Ecclesiae” in these realities
and, where possible, the
“implantatio Ordinis”.
d) What is the future for
the franciscan missions?
First, involvement in
the “ad gentes” mission is a
response to a particular
vocation from the Lord and
it is, therefore, essential to
make the young Friars
cultivate, and be sensitive
to, such a vocation which,
thanks be to God, is not
lacking in the Order. Many
young Friars have the
desire in their hearts to give
themselves totally to the
proclamation of the Gospel
wherever Christ is not yet
known or accepted.
Secondly, it is very
important to prepare and
form the new missionaries
during the stage of initial
formation and, more
particularly, before setting
out on the mission. We
have the international
fraternity “Notre Dame des
Nations” in Brussels to
carry out this immediate
preparation. Two groups of
missionaries (English- and
French-speaking),
belonging to the three
franciscan Orders (Friars
Minor, Capuchins and
Conventuals), are formed
there for three months each
year. Another two projects
for the formation of
missionaries for the whole
Franciscan Family, in Asia
and Latin America, are
about to be launched – and
which we hope can be
realised soon.
Thirdly, we are
encouraging the young
Entities of Africa and Asia
to become missionaries, to
be subjective protagonists
in the missions, and the
Province of South Africa
has already opened a
mission in Namibia, the
Province of the Incarnate
Word has opened a mission
in Burkina Faso and is
preparing another in
Ghana, the East Asia
Conference (EAC) in
committing itself to the
support of the Foundation
in Myanmar. The future of
the missions in Africa is
being entrusted to the
Friars of Africa and of those
in Asia to the Friars of Asia.
We will now have a
panoramic view of our
missionary presence in the
world arranged by theme,
the cultural and religious
contexts: Franciscan
evangelisation among the
cultures and religions of the
world.

Francesco come uomo di pace, al quale
tanti guardano con simpatia anche da altre
posizioni culturali e religiose. Al tempo stesso,
la luce del Poverello su quell’iniziativa era una
garanzia di autenticità cristiana, giacché la sua
vita e il suo messaggio poggiano così visibilmente
sulla scelta di Cristo, da respingere a
priori qualunque tentazione di indifferentismo
religioso, che nulla avrebbe a che vedere con
l’autentico dialogo interreligioso. Lo "spirito di
Assisi", che da quell’evento continua a diffondersi
nel mondo, si oppone allo spirito di violenza,
all’abuso della religione come pretesto
per la violenza. Assisi ci dice che la fedeltà alla
propria convinzione religiosa, la fedeltà soprattutto
a Cristo crocifisso e risorto non si esprime
in violenza e intolleranza, ma nel sincero rispetto
dell’altro, nel dialogo, in un annuncio che
fa appello alla libertà e alla ragione, nell’impegno
per la pace e per la riconciliazione. Non
potrebbe essere atteggiamento evangelico, né
francescano, il non riuscire a coniugare l’accoglienza,
il dialogo e il rispetto per tutti con la certezza di fede che ogni cristiano, al pari
del Santo di Assisi, è tenuto a coltivare, annunciando Cristo come via, verità e vita
dell’uomo (cfr Gv 14,6), unico Salvatore del mondo.
