motivi ornamentali dell’architettura araba.
Tutto in un personalissimo
stile firmato Farella. ■
INSPIRED KNITWEAR
by ROSSELLA FUNGHI
Original and exclusive: knitwear designed by Farella
Margherita, Gaetana, Elisabetta and Maria: the Farella sisters. Four
women and a brand name by now a symbol of fine knitwear, and
not only on Capri.
They started out very young, doing it almost for fun. It was 1981 when their
mother, Nunzia, gave them their first loom to learn to knit on. The girls
experimented endlessly with weaves and patterns in a little shed at the
back of their garden, until they decided, in the rush of their enthusiasm and
newfound passion for the art, to open a shop with adjoining workroom in
via Fuorlovado.
A little bit at a time, the sisters added weaving and hand-dyeing of fabrics
to their repertoire. Coming up with satin weaves, braids and ribbing in relief,
multicoloured yarn effects, along with jacquard patterns and intarsia. The
softest cashmere knits, the coolest linens and the finest wools all took the
shape of cardigans, trousers, jackets, dresses, waistcoats and those
timeless shawls perfect for summer evenings.
All items are carefully attended along every step of the production process,
and Farella is always on the lookout for new combinations and new
weaves. A few years ago, to enhance their finest fabrics such as cashmere
and silk, the sisters rediscovered macramé, that weave of Moorish origins
that is achieved by knotting the threads of a fringe, creating patterns that
recall the ornamental motifs of Arabic architecture.
Sixteen years have gone by, and that shop and its workroom have become
an imperative stop on the itinerary for all those looking for an original and
exclusive piece of clothing.
For this summer, too, there are new models and new colours, but most
important, there’s the sense of pride in rising to the challenge, overcoming
the obstacles, and bringing the art of knitting back to life, reclaiming an
island tradition that seemed irredeemably lost. All in the most
personalized of styles: the Farella label. ■
