La prima edizione del Premio Internazionale “Sicilianità nel Mondo”, alle
Gole dell’Alcantara, è stata assegnata a Giuseppe Mannino.
Avvocato, poeta, scrittore, scultore, già presidente del Consiglio Comunale
di Roma, originario di Graniti. Un siciliano trasferitosi a Roma
che non ha mai dimenticato le radici isolane.
Il 6 ottobre 2007, è stato incaricato dalla TREC di illustrare il DON CHISCIOTTE
in edizione pregiata. Vive ed opera prevalentemente a Berlino dove sta eseguendo
una serie di grandi sculture e scenografie teatrali e dove sta completando alcuni
testi, cui attende da anni: una raccolta di saggi politico-filosofici dal titolo
“I GRANDI CRETINI DELLA STORIA” e una raccolta di poesie dal titolo
“MAMMA LI TURCHI”, che, nonostante il titolo, è un omaggio ai grandi turchi
da Rumi ad Ataturk.
“Che emozione ha provato a ricevere un premio così importante?
Grande. Nel mio percorso di vita le Gole dell’Alcàntara hanno rappresentato un
punto di partenza, così come lo è stata l’Etna, di cui sono una propagine. Le gole
dell’Alcàntara solo da qualche decennio sono diventate famose in tutto il mondo.
Non c’è persona che venga a Taormina e non senta la curiosità di visitare questo
luogo e non provi magari il brivido di immergersi nelle acque gelide, che escono
dalla pietra lavica.
Alle Gole dell’Alcàntara ci sono praticamente nato e cresciuto, così perlomeno a
me sembra.
Intanto sono andato, in volontario “esilio” a Berlino, una grande metropoli dove la
multietnicità convive egregiamente con la multiculturalità.
L’opportunità di fare una mostra in Sicilia mi ha suggerito di raccontare, con i miei
linguaggi (pittura, scultura, parole e pensieri), il mio percorso più recente.
Quasi tutte le opere di pittura sono state realizzate a Berlino e sono su materiale riciclato
(cartone da imballaggio, tavole ecc.). Un semplice e comodo omaggio a tutte
le povertà. ■

Giuseppe Mannino.
Lawyer, author, poet and sculptor,
former president of the town council
of Rome, he was born in Graniti.
From Sicily, he moved to the capital
city but has never forgotten his roots
in the island.
In October 2007, he was commissioned
by the TREC with illustrating a
valuable edition of the Don Quixote. He
now lives and works in Berlin where he
is now working on a series of big sculptures
and as a stage designer, and he’s also completing the writing of two books
he’s been working to for years: a selection of philosophical-political essays “I
GRANDI CRETINI DELLA STORIA” (The Greatest Idiots in History), and a
collection of poems entitled “MAMMA LI TURCHI” (a folkloristic expression that
originated at the time of the Turkish invasions in Sicily), which is actually a tribute
to great Turkish artists such as Rumi and Ataturk
How did you feel at receiving such an important award?
It’s been a great emotion. In the story of my life, the Alcàntara – the place where
the award ceremony was held – has been the starting point. Just like the Etna,
which is very close to the river Alcantara. Now these places are very famous and
people come from all over the world to visit Taormina and the beauties of this land,
such as the river, with its cold waters, springing from the lava stone. I grew up
here, of it seems to me that I was. Then I chose to go into exile in Berlin, a big metropolis
where both multiculturalism and multi-ethnicity coexist.
This opportunity to have an exhibition in Sicily suggested I could tell my most recent
stories using my usual language – painting, sculpture, words and thoughts.
Almost all his works on show were made in Berlin. He has used recycled materials
such as packing cardboard, crates and other. A simple, easy way to pay tribute
to all poverties. ■
