Abstract archeonet is a research developed within the Faculty of Archi- Archi- tecture of Genoa and financed by the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research. aiM of Archeonet is the valorisation of the cultural and natural Italian heritage through the development of archaeological sites, museums that manage them and geographical areas in which these sites are. The basic idea of this research is that the economical resources produced by mass tourism can be partly readdressed and redistributed along the territory in order to promote other areas where there are important sites of historical and cultural interest, but not yet included in the chain of international tourism. two are the Main assUMPtions: 1) Italy is the country with the highest concentration of preserved cultural sites in the world, but with the lowest confluence of tourists. 2) The Italian territory, thanks to a favourable geographical collocation in the heart of the Mediterranean sea and a coastal extension of over 7,500 km, has always been one of the favourite destinations of beach mass tourism. In a paradoxical way the investments for the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage aren’t adequate for the richness of historical evidence found in Italy and, at the same time, a bad management of the coastal landscape and a failure to supply the offer of services 164
together with non competitive prices on international market, has caused a crisis also to the mass tourism industry. The argumentation of Archeonet is to make possible, through a radical rethink of strategies of national territorial marketing, the proposal of a new tourist offer for Italy, where Heritage and Leisure play a balanced and complementary role, having an effect on Landscape through actions which are sustainable and eco-friendly and, at the same time, innovative and transformative. The oPerative tool to use to systematize Archaeology, Landscape and Tourism is the widesPread MUseUM: a new pattern of preservation and promotion that is created by a series of concrete actions that involve institutions, managerial corporations and investors. The historical architectures and the naturalistic wonders of our country are inserted in a continue network of museums organized on a large territory, configuring a new management system able to preserve, valorise and promote the Italian heritage. Research phases. The research proceeds through subsequent mappings of the territory: from Europe, to Italy, to the paradigmatic case study of the Liguria region. eUroPe - MaPs and Plots. Open air Museums, Eco-museums, Archaeological Museums and Parks are all changing the strengthened and a little outdated idea that we’ve always had about archaeology. Starting from the mapping of the most interesting case studies, where archaeological heritage, naturalistic landscape and offer of general services are connected to each others by a network made up of infrastructures, architectures and well-advanced management patterns, one investigates into the patterns through which European people are organizing networks of museums and integrated systems of territorial management. italy - MaPs and Plots. Even if the Widespread Museum is not a juridical pattern in Italy, on the territory there already exist 17 integrated systems of heritage, museum and landscape that are called Widespread Museums. These new realities are analyzed using the same parameters of the European case studies, in order to find both their strengths and weaknesses and their managerial and economical structure. 165
