“monti pallidi”: Salvàns, principesse, mjanines, streghe, marmotte, …
a sciabola.
A nature trail
at the foot of the
Marmolada:
the clearings
Sottoguda - La Mandra – Piegn – Franzei – Lèch dei Giai
Time required: approx. 3 hours, from Sottoguda to Franzei
immediately after the picnic area on the road for malga Ciapela, three
bends after the little village of Sottoguda, take the pedestrian forest
road which leads through typical Dolomite woodland of Norway spruce
and larch to the Franzei basin. The muletrack, which is fairly steep
from the outset, becomes briefly less so towards the clearing at La
mandra; here, as soon as man stopped stock-raising and haymaking,
the woods have quickly grown back again.
The path then begins to climb up again, and after about forty
minutes’ walk, you reach piegn. On the left there is another clearing,
with drinking troughs (festii), springs, and an old, historical
mountain hut. peace and silence. At the end of the clearing you
can see some splendid, century-old specimens of Norway spruce
watching over the wood and its bashful animals. As you continue on
upwards round hairpin bends and through wonderful scenery, you
can admire marvellous larch trees of all sorts of shapes: straight,
twisted and sabre-shaped, standing there perfectly still, almost
immortal, each with its own, long story, ravaged perhaps by wind,
snow or thunderbolts. The trail takes you to the Franzei basin and
its typical mountain
huts, where the hay
used to be stored
before later being
transported down
to the valley in the
winter on sledges.
Words cannot
describe the beauty
of this place, and the
sense of purity and
peace which reign here. The more audacious among you may like to
continue on to the Lèch dei Giai, a small natural lake characterized
by the clear-cut separation of two geological formations, one lightcoloured
one of calcareous origin and another dark-coloured one of
volcanic origin. A truly fantastic place!
Hike to the FANES WATERFA L
The Dolomiti d’Ampezzo Natural park is a veritable jewel of nature,
full of unique, fascinating corners to explore. The protected area
governed by the regole d’Ampezzo, the ancient community of the
original native families of Cortina d’Ampezzo, lies amid the mountain
groups of the Tofane, Fanes, Col Bechei, Croda rossa d’Ampezzo and
Cristallo, and covers the val Travenanzes, the upper Boite valley
and the val Felizon. Torrents of the same name run down these
valleys, and when the ice and snow begin to melt in the spring,
the swelling waters afford a spectacular demonstration of the
extraordinary force of mother Nature. The val di Fanes boasts two
stunning, powerful waterfalls, among the highest in the whole area
of the Dolomites. Across the pleasant pastureland of pian de Loa,
where you can admire one of the monumental trees of the park,
The Senes Plateau - a mystic experience
Spring is the ideal time to refresh and recharge both the body and the spirit,
and a simple walk in the woods can also become a fine opportunity for
meditation. You will be highly unlikely to find anyone to break the silence or
interrupt your train of thought as you walk along our paths. Leave the village
of San vito and its Stone Giant behind you, and take the path which runs
through the trees. As you make your way into the wood, let your thoughts
flow freely. Listen to your own footsteps, the rustling of the leaves, the
twittering of the birds. You are all alone; as if by magic, you realise that your
thoughts have changed: all your worries, fears and anxiety have vanished
into thin air, and seem light years away. Listen to the river flowing in the distance;
feel your breathing become slowly heavier as you climb up the gentle
slope and become absorbed in this natural environment which can give you
a 135cm-diameter Norway Spruce, a path leads into the woods
and soon takes you to a viewpoint from where you can marvel at
the spectacular, huge waterfall created by the waters which come
crashing down from the bleak, barren plateaus which are home to
the marmots, in the kingdom of the legendary princess Dolasilla…
The expert nature guides of the Sui Sentieri dei Salvàns® association
offer a packed programme of nature hikes and environmental
education trips, suitable for both adults and children. An
unmissable opportunity to discover, in complete safety, the magic
atmosphere which envelops the Dolomiti d’Ampezzo Natural park,
following in the footsteps of the multitude of legendary creatures
which people the folklore of these “pale mountains”: Salvàns,
princesses, mjanines, witches, marmots, …
such a sense of calm, of peace. The wood is dark, with only the occasional
ray of sunlight breaking through the trees and the path seems never-ending;
but all of a sudden, the wood opens up and the Stone Giant you’ve
just left behind rises up before you. The Antelao appears in front of you, an
enormous, majestic stone pyramid, so immense that the village of San vito,
at the foot of the mountain, almost seems to disappear. As you feel the sun
on your face and admire such wondrous natural beauty, you cannot but feel
a huge sense of gratitude, of sheer joy at being a part of such a harmonious,
enchanting whole.
