Abstract<br />

archeonet is a research developed within the Faculty of Archi- Archi-<br />

tecture of Genoa and financed by the Italian Ministry of Universities<br />

and Research.<br />

aiM of Archeonet is the valorisation of the cultural and natural<br />

Italian heritage through the development of archaeological sites,<br />

museums that manage them and geographical areas in which these<br />

sites are. The basic idea of this research is that the economical resources<br />

produced by mass tourism can be partly readdressed and<br />

redistributed along the territory in order to promote other areas where<br />

there are important sites of historical and cultural interest, but not yet<br />

included in the chain of international tourism.<br />

two are the Main assUMPtions: 1) Italy is the country with<br />

the highest concentration of preserved cultural sites in the world,<br />

but with the lowest confluence of tourists. 2) The Italian territory,<br />

thanks to a favourable geographical collocation in the heart of the<br />

Mediterranean sea and a coastal extension of over 7,500 km, has<br />

always been one of the favourite destinations of beach mass tourism.<br />

In a paradoxical way the investments for the preservation and promotion<br />

of cultural heritage aren’t adequate for the richness of historical<br />

evidence found in Italy and, at the same time, a bad management<br />

of the coastal landscape and a failure to supply the offer of services<br />
