In 2009, after 10 years of archaeological excavations, work was finished
on access to the site of the archaeological remains at the Iberian
settlement of Sant Sebastià de la Guarda, Palafrugell. The work
performed was based on: the settlement’s location, the state of preservation
of the archaeological remains and the profile of potential
users. In this article, we present the characteristics of these three factors
and the spatial arrangement of the archaeological site planned
as a result.
Location
The Iberian settlement of Sant Sebastià de la Guarda, located in the
middle of the Costa Brava, lies in the municipality of Palafrugell,
Catalonia. According to data from 2010, the municipality has a
population of 22,622 inhabitants distributed between the towns of
Palafrugell, four kilometres inland, and three other coastal towns
lying in the same municipality: Callela, Llafranc and Tamariu.
Specifically, the archaeological site is located at the peak of a 164
metre high mountain, making it an excellent observation point of
the coast with enormous cliffs meeting the sea to the east. To the
south the mountain descends steeply to the coastal town of Llafranc
and more gently to the north and west until reaching the plain of
Palafrugell. The peak of the mountain can be accessed by car via the
roads from Llafranc and Palafrugell.
Currently, urban development is limited to the southern flank of
the mountain where houses extend from the town of Llafranc, at
sea level, and almost reach the peak on the coastal side. Some newly
constructed houses reach the edge of the archaeological site to the
north. The rest of the territory is covered by an extensive forest of
young pines. The overall image of the mountain, except for the
southern slope, is of a large green space.
