Foreword The PRIN Research Project funded by MIUR for the biennium 2010-2011 has the title: “The intervention in the archaeological sites for activities related to museum and cultural communication. Selection of significant works, preparation of a technical-operative manual, design of sample areas”. The program is led by the following universities: - Politecnico di Torino, Dipartimento di Progettazione Architettonica e di Disegno Industriale; - Politecnico di Milano, Dipartimento di Progettazione dell’Architettura; - Università degli Studi di Genova, Dipartimento di Progettazione e Costruzione dell’Architettura; - Università degli Studi di Palermo, Dipartimento di Progetto e Costruzione dell’Architettura; - Università di Roma “La Sapienza”, Dipartimento di Architettura closely with Superintendents, architects and experts in the field of museography and museology. The research is structured along the following work lines: - the spread museum (to look for the real integration between landscape and archaeological heritage) - expose the memory (to think in terms of “nodes” and “paths” to a museum inside urban spread) - architecture for urban archaeology (to answer specific technical questions and museological shell) - set up the old (to think about the major events of culture and art in the archaeological sites and the relationship between archaeology and entertainment) - exhibition on archaeological sites (technical implications and design guidelines). 12
The first results of the research are illustrated during this Conference, which sees the comparison among high-profile experts from different countries of the European Community and the Research Units of Genoa, Milan, Palermo, Rome and Turin. The topics on which the Research Units have worked are the following: a) criteria and methods of approach related to: - communication; - management; - accessibility; - the museum formula; - the plant; - the geomorphologic situation of the archaeological site; - the exhibit design; b) pilot cases, projects and interventions in archaeological sites. The debate in the conference among the issues mentioned above and the interventions by external speakers have developed key operational verifications (case studies presented in the first day of the conference provided several elements of comparison of methodological and practical construction) and at the same time they highlighted a framework of policies and procedures referring to value guidelines; these in the contributions listed in the proceedings are mutually interrelated, giving rise to a record agile but rich in elements of complexity, respecting the spirit and objectives of PRIN. To complete the themes discussed in the first day of the conference, the second day developed insights into both individual issues and topics of study carried out by experts on the subject, and themes discussed by the individual Research Units, thus providing a very broad articulation: 13
