
will play host to the national finals of the Trofeo delle
Regioni 2009 downhill skiing cup. This prestigious
event, part of the national calendar of the Fisi (Italian
Winter Sports Federation), has been organised by
the Bellitalia Ski Club in Ponte nelle Alpi, and will take
place on the 28th and 29th of March in Pecol di
Zoldo Alto. The event is open to skiers in the Master
category from all over Italy, and will be held on the
Foppe and Cristelin slopes as follows:
L’ultima staffetta alpina
La stagione sciistica si chiude a Misurina il 4 aprile
Giunta alla X edizione, la staffetta alpina di Misurina è la gara che, nonostante sia
già primavera, chiude la stagione sciistica. L’altitudine di questa splendida località
ai piedi delle Tre Cime di Lavaredo, 1754 metri, e la posizione ideale permettono
infatti di disputare la gara in condizioni ottimali nonostante la stagione sciistica sia
pressoché terminata. L’appuntamento è per sabato 4 aprile sulle nevi di Misurina.
La staffetta alpina di Misurina è una gara a squadre, composte da tre partecipanti. Il
primo affronta 5 km di fondo a tecnica libera nel centro fondo Misurina, il secondo la
risalita del Col de Varda con gli sci di alpinismo, 2 km e 450 m di dislivello, ed il terzo
la discesa dello stesso tratto con gli sci da discesa in un tracciato da slalom gigante.
La partenza in linea della prima frazione è fissata alle ore 9.30 presso il centro
fondo. A fine gara premiazioni e spaghettata per tutti presso il ristorante La Baita.

40° anniversario della fondazione dello Sci Club Ponte
nelle Alpi “Bellitalia”.

The last alpine relay The ski season comes to a close in Misurina on 4th April
Now in its 10th year, the Misurina alpine relay race, held in the spring, brings the ski season to a close. The altitude (1754 metres) and the
ideal position of this splendid location at the foot of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo provide the perfect conditions for the competition, despite the
fact that it is held at the tail end of the season, on Saturday 4th April on the snow of Misurina. The alpine relay is a competition for teams of
three skiers. The first tackles a 5 km freestyle route in the Misurina cross-country skiing centre, the second the Col de Varda ski mountaineering
climb (level difference 450m, length 2km) and the third a giant slalom run down the same stretch. The first group will start out at 09.30 from
the cross-country centre. The competition will be followed by the award ceremony and spaghetti all round at the La Baita restaurant.

L’infiorata di Igne
chiama l ’estate

Anche quest’anno Igne, piccola frazione del comune di Longarone, si
addobba a festa per l’infiorata del Corpus Domini. Il rito, assai antico
e caratterizzato dall’abbellimento dei davanzali con petali di fiori,
si è trasformato negli anni e si presenta oggi con questa originale
scenografia. Da tredici anni infatti, su iniziativa dell’associazione locale,
si confezionano pazientemente e fantasiosamente fiori di carta crespa.
Igne per tale giornata si trasforma in un giardino all’aperto dove, tra
piante e fiori, protagonista indiscusso è il paese, con le proprie genti,
la cultura popolare e le antiche tradizioni. La via principale è decorata
da una moltitudine di fiori che creano angoli di passato e suggestivi
scorci variopinti. Ogni anno il tema della rappresentazione varia, dall’arte
ai vecchi mestieri, per non dimenticare quello a sfondo religioso.
Quest’anno, come di consueto, la tematica è a sorpresa. Vedere per
credere. Appuntamento fissato per domenica 14 giugno 2009.

La struttura delle case ladine si incentrava principalmente sulla
stua (il moderno soggiorno) la parte più importante della casa,
dove si pranzava e si accoglievano gli ospiti, e la cèsa da
fuoc (la cucina) ambiente utilizzato per l’accensione del fuoco
e la sola pratica del cucinare, divisa dalla stua per evitare
l’entrata di fumi ed odori. La stua era foderata in legno e era
riscaldata dal fornél (focolare chiuso), stufa ad accumulo di
grandi dimensioni e circondata da panche, sormontata da
un’impalcatura di legno sopra la quale poter riposare al
caldo mentre fuori nevicava. Accanto alla stua vi era lo
stangort, piccola stanza sempre riscaldata grazie alla
parete su cui poggiava la stua e utilizzata come camera
da letto per le persone anziane e per le donne con
bambini piccoli. La cucina, costruita in
pietra, aveva il focolare aperto ed un
arredamento molto semplice: attorno
al fuoco erano disposte delle
panche e dalla cappa del camino
scendeva una catena sulla
quale appendere il paiolo per
la polenta.

The flowers of Igne
herald in the summer
Once again this year Igne, a little hamlet in the municipality of
Longarone, will be bedecked with flowers for the Corpus Christi
celebrations. The ritual, which goes back a long way and originally
consisted of decorating the windowsills with flower petals, has evolved
over the years into the original spectacle it is today; for the last
thirteen years, on the initiative of a local association, the villagers have
painstakingly crafted beautiful flowers made with crêpe paper.
On this day Igne becomes a spectacular open-air garden replete with
plants and flowers, the pride of the local folk, who are strongly attached
to their popular culture and time-honoured traditions. The main street
is decorated
throughout with
a multitude
of beautifully
colourful flowers
that recreate
an atmosphere
of yesteryear.

theme, from art to
traditional trades to
religious subjects;
the theme chosen
is never revealed
in advance, so

Stua e cèsa da fuoc, ecco la casa ladina / Stua and cèsa da fuoc: the traditional Ladin home
Ladin houses were traditionally built around the stua (today’s sitting
room), the most important part of the house, where people would
have meals and welcome guests, and the cèsa da fuoc (the kitchen),
used only for lighting the fire and cooking, and separate from the stua
in order to keep smoke and smells out. The stua was surrounded by
wood panelling and was heated with the fornél, a large accumulation
stove surrounded by benches and with a wooden structure on top
on which folk could rest cosily while the snow fell outside the house.
Next to the stua was the stangort, a little room that was always
warm, thanks to the heat from the wall of the stua, and was used
as a bedroom for the elderly or for women with small children. The
kitchen, built in stone, had an
open fireplace and spartan
furnishings; around the
fireplace were a few benches,
and attached to the cowl of
the fireplace was a chain onto
which the pot for making
polenta would be hooked.

Torta “salada” alle gamaite
Ricetta tipica delle vallate Dolomitiche con le gamaite, spinaci
selvatici che si raccolgono tra primavera ed inizio estate sui pascoli
di montagna nei pressi delle malghe.
Ingredienti per 10 persone:
Ripieno:
gr. 500 di gamaite
½ cipolla tritata
50 gr. di burro di malga
sale e pepe q.b.

250 gr. di farina 00
125 gr. di burro
5 uova
1 dl di panna da cucina
2 cucchiai di parmigiano meglio
“Trentingrana”
1 ciotola di fagioli secchi
sale e pepe
Cuocere in acqua le gamaite ben lavate,
scolarle, tagliuzzarle leggermente, insaporirle
nel burro dov’è stata soffritta la cipolla, salare,
pepare e lasciar raffreddare.
Preparare una pasta brisée con la farina, il burro, 1 uovo,
poco sale ed un bicchiere d’acqua. Impastare e lasciar riposare.
Preparare 4 uova sbattute con 1 dl di panna, il parmigiano, sale
e pepe. Rivestire una tortiera con la pasta brisée, bucherellarla e
mettere sul fondo i fagioli secchi per evitare che la torta si deformi.
Dare una precottura di 10 minuti a 200°. Togliere i fagioli e sistemare
le gamaite, versare quindi sopra il composto d’uova e infornare
nuovamente a 180° per 15/20 minuti. Servire ben calda.

Savoury flan with wild spinach
This is a typical recipe from the valleys of the Dolomites, using the
gamaite, a sort of wild spinach that can be found on the mountain
pastures near the dairy farms in spring and early
summer. Ingredients for 10 people:
Filling:
500 grammes of gamaite
½ onion, chopped
50 grammes mountain dairy butter
Salt and pepper to taste
Flan:
250 grammes of “00” flour
125 grammes of butter
5 eggs
1 dl of cooking cream
2 tbsps of “Trentingrana” cheese
1 cup dried beans
Salt and pepper
Wash the gamaite well and boil them.
Strain, chop lightly and season with
the butter in which the onion has been
browned. Add salt and pepper and leave to
cool. Prepare a shortcrust pastry base with the
flour, butter, 1 egg, a little salt and a glass of water.
Mix the dough and leave it to rest. Beat the remaining four
eggs with 1 dl of cream, 2 tbsps of cheese, salt and pepper. Place
the shortcrust base in a cake tin, prick with a fork and put the dried
beans on the base to ensure it keeps its shape. Pre-cook for 10
minutes at 200°C. Remove the beans and spread the gamaite on
the base. Pour over the egg mixture and continue baking at 180°C
for 15/20 minutes. Serve hot.

con le “fortaie”
Le fortaie sono dei dolci tipici dei giorni di festa, molto conosciute
un tempo nelle cucine alleghesi delle nostre nonne che soprattutto
d’inverno, durante le lunghe giornate nevose, cucinavano con pazienza
e dedizione. La preparazione è semplice ma solo un po’ laboriosa:
si fa sciogliere il lievito di pane con latte e farina, si forma una
palla e si lascia lievitare in una terrina coperta con un canovaccio.
Si aggiungono poi i restanti ingredienti a temperatura ambiente:
burro, uova, sale, zucchero, grappa e limone e si mette a lievitare
nuovamente per circa mezz’ora. Si frigge in una pentola dal bordo
non tanto alto facendosi aiutare da un apposito utensile dalla forma
ad imbuto e dal lungo manico di legno (per non schizzarsi con l’olio
caldo) in modo da far scendere lentamente il composto. Ciascun
dolce prenderà così la forma a spirale, rigirandolo da entrambe le
parti finché non assume un aspetto dorato. Le fortaie sono ideali da
mangiare tiepide con una spolverata di zucchero a velo.

The “fortaie”: a sweet for special occasions
This particular kind of spiral-shaped doughnut is traditionally eaten to celebrate special occasions. Our grandmothers here in the Alleghe
area used to spend long, snowy winter days in the kitchen lovingly and painstakingly preparing the fortaie, which are not particularly difficult
to make, but do require a fair amount of work: first you have to dissolve some bread yeast in a mix of flour and milk, then shape the mix into
a ball and leave to rise in a bowl covered with a teacloth. Then the rest of the ingredients - butter, eggs, salt, sugar, grappa and lemon - must
be added, at room temperature, before leaving the mixture to rise for a further half hour. It is then fried in a pan with fairly low sides, using
a particular funnel-shaped utensil with a long wooden handle (to avoid getting burnt from the boiling oil) in order to ensure the mixture drops
slowly down into the pan. The doughnuts, given their characteristic spiral shape by the utensil used, are turned over in the oil until they take
on a nice golden colour on both sides. The fortaie are delicious eaten warm, with a sprinkling of icing sugar.

indiscussa al rifugio Averau, raggiungibile in motoslitta. Dopo cena, le emozioni continuano sotto le stelle:
a piedi, in motoslitta o con gli sci, si scende lungo la pista rischiarata dalle luci della seggiovia,
nella notte magica di Cortina. Solo su prenotazione.

Every Wednesday and Saturday until 31st March, Cortina
d’Ampezzo’s Averau and Scoiattoli refuges will be happy to
welcome you for an evening of good food and high-altitude thrills.
The chairlift leaves at 8 p.m. from Bai de Dones and climbs up
to the Scoiattoli refuge, where you will find a warm, comfortable
atmosphere and a wide range of traditional dishes awaiting you;
while at the Averau refuge, which can be reached by motor sledge
or on skis, the accent is on haute cuisine. After dinner, the thrills
beneath the stars continue, and you can go down to Cortina and
enjoy some great nightlife, along the slope lit up by the lights of the
chairlift, which you can descend on foot, on skis or by motor sledge.

La Camera di Commercio di Belluno ripropone anche per l’anno 2009 l’assegnazione del Marchio di
Qualità per le Imprese Alberghiere, un Marchio “a tutela dell’ospite” ovvero elemento distintivo “a garanzia
della qualità del servizio alberghiero”. Tale Marchio non sostituisce la classificazione alberghiera ma vi si
affianca quale ulteriore elemento distintivo.
Si sono candidate 7 nuove imprese che sono state ammesse alla selezione con le 47 strutture
alberghiere beneficiarie del Marchio nell’edizione 2008.
QUALITY HOTEL VENETO REGION
Fra gli elementi che saranno tenuti in considerazione dalla Commissione di valutazione camerale, con il
Bando 2009 è stato posto l’accento sugli “aspetti di marketing e promozione, e una gestione che valorizzi il patrimonio del territorio, proponendo
itinerari naturalistici e culturali, tradizioni locali, prodotti gastronomici del territorio, dall’offerta di prodotti “fatti in casa” a quella dei cibi locali. Sarà
tenuta in particolare considerazione l’adesione ad iniziative di rete promosse in ambito provinciale da Enti ed Istituzioni, con particolare riguardo
all’Associazione Strada dei Formaggi e dei Sapori Bellunesi”.
Il catalogo che riporta gli hotel con marchio di qualità è in distribuzione presso gli uffici turistici della provincia e la Camera di Commercio di Belluno.

Once again this year the Chamber of Commerce of Belluno will be awarding its “Quality Trademark for Hotel Businesses”, designed to ensure visitors
are offered a guarantee regarding the quality of hotel services. The trademark does not replace the hotel classification system; it is intended to
complement it and offer a further mark of distinction.
The 47 hotels that were awarded the Trademark in 2008 have been joined this year by a further seven.
The main elements taken into account by the Commission that awards the Trademark include “aspects of marketing and promotion, as well as a
management system able to make the most of the resources the area boasts, offering nature and culture routes, local traditions and foods and the
chance to discover “home-made” products and typical dishes. Priority will be given to those hotels that adhere to network initiatives organised at
provincial level by local bodies and institutions, in particular the “Belluno Cheese and Flavours Route Association”.
The catalogue listing the hotels that have been awarded the quality trademark is available from tourist offices in the province and from the Chamber
of Commerce of Belluno.

The Provincial Administration of Belluno, through Dolomiti Turismo and in collaboration with
the Confedilizia Property Owners’ Association, has set up the project “Quality Guarantee for
Holiday Apartments in Belluno”. The aim is to guarantee comfortable, quality accommodation
by getting the owners directly involved in the project. Upon arrival, guests will be welcomed
by the owner of the apartment (or someone acting on their behalf), who will provide them
with all the information they might require; thereafter, the owner can be contacted by phone
at any time during their stay. The apartments are provided with a full range of facilities,
offering guests an authentic “home from home”. The “Holiday Apartments in Belluno” guide
is available free of charge, in Italian and English, from all tourist information offices in the
province, or online at www.infodolomiti.it

now in its second year
Around fifty Bed & Breakfasts in the province
of Belluno have decided to join the second
edition of the “Quality Guarantee for B&Bs
in Belluno”. The Provincial Administration,
through Dolomiti Turismo, has set itself two
aims with this project: on the one hand, to
encourage operators in the local tourist
industry to pay full attention to the needs of
visitors and to improve quality; and on the
other, to provide visitors with information to
help them choose accommodation, as well
as reassurance regarding the services and
the conditions they can expect to find in the
B&B of their choice. All the B&Bs that adhere
to the project guarantee they are able to
offer a series of services and facilities that
will ensure guests have a comfortable stay
in a family environment. The guide is divided
up into eight sections, one for each of the
tourist areas in the province that have joined
the scheme. The particular features of each
B&B are described in detail, with a little
extra personal information on the owners of
each house. The guide is available free of
charge, in Italian and English, from all tourist
information offices in the province, or online
at www.infodolomiti.it.
