Introduction<br />
The Roman city of Empúries is placed in the south of the Gulf<br />
of Roses (Alt Empordà, Girona), just west of the Greek enclave<br />
of Emporion and the ancient natural port. From a topographical<br />
point of view, it occupies the highest, flat area of the Empuritan<br />
hill (fig. 1). The fact that excavations have only revealed part of the<br />
surface area, limits our archaeological knowledge of the city (Aquilué,<br />
Castanyer, Santos, Tremoleda, 1999, p. 69-103). However,<br />
the data available indicates occupation of the promontory in the<br />
second century BC, as a consequence of the installation of a military<br />
camp with the aim of ensuring Roman presence in the territory<br />
(Aquilué, Castanyer, Santos, Tremoleda, in press; Aquilué, Mar,<br />
Nolla, Ruiz de Arbulo, Sanmartí, 1984, p. 36-47; Mar Ruiz de<br />
Arbulo, 1993, p. 186-192). The later founding of a new city, at<br />
the beginning of the first century BC, led to the definition of the<br />
