and, where possible, the<br />
“implantatio Ordinis”.<br />
d) What is the future for<br />
the franciscan missions?<br />
First, involvement in<br />
the “ad gentes” mission is a<br />
response to a particular<br />
vocation from the Lord and<br />
it is, therefore, essential to<br />
make the young Friars<br />
cultivate, and be sensitive<br />
to, such a vocation which,<br />
thanks be to God, is not<br />
lacking in the Order. Many<br />
young Friars have the<br />
desire in their hearts to give<br />
themselves totally to the<br />
proclamation of the Gospel<br />
wherever Christ is not yet<br />
known or accepted.<br />
Secondly, it is very<br />
important to prepare and<br />
form the new missionaries<br />
during the stage of initial<br />
formation and, more<br />
particularly, before setting<br />
out on the mission. We<br />
have the international<br />
fraternity “Notre Dame des<br />
Nations” in Brussels to<br />
carry out this immediate<br />
preparation. Two groups of<br />
missionaries (English- and<br />
French-speaking),<br />
belonging to the three<br />
franciscan Orders (Friars<br />
Minor, Capuchins and<br />
Conventuals), are formed<br />
there for three months each<br />
year. Another two projects<br />
for the formation of<br />
missionaries for the whole<br />
<strong>Franciscan</strong> Family, in Asia<br />
and Latin America, are<br />
about to be launched <strong>–</strong> and<br />
which we hope can be<br />
realised soon.<br />
Thirdly, we are<br />
encouraging the young<br />
Entities of Africa and Asia<br />
to become missionaries, to<br />
be subjective protagonists<br />
in the missions, and the<br />
<strong>Province</strong> of South Africa<br />
has already opened a<br />
mission in Namibia, the<br />
<strong>Province</strong> of the Incarnate<br />
Word has opened a mission<br />
in Burkina Faso and is<br />
preparing another in<br />
Ghana, the East Asia<br />
Conference (EAC) in<br />
committing itself to the<br />
support of the Foundation<br />
in Myanmar. The future of<br />
the missions in Africa is<br />
being entrusted to the<br />
Friars of Africa and of those<br />
in Asia to the Friars of Asia.<br />
We will now have a<br />
panoramic view of our<br />
missionary presence in the<br />
world arranged by theme,<br />
the cultural and religious<br />
contexts: <strong>Franciscan</strong><br />
evangelisation among the<br />
cultures and religions of the<br />
world.<br />

la luce del Poverello su quell’iniziativa era una<br />
garanzia di autenticità cristiana, giacché la sua<br />
vita e il suo messaggio poggiano così visibilmente<br />
sulla scelta di Cristo, da respingere a<br />
priori qualunque tentazione di indifferentismo<br />
religioso, che nulla avrebbe a che vedere con<br />
l’autentico dialogo interreligioso. Lo "spirito di<br />
Assisi", che da quell’evento continua a diffondersi<br />
nel mondo, si oppone allo spirito di violenza,<br />
all’abuso della religione come pretesto<br />
per la violenza. Assisi ci dice che la fedeltà alla<br />
propria convinzione religiosa, la fedeltà soprattutto<br />
a Cristo crocifisso e risorto non si esprime<br />
in violenza e intolleranza, ma nel sincero rispetto<br />
dell’altro, nel dialogo, in un annuncio che<br />
fa appello alla libertà e alla ragione, nell’impegno<br />
per la pace e per la riconciliazione. Non<br />
potrebbe essere atteggiamento evangelico, né<br />
francescano, il non riuscire a coniugare l’accoglienza,<br />
il dialogo e il rispetto per tutti con la certezza di fede che ogni cristiano, al pari<br />
del Santo di Assisi, è tenuto a coltivare, annunciando Cristo come via, verità e vita<br />
dell’uomo (cfr Gv 14,6), unico Salvatore del mondo.<br />
