«Brand “cool” come Atari, ma
anche grandi fenomeni come la
saga cinematografica di Twilight»,
dichiara Massimiliano Baroglio,
Licensing Manager della Factory,
«ci hanno permesso di ampliare e
diversificare notevolmente il nostro
parco licenziatari: oggi il nostro
portafoglio ci consente di proporre
la licenza giusta a ciascuna
azienda, per target che spaziano dai
neonati agli adulti».
Sebbene questa diversificazione sia
ormai pienamente operativa, il
cuore dell’attività di TLF resta a
tutt’oggi appannaggio del target
kids, con titoli di successo come
l’evergreen Piggley Winks, la nuova
acquisizione Street Football, legata
al noto cartone animato Rai, e l’im-
mancabile sezione giapponese, ben
rappresentata in questo caso da
Akubi Girl, nuova serie del mitico
studio nipponico Tatsunoko, in onda
oppure icone storiche come Cocco
Bill, cowboy parodistico nato dal
genio tutto italiano di Jacovitti,
entrato a far parte dell’im-
maginario collettivo di
numerose generazioni. «E
non ci fermiamo solo ai
personaggi», aggiunge
Baroglio, «tra i brand più
forti che rappresentiamo
c’è senz’altro il già citato
marchio Atari, ma anche sul
Cubo di Rubik stiamo ottenendo
riscontri molto positivi dalle
aziende più diverse e in alcuni casi
anche inattese».
I prossimi passi
Videogiochi, giochi e giocattoli, ma
anche tendenze in arrivo
dall’Estremo Oriente, film e telefilm
live action: nel futuro di TLF
non c’è proprio più spazio per
l’animazione televisiva
“tradizionale”? Al contrario:
dalle parole di Visca e
Baroglio è chiaro che questo
settore cruciale non è stato e non
sarà abbandonato. «Si tratta solo di
allargare un po’ lo sguardo: nei
nostri piani per l’immediato futuro ci
sono senza dubbio un paio di nuove
serie animate a target pre-school e
kids, ma anche nuovi titoli live action
(sono al vaglio sia ipotesi cinemato-
grafiche che televisive) e natural-
mente nuovi concetti e marchi legati
al mondo della moda, dello sport e
del gioco, un territorio sul quale ci
sentiamo particolarmente forti e che
vogliamo senza dubbio continuare a
presidiare con attenzione».
Branching out
The turning point for The Licensing Factory was probably
when they took over the Atari brand for Italy. “Cool
brands like Atari and runaway successes like the
Twilight saga have led the way to a broader portfolio”,
explains Massimiliano Baroglio, Licensing Manager at
the Factory, “Nowadays we’ve got the right license for
everyone and everything, for targets that range from
newborn babies to adults”.
Although diversification is now a fact, TLF’s heart is still
in the kids’ market, with success stories like Piggley
Winks, their new Street Football brand, linked to the
Rai’s well-known cartoon, and the inevitable Japanese
section with Akubi Girl, currently broadcast by Mediaset.
But perhaps the most interesting developments are
coming from the “other” side of their portfolio, with new
characters discovered in Korea, like the nymphs and
elves in Toread, or icons like Cocco Bill. “And it’s not just
characters”, adds Baroglio, “among some of the most
successful brands we represent are Atari, as I said
before, and Rubik’s Cube, which are both doing
extremely well, in some cases unexpectedly well, for a
whole range of different companies”.
The way ahead
Videogames, games and toys, plus trends from the Far
East, films and live action Tv series: will TLF have time
for “traditional” cartoons in the future? The answer is
definitely yes. “All we’re doing is broadening our outlook.
In the immediate future we’ll be taking on a couple of
new cartoons in the pre-school and kids target, but
we’re also looking at new live action titles, and of course
new concepts and brands linked to fashion, sport and
leisure, an area we feel we count in and we want to keep
a very close eye on”.
