cation. Uno dei prodotti con
maggiore successo negli ultimi
mesi è il quiz per conoscere il
proprio QI». Gameloft, che nasce
producendo giochi per cellulari, tra
cui molti brand famosi della società
“sorella” Ubisoft per quanto
riguarda le licenze, come Splinter
Cell e Prince of Persia, ha poi
avviato molti accordi internazionali
per lo sviluppo di giochi su licenza
quali Shrek (Universal), Terminator
Salvation (Sony Pictures), Ferrari,
UNO (Mattel), Sonic Unleashed
(SEGA) e oggi sviluppa giochi non
solo per cellulari, smartphone,
iPhone e iPod touch, ma anche su
WiiWare, DSiWare, Xbox® LIVE
Arcade e PlayStation®Network. In
oltre la metà dei casi si tratta di
giochi di proprietà con brand
diventati famosi come Real
Football e Asphalt. Il mix tra
licenze e property vale anche per
Glu: «Trai 40-50 titoli che
lanciamo ogni anno», spiega
Andrea Cordara, «ci sono property
che ci hanno dato grandi soddisfazioni
come Dottor Genio 2, un
brain trainer per iPhone. Ora
stiamo lanciando nuovi titoli come
Glider o Guardie e ladri. La nostra
strategia è quella di avere in ogni
momento dell’anno titoli forti in
ogni tipologia di game play (sport,
azione e avventura, puzzle), che
siano di proprietà o in licenza».
Il valore dell’originale
A differenza di altri settori
importanti per il licensing, il
mondo dei giochi per telefonia
mobile subisce la pirateria in
modo nettamente marginale
rispetto ad altri. I giochi originali
si scaricano in digitale in modo
intuitivo dai siti dei gestori telefonici
o dagli store online e
hanno un costo molto contenuto:
«Il prezzo medio è basso, di 5
euro, e può raggiungere i 6 euro
per giochi HD e 3D», precisa
Andrea Cordara. Certo, i giochi
Java che coprono la quasi totalità
del mercato si possono
downloadare attraverso i
programmi di file sharing peer to
peer e caricare via bluetooth. Ma
la procedura non è sempre facile
e spesso il file ha problemi di
compatibilità con i vari modelli
di cellulare. Gli adulti, poi, sono
restii a mettere a repentaglio il
proprio telefono che è anche uno
strumento di lavoro, con giochi
di provenienza ignota.
License to grow
The world of games for mobiles offers the biggest oppor-
tunities for the development of licensed products.
Products that can count on the fame of their brands and
characters are interwoven with publishers offering orig-
inal creations. But which is the winning option? According
to Lucia Predolin at Buongiorno.it, who works with some
of the world’s major licensors like Universal Music,
Warner Music, Emi, Disney, EA, Endemol and a host of
other formats and local labels:
“nowadays the most rewarding
strategy lies in communicating
a new product that stimulates
an impulse buy. Which means
characters and applications
that are fun, or games. Music is
decreasing as a mobile down-
load trend, while Java games
and applications are riding
high. One of the most
successful products over the
last few months has been a
quiz to assess your IQ”.
Gameloft was founded to
produce games like Splinter
Cell and Prince of Persia under
license to her sister company
Ubisoft and then went on to
develop games under different licenses such as Shrek
Terminator (Sony Pictures) and Sonic Unleashed. Today
more than half their games are their own, with brands
that have become famous like Real Football and Asphalt.
The mix between licenses and property applies to Glu as
well: “Our strategy”, explains Andrea Cordara, “is to
have leading titles in every type of game all year round,
whether they’re under license or our own property”.
Original values
Unlike other important sectors in licensing, games for
mobile phones are only marginally affected by pirating
compared to other areas. Original games are digitally
downloaded in user-friendly modes and are inexpen-
sive: “the average price for a Java game is low, 5 euros,
which can go up to 6 euros for HD and 3D games.
Games for iPhones can cost as little as 99 cents”,
comments Andrea Cordara. Of course Java games,
which account for virtually the whole market, can also
be downloaded using file sharing peer-to-peer
programmes and then uploaded onto phones via blue
tooth. But the procedure can be cumbersome and the
files often have compatibility problems with the various
handset models.
