Introduction
The Roman city of Empúries is placed in the south of the Gulf
of Roses (Alt Empordà, Girona), just west of the Greek enclave
of Emporion and the ancient natural port. From a topographical
point of view, it occupies the highest, flat area of the Empuritan
hill (fig. 1). The fact that excavations have only revealed part of the
surface area, limits our archaeological knowledge of the city (Aquilué,
Castanyer, Santos, Tremoleda, 1999, p. 69-103). However,
the data available indicates occupation of the promontory in the
second century BC, as a consequence of the installation of a military
camp with the aim of ensuring Roman presence in the territory
(Aquilué, Castanyer, Santos, Tremoleda, in press; Aquilué, Mar,
Nolla, Ruiz de Arbulo, Sanmartí, 1984, p. 36-47; Mar Ruiz de
Arbulo, 1993, p. 186-192). The later founding of a new city, at
the beginning of the first century BC, led to the definition of the
