Three days with
THE GIrO’S PINk CArAVAN
A symbol of the Dolomites, a temple of sport, the kingdom of eagles. In the shadow
of these serene, silent rock pinnacles, the decisive battle for victory in the cycle race
will get under way on the 27th of May
it will be the climbs in the Belluno Dolomites which will settle the outcome of the 90th Giro d’italia, and
the Tre Cime di Lavaredo will decide the winner. The cyclist who gains the maglia rosa in the shadow
of this rock giant, icon of the Dolomites and kingdom of the eagles, will stand an excellent chance of
keeping it until the finishing line in milan. Three passes, five climbs, a total altitude difference of 4,000m
in just 190 kilometres: the Dolomites stage of the Giro will be a never-ending rollercoaster of emotions.
The race starts out from Trent, and the climb from Ora to Cavalese is only a warm-up. The first truly
difficult stretch does not come until 85km later, when cyclists have to cross the San pellegrino pass
from moena, and then plunge down the extraordinarily steep descent into the Biois valley, from where
they then have to tackle the uphill stretch which leads to Colle Santa Lucia. Here, 9.8 km of hairpin
bends await them in the spectacular Giau pass between
Selva di Cadore and Cortina. The Giau pass is an incredibly
arduous stretch, with an altitude difference of 922 metres
and an average gradient of 9.4%. With its characteristic
lunar landscape, the Giau has for years been the most
challenging of the climbs of the “Marathon of the Dolomites”.
From Cortina, through beautiful scenery and sharp hairpin
bends, the eight breathtaking kilometres of the Tre Croci
Pass are a worthy start to the day. After misurina Lake, the
cyclists will come up against the awe-inspiring “wall”, the
hardest climb in the Dolomites: 3.9 gruelling kilometres
which lead to the longed-for finishing line of the Tre Cime di
Lavaredo. The average gradient is 12.2%, but at two points
it reaches 18%. The “wall”, which has been the finishing
line for a stage of the Giro on five previous occasions, has
always been decisive for the final result of the race. The
champion cyclist from Novara, Giuseppe Saronni, remembers
it well; here in 1981 he was forced to surrender to
Giovanni Battaglin. The stage, which started out from San
vigilio di marebbe, was won by Beat Breu from Switzerland,
after a breakaway which at the end of the Giro helped him
to obtain eighth place.
Le Tre Cime di Lavaredo, icona delle Dolomiti,
tempio dello sport e regno delle aquile. All’ombra
Tre passi,
solo come riscaldamento.
posto in classifica generale.
IN GIrO... col giro
migliori a livello mondiale.
Domenica 24 giugno avrà luogo una
classicissima del ciclismo per amatori
e cicloturisti, ovvero la Cronoscalata
del passo pordoi, una delle salite più
tecniche e cariche di tradizione dell’intero
arco alpino, proposta dalla locale
Azienda Turistica Arabba Livinallongo.
i ciclisti partiranno dalla piazza di
Arabba (m. 1610) per raggiungere
dopo 13 chilometri i 2240 metri del
passo pordoi. La gara sarà inoltre
l’ultima di una serie di competizioni
in italia e all’estero previste dal
circuito denominato AmaTour che
premierà il cicloamatore più regolare
della stagione. Una sorta di Coppa
del mondo amatori che conferirà alla
cronoscalata un tocco di internaziona-
GLIDING OVEr THE PEAkS
in the quest for a trophy
On Monte Avena, from 17th to 24th June 2007 the world’s finest
paragliders will compete for the title of Italian champion.
This 24th edition of the Guarnieri paragliding Trophy hosts the most important
event on the italian paragliding calendar: the 2007 italian Championship. in this
competition, the best pilots in italy will compete together with a considerable
number of the best foreign pilots for seven days of top-class paragliding.
Scheduled for 17th - 24th June in the splendid setting of the vette Feltrine, this
year the event goes back to its roots, by awarding a trophy also to hang-gliding
pilots. in so doing, the aim of the Feltre Hang-gliding and para-gliding Club is to
enhance the status of both approaches to the world of free flying. The high competitive
level reached by the italian national team in the last european championships
(Luca Donini won the title of european champion) and the excellent performance of
the pilots on the World Cup circuit has meant that entries for the event have been
limited to 140, chosen from the first 100 pilots from the italian national ranks plus
a representative group of the best foreign pilots.
