Chupa Chups Bath Ball from Japan “Bath Ball” is a capsule which contains bath salts with fruit aroma and a collectable surprise inside, licensed by Chupa Chups to Nol Corporation in Japan and Taiwan. A real case Elisabetta Ranieri Then there is that symbol of fragile innocence, mixed with underlying, tenderly allusive femminility that is Tweety Pie, with a two-tiered Warner license: a line for women by Selectiva distributed worldwide to beauty shops and a make up collection for young girls from Amarena, who prefer a mass market distribution option. Another example of a famous brand that has conquered fans of all ages is Hello Kitty, exemplified by the Hello Kitty Diamond line recently launched by Aplus and distributed through beauty shops to a 17/18 year old plus target. From toiletries to stationery In Harvest, bath foam, brushes and sponges change look each year and all the products are produced under license. “We use cult figures and rising stars from new TV programmes or films”, explains Luciano Abbati, the managing director. “Our star products are 3D containers, that even attract adult collectors. Stationery is still a thing for the future, but we have earned a place in the big toy stores”. It is up to each manufacturer to choose how to distribute each product line. “Big retailers and beauty shops are the main channels, but pharmacies are popular particularly for baby products and dental hygiene”, claims Attilia Pavarini. While Paola Riva at Antasya is convinced that toy shops and stationers have potential: “Stationers and toy shops are best suited to gift sets”. Stationery may well remain a secondary channel, but it is one in evolution: “Our success”, explains Cristina Larcher, Marketing Director at Aplus, “is partly due to the fact that we sold lines to gift shops and stationers, who benefited from broadening their range of licensed products and increased territorial coverage, offering consumers something unusual in that channel”. history, as it sold more than 1 million units in less than one year. The recipe: a right retail positioning – gift shops like Loft at Shibuya, the trendy shopping area of Tokyo, and a testimonial like Japan’s Prime Minister, stopping in front of a huge display during a retail visit, asking for information about this uinique product. This brought LIMA to honour the product with the Award for the Best Licensed Product at the Licensing show in Tokyo last October.
