I movimenti Rastafari si battevano per restituire all'uomo nero il valore
che esso si meritava, facendogli prendere coscienza della sua importanza
nella civilizzazione, a cominciare dalla Bibbia, dove gli antenati ebrei di
Selassié sarebbero stati, come lui, neri (e tra questi, Mosé e Gesù).
I rasta non si tagliano né barba, né capelli, ad immagine di Gesù,
lasciando crescere i capelli in “dreadlocks”, una pettinatura che viene
associata alla criniera di un leone. Vicini spiritualmente alla terra e alla
natura, i rasta non bevono alcol, non possono toccare i morti né fare
allusione alla morte stessa (ed è per questo che essi cantano la vita) e il
loro corpo è la loro chiesa. Sono vegentariani e rifiutano qualsiasi cibo
che non sia naturale o biologico. I loro colori sono quelli dell'Etiopia, il
rosso, l'oro e il verde.
Fu a partire dal 1970 che una corrente rasta attraversò il genere musicale
del reggae e fu Bob Marley che fece conoscere questa cultura al mondo,
valorizzando la storia d'Africa, sconosciuta alla maggior parte della
gente, seppur estremamente ricca. Da Bob Marley in poi il movimento
rastafari divenne una moda internazionale.
