Riassunto
L’articolo intende fornire un itinerario storico che ripercorre, dal tardo Neolitico
ai giorni nostri, il percorso architettonico-evolutivo di modificazione del paesaggio
naturale italiano ad opera dell’uomo, basato principalmente sull’utilizzo dei
materiali da costruzione reperibili in loco, perlomeno fino all’avvento del cemento
armato e di altre tecniche costruttive moderne.
La peculiare ed etereogenea struttura geo-morfologica del nostro territorio ha
offerto, fin dai primi insediamenti umani, una vasta gamma di possibili materiali da
costruzione, utilizzati nella realizzazione di mura, tetti, pavimentazioni, e riconducibili
essenzialmente a due strutture fondamentali, la pietra e il cotto, che, utilizzate
nelle loro più svariate forme e strutture, con tecniche differenti a seconda
del territorio e del periodo storico, hanno contribuito a realizzare la più imponente
trasformazione del paesaggio naturale ad opera di una specie animale.
Abstract
The article provides a historic overview, from the late Neolithic to the present, of the
architectural and evolutionary process of human modification of the natural Italian
landscape. The main focus is the way in which locally available building materials were
used, at least until the discovery of reinforced concrete and other modern building
techniques.
Since human settlement first began in the area, the distinctive and heterogeneous geomorphological
structure of our territory has offered a broad range of potential building
materials for the construction of walls, roofing, floors, which can all be traced back,
essentially, to two fundamental materials: stone and terracotta. These, used in the most
varied shapes and forms, with techniques differing according to territory and historic
period, have contributed to the most impressive transformation of a natural landscape
that the world has yet seen.
