of the basilica, as well as the two side entrance flights of steps. These
actions were resolved by using the same architectural feature (treated
wood on a resistant sheet of weathering steel), so that visitors can
intuitively recognise the elements that mark the route.
5. Ambulacrum and area. This large area includes the uncovered central
square and the U-shaped portico that defines it. The most significant
actions in the project have been carried out in this area.
The proposal recovers the image of a perimeter ambulacrum raised
above the level of the square and also corrects the reconstruction of
the portico that was carried out in the 1970s. One of the first actions
consisted in removing the grass that covered the entire square and
reflooring the area using draining sub bases which, thanks to their
texture and colour, bring to mind the sandstone slabs that were part
of the original paving, of which only three samples are preserved.
However, the most notable intervention is the reform of the partial
architectural reconstruction of the portico, in the south-west corner
of the forum. A significant point of reference for visitors is maintained,
correcting its architectural characteristics in keeping with
the data provided by archaeological excavations, both with regard to
the Ionic nature of the portico as well as the type of roof with a single
slope (fig. 10). The project also pays special attention to adapting the
three entrances to the forum from the adjacent streets.
6. The tabernae in the southern part. This is a sector that, until now, had
not been very relevant in the itinerary of the forum visit. The action
recovers and explains the scheme, composition and use of this area
made up of 13 parts, with a regular layout in size. In addition to the
tasks to consolidate and restore the walls, visible structures and opus
signinum paving, the project insisted on tasks to adapt and give the
features (tanks, gutters, etc.) a museographical preservation to help
to explain the various activities that were carried out in this sector.
